Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to study Bishop-Phelps-Bollob\'as property for operators on c_0-sums of euclidean spaces. We show that the pair (c_0\left(\bigoplus^{\infty}_{k=1}\ell^{k}_{2} \right)),Y) has the Bishop-Phelps-Bollob\'as property for operators (in short BPBp for operators) whenever Y is a uniformly convex Banach space.

Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to study some geometric and topological properties on $ c_0$ sum of the finite dimensional Banach lattice $\ell_2^n$, its dual and its bidual. Among other results, we show that the Banach lattices $c_0(\ell_2^n)$ has the strong Gelfand-Philips property, but does not have the positive Grothendieck property. Abstract

Abstract Introduction Around 75% of (re)emerging infections are of zoonotic origins. The risk of zoonotic transmission in Mozambique is high because approximately 81% of the country’s labor force is involved with agriculture, which represents a vulnerability for more frequent human-animal interaction and risk of spillover events. A One Health Zoonotic Disease Prioritization (OHZDP) workshop was conducted in Mozambique to facilitate coordination and collaboration within and across sectors to prevent, detect, and respond to zoonotic disease threats. Based on the success of this integrated workshop, the stakeholders developed actions whose results have a great impact on animal welfare, environment and improving public health. Methods In 2018, representatives from Mozambique’s human, animal, and environmental sectors from government, universities, research institutions and partners used US CDC’s OHZDP Process to prioritize endemic and emerging zoonotic diseases of greatest national concern and develop recommendations and key interventions needed to advance One Health in Mozambique. After the OHZDP workshop, the Mozambique One Health Secretariat used a theory of change methodology to identify activities for implementation from the recommendations of the OHZDP workshop. Since the OHZDP workshop, the Secretariat has monitored progress of activities annually. Results Mozambique’s priority zoonotic diseases are rabies, zoonotic tuberculosis, salmonellosis, zoonotic avian influenza, trypanosomiasis, brucellosis, and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever. One Health recommendations and interventions to address the priority zoonotic diseases focused on One Health collaboration, communication, and coordination; laboratory; surveillance; preparedness and response; prevention; workforce development; and research. After the OHZDP workshop, Mozambique established One Health coordination mechanisms, developed training courses for surveillance, laboratory diagnosis, outbreak investigation, and preparedness and response for the priority zoonotic diseases, conducted joint research, and developed plans. Conclusion Prioritization of zoonotic diseases is critical as it facilitated the key One Health players in Mozambique to optimize resources, gain a greater understanding of zoonotic diseases, and implement policies and activities that promote multisectoral, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary collaboration across human, animal, and environmental sectors to prevent, detect, and respond to public health threats. The success of these activities implemented by the local Government and One Health partners were built from the implementation and momentum from the Mozambique’s OHZDP workshop.

16. Editorial: Honouring John Hardy - A true pioneer in research

Abstract

This Editorial highlights the knighthood recognition of Sir John Hardy, Professor and Chair at the University College London, for his exceptional services to human health and dementia research. We also celebrate his successful trajectory in neurochemistry and neurogenetics, and acknowledge his long-standing contributions to the Journal of Neurochemistry as an author and editor. John Hardy's research identified key mutations linked to prevalent neurodegenerative diseases in humans and contributed to our understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of Alzheimer disease. As John's career has inspired many generations of researchers in neurochemistry, we present a brief Q&A interview with him on the occasion of his most recent recognition.

Abstract

Background New treatments are currently offering new opportunities and challenges in clinical management and research in the migraine field. There is the need of homogenous criteria to identify candidates for treatment escalation as well as of reliable criteria to identify refractoriness to treatment. To overcome those issues, the European Headache Federation (EHF) issued a Consensus document to propose criteria to approach difficult-to-treat migraine patients in a standardized way. The Consensus proposed well-defined criteria for resistant migraine (i.e., patients who do not respond to some treatment but who have residual therapeutic opportunities) and refractory migraine (i.e., patients who still have debilitating migraine despite maximal treatment efforts). The aim of this study was to better understand the perceived impact of resistant and refractory migraine and the attitude of physicians involved in migraine care toward those conditions. Methods We conducted a web-questionnaire-based cross-sectional international study involving physicians with interest in headache care. Results There were 277 questionnaires available for analysis. A relevant proportion of participants reported that patients with resistant and refractory migraine were frequently seen in their clinical practice (49.5% for resistant and 28.9% for refractory migraine); percentages were higher when considering only those working in specialized headache centers (75% and 46% respectively). However, many physicians reported low or moderate confidence in managing resistant (8.1% and 43.3%, respectively) and refractory (20.7% and 48.4%, respectively) migraine patients; confidence in treating resistant and refractory migraine patients was different according to the level of care and to the number of patients visited per week. Patients with resistant and refractory migraine were infrequently referred to more specialized centers (12% and 19%, respectively); also in this case, figures were different according to the level of care. Conclusions This report highlights the clinical relevance of difficult-to-treat migraine and the presence of unmet needs in this field. There is the need of more evidence regarding the management of those patients and clear guidance referring to the organization of care and available opportunities.

Abstract

Four different plant secondary metabolites were screened for their effect on rumen biohydrogenation of forage long-chain fatty acids, using dual-flow continuous culture fermenters. Treatments were as follows: control (no additive), positive control (12 mg/L of monensin), and plant extracts (500 and 1,000 mg/L of triterpene saponin; 250 and 500 mg/L of quercetin; 250 mg/L of eugenol; 500 mg/L of cinnamaldehyde). Monensin increased propionate, decreased acetate and butyrate proportions, and inhibited the complete biohydrogenation of fatty acids resulting in the accumulation of intermediates of the biohydrogenation process (C18:2 trans-11, cis-15 rather than C18:1 trans-11). Cinnamaldehyde decreased total VFA concentration and proportions of odd and branched-chain fatty acids in total fat effluent. Apparent biohydroge nation of C18:2n-6 and C18:3n-3 was also less, and a shift from the major known biohydrogenation pathway to a secondary pathway of C18:2n-6 was observed, as evidenced by an accumulation of C18:1 trans-10 and trans-10, cis-12 CLA. Quercetin (500 mg/L) increased total VFA concentration, but no shifts in the pathways or extent of biohydrogenation were observed. Eugenol resulted in the accumulation of C18:1 trans-15 and C18:1 cis-15, end products of an alternative biohydrogenation pathway of C18:3n-3. Triterpene saponins did not affect the fermentation pattern, the biohydrogenation pathways, or the extent of biohydrogenation. At the doses tested in this study, we could only show a direct relation between changes in the rumen fatty acid metabolism and the presence of cinnamaldehyde but not for eugenol, quercetin, or triterpene saponins. The discovery of causative mutations in the EFNB1 gene is exploited, which encodes ephrin-B1, to survey the molecular alterations in 59 families. Somatic mosaicism was demonstrated in 6 of 53 informative families, and of 17 germline mutations in individuals for whom the parental origin of mutation could be demonstrated, 15 arose from the father.

Abstract

This meta-analysis evaluates the performance of deep machine learning (DML) models compared to expert evaluation in diagnosing adnexal masses using ultrasound images. Four studies published between 2000 and 2023 were included in the analysis. The quality of the studies was generally good, with low risk of bias for the index and reference tests, but high risk of bias for patient selection. The results showed no significant differences between DML systems and expert evaluations in detecting and differentially diagnosing adnexal masses using ultrasound images. Abstract

The modeling process of a component or system consists of several steps, which are rarely entirely covered in undergraduate courses. Moreover, theoretical and laboratory lectures focus on different stages on modeling, and are commonly taught at different periods, which may negatively affect the learning process. Thus, this paper proposes a set of lectures that mixes theory and experiments, taught in an experimental laboratory, and which address all steps of modeling process. The case study is a single-phase transformer, where from a conceptual (electromagnetic) model, physical (electrical) models are developed up to a model capable of representing more complex phenomena such as inrush currents and magnetizing inductance saturation. Increasingly detailed theoretical modeling, using simulation tools and experimental measurements, guides the student in this process. It is shown that models can be improved at the expense of deeper understanding of the involved phenomena, and of more complex theoretical and experimental strategies to validate them. Moreover, this paper demonstrates that modeling complexity is only necessary up to a point which explains adequately the experimental results. Finally, the paper presents the perception of the students on the lectures, indicating that this teaching methodology can be adequate for other courses on system modeling.
