1. Instantons and transseries of the Mathieu potential deformed by a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry parameter

Abstract

We investigate the non-perturbative effects of a deformation of the Mathieu differential equation consistent with $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. First, we develop a connection between the non-Hermitian and Hermitian scenarios by a reparameterization in the complex plane, followed by a restriction of the $\mathcal{PT}$ deformation parameter. The latter is responsible for preserving the information about $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry when we choose to work in the Hermitian scenario. We note that this factor is present in all non-perturbative results and in the transseries representation of the deformed Mathieu partition function that we have obtained. In quantum mechanics, we found that the deformation parameter of $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry has an effect on the real instanton solution for the deformed Mathieu potential in the Hermitian scenario. As its value increases, the non-Hermiticity factor makes it smoother for the instanton to pass from one minimum to another, that is, it modifies the instanton width. The explanation for this lies in the fact that the height of the potential barrier decreases as we increase the value of the deformation parameter. We present how this effect extends to the multi-instanton level and to the bounce limit of an instanton-anti-instanton pair. Abstract

We propose a non-Hermitian deformation of the Mathieu equation that preserves $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry and study its spectrum and the transition from $\mathcal{PT}$-unbroken to $\mathcal{PT}$-broken phases. We show that our model not only reproduces behaviors expected by the literature but also indicates the existence of a richer structure for the spectrum. We also discuss the influence of the boundary condition and the model parameters in the exceptional line that marks the $\mathcal{PT}$ breaking.

9. The effect of boundary conditions on dimensionally reduced field-theoretical models at finite temperature

Abstract

Here we understand \textit{dimensional reduction} as a procedure to obtain an effective model in $D-1$ dimensions that is related to the original model in $D$ dimensions. To explore this concept we use both a self-interacting fermionic model and self-interacting bosonic model. Furthermore, in both cases, we consider different boundary conditions in space: periodic, antiperiodic, Dirichlet and Neumann. For bosonic fields, we get the so defined dimensional reduction. Taking the simple example of a quartic interaction, we obtain that the boundary condition (periodic, Dirichlet, Neumann) influence the new coupling of the reduced model. For fermionic fields, we get the curious result that the model obtained reducing from $D$ dimensions to $D-1$ dimensions is distinguishable from taking into account a fermionic field originally in $D-1$ dimensions. Moreover, when one considers antiperiodic boundary condition in space (both for bosons or fermions) it is found that the dimensional reduction is not allowed.

10. Dimensional reduction of a finite-size scalar field model at finite temperature

Abstract

We investigate the process of dimensional reduction of one spatial dimension in a thermal scalar field model defined in $D$ dimensions (inverse temperature and $D-1$ spatial dimensions). We obtain that a thermal model in $D$ dimensions with one of the spatial dimensions having a finite size $L$ is related to the finite temperature model with just $D-1$ spatial dimensions and no finite size. Our results are obtained for one-loop calculations and for any dimension $D$. For example, in $D=4$ we have a relationship between a thin film with thickness $L$ at finite temperature and a surface at finite temperature. We show that, although a strict dimensional reduction is not allowed, it is possible to define a valid prescription for this procedure.

Abstract

The National Institute for Space Research (INPE) has been a partner in significant projects that conduct atmospheric investigations impacting various sectors, such as the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO) project. Since 2009, the project has conducted studies on the interactions between climate and the Amazon forest. ATTO has played an essential role in providing large volumes of data obtained by meteorological sensors, contributing to a deeper understanding of the atmospheric dynamics of the region. In a landscape where Artificial Intelligence-based rainfall forecast models gain prominence, this study explores the imbalance of data from the ATTO Campina field experiment and its influence on short-term rainfall forecasts using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). Metrics such as MAE, RMSE, and POD, as well as FAR indices, were applied in the assessment and revealed the connection between data balance and forecast results. More balanced data or data with greater weights for different rainfall ranges yield better results. The study emphasizes the importance of reliable data for training rain forecast models, aiming to improve the dexterity of these models. This approach is fundamental to increase the reliability of these models in real environments.

International audience; Objectives: Our aim was to assess if switching from a protease inhibitors (PI)-based regimen to a PI-free one is associated with an increased risk of Kaposi Sarcoma (KS) relapse among patients living with HIV (PLHIV) with history of KS and controlled HIV replication.Methods: In a retrospective analysis of the prospectively collected Dat'AIDS database we selected patients who both had a past KS history and a HIV-1 viral load below 200 copies/mL while being PI-treated. We searched for KS relapses while persistent virological success was maintained for at least 6 months, whether patients kept taking the PI, or switched to PI-free regimen.Results: Among the 216 patients with past KS event and a history of HIV-1 infection efficiently treated by a PI-based regimen, 148 patients (68.5%) later switched to a PI-sparing regimen. Their baseline characteristics were not different from non-switching patients. We described 7 cases of relapse (3.2% of the 216 patients). Five cases of relapse occurred in switching patients (3.4%). The remaining two relapses occurred in PI-treated patients (2.9%). At KS relapse, CD4 cell count was 459 cells/μL (range 225-560) for switching patients, compared with 362 and 136 cells/μL for the other two patients.Conclusions: In this large cohort of PLHIV with a history of KS and ART-controlled HIV replication, KS relapses were described in 3.2% of the patients, and were not more frequent when a PI-containing ART regimen has been switched to a PI-free regimen. Our results do not support a specific effect of PI on KS.

Abstract

In the neocortex, fast synaptic inhibition orchestrates both spontaneous and sensory-evoked activity. GABAergic interneurons (INs) inhibit pyramidal neurons (PNs) directly, modulating their output activity and thus contributing to balance cortical networks. Moreover, several IN subtypes also inhibit other INs, forming specific disinhibitory circuits, which play crucial roles in several cognitive functions. Here, we studied a homogeneous subpopulation of somatostatin (SST)-positive INs, the Martinotti cells (MCs) in layer 2/3 of the mouse barrel cortex (both sexes). MCs are a prominent IN subclass inhibiting the distal portion of PN apical dendrites, thus controlling dendrite electrogenesis and synaptic integration. Yet, it is poorly understood whether MCs inhibit other elements of the cortical circuits, and the connectivity properties with non-PN targets are unknown. We found that MCs have a strong preference for PN dendrites, but they also considerably connect with parvalbumin (PV)-positive, vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP)-expressing and layer 1 (L1) INs. Remarkably, GABAergic synapses from MCs exhibited clear cell-type-specific short-term plasticity. Moreover, whereas the biophysical properties of MC-PN synapses were consistent with distal dendritic inhibition, MC-IN synapses exhibited characteristics of fast perisomatic inhibition. Finally, MC-PN connections used α5-containing GABAARs, but this subunit was not expressed by the other INs targeted by MCs. We reveal a specialized connectivity blueprint of MCs within different elements of superficial cortical layers. In addition, our results identify α5-GABAARs as the molecular fingerprint of MC-PN dendritic inhibition. This is of critical importance, given the role of α5-GABAARs in cognitive performance and their involvement in several brain diseases.Significance statementMartinotti cells (MCs) are a prominent subclass of SST-expressing GABAergic INs, specialized in controlling distal dendrites of PNs and taking part in several cognitive functions. Here we characterize the connectivity pattern of MCs with other INs in the superficial layers (L1 and L2/3) of the mouse barrel cortex. We found that the connectivity pattern of MCs with PNs as well as PV, VIP and L1 INs exhibit target-specific plasticity and biophysical properties. The stark specificity of α5-GABAARs at MC-PN synapses, and the lack or functional expression of this subunit by other cell types, define the molecular identity of MC-PN connections and the exclusive involvement of this outstanding inhibitory circuits in α5-dependent cognitive tasks.

Abstract

The increase in digital teaching and learning methodologies creates the opportunity for new educational approaches, both in terms of pedagogical practice and in the availability of new technological tools. The flipped classroom as an active teaching methodology is one example of blended learning (b-learning), which aims to harmonize and enhance the fusion of face-to-face teaching with online teaching, allowing students to get better use of both face-to-face contact with classmates and professors and digital teaching resources. However, active teaching methodologies allow us to merge educational techniques from different methodological approaches, for example, gamification and team-based learning (TBL), among others. This study aims to demonstrate how to implement a flipped classroom with the possibility of integrating gamification and TBL, indicating possibilities and challenges to overcome, through the comparative study and research carried out with students in higher education. The study was conducted with a group of 88 students from the engineering and technology fields, which showed that students have a very positive perception of active teaching methodologies and their teaching and learning techniques, especially those involving digital. Data collection was performed by a survey submitted to quantitative analysis using the Software SPSS version 28.

Abstract

This report presents the activities of the first working group of the COST Action ArVI, Runtime Verification beyond Monitoring. The report aims to provide an overview of some of the major core aspects involved in Runtime Verification. Runtime Verification is the field of research dedicated to the analysis of system executions. It is often seen as a discipline that studies how a system run satisfies or violates correctness properties. The report exposes a taxonomy of Runtime Verification (RV) presenting the terminology involved with the main concepts of the field. The report also develops the concept of instrumentation, the various ways to instrument systems, and the fundamental role of instrumentation in designing an RV framework. We also discuss how RV interplays with other verification techniques such as model-checking, deductive verification, model learning, testing, and runtime assertion checking. Finally, we propose challenges in monitoring quantitative and statistical data beyond detecting property violation.

Abstract

A patient with moderately differentiated pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor with synchronous multifocal liver metastases was referred for further staging with PET/CT. The examinations were performed on 2 consecutive days and showed mild Ga-68-DOTANOC and intense F-18-FDG uptake in an incidental right parotid nodule. Differential diagnoses include primary or metastatic neuroendocrine tumor, malignant or benign primary parotid tumor, and intraparotid lymph node. Histology revealed characteristics of a Warthin tumor. While focal FDG uptake in Warthin tumor is frequently described, the somatostatin expression was rarely reported. This clinical case describes Ga-68-DOTANOC and F-18-FDG uptake in a parotid Warthin tumor histologically confirmed.

Abstract

We investigated SARS-CoV-2 transmission dynamics in Italy, one of the countries hit hardest by the pandemic, using phylodynamic analysis of viral genetic and epidemiological data. We observed the co-circulation of multiple SARS-CoV-2 lineages over time, which were linked to multiple importations and characterized by large transmission clusters concomitant with a high number of infections. Subsequent implementation of a three-phase nationwide lockdown strategy greatly reduced infection numbers and hospitalizations. Yet we present evidence of sustained viral spread among sporadic clusters acting as “hidden reservoirs” during summer 2020. Mathematical modelling shows that increased mobility among residents eventually catalyzed the coalescence of such clusters, thus driving up the number of infections and initiating a new epidemic wave. Our results suggest that the efficacy of public health interventions is, ultimately, limited by the size and structure of epidemic reservoirs, which may warrant prioritization during vaccine deployment.

Abstract

Background The arrival of highly effective, well-tolerated, direct-acting antiviral agents (DAA) led to a dramatic decrease in hepatitis C virus (HCV) prevalence. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-HCV–coinfected patients are deemed a priority population for HCV elimination, while a rise in recently acquired HCV infections in men who have sex with men (MSM) has been described. We describe the variations in HIV-HCV epidemiology in the French Dat’AIDS cohort. Methods This was a retrospective analysis of a prospective cohort of persons living with HIV (PLWH) from 2012 to 2018. We determined HCV prevalence, HCV incidence, proportion of viremic patients, treatment uptake, and mortality rate in the full cohort and by HIV risk factors. Results From 2012 to 2018, 50 861 PLWH with a known HCV status were followed up. During the period, HCV prevalence decreased from 15.4% to 13.5%. HCV prevalence among new HIV cases increased from 1.9% to 3.5% in MSM but remained stable in other groups. Recently acquired HCV incidence increased from 0.36/100 person-years to 1.25/100 person-years in MSM. The proportion of viremic patients decreased from 67.0% to 8.9%. MSM became the first group of viremic patients in 2018 (37.9%). Recently acquired hepatitis represented 59.2% of viremic MSM in 2018. DAA treatment uptake increased from 11.4% to 61.5%. More treatments were initiated in MSM in 2018 (41.2%) than in intravenous drug users (35.6%). In MSM, treatment at the acute phase represented 30.0% of treatments in 2018. Conclusions A major shift in HCV epidemiology was observed in PLWH in France from 2012 to 2018, leading to a unique situation in which the major group of HCV transmission in 2018 was MSM. Abstract

International audience; Background - In late 2013, France was one of the first countries to recommend initiation of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) irrespective of CD4 cell count. Methods - To assess the impact of achieving the second and third Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS 90-90-90 targets (ie, 90% of diagnosed people on sustained cART, and, of those, 90% virologically controlled) on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) incidence, we conducted a longitudinal study to describe the epidemiology of primary HIV infection (PHI) and/or recent HIV infection (patients with CD4 cell count ≥500/mm3 at HIV diagnosis; (PRHI) between 2007 and 2017 in a large French multicenter cohort. To identify changes in trends in PHI and PRHI, we used single breakpoint linear segmented regression analysis. Results - During the study period, 61 822 patients were followed in the Dat'AIDS cohort; 2027 (10.0%) had PHI and 7314 (36.1%) had PRHI. The second and third targets were reached in 2014 and 2013, respectively. The median delay between HIV diagnosis and cART initiation decreased from 9.07 (interquartile range [IQR], 1.39-33.47) months in 2007 to 0.77 (IQR, 0.37-1.60) months in 2017. A decrease in PHI (-35.1%) and PRHI (-25.4%) was observed starting in 2013. The breakpoints for PHI and PRHI were 2012.6 (95% confidence interval [CI], 2010.8-2014.4) and 2013.1 (95% CI, 2011.3-2014.8), respectively. Conclusions - Our findings show that the achievements of 2 public health targets in France and the early initiation of cART were accompanied by a reduction of about one-third in PHI and PRHI between 2013 and 2017. Abstract

International audience; Background - Although antiretroviral therapy (ART) has reduced the risk of Kaposi sarcoma (KS), KS cases still occur in HIV-infected people. Objective - To describe all KS cases observed between 2010 and 2015 in a country with high ART coverage. Methods - Retrospective study using longitudinal data from 44 642 patients in the French Dat'AIDS multicenter cohort. Patients' characteristics were described at KS diagnosis according to ART exposure and to HIV-plasma viral load (HIV-pVL) (≤50 or >50) copies/mL. Results - Among the 209 KS cases diagnosed during the study period, 33.2% occurred in ART naïve patients, 17.3% in ART-experienced patients and 49.5% in patients on ART, of whom 23% for more than 6 months. Among these patients, 24 (11.5%) had HIV-pVL ≤50 cp/mL, and 16 (66%) were treated with a boosted-PI-based regimen. The distribution of KS localization did not differ by ART status nor by year of diagnosis. Limitations - Data on human herpesvirus 8, treatment modalities for KS and response rate were not collected. Conclusion - Half of KS cases observed in the study period occurred in patients not on ART, reflecting the persistence of late HIV diagnosis. Factors associated with KS in patients on ART with HIV-pVL ≤50 cp/mL remain to be explored.

Abstract

Background We assessed prevalence of multimorbidity (MM) according to year of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) diagnosis in elderly people living with HIV (PLWH). Methods This was a cross-sectional study of MM in PLWH aged ≥70 years from the Dat’AIDS French multicenter cohort. MM was defined as at least 3 coexistent morbidities of high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, non-AIDS cancer, chronic renal failure, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, obesity, undernutrition, or hypercholesterolemia. Logistic regression models evaluated the association between MM and calendar periods of HIV diagnosis (1983–1996, 1997–2006, and 2007–2018). The secondary analysis evaluated MM as a continuous outcome, and a sensitivity analysis excluded PLWH with nadir CD4 count Results Between January 2017 and September 2018, 2476 PLWH were included. Median age was 73 years, 75% were men, median CD4 count was 578 cells/μL, and 94% had controlled viremia. MM prevalence was 71%. HBP and hypercholesterolemia were the most prevalent comorbidities. After adjustment for age, gender, smoking status, hepatitis C and hepatitis B virus coinfection, group of exposure, nadir CD4 count, CD4:CD8 ratio, and last CD4 level, calendar period of diagnosis was not associated with MM (P = .169). MM was associated with older age, CD4/CD8 ratio Conclusions MM prevalence was high and increased with age, low CD4/CD8 ratio, and nadir CD4 count

Abstract

OBJECTIVES To analyse the frequency and causes of treatment discontinuation in patients who were treated with an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI), with a focus on neuropsychiatric adverse events (NPAEs). METHODS Patients in 18 HIV reference centres in France were prospectively included in the Dat'AIDS cohort. Data were collected from all patients starting an INSTI-containing regimen between 1 January 2006 and 31 December 2016. All causes of INSTI-containing regimen discontinuations were analysed, and patients' characteristics related to discontinuation due to NPAEs were sought. RESULTS INSTIs were prescribed to 21315 patients: 6274 received dolutegravir, 3421 received elvitegravir boosted by cobicistat, and 11620 received raltegravir.
