3. Foot-in-the-door technique using a courtship request: a field experiment

Abstract

'Foot-in-the-door' is a well-known compliance technique which increases compliance to a request. Many investigations with this paradigm have generally used prosocial requests to test its effect. Evaluation of the effect of foot-in-the-door was carried out with a courtship request. 360 young women were solicited in the street to accept having a drink with a young male confederate. In the foot-in-the-door condition, before being solicited to have a drink, the young woman was asked to give directions to the confederate or to give him a light for his cigarette. Analysis showed foot-in-the-door was associated with greater compliance to the second request. The theoretical implication of such results with this nonprosocial request are discussed.

Abstract

International audience; Aims: The main objective of this study was to test competitive path models describing the relationship between Work–Home Interference, job burnout and job satisfaction. Study Design: Data was obtained from a sample of 95 dentists. A conceptual model in which burnout totally mediates the relationship between Work–Home Interference and job satisfaction was compared to another model in which this mediation was partial. The mediator role was demonstrated using the rationale and procedure suggested by Holmbeck [1]. The results were discussed in light of the literature dealing with burnout. Sample: Data was obtained from a sample of 95 denstists. Practical Implications: The research suggests the very importance of relationships between work and home life, and the mediator role of job burnout for current research in quality of work

Abstract

Le découpage des sciences humaines en disciplines et sous-disciplines conduit à approcher l’homme ou la femme comme un être cloisonné dont les différentes sphères d’activité seraient en quelque sorte disjointes. Nous savons pourtant, ne serait-ce qu’en nous référant à notre propre existence, que la réalité est autre. Si l’on peut dire avec une certaine pertinence que tel homme ou telle femme est tantôt salarié ou salariée, tantôt père ou mère, tantôt bricoleur ou bricoleuse, tantôt pratiquant ou pratiquante d’un sport donné, tantôt amateur ou amatrice d’art, etc. etc. ce ne peut être qu’en référence à un découpage temporel car dans chacun de ces moments d’activité spécifique, cet homme ou cette femme sera « un » ou « une », un être psychologique unique qui relie chacun de ces moments aux autres. Et si l’on pourrait considérer que chacun de ces moments définit de multiples identités de cet homme ou de cette femme, il serait plus juste de dire que c’est leur ensemble et la manière de les « gérer », de « gérer » leur coexistence, de les relier, d’être engagé dans l’une de ces activités tout en pensant aux autres, de préparer la suivante, de concilier leurs contraintes respectives et les conflits qui peuvent en résulter, qui constituent en fait son identité, sa personne. Plus particulièrement, les disciplines qui traitent de l’homme au travail (sociologie du travail, psychologie du travail, organisation du travail, sciences de gestion, ergonomie…) voient le plus souvent (ou en tout cas ont principalement vu par le passé) l’homme ou la femme comme un travailleur ou une travailleuse, un producteur ou une productrice, un opérateur ou une opératrice, négligeant ainsi l’interaction de ce type de statuts et de rôles avec les autres activités de cet homme ou de cette femme en dehors de la vie professionnelle. 22. Social support and health: an overview of selected theoretical models for adaptation

Abstract

Social support has been the subject of extensive study in recent years. It is a multidimensional concept. The objective of this chapter is to add to knowledge about the action mechanisms of social support already widely discussed in health psychology. This involves distinguishing the direct effects of social support, independent of a stress situation, from its indirect effects (stress buffers). This chapter will set out several explanatory models for social support which will then be explored in terms of their utility and limitations. Next, the issue of negative interactions (e.g. isolation, conflict) and their consequences on individual health will be explored. Social support, whether positive or negative, appears to be an essential resource requiring consideration and likely to potentiate individual adaptation. © 2013 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. Abstract

This original research presents a French adaptation and validation of the "Burnout Measure Short version" (BMS) (Malach-Pines, 2005). To do this, we assessed the psychometric properties of scores obtained by the French version. A confirmatory factor analysis led to a one factor solution: "the degree of exhaustion" (n = 206). This factor analysis is based on Pines and Aronson's framework (1988). This unidimensional scale was (positively) correlated with other burnout measures (subscale "emotional exhaustion", MBI) and with perceived stress. Abstract

The aim of this study is to test the hypothesis according to which the imbalance between effort and reward, as well as to what degree the interference of professional life upon one's private life, can affect the level of job burnout felt by a group of dairy farmers. The sample group was composed of dairy farmers (N=104) from Eure who were sent a questionnaire by mail. Each questionnaire was designed to collect results which could be analysed with the help of the Siegrist scale (the effort-reward imbalance scale), the Swing scale and the MBI (General Survey). The data show that effort-reward imbalance does not in itself explain the burnout. On the other hand, negative professional/personal interaction strongly contributed to it. In addition, no difference was observed based on the sex of the worker. The limits and contributions of the study are presented in the discussion.
