We derive, and validate numerically, an analytical model for electron-only magnetic reconnection applicable to strongly magnetized (low-beta) plasmas. Our model predicts sub-ion-scale reconnection rates significantly higher than those pertaining to large-scale reconnection, aligning with recent observations and simulations. We apply this reconnection model to the problem of inverse magnetic-energy transfer at sub-ion scales. We derive time-dependent scaling laws for the magnetic energy decay and the typical magnetic structure dimensions that differ from those previously found in the MHD regime. These scaling laws are validated via two- and three-dimensional simulations, demonstrating that sub-ion scale magnetic fields can reach large, system-size scales via successive coalescence.

A transport-like framework for the study of magnetic reconnection mediated by self-driven turbulence is proposed, based on timescale separation between the reconnection time and the characteristic timescale of the turbulent fluctuations which arise in the reconnection layer. We argue that the mean fields remain on MHD scales even in collisionless cases. These observations provide theoretical justification for an efficient computational approach to this problem, which we discuss., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure

The Vlasov-Maxwell equations provide an \textit{ab-initio} description of collisionless plasmas, but solving them is often impractical because of the wide range of spatial and temporal scales that must be resolved and the high dimensionality of the problem. In this work, we present a quantum-inspired semi-implicit Vlasov-Maxwell solver that utilizes the quantized tensor network (QTN) framework. With this QTN solver, the cost of grid-based numerical simulation of size $N$ is reduced from $\mathcal{O}(N)$ to $\mathcal{O}(\text{poly}(D))$, where $D$ is the ``rank'' or ``bond dimension'' of the QTN and is typically set to be much smaller than $N$. We find that for the five-dimensional test problems considered here, a modest $D=64$ appears to be sufficient for capturing the expected physics despite the simulations using a total of $N=2^{36}$ grid points, \edit{which would require $D=2^{18}$ for full-rank calculations}. Additionally, we observe that a QTN time evolution scheme based on the Dirac-Frenkel variational principle allows one to use somewhat larger time steps than prescribed by the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) constraint. As such, this work demonstrates that the QTN format is a promising means of approximately solving the Vlasov-Maxwell equations with significantly reduced cost.

We investigate the linear and nonlinear evolution of the ion-acoustic instability in a collisionless plasma via two-dimensional (2D2V) Vlasov-Poisson numerical simulations. We initialize the system in a stable state and gradually drive it towards instability with an imposed, weak external electric field, thus avoiding super-critical initial conditions that are physically unrealizable. The nonlinear evolution of ion-acoustic turbulence (IAT) is characterized in detail, including the particles' distribution functions, particle heating, (two-dimensional) wave spectrum, and the resulting anomalous resistivity. An important result is that no steady saturated nonlinear state is ever reached in our simulations: strong ion heating suppresses the instability, which implies that the anomalous resistivity associated with IAT is transient and short-lived. Electron-acoustic waves (EAWs) are triggered during the late nonlinear evolution of the system, caused by strong modifications to the particle distribution induced by IAT.

We report on a first-principles numerical and theoretical study of plasma dynamo in a fully kinetic framework. By applying an external mechanical force to an initially unmagnetized plasma, we develop a self-consistent treatment of the generation of ``seed'' magnetic fields, the formation of turbulence, and the inductive amplification of fields by the fluctuation dynamo. Driven large-scale motions in an unmagnetized, weakly collisional plasma are subject to strong phase mixing, which leads to the development of thermal pressure anisotropy. This anisotropy triggers the Weibel instability, which produces filamentary ``seed'' magnetic fields on plasma-kinetic scales. The plasma is thereby magnetized, enabling efficient stretching and folding of the fields by the plasma motions and the development of Larmor-scale kinetic instabilities such as the firehose and mirror. The scattering of particles off the associated microscale magnetic fluctuations provides an effective viscosity, regulating the field morphology and turbulence. During this process, the seed field is further amplified by the fluctuation dynamo until they reach energy equipartition with the turbulent flow. By demonstrating that equipartition magnetic fields can be generated from an initially unmagnetized plasma through large-scale turbulent flows, this work has important implications for the origin and amplification of magnetic fields in the intracluster and intergalactic mediums., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures

The Vlasov equation is a nonlinear partial differential equation that provides a first-principles description of the dynamics of plasmas. Its linear limit is routinely used in plasma physics to investigate plasma oscillations and stability. In this work, we present a quantum algorithm that simulates the linearized Vlasov equation with and without collisions, in the one-dimensional, electrostatic limit. Rather than solving this equation in its native spatial and velocity phase-space, we adopt an efficient representation in the dual space yielded by a Fourier-Hermite expansion. The Fourier-Hermite representation is exponentially more compact, thus yielding a classical algorithm that can match the performance of a previously proposed quantum algorithm for this problem. This representation results in a system of linear ordinary differential equations which can be solved with well-developed quantum algorithms: Hamiltonian simulation in the collisionless case, and quantum ODE solvers in the collisional case. In particular, we demonstrate that a quadratic speedup in system size is attainable.

We report analytical and numerical investigations of sub-ion-scale turbulence in low-beta plasmas, focusing on the spectral properties of the fluctuations and electron heating. In the isothermal limit, the numerical results strongly support a description of the turbulence as a critically-balanced Kolmogorov-like cascade of kinetic Alfv\'en wave fluctuations, as amended by Boldyrev & Perez (Astrophys. J. Lett. 758, L44 (2012)) to include intermittent effects. When the constraint of isothermality is removed (i.e., with the inclusion of electron kinetic physics), the energy spectrum is found to steepen due to electron Landau damping, which is enabled by the local weakening of advective nonlinearities around current sheets, and yields significant energy dissipation via a velocity-space cascade. The use of a Hermite-polynomial representation to express the velocity-space dependence of the electron distribution function allows us to obtain an analytical, lowest-order solution for the Hermite moments of the distribution, which is borne out by numerical simulations., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures

Kinetic simulations of collisionless (or weakly collisional) plasmas using the Vlasov equation are often infeasible due to high resolution requirements and the exponential scaling of computational cost with respect to dimension. Recently, it has been proposed that matrix product state (MPS) methods, a quantum-inspired but classical algorithm, can be used to solve partial differential equations with exponential speed-up, provided that the solution can be compressed and efficiently represented as an MPS within some tolerable error threshold. In this work, we explore the practicality of MPS methods for solving the Vlasov-Poisson equations in 1D1V, and find that important features of linear and nonlinear dynamics, such as damping or growth rates and saturation amplitudes, can be captured while compressing the solution significantly. Furthermore, by comparing the performance of different mappings of the distribution functions onto the MPS, we develop an intuition of the MPS representation and its behavior in the context of solving the Vlasov-Poisson equations, which will be useful for extending these methods to higher dimensional problems., Comment: main text 14 pages, 7 figures; SI appended

A new model of nonlinear charged quantum relativistic fluids is presented. This model can be discretized into Discrete Time Quantum Walks (DTQWs), and a new hybrid (quantum-classical) algorithm for implementing these walks on NISQ devices is proposed. High resolution (up to $N=2^{17}$ grid points) hybrid numerical simulations of relativistic and non-relativistic hydrodynamical shocks on current IBM NISQs are performed with this algorithm and shown to reproduce equivalent simulations on classical computers. This work demonstrates that nonlinear fluid dynamics can be simulated on NISQs, and opens the door to simulating other, quantum and non-quantum fluids, including plasmas, with more general quantum walks and quantum automata., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We study in a fully kinetic framework the generation of seed magnetic fields through the Weibel instability driven in an initially unmagnetized plasma by a large-scale shear force. We develop an analytical model that describes the development of thermal pressure anisotropy via phase mixing, the ensuing exponential growth of magnetic fields in the linear Weibel stage, and its saturation when the seed magnetic fields become strong enough to instigate gyromotion of particles and thereby inhibit their free-streaming. The predicted scaling dependencies of the saturated seed fields on key parameters (e.g., ratio of system scale to electron skin depth, the forcing amplitude) are confirmed by 3D and 2D particle-in-cell simulations using an electron-positron plasma. This work demonstrates the spontaneous magnetization of a collisionless plasma through large-scale motions as simple as a shear flow, and therefore has important implications for magnetogenesis in dilute astrophysical systems., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures

The physical picture of interacting magnetic islands provides a useful paradigm for certain plasma dynamics in a variety of physical environments, such as the solar corona, the heliosheath, and the Earth's magnetosphere. In this work, we derive an island kinetic equation to describe the evolution of the island distribution function (in area and in flux of islands) subject to a collisional integral designed to account for the role of magnetic reconnection during island mergers. This equation is used to study the inverse transfer of magnetic energy through the coalescence of magnetic islands in 2D. We solve our island kinetic equation numerically for three different types of initial distribution: delta-distribution, Gaussian and power-law distribution. The time evolution of several key quantities is found to agree well with our analytical predictions: magnetic energy decays as $\tilde t^{-1}$, the number of islands decreases as $\tilde t^{-1}$, and the averaged area of islands grows as $\tilde t$, where $\tilde t$ is the time normalized to the characteristic reconnection time scale of islands. In Navier-Stokes turbulence, energy and helicity injected at large scales are subject to a joint direct cascade, with both quantities exhibiting a spectral scaling $\propto k^{-5/3}$. We demonstrate via direct numerical simulations that the two cascades are compatible due to the existence of a strong scale-dependent phase alignment between velocity and vorticity fluctuations, with the phase alignment angle scaling as $\cos\alpha_k\propto k^{-1}$.

Quasi-periodic plasmoid formation at the tip of magnetic streamer structures is observed to occur in experiments on the Big Red Ball as well as in simulations of these experiments performed with the extended-MHD code, NIMROD. This plasmoid formation is found to occur on a characteristic timescale dependent on pressure gradients and magnetic curvature in both experiment and simulation. Single mode, or laminar, plasmoids exist when the pressure gradient is modest, but give way to turbulent plasmoid ejection when the system drive is higher, producing plasmoids of many sizes. However, a critical pressure gradient is also observed, below which plasmoids are never formed. A simple heuristic model of this plasmoid formation process is presented and suggested to be a consequence of a dynamic loss of equilibrium in the high-$\beta$ region of the helmet streamer. This model is capable of explaining the periodicity of plasmoids observed in the experiment and simulations and produces plasmoid periods of 90 minutes when applied to 2D models of solar streamers with a height of $3R_\odot$. Nonlinear differential equations model diverse phenomena but are notoriously difficult to solve. While there has been extensive previous work on efficient quantum algorithms for linear differential equations, the linearity of quantum mechanics has limited analogous progress for the nonlinear case. Despite this obstacle, we develop a quantum algorithm for dissipative quadratic $n$-dimensional ordinary differential equations. Assuming $R < 1$, where $R$ is a parameter characterizing the ratio of the nonlinearity and forcing to the linear dissipation, this algorithm has complexity $T^2 q~\mathrm{poly}(\log T, \log n, \log 1/\epsilon)/\epsilon$, where $T$ is the evolution time, $\epsilon$ is the allowed error, and $q$ measures decay of the solution. This is an exponential improvement over the best previous quantum algorithms, whose complexity is exponential in $T$. While exponential decay precludes efficiency, driven equations can avoid this issue despite the presence of dissipation. Our algorithm uses the method of Carleman linearization, for which we give a novel convergence theorem. This method maps a system of nonlinear differential equations to an infinite-dimensional system of linear differential equations, which we discretize, truncate, and solve using the forward Euler method and the quantum linear system algorithm. We also provide a lower bound on the worst-case complexity of quantum algorithms for general quadratic differential equations, showing that the problem is intractable for $R \ge \sqrt{2}$. Finally, we discuss potential applications, showing that the $R < 1$ condition can be satisfied in realistic epidemiological models and giving numerical evidence that the method may describe a model of fluid dynamics even for larger values of $R$., Comment: 36 pages, 1 figure. In weakly-collisional plasma environments with sufficiently low electron beta, Alfv\'enic turbulence transforms into inertial Alfv\'enic turbulence at scales below the electron skin-depth, $k_\perp d_e\gtrsim 1$. We argue that, in inertial Alfv\'enic turbulence, both energy and generalized kinetic helicity exhibit direct cascades. We demonstrate that the two cascades are compatible due to the existence of a strong scale-dependence of the phase alignment angle between velocity and magnetic field fluctuations, with the phase alignment angle scaling as $\cos\alpha_k\propto k_{\perp}^{-1}$. The kinetic and magnetic energy spectra scale as $\propto k_{\perp}^{-5/3}$ and $\propto k_{\perp}^{-11/3}$, respectively. As a result of the dual direct cascade, the generalized-helicity spectrum scales as $\propto k^{-5/3}_{\perp}$, implying progressive balancing of the turbulence as the cascade proceeds to smaller scales in the $k_{\perp} d_e \gg 1$ range. Turbulent eddies exhibit a phase-space anisotropy $k_{\parallel} \propto k_{\perp}^{5/3}$, consistent with critically-balanced inertial Alfv\'en fluctuations. Our results may be applicable to a variety of geophysical, space, and astrophysical environments, including the Earth's magnetosheath and ionosphere, solar corona, non-relativistic pair plasmas, as well as to strongly rotating non-ionized fluids.

It has been recently shown numerically that there exists an inverse transfer of magnetic energy in decaying, nonhelical, magnetically dominated, magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in 3-dimensions (3D). We suggest that magnetic reconnection is the underlying physical mechanism responsible for this inverse transfer. In the two-dimensional (2D) case, the inverse transfer is easily inferred to be due to smaller magnetic islands merging to form larger ones via reconnection. We find that the scaling behaviour is similar between the 2D and the 3D cases, i.e., the magnetic energy evolves as $t^{-1}$, and the magnetic power spectrum follows a slope of $k^{-2}$. We show that on normalizing time by the magnetic reconnection timescale, the evolution curves of the magnetic field in systems with different Lundquist numbers collapse onto one another. Furthermore, transfer function plots show signatures of magnetic reconnection driving the inverse transfer. We also discuss the conserved quantities in the system and show that the behaviour of these quantities is similar between the 2D and 3D simulations, thus making the case that the dynamics in 3D could be approximately explained by what we understand in 2D. Lastly, we also conduct simulations where the magnetic field is subdominant to the flow. Here, too, we find an inverse transfer of magnetic energy in 3D. We report on an analytical and numerical study of the dynamics of a three-dimensional array of identical magnetic flux tubes in the reduced-magnetohydrodynamic description of the plasma. We propose that the long-time evolution of this system is dictated by flux-tube mergers and that such mergers are dynamically constrained by the conservation of the pertinent (ideal) invariants, {\it viz.} the magnetic potential and axial fluxes of each tube. We also propose that in the direction perpendicular to the merging plane, flux tubes evolve in critically-balanced fashion. These notions allow us to construct an analytical model for how quantities such as the magnetic energy and the energy-containing scale evolve as functions of time. Of particular importance is the conclusion that, like its two-dimensional counterpart, this system exhibits an inverse transfer of magnetic energy that terminates only at the system scale. We perform direct numerical simulations that confirm these predictions and reveal other interesting aspects of the evolution of the system. We find, for example, that the early time evolution is characterized by a sharp decay of the initial magnetic energy, which we attribute to the ubiquitous formation of current sheets. Recently, it has been realized that magnetic plasma turbulence and magnetic field reconnection are inherently related phenomena. Turbulent fluctuations generate regions of a sheared magnetic field that become unstable to the tearing instability and reconnection, thus modifying turbulence at the corresponding scales. In this contribution, we give a brief discussion of some recent results on tearing-mediated magnetic turbulence. We illustrate the main ideas of this rapidly developing field of study by concentrating on two important examples -- magnetohydrodynamic Alfv\'en turbulence and small-scale kinetic-Alfv\'en turbulence. Due to various potential applications of these phenomena in space physics and astrophysics, we specifically try not to overload the text by heavy analytical derivations, but rather present a qualitative discussion accessible to a non-expert in the theories of turbulence and reconnection., Comment: A book chapter in AGU Book "Solar and Heliospheric Plasma Structures" (to appear)

Recent analytical works on strong magnetized plasma turbulence have hypothesized the existence of a range of scales where the tearing instability may govern the energy cascade. In this paper, we estimate the conditions under which such tearing may give rise to full nonlinear magnetic reconnection in the turbulent eddies, thereby enabling significant energy conversion and dissipation. In a weakly collisional, low-electron-beta plasma, large-scale Alfv\'en turbulence transforms into inertial kinetic-Alfv\'en turbulence at scales smaller than the ion microscale (gyroscale or inertial scale). We propose that at such kinetic scales, the nonlinear dynamics tend to organize turbulent eddies into thin current sheets, consistent with the existence of two conserved integrals of the ideal equations, energy and helicity. The formation of strongly anisotropic structures is arrested by the tearing instability that sets a critical aspect ratio of the eddies at each scale $a$ in the plane perpendicular to the guide field. This aspect ratio is defined by the balance of the eddy turnover rate and the tearing rate, and varies from $(d_e/a)^{1/2}$ to $d_e/a$ depending on the assumed profile of the current sheets. The energy spectrum of the resulting turbulence varies from $k^{-8/3}$ to $k^{-3}$, and the corresponding spectral anisotropy with respect to the strong background magnetic field from $k_z\lesssim k_\perp^{2/3}$ to $k_z\lesssim k_\perp$., Comment: published version

Magnetic energy transfer from small to large scales due to successive magnetic island coalescence is investigated. A solvable analytical model is introduced and shown to correctly capture the evolution of the main quantities of interest, as borne out by numerical simulations. Magnetic reconnection is identified as the key mechanism enabling the inverse transfer, and setting its properties: magnetic energy decays as $\tilde t^{-1}$, where $\tilde t$ is time normalized to the (appropriately defined) reconnection timescale; and the correlation length of the field grows as $\tilde t^{1/2}$. Recent observational and analytical studies suggested that a new regime of kinetic turbulence may exist in plasma environments with low electron beta (Chen and Boldyrev, 2017). Such a regime, termed inertial kinetic-Alfv\'en turbulence, is relevant for the solar corona, Earth's magnetosheath, and other astrophysical systems where the electron and ion plasma beta parameters satisfy the condition $\beta_e\ll \beta_i\lesssim 1$. In this paper we present kinetic numerical simulations that confirm existence of the iKAW regime. Specifically, the simulations demonstrate a transition at scales below electron inertial length $d_e$ when $\beta_e\ll \beta_i\lesssim 1$. Spectral slopes and other statistical properties of turbulence at sub-$d_e$ scales are consistent with the phenomenological theory of inertial kinetic-Alfv\'en turbulence proposed by Chen and Boldyrev (2017) and with the recent observations in the Earth's magnetosheath.

Recent studies have suggested that the tearing instability may play a significant role in magnetic turbulence. In this work, we review the theory of the magnetohydrodynamic tearing instability in the general case of an arbitrary tearing parameter, which is relevant for applications in turbulence. We discuss a detailed derivation of the results for the standard Harris profile and accompany it by the derivation of the results for a lesser known sine-shaped profile. We devote special attention to the exact solution of the inner equation, which is the central result in the theory of tearing instability. We also briefly discuss the influence of shear flows on tearing instability in magnetic structures. We investigate analytically and numerically the semi-collisional regime of the plasmoid instability, defined by the inequality $\delta_{SP} \gg \rho_s \gg \delta_{in}$, where $\delta_{SP}$ is the width of a Sweet-Parker current sheet, $\rho_S$ is the ion sound Larmor radius, and $\delta_{in}$ is width of boundary layer that arises in the plasmoid instability analysis. Theoretically, this regime is predicted to exist if the Lundquist number $S$ and the length of the current sheet $L$ are such that $(L/\rho_S)^{14/9} < S <(L/\rho_S)^2$ (for a sinusoidal-like magnetic configuration; for a Harris-type sheet the lower bound is replaced with $(L/\rho_S)^{8/5}$). These bounds are validated numerically by means of simulations using a reduced gyrokinetic model (Zocco & Schekochihin, $\it{Physics~of~Plasmas}$, ${\bf 18}$, 2011) conducted with the code $\tt{Viriato}$. Importantly, this regime is conjectured to allow for plasmoid formation at relatively low, experimentally accessible, values of the Lundquist number. Our simulations obtain plasmoid instability at values of $S$ as low as $\sim 250$. The simulations do not prescribe a Sweet-Parker sheet; rather, one is formed self-consistenly during the nonlinear evolution of the initial tearing mode configuration. It has been proposed recently by Loureiro & Boldyrev [Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 245101 (2017)] and Mallet et al. [Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc. 468, 4862 (2017)] that strongly anisotropic current sheets formed in the inertial range of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence become affected by the tearing instability at scales smaller than a critical scale $\lambda_\mathrm{c}$, and larger than the dissipation scale of turbulence. If true, this process can modify the nature of energy cascade at smaller scales, leading to a new, tearing-mediated regime of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. In this work we present a numerical study of strongly anisotropic, two-dimensional turbulent eddies, and we demonstrate that the tearing instability can indeed compete with their nonlinear evolution. We present two-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of the fully kinetic collisionless magnetorotational instability (MRI) in weakly magnetized (high $\beta$) pair plasma. The central result of this numerical analysis is the emergence of a self-induced turbulent regime in the saturation state of the collisionless MRI, which can only be captured for large enough simulation domains. One of the underlying mechanisms for the development of this turbulent state is the drift-kink instability (DKI) of the current sheets resulting from the nonlinear evolution of the channel modes. The onset of the DKI can only be observed for simulation domain sizes exceeding several linear MRI wavelengths. The DKI, together with ensuing magnetic reconnection, activate the turbulent motion of the plasma in the late stage of the nonlinear evolution of the MRI. At steady state, the magnetic energy has an MHD-like spectrum with a slope of $k^{-5/3}$ for $k\rho<1$ and $k^{-3}$ for sub-Larmor scale ($k\rho>1$). We also examine the role of the collisionless MRI and associated magnetic reconnection in the development of pressure anisotropy. We study the stability of the system due to this pressure anisotropy, observing the development of mirror instability during the early-stage of the MRI. We further discuss the importance of magnetic reconnection for particle acceleration during the turbulence regime. Symmetries of a fluid-gyrokinetic model are investigated using Lie group techniques. Specifically the nonlinear system constructed by Zocco and Schekochihin (Zocco & Schekochihin 2011), which combines nonlinear fluid equations with a drift-kinetic description of parallel electron dynamics, is studied. Significantly, this model is fully gyrokinetic, allowing for arbitrary k_perp rho_i , where k_perp is the perpendicular wave vector of the fluctuations and rho_i the ion gyroradius. The model includes integral operators corresponding to gyroaveraging as well as the moment equations relating fluid variables to the kinetic distribution function. A large variety of exact symmetries is uncovered, some of which have unexpected form. Using these results, new nonlinear solutions are constructed, including a helical generalization of the Chapman-Kendall solution for a collapsing current sheet.

Sweet-Parker current sheets in high Lundquist number plasmas are unstable to tearing, suggesting they will not form in physical systems. Understanding magnetic reconnection thus requires study of the stability of a current sheet as it forms. Formation can occur due to sheared, sub-Alfv\'enic incompressible flows which narrow the sheet. Standard tearing theory (Furth et al. 1963; Coppi et al. 1976; Rutherford 1973) is not immediately applicable to such forming sheets for two reasons: first, because the flow introduces terms not present in the standard calculation; second, because the changing equilibrium introduces time dependence to terms which are constant in the standard calculation, complicating the formulation of an eigenvalue problem. This paper adapts standard tearing mode analysis to confront these challenges. In an initial phase when any perturbations are primarily governed by ideal MHD, a coordinate transformation reveals that the flow compresses and stretches perturbations. A multiple scale formulation describes how linear tearing mode theory (Furth et al. 1963; Coppi et al. 1976) can be applied to an equilibrium changing under flow, showing that the flow affects the separable exponential growth only implicitly, by making the standard scalings time-dependent. In the nonlinear Rutherford stage, the coordinate transformation shows that standard theory can be adapted by adding to the stationary rates time dependence and an additional term due to the strengthening equilibrium magnetic field. Overall, this understanding supports the use of flow-free scalings with slight modifications to study tearing in a forming sheet.

Magnetic field fluctuations in MHD turbulence can be viewed as current sheets that are progressively more anisotropic at smaller scales. As suggested by Loureiro & Boldyrev (2017) and Mallet et al (2017), below a certain critical thickness $\lambda_c$ such current sheets become tearing-unstable. We propose that the tearing instability changes the effective alignment of the magnetic field lines in such a way as to balance the eddy turnover rate at all scales smaller than $\lambda_c$. As a result, turbulent fluctuations become progressively less anisotropic at smaller scales, with the alignment angle increasing as $\theta \sim (\lambda/\lambda_*)^{-4/5+\beta}$, where $\lambda_*\sim L_0 S_0^{-3/4}$ is the resistive dissipation scale. Here $L_0$ is the outer scale of the turbulence, $S_0$ is the corresponding Lundquist number, and {$0\leq \beta <4/5$} is a parameter. The resulting Fourier energy spectrum is $E(k_\perp)\propto k_\perp^{-11/5+2\beta/3}$, where $k_\perp$ is the wavenumber normal to the local mean magnetic field, and the critical scale is $\lambda_c\sim S_L^{-(4-5\beta)/(7-{20\beta/3})}$. The simplest model corresponds to $\beta=0$, in which case the predicted scaling formally agrees with one of the solutions obtained in (Mallet et al 2017) from a discrete hierarchical model of abruptly collapsing current sheets, an approach different and complementary to ours. We also show that the reconnection-mediated interval is non-universal with respect to the dissipation mechanism. Hyper-resistivity of the form ${\tilde \eta}k^{2+2s}$ leads (in the simplest case of $\beta=0$) to the different transition scale $\lambda_c\sim L_0{\tilde S}_0^{-4/(7+9s)}$ and the energy spectrum $E(k_\perp)\propto k_\perp^{-(11+9s)/(5+3s)}$, where ${\tilde S}_0$ is the corresponding hyper-resistive Lundquist number., Comment: submitted for publication

The properties of plasma turbulence in a poloidally limited scrape-off layer (SOL) are addressed, with focus on ISTTOK, a large aspect ratio tokamak with a circular cross section. Theoretical investigations based on the drift-reduced Braginskii equations are carried out through linear calculations and non-linear simulations, in two- and three-dimensional geometries. The linear instabilities driving turbulence and the mechanisms that set the amplitude of turbulence as well as the SOL width are identified. A clear asymmetry is shown to exist between the low-field and the high-field sides of the machine. The recent realization that Sweet-Parker current sheets are violently unstable to the secondary tearing (plasmoid) instability implies that such current sheets cannot occur in real systems. This suggests that, in order to understand the onset of magnetic reconnection, one needs to consider the growth of the tearing instability in a current layer as it is being formed. Such an analysis is performed here in the context of nonlinear resistive MHD for a generic time-dependent equilibrium representing a gradually forming current sheet. It is shown that two onset regimes, single-island and multi-island, are possible, depending on the rate of current sheet formation. A simple model is used to compute the criterion for transition between these two regimes, as well as the reconnection onset time and the current sheet parameters at that moment. Recent work demonstrated that breaking the up-down symmetry of tokamak flux surfaces removes a constraint that limits intrinsic momentum transport, and hence toroidal rotation, to be small. We show, through MHD analysis, that ellipticity is most effective at introducing up-down asymmetry throughout the plasma. We detail an extension to GS2, a local $\delta f$ gyrokinetic code that self-consistently calculates momentum transport, to permit up-down asymmetric configurations. Tokamaks with tilted elliptical poloidal cross-sections were simulated to determine nonlinear momentum transport. The results, which are consistent with experiment in magnitude, suggest that a toroidal velocity gradient, $(\partial u_{\zeta i} / \partial \rho) / v_{th i}$, of 5% of the temperature gradient, $(\partial T_{i} / \partial \rho) / T_{i}$, is sustainable. Here $v_{th i}$ is the ion thermal speed, $u_{\zeta i}$ is the ion toroidal mean flow, $\rho$ is the minor radial coordinate normalized to the tokamak minor radius, and $T_{i}$ is the ion temperature. Since other intrinsic momentum transport mechanisms scale poorly to larger machines, these results indicate that up-down asymmetry is the most feasible method to generate the current experimentally-measured rotation levels in reactor-sized devices.
