The decomposition of methane in the glow discharge at liquid‐air temperature has been investigated under different experimental conditions. Contrary to the earlier conclusion of Brewer and Kueck that the reaction products are only hydrogen and ethylene, they are invariably found to be hydrogen, a polymer of composition (CH2)n, and ethane, ethylene, and acetylene, the last three resulting presumably from the mutual interaction of the primary active species CH4+, CH3+, CH2+, CH+ formed from methane. In the absence of hydrogen, ethane predominates; in its presence, ethylene and acetylene proportions increase due, it is suggested, to the dehydrogenating action of atomic hydrogen. In the negative glow, the rate of methane decomposition is directly proportional to the current, and the electronic efficiency, i.e., the number of methane molecules decomposed per electronic charge, is ∼10 both for alternating and direct current. The thermal decomposition of gaseous aluminum trimethyl, in the absence of hydrogen, is nearly 94 percent homogeneous and of kinetic order three‐halves over the pressure range 10 to 85 mm measured at room temperature. The reaction products consist largely of methane and to a lesser extent ethane, ethylene, and hydrogen and a solid deposit on the walls of the reaction vessel. A reaction mechanism involving methyl radicals is proposed. The apparent energy of activation, calculated on this basis, is found to be 45 kcal., in agreement with the experimentally determined figure. The high ratio of methane produced to alkyl decomposed suggests that aluminum trimethyl in the vapor state at room temperatures must consist at least of tetrameric molecular complexes. In the presence of hydrogen, both the decomposition rate and the energy of activation are reduced as compared to the decomposition of the pure alkyl, a puzzling effect for which no satisfactory explanation can at present be offered. Photochemically, the presence of hydrogen seems to have little effect on the over‐all decomposition but enhances the relative amount of methane slightly. In this, aluminum trimethyl appears to differ from mercury dimethyl which is known to decompose faster thermally and photochemically in the presence of hydrogen than in its absence.

The experimental results of Waring and Morton on the thermal decomposition of tin tetramethyl have been re-examined and shown to fit in better with a three-halves order rate constant and a free radical kinetic mechanism than with a unimolecular rate constant and a molecular rearrangement mechanism put forwardby the authors. Also, the results of Helm and Mack on the thermal decomposi­tion of silicon tetramethvl in the low pressure region. not amenable to first or second order kinetic expressions, have satisfactorily been interpreted terms of three-halve; order reaction involving a free radical mechanism.

ANACARDIC acid, the major component of the liquid extracted by solvent from cashew-nut shells1, was regarded as a homogeneous chemical entity containing in its aliphatic side-chain of fifteen carbon atoms two double bonds until recently, when it was shown by Izzo and Dawson2 to be in fact a mixture of olefinic components of which they identified the mono-olefin in the form of a crystalline glycol of the methylated anacardic acid. The present communication reports the complete separation of the mixture into its several components and the determination of their olefinic structure.
