In Minkowski spacetime quantum field theory, each stationary motion is associated with an effective, energy-dependent notion of temperature, which generalises the familiar Unruh temperature of uniform linear acceleration. Motivated by current experimental interest in circular motion, we analyse the effective temperature for drifted Rindler motion, generated by a boost and a spacelike translation (drift), and the way in which drifted Rindler motion can be smoothly deformed to circular motion through a third type of motion known as parator. For an Unruh-DeWitt detector coupled linearly to a massless scalar field in 2+1 and 3+1 spacetime dimensions, we establish analytic results in the limits of large gap, small gap and large drift speed. For fixed proper acceleration, the drifted Rindler temperature remains bounded in the large gap limit, in contrast to the circular motion temperature, which can be arbitrarily large in this limit. Finally, in 2+1 dimensions, we trace the vanishing of the circular motion temperature in the small gap limit to the weak decay of the Wightman function, and we show that, among all types of stationary motion in all dimensions, this phenomenon is unique to 2+1 dimensions and therein to circular and parator motion., Comment: 31 pages, 1 table

We analyse the excitations and de-excitations of an inertial Unruh-DeWitt detector in the $(1+1)$-dimensional expanding Milne cosmology with compact spatial sections, coupled to a real massless scalar field with either untwisted or twisted boundary conditions, prepared in the conformal vacuum. We find the detector's response as a function of the energy gap, the Milne spatial circumference parameter, the interaction duration, the age of the universe at the switch-on moment, the detector's peculiar velocity at the switch-on moment, and, for the untwisted field, the state of the zero mode. Asymptotic analytic results are obtained at large energy gap and at large circumference parameter, in each case recovering the Minkowski vacuum response in the leading order, and in the double limit of small circumference parameter and late cosmological time, recovering the response in a static Minkowski cylinder. Anti-de Sitter spacetime and the static patch of de Sitter spacetime are arenas for investigating thermal and finite-size effects seen by an accelerated quantum observer. We consider an Unruh-DeWitt detector in uniform circular motion coupled to a conformal scalar field in $(2+1)$-dimensional de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spacetimes in the limit of a small cosmological constant $\Lambda$. In anti-de Sitter spacetime, where $\Lambda$ mimics spatial confinement, we find that the resonance peaks in the detector's response closely match those of a detector in Minkowski space with a cylindrical boundary, but with curvature corrections, more significant when the field has an ambient temperature. In the static patch of de Sitter spacetime, in the Euclidean vacuum, we show that the leading curvature correction to the detector's response is proportional to $\Lambda$, as in zero temperature anti-de Sitter, whilst the temperature corrections decay exponentially as $\Lambda \to 0$., Comment: 18 pages: 10 pages + 8 pages appendices. 1 figure

A communication protocol with non-zero quantum capacity is found when the two communicating parts are particle detector models in (3+1)-dimensional spacetime. In particular, as detectors, we consider two harmonic oscillators interacting with a scalar field, whose evolution is generalized for whatever background spacetime and whatever spacetime smearing of the detectors. We then specialize to Minkowski spacetime and an initial Minkowski vacuum, considering a rapid interaction between the field and the two detectors, studying the case where the receiver is static and the sender is moving. The possibility to have a quantum capacity greater than zero stems from a relative acceleration between the detectors. Indeed, no reliable quantum communication is possible when the two detectors are static or moving inertially with respect to each other, but a reliable quantum communication can be achieved between a uniformly accelerated sender and an inertial receiver., Comment: 29 pages, 4 figures

An Unruh-DeWitt (UDW) detector falling radially into a four-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole, coupled linearly to a massless scalar field that has been prepared in the Hartle-Hawking or Unruh state, has recently been shown to exhibit a local extremum in its transition probability near the black hole horizon [K.K. Ng et al., New J. Phys. 24 (2022) 103018]. We show that a similar phenomenon is present in the transition rate of a UDW detector falling radially into a spinless Ba\~nados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole, with the scalar field prepared in the Hartle-Hawking state. We give extensive numerical results as a function of the detector's energy gap, the black hole's mass, and the detector's drop-off radius. It is well known that the experience of a linearly accelerated observer with acceleration $a$, interacting with a massless scalar field in its vacuum state in $3+1$ Minkowski spacetime, is identical to that of a static observer interacting with a massless scalar field in a thermal state of temperature $a/2\pi$ in $3+1$ Minkowski spacetime. We study the robustness of this duality by comparing an observer undergoing circular motion in a thermal bath with an observer that undergoes circular motion around a linearly accelerated trajectory. (1+1)-dimensional locally de Sitter Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies with compact spatial sections allow cosh, sinh and exponential evolution laws, each with a freely-specifiable spatial circumference parameter, and the value of this parameter has an invariant geometric meaning for the cosh and sinh evolution laws. We identify geometrically preferred states for a quantised massive scalar field on these cosmologies, some singled out by adiabatic criteria in the distant past, with an ambiguity remaining due to a massive zero mode, and others induced from the Euclidean vacuum on standard (1+1)-dimensional de Sitter space by a quotient construction. We show that a comoving quantum observer, modelled as an Unruh-DeWitt detector, can distinguish these states from the Euclidean vacuum on standard de Sitter space. The Unruh effect states that a uniformly linearly accelerated observer with proper acceleration $a$ experiences the Minkowski vacuum as a thermal state at temperature $T_U=a/(2\pi)$. An observer in uniform circular motion experiences a similar effective temperature, operationally defined in terms of excitation and de-excitation rates, and physically interpretable in terms of synchrotron radiation, but this effective temperature depends not just on the acceleration but also on the orbital speed and the excitation energy. In this paper we consider an observer in uniform circular motion when the Minkowski vacuum is replaced by an ambient thermal bath, and we address the interplay of ambient temperature, Doppler effect, acceleration, and excitation energy. Specifically, we consider a massless scalar field in $2 + 1$ spacetime dimensions, probed by an Unruh-DeWitt detector, in a Minkowski (rather than proper) time formulation: this setting describes proposed analogue spacetime systems in which the effect may become experimentally testable, and in which an ambient temperature will necessarily be present. We establish analytic results for the observer's effective temperature in several asymptotic regions of the parameter space and provide numerical results in the interpolating regions, finding that an acceleration effect can be identified even when the Doppler effect dominates the overall magnitude of the response. An accelerated observer moving through empty space sees particles appearing and disappearing, while an observer with a constant velocity does not register any particles. This phenomenon, generally known as the Unruh effect, relies on an initial vacuum state, thereby unifying the experience of all inertial observers. We propose an experiment to probe this observer-dependent detector response, using a laser beam in circular motion as a local detector of superfluid helium-4 surface modes or third sound waves. To assess experimental feasibility, we develop a theoretical framework to include a non-zero temperature initial state. We find that an acceleration-dependent signal persists, independent of the initial temperature. We analyse the energy cost of building or demolishing a wall for a massless Dirac field in (1+1)-dimensional Minkowski spacetime and the response of an Unruh-DeWitt particle detector to the generated radiation. For any smoothly-evolving wall, both the field's energy density and the detector's response are finite. In the limit of rapid wall creation or demolition, the energy density displays a delta function squared divergence. By contrast, the response of an Unruh-DeWitt detector, evaluated within first-order perturbation theory, diverges only logarithmically in the duration of the wall evolution. The results add to the evidence that a localised matter system may not be as sensitive to the rapid wall creation as the local expectation values of field observables. We summarize the discussions at a virtual Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space concerning the status of cold atom technologies, the prospective scientific and societal opportunities offered by their deployment in space, and the developments needed before cold atoms could be operated in space. The cold atom technologies discussed include atomic clocks, quantum gravimeters and accelerometers, and atom interferometers. Prospective applications include metrology, geodesy and measurement of terrestrial mass change due to, e.g., climate change, and fundamental science experiments such as tests of the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, measurements of gravitational waves and tests of quantum mechanics. We review the current status of cold atom technologies and outline the requirements for their space qualification, including the development paths and the corresponding technical milestones, and identifying possible pathfinder missions to pave the way for missions to exploit the full potential of cold atoms in space. We analyse a quantum observer who falls geodesically towards the Cauchy horizon of a $(1+1)$-dimensional eternal black hole spacetime with the global structure of the non-extremal Reissner-Nordstr\"om solution. The observer interacts with a massless scalar field, using an Unruh-DeWitt detector coupled linearly to the proper time derivative of the field, and by measuring the local energy density of the field. Taking the field to be initially prepared in the Hartle-Hawking-Israel (HHI) state or the Unruh state, we find that both the detector's transition rate and the local energy density generically diverge on approaching the Cauchy horizon, respectively proportionally to the inverse and the inverse square of the proper time to the horizon, and in the Unruh state the divergences on approaching one of the branches of the Cauchy horizon are independent of the surface gravities. When the outer and inner horizons have equal surface gravities, the divergences disappear altogether in the HHI state and for one of the Cauchy horizon branches in the Unruh state. We analyse numerically the transitions in an Unruh-DeWitt detector, coupled linearly to a massless scalar field, in radial infall in (3+1)-dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime. In the Hartle-Hawking and Unruh states, the transition probability attains a small local extremum near the horizon-crossing and is then moderately enhanced on approaching the singularity. In the Boulware state, the transition probability drops on approaching the horizon. We ask whether soft photons, defined by asymptotic charges, can have consequences for the outcome of localised quantum processes. We consider a spatially localised two-state system, at rest in flat spacetime, coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge invariant charged scalar field. We find that the system's de-excitation rate does depend on the soft charges that correspond to the radial component of the electric field dressing at the asymptotic infinity; the excitation rate, by contrast, remains zero, regardless of the soft charges. We examine a quantised massive scalar field in $(1+1)$-dimensional spatially compact cosmological spacetimes in which the early time and late time expansion laws provide distinguished definitions of Fock "in" and "out" vacua, with the possible exception of the spatially constant sector, which may become effectively massless at early or late times. We show, generalising the work of Ford and Pathinayake, that when such a massive zero mode occurs, the freedom in the respective "in" and "out" states is a family with two real parameters. As an application, we consider massive untwisted and twisted scalar fields in the $(1+1)$-dimensional spatially compact Milne spacetime, where the untwisted field has a massive "in" zero mode. We demonstrate, by a combination of analytic and numerical methods, that the choice of the massive "in" zero mode state has a significant effect on the response of an inertial Unruh-DeWitt detector, especially in the excitation part of the spectrum. The detector's peculiar velocity with respect to comoving cosmological observers has the strongest effect in the "in" vacuum of the untwisted field, where it shifts the excitation and de-excitation resonances towards higher values of the detector's energy gap., Comment: 37 pages, 13 figures

The Unruh effect states that a uniformly linearly accelerated observer with proper acceleration $a$ experiences Minkowski vacuum as a thermal state in the temperature $T_{\text{lin}} = a/(2\pi)$, operationally measurable via the detailed balance condition between excitation and de-excitation probabilities. An observer in uniform circular motion experiences a similar Unruh-type temperature $T_{\text{circ}}$, operationally measurable via the detailed balance condition, but $T_{\text{circ}}$ depends not just on the proper acceleration but also on the orbital radius and on the excitation energy. We establish analytic results for $T_{\text{circ}}$ for a massless scalar field in $3+1$ and $2+1$ spacetime dimensions in several asymptotic regions of the parameter space, and we give numerical results in the interpolating regions. In the ultrarelativistic limit, we verify that in $3+1$ dimensions $T_{\text{circ}}$ is of the order of $T_{\text{lin}}$ uniformly in the energy, as previously found by Unruh, but in $2+1$ dimensions $T_{\text{circ}}$ is significantly lower at low energies. We translate these results to an analogue spacetime nonrelativistic field theory in which the circular acceleration effects may become experimentally testable in the near future. The Unruh effect predicts a thermal response for an accelerated detector moving through the vacuum. Here we propose an interferometric scheme to observe an analogue of the circular Unruh effect using a localized laser coupled to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Quantum fluctuations in the condensate are governed by an effective relativistic field theory, and as demonstrated, the coupled laser field acts as an effective Unruh-DeWitt detector thereof. The effective speed of light is lowered by 12 orders of magnitude to the sound velocity in the BEC. We develop a consistent analytic approach to determine the conditions under which slow roll inflation can arise when the inflaton is the same scalar field that is responsible for the bounce in Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC). We find that the requirement that the energy density of the field is fixed at the bounce having to match a critical density has important consequences for its future evolution. For a generic potential with a minimum, we find different scenarios depending on the initial velocity of the field and whether it begins life in a kinetic or potential energy dominated regime. For chaotic potentials that start in a kinetic dominated regime, we find an initial phase of superinflation independent of the shape of the potential followed by a damping phase which slows the inflaton down, forcing it to turnaround and naturally enter a phase of slow-roll inflation. If we begin in a potential energy dominated regime, then the field undergoes a period where the corrections present in LQC damp its evolution once again forcing it to turnaround and enter a phase of slow roll inflation. On the other hand we show for the Starobinsky potential that inflation never occurs when we begin in a potential dominated regime. In fact traditional Starobinsky inflation has to start in a kinetic energy dominated regime, with corresponding tighter constraints on the initial value of the field for successful inflation than in the conventional case. Comparing our analytic results to published numerical ones, we find remarkable agreement especially when we consider the different epochs that are involved. We study relativistic effects on polarised photons that travel in a curved spacetime. As a concrete application, we consider photons in the gravitational field of the Earth, on a closed path that starts at a terrestial laboratory, is reflected at one or more satellites, and finally returns to the laboratory. We find that the photons acquire a non-trivial Wigner phase already when the gravitational field is static, such as the Schwarzschild spacetime, where previous studies have found a trivial Wigner phase for closed photon paths. A gauge-invariant description of this nontrivial Wigner phase remains an open question, to be resolved before the formalism can provide predictions for experiments., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

We compare the predictions of the fundamentally motivated minimal coupling ($\hat{\boldsymbol{p}}\cdot\hat{\boldsymbol{A}}$) and the ubiquitous dipole coupling ($\hat{\boldsymbol{x}}\cdot\hat{\boldsymbol{E}}$) in the light-matter interaction. By studying the light-matter interaction for hydrogen-like atoms we find that the dipole approximation cannot be a-priori justified to analyze the physics of vacuum excitations (a very important phenomenon in relativistic quantum information) since a dominant wavelength is absent in those problems, no matter how small (as compared to any frequency scale) the atom is. Remarkably, we show that the dipole approximation in those regimes can still be valid as long as the interaction time is longer than the light-crossing time of the atoms, which is a very reasonable assumption. Ultracold fermionic atoms in an optical lattice, with a sudden position-dependent change (a quench) in the effective dispersion relation, have been proposed by Rodr\'iguez-Laguna et al. as an analogue spacetime test of the Unruh effect. We provide new support for this analogue by analysing a massless scalar field on a $(1+1)$-dimensional continuum spacetime with a similar quench: an early time Minkowski region is joined at a constant time surface, representing the quench, to a late time static region in which left and right asymptotically Rindler domains are connected by a smooth negative curvature bridge. We show that the quench is energetically mild, and late time static observers, modelled as a derivative-coupling Unruh-DeWitt detector, see thermality, in a temperature that equals the Unruh temperature for observers in the asymptotic Rindler domains. The Unruh effect hence prevails, despite the energy injected into the field by the quench and despite the absence of a late time Killing horizon. We study memory effects as information backflow for an accelerating two-level detector weakly interacting with a scalar field in the Minkowski vacuum. This is the framework of the well-known Unruh effect: the detector behaves as if it were in a thermal bath with a temperature proportional to its acceleration. Here we show that if we relax the usual assumption of an eternally uniformly accelerating system, and we instead consider the more realistic case in which a finite-size detector starts accelerating at a certain time, information backflow may appear in the dynamics. Our results demonstrate the existence of a connection between the trajectory of the detector in Minkowski space and the behavior of information flow. This allows us to inspect the Unruh effect under a new light, making use of the latest developments in quantum information theory and open quantum systems., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We study the creation of a spherical, finite radius source for a quantized massless scalar field in 3+1 dimensions. The goal is to model the breakdown of correlations that has been proposed to occur at the horizon of an evaporating black hole. We do this by introducing at fixed radius $r=a$ a one parameter family of self-adjoint extensions of the three dimensional Laplacian operator that interpolate between the condition that the values and the derivatives on the two sides of $r=a$ coincide for $t\le0$ (no wall) and the two-sided Dirichlet boundary condition for $t \ge 1/\lambda$ (fully-developed wall). Creation of the shell produces null, spherical pulses of energy on either side of the shell, one ingoing and the other outgoing. The renormalized energy density $\langle T_{00}\rangle$ diverges to positive infinity in the outgoing energy pulse, just outside the light cone of the fully-formed wall at $t=1/\lambda$. Unlike in the 3+1 point source creation, there is no persistent memory cloud of energy. As in the creation of a 1+1 dimensional wall, the response of an Unruh-DeWitt detector in the post-shell region is independent of the time scale for shell formation and is finite. We study the quantum effects of a test Klein-Gordon field in a Vaidya spacetime consisting of a collapsing null shell that forms a Schwazschild black hole, by explicitly obtaining, in a $(1+1)$-dimensional model, the Wightman function, the renormalised stress-energy tensor, and by analysing particle detector rates along stationary orbits in the exterior black hole region, and make a comparison with the folklore that the Unruh state is the state that emerges from black hole formation. In the causal future of the shell, we find a negative ingoing flux at the horizon that agrees precisely with the Unruh state calculation, and is the source of black hole radiation, while in the future null infinity we find that the radiation flux output in the Unruh state is an upper bound for the positive outgoing flux in the collapsing null shell spacetime. This indicates that back-reaction estimates based on Unruh state calculations over-estimate the energy output carried by so-called pre-Hawking radiation. The value of the output predicted by the Unruh state is however approached exponentially fast. Finally, we find that at late times, stationary observers in the exterior black hole region in the collapsing shell spacetime detect the local Hawking temperature, which is also well characterised by the Unruh state, coming from right-movers. Black holes in Lorentz-violating theories have been claimed to violate the second law of thermodynamics by perpetual motion energy extraction. We revisit this question for a Penrose splitting process in a spherically symmetric setting with two species of particles that move on radial geodesics that extend to infinity. We show that energy extraction by this process cannot happen in any theory in which gravity is attractive, in the sense of a geometric inequality that we describe. We consider an Unruh-DeWitt detector in inertial and circular motion in Minkowski spacetime of arbitrary dimension, coupled to a quantised scalar field with the Lorentz-violating dispersion relation $\omega = |{\bf k}|\, f (|{\bf k}|/M_{\star})$, where $M_{\star}$ is the Lorentz-breaking scale. Assuming that $f$ dips below unity somewhere, we show that an inertial detector experiences large low energy Lorentz violations in all spacetime dimensions greater than two, generalising previous results in four dimensions. For a detector in circular motion, we show that a similar low energy Lorentz violation occurs in three spacetime dimensions, and we lay the analytic groundwork for examining circular motion in all dimensions greater than three, generalising previous work by Stargen, Kajuri and Sriramkumar in four dimensions. The Rindler horizon in Minkowski spacetime can be implanted with supertranslation hair by a matter shock wave without planar symmetry, and the hair is observable as a supertranslation memory on the Rindler family of uniformly linearly accelerated observers. We show that this classical memory is accompanied by a supertranslation quantum memory that modulates the entanglement between the opposing Rindler wedges in quantum field theory. Recently, Hawking, Perry and Strominger described a physical process that implants supertranslational hair on a Schwarzschild black hole by an infalling matter shock wave without spherical symmetry. Using the BMS-type symmetries of the Rindler horizon, we present an analogous process that implants supertranslational hair on a Rindler horizon by a matter shock wave without planar symmetry, and we investigate the corresponding memory effect on the Rindler family of uniformly linearly accelerated observers. We assume each observer to remain linearly uniformly accelerated through the wave, in the sense of the curved spacetime generalisation of the Letaw-Frenet equations. Starting with a family of observers who follow the orbits of a single boost Killing vector before the wave, we find that after the wave has passed, each observer still follows the orbit of a boost Killing vector but this boost differs from trajectory to trajectory, and the trajectory-dependence carries a memory of the planar inhomogeneity of the wave. We show, under a very general set of assumptions, that pairs of identical particle detectors in spacelike separation, such as atomic probes, can only harvest entanglement from the vacuum state of a quantum field when they have a non-zero energy gap. Furthermore, we show that degenerate probes are strongly challenged to become entangled through their interaction through scalar and electromagnetic fields even in full light-contact. We relate these results to previous literature on remote entanglement generation and entanglement harvesting, giving insight into the energy gap's protective role against local noise, which prevents the detectors from getting entangled through the interaction with the field., Comment: 10 pages. We analyse the smooth and sharp creation of a pointlike source for a quantised massless scalar field in $(3+1)$-dimensional Minkowski spacetime, as a model for the breakdown of correlations that has been proposed to occur at the horizon of an evaporating black hole. The creation is implemented by a time-dependent self-adjointness parameter at the excised spatial origin. In a smooth creation, the renormalised energy density $\langle T_{00} \rangle$ is well defined away from the source, but it is unbounded both above and below: the outgoing pulse contains an infinite negative energy, while a cloud of infinite positive energy lingers near the fully-formed source. In the sharp creation limit, $\langle T_{00} \rangle$ diverges everywhere in the timelike future of the creation event, and so does the response of an Unruh-DeWitt detector that operates in the timelike future of the creation event. We examine an Unruh-DeWitt particle detector that is coupled linearly to the scalar density of a massless Dirac field in Minkowski spacetimes of dimension $d\ge2$ and on the static Minkowski cylinder in spacetime dimension two, allowing the detector's motion to remain arbitrary and working to leading order in perturbation theory. In $d$-dimensional Minkowski, with the field in the usual Fock vacuum, we show that the detector's response is identical to that of a detector coupled linearly to a massless scalar field in $2d$-dimensional Minkowski. In the special case of uniform linear acceleration, the detector's response hence exhibits the Unruh effect with a Planckian factor in both even and odd dimensions, in contrast to the Rindler power spectrum of the Dirac field, which has a Planckian factor for odd $d$ but a Fermi-Dirac factor for even~$d$. On the two-dimensional cylinder, we set the oscillator modes in the usual Fock vacuum but allow an arbitrary state for the zero mode of the periodic spinor. We show that the detector's response distinguishes the periodic and antiperiodic spin structures, and the zero mode of the periodic spinor contributes to the response by a state-dependent but well defined amount. Explicit analytic and numerical results on the cylinder are obtained for inertial and uniformly accelerated trajectories, recovering the $d=2$ Minkowski results in the limit of large circumference. How long does a uniformly accelerated observer need to interact with a quantum field in order to record thermality in the Unruh temperature? We address this question for a pointlike Unruh-DeWitt detector, coupled linearly to a real Klein-Gordon field of mass $m\ge0$ and treated within first order perturbation theory, in the limit of large detector energy gap $E_{\text{gap}}$. We first show that when the interaction duration $\Delta T$ is fixed, thermality in the sense of detailed balance cannot hold as $E_{\text{gap}}\to\infty$, and this property generalises from the Unruh effect to any Kubo-Martin-Schwinger state satisfying certain technical conditions. We then specialise to a massless field in four spacetime dimensions and show that detailed balance does hold when $\Delta T$ grows as a power-law in $E_{\text{gap}}$ as $E_{\text{gap}}\to\infty$, provided the switch-on and switch-off intervals are stretched proportionally to $\Delta T$ and the switching function has sufficiently strong Fourier decay. By contrast, if $\Delta T$ grows by stretching a plateau in which the interaction remains at constant strength but keeping the duration of the switch-on and switch-off intervals fixed, detailed balance at $E_{\text{gap}}\to\infty$ requires $\Delta T$ to grow faster than any polynomial in $E_{\text{gap}}$, under mild technical conditions. These results also hold for a static detector in a Minkowski heat bath. The results limit the utility of the large $E_{\text{gap}}$ regime as a probe of thermality in time-dependent versions of the Hawking and Unruh effects, such as an observer falling into a radiating black hole. We study how quantum systems that propagate in the spacetime of a rotating planet are affected by the curved background. Spacetime curvature affects wavepackets of photons propagating from Earth to a satellite, and the changes in the wavepacket encode the parameters of the spacetime. This allows us to evaluate quantitatively how quantum communications are affected by the curved spacetime background of the Earth and to achieve precise measurements of Earth's Schwarzschild radius and equatorial angular velocity. We then provide a comparison with the state of the art in parameter estimation obtained through classical means. Thermal phenomena in quantum field theory can be detected with the aid of particle detectors coupled to quantum fields along stationary worldlines, by testing whether the response of such a detector satisfies the detailed balance version of the KMS condition at a constant temperature. This relation holds when the interaction between the field and the detector has infinite time duration. Operationally, however, detectors interact with fields for a finite amount of time, controlled by a switching function of compact support, and the KMS detailed balance condition cannot hold exactly for finite time interactions at arbitrarily large detector energy gap. In this large energy gap regime, we show that, for an adiabatically switched Rindler detector, the Unruh temperature emerges asymptotically after the detector and the field have interacted for a time that is polynomially long in the large energy. Many quantum theories of gravity propose Lorentz violating dispersion relations of the form $\omega = |k|\, f(|k|/M)$, with recovery of approximate Lorentz invariance at energy scales much below $M$. We show that a quantum field with this dispersion predicts drastic low energy Lorentz violation in atoms modelled as Unruh-DeWitt detectors, for any $f$ that dips below unity somewhere. We present and utilize a simple formalism for the smooth creation of boundary conditions within relativistic quantum field theory. We consider a massless scalar field in $(1+1)$-dimensional flat spacetime and imagine smoothly transitioning from there being no boundary condition to there being a two-sided Dirichlet mirror. The act of doing this, expectantly, generates a flux of real quanta that emanates from the mirror as it is being created. We show that the local stress-energy tensor of the flux is finite only if an infrared cutoff is introduced, no matter how slowly the mirror is created, in agreement with the perturbative results of Obadia and Parentani. In the limit of instantaneous mirror creation the total energy injected into the field becomes ultraviolet divergent, but the response of an Unruh-DeWitt particle detector passing through the infinite burst of energy nevertheless remains finite. We analyze how pre-existing entanglement between two Unruh-DeWitt particle detectors evolves when one of the detectors falls through a Rindler firewall in (1+1)-dimensional Minkowski space. The firewall effect is minor and does not wash out the detector-detector entanglement, in some regimes even preserving the entanglement better than Minkowski vacuum. The absence of cataclysmic events should continue to hold for young black hole firewalls. We study analytically the time-dependent boundary conditions of superconducting microwave circuit experiments in the high plasma frequency limit, in which the conditions are Robin-type and relate the value of the field to the spatial derivative of the field. We give an explicit solution to the field evolution for boundary condition modulations that are small in magnitude but may have arbitrary time dependence, in a formalism that applies both to a semiopen waveguide and to a closed waveguide with two independently adjustable boundaries. The correspondence between the microwave Robin boundary conditions and the mechanically-moving Dirichlet boundary conditions of the Dynamical Casimir Effect is shown to break down at high field frequencies, approximately one order of magnitude above the frequencies probed in the 2011 experiment of Wilson et al. Our results bound the parameter regime in which a microwave circuit can be used to model relativistic effects in a mechanically-moving cavity, and they show that beyond this parameter regime moving mirrors produce more particles and generate more entanglement than their non-moving microwave waveguide simulations., Comment: 29 pages, 2 figures. v3: minor updates, including a change in the title. We compute the renormalized vacuum polarization of a massive scalar field in the Hartle-Hawking state on (2+1)-dimensional rotating, spacelike stretched black hole solutions to Topologically Massive Gravity, surrounded by a Dirichlet mirror that makes the state well defined. The Feynman propagator is written as a mode sum on the complex Riemannian section of the spacetime, and a Hadamard renormalization procedure is implemented by matching to a mode sum on the complex Riemannian section of a rotating Minkowski spacetime. No analytic continuation in the angular momentum parameter is invoked. Selected numerical results are given, demonstrating the numerical efficacy of the method. We investigate a two-level Unruh-DeWitt detector coupled to a massless scalar field or its proper time derivative in $(1+1)$-dimensional Minkowski spacetime, in a quantum state whose correlation structure across the Rindler horizon mimics the stationary aspects of a firewall that Almheiri et al have argued to ensue in an evaporating black hole spacetime. Within first-order perturbation theory, we show that the detector's response on falling through the horizon is sudden but finite. The difference from the Minkowski vacuum response is proportional to $\omega^{-2}\ln(|\omega|)$ for the non-derivative detector and to $\ln(|\omega|)$ for the derivative-coupling detector, both in the limit of a large energy gap $\omega$ and in the limit of adiabatic switching. Adding to the quantum state high Rindler temperature excitations behind the horizon increases the detector's response proportionally to the temperature; this situation has been suggested to model the energetic curtain proposal of Braunstein et al. We present novel methods to numerically address the problem of characterizing the response of particle detectors in curved spacetimes. These methods allow for the integration of the Wightman function, at least in principle, in rather general backgrounds. In particular we will use this tool to further understand the nature of conformal massless scalar Hawking radiation from a Schwarzschild black hole in anti-de Sitter space. We do that by studying an Unruh-DeWitt detector at rest above the horizon and in circular geodesic orbit. The method allows us to see that the response rate shows peaks at certain characteristic frequencies, which correspond to the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of the space-time. It is in principle possible to apply these techniques to more complicated and interesting physical scenarios, e.g. geodesic infall or multiple detector entanglement evolution, or the study of the behaviour of quantum correlations in spacetimes with black hole horizons., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures. We study an Unruh-DeWitt particle detector that is coupled to the proper time derivative of a real scalar field in 1+1 spacetime dimensions. Working within first-order perturbation theory, we cast the transition probability into a regulator-free form, and we show that the transition rate remains well defined in the limit of sharp switching. The detector is insensitive to the infrared ambiguity when the field becomes massless, and we verify explicitly the regularity of the massless limit for a static detector in Minkowski half-space. We then consider a massless field for two scenarios of interest for the Hawking-Unruh effect: an inertial detector in Minkowski spacetime with an exponentially receding mirror, and an inertial detector in $(1+1)$-dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime, in the Hartle-Hawking-Israel and Unruh vacua. In the mirror spacetime the transition rate traces the onset of an energy flux from the mirror, with the expected Planckian late time asymptotics. We study the impact of the zero-mode of a quantum field on the evolution of a particle detector. For a massless scalar field in a periodic cavity, we show that the impact of the zero mode on the Unruh-DeWitt detector and its derivative-coupling generalisation is necessarily nonvanishing but can be made negligible in some limits, including those commonly occurring in non-relativistic quantum optics. For the derivative-coupling detector this can be accomplished by just tuning the zero mode's initial state, but the standard Unruh-DeWitt detector requires a more subtle and careful tuning. We study a nonrelativistic quantum mechanical particle on an interval of finite length with a Hamiltonian that has a $p^3$ correction term, modelling potential low energy quantum gravity effects. We describe explicitly the $U(3)$ family of the self-adjoint extensions of the Hamiltonian and discuss several subfamilies of interest. As the main result, we find a family of self-adjoint Hamiltonians, indexed by four continuous parameters and one binary parameter, whose spectrum and eigenfunctions are perturbatively close to those of the uncorrected particle with Dirichlet boundary conditions, even though the Dirichlet condition as such is not in the $U(3)$ family.
