The biggest challenge of exploring the catalytic properties of under-coordinated nanoclusters is the issue of stability. We demonstrate herein that chemical dopants on sulfur-doped graphene (S-G) can be utilized to stabilize ultrafine (sub-2 nm) Au25(PET)18 clusters to enable stable nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) without significant structural degradation. The Au25@S-G exhibits an ammonia yield rate of 27.5μgNH3⋅mgAu−1⋅h−1 at −0.5 V with faradic efficiency of 2.3%. More importantly, the anchored clusters preserve ∼ 80% NRR activity after four days of continuous operation, a significant improvement over the 15% remaining ammonia production rate for clusters loaded on undoped graphene tested under the same conditions. Isotope labeling experiments confirmed the ammonia was a direct reaction product of N2 feeding gas instead of other chemical contaminations. Ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy of post-reaction catalysts reveal that the sulfur dopant plays a critical role in stabilizing the chemical state and coordination environment of Au atoms in clusters. Further ReaxFF molecular dynamics (RMD) simulation confirmed the strong interaction between Au nanoclusters (NCs) and S-G. This substrate-anchoring process could serve as an effective strategy to study ultrafine nanoclusters’ electrocatalytic behavior while minimizing the destruction of the under-coordinated surface motif under harsh electrochemical reaction conditions. The high-temperature (high-T) phase of cesium lead iodide (CsPbI3) presents great promise for photovoltaic applications; however, exposure to ambient moisture at room temperature transforms it into its less-desirable low-temperature (low-T) phase with a larger band gap. While there have been theoretical predictions on the influence of moisture level on the phase transformation kinetics, the corresponding quantitative experimental evidence has remained limited. Tracking CsPbI3 phase transformation under controlled relative humidity (RH), we find that rising RH increases the nucleation rate of low-T CsPbI3 exponentially, but has a weak effect on its growth. The overall transformation is nucleation limited, with higher RH leading to a lower nucleation barrier. Finally, we find that heating between 40°C and 80°C facilitates water desorption and suppresses phase transformation. Our findings elucidate the relationship between moisture and the phase energetics of CsPbI3, which can serve as references for thin film applications of CsPbI3 and future designs of stable photovoltaics systems.

Enzymes feature the concerted operation of multiple components around an active site, leading to exquisite catalytic specificity. Realizing such configurations on synthetic catalyst surfaces remains elusive. Here, we report a nanoparticle/ordered-ligand interlayer that contains a multi-component catalytic pocket for high-specificity CO2 electrocatalysis. The nanoparticle/ordered-ligand interlayer comprises a metal nanoparticle surface and a detached layer of ligands in its vicinity. This interlayer possesses unique pseudocapacitive characteristics where desolvated cations are intercalated, creating an active-site configuration that enhances catalytic turnover by two orders and one order of magnitude against a pristine metal surface and nanoparticle with tethered ligands, respectively. The nanoparticle/ordered-ligand interlayer is demonstrated across several metals with up to 99% CO selectivity at marginal overpotentials and onset overpotentials of as low as 27 mV, in aqueous conditions. Furthermore, in a gas-diffusion environment with neutral media, the nanoparticle/ordered-ligand interlayer achieves nearly unit CO selectivity at high current densities (98.1% at 400 mA cm−2).

Tandem electrocatalysis decouples individual steps within a chemically complicated pathway via multicomponent catalyst design. Such a concept is attractive for CO2 electro-conversion to multicarbons (C2+), especially at high rates. Here, we show that a Cu-Ag tandem catalyst on a gas diffusion electrode (GDE) can enhance the C2+ production rate from CO2 through CO2 reduction to CO on Ag and subsequent carbon coupling on Cu. With added Ag, the C2+ partial current over a Cu surface increases from 37 to 160 mA/cm2 at −0.70 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in 1 M KOH with no mutual interference between the two metals. Moreover, the intrinsic C2H4 and C2H5OH activity in the tandem platform is significantly higher than Cu alone under either pure CO2 or CO atmosphere. Our results indicate that the CO-enriched local environment generated by Ag can enhance C2+ formation on Cu beyond CO2 or CO feeding, suggesting new mechanisms in a tandem three-phase environment.

Abstract Background Shorter telomere length (TL) may indicate premature cellular aging and increased risk for disease. While there is substantial evidence for shorter TL in individuals suffering from psychiatric disorders, data is scarce on maladaptive personality traits related to coronary artery disease (CAD). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association of TL with hostility and defensiveness in individuals with CAD or other non-cardiovascular illnesses and whether associations were moderated by CAD status and sex. Methods One thousand thirty-six individuals (M age = 65.40 ± 6.73 years) with and without CAD completed the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale and the Cook–Medley Hostility Scale. Relative TL was measured via quantitative polymerase chain reaction of total genomic DNA samples. Analyses involved hierarchical regressions on TL, performed separately for hostility and defensiveness, controlling for pertinent sociodemographic, behavioural, and medical risk factors. Separate analyses were performed on 25 healthy participants. Results A hostility by sex interaction emerged (β = − .08, p = .006) in the patient groups, where greater hostility was associated with shorter TL in women only (p < .01). A Defensiveness by CAD status interaction (β = − .06, p = .049) revealed longer TL in more defensive CAD patients only (p = .06). In healthy men, shorter TL was observed in those with greater defensiveness (β = .52, p = .006) but lower hostility (β = − .43, p = .049). Conclusion Hostility and defensiveness are differentially associated with TL as a function of sex and health status. The implication of these results for health remains to be determined, but propose an additional pathway through which the effect of maladaptive personality traits may contribute to CV and other disease.

Background: Platelet hyperactivity is deleterious in coronary artery disease (CAD), requiring lifelong antiplatelet therapy, and is associated with worse cognitive outcomes. Upon activation, platelets release Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), a neurotrophin protective against cognitive decline. Given these apparently opposing effects of platelet activation on cognitive health, we investigated whether BDNF levels intercede in the relationship between platelet activation and cognitive function; and whether this relationship is moderated by the presence of CAD.Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 1,280 participants with (n = 673) and without CAD (n = 607) completed the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Plasma BDNF and soluble P-selectin (a marker of platelet activity) levels were assessed using multiplex flow cytometry.Results: In a mediation model, platelet activity was correlated with higher plasma BDNF concentrations (b = 0.53, p < 0.0001). The kinetics of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media, a reaction central to alkaline water electrolyzers, is not accurately captured by traditional adsorption-based activity descriptors. As a result, the exact mechanism and the main driving force for the water reduction or HER rate remain hotly debated. Here, we perform extensive kinetic measurements on the pH- and cation-dependent HER rate on Pt single-crystal electrodes in alkaline conditions. We find that cations interacting with Pt step sites control the HER activity, while they interact only weakly with Pt(111) and Pt(100) terraces and, therefore, cations do not affect HER kinetics on terrace sites. This is reflected by divergent activity trends as a function of pH as well as cation concentration on stepped Pt surfaces vs Pt surfaces that do not feature steps, such as Pt(111). We show that HER activity can be optimized by rationally tuning these step-cation interactions via selective adatom deposition at the steps and by choosing an optimal electrolyte composition. Our work shows that the catalyst and the electrolyte must be tailored in conjunction to achieve the highest possible HER activity.

Carbon dioxide electroreduction facilitates the sustainable synthesis of fuels and chemicals 1 . Although Cu enables CO 2 -to-multicarbon product (C 2+ ) conversion, the nature of the active sites under operating conditions remains elusive 2 . Importantly, identifying active sites of high-performance Cu nanocatalysts necessitates nanoscale, time-resolved operando techniques 3-5 . Here, we present a comprehensive investigation of the structural dynamics during the life cycle of Cu nanocatalysts. A 7 nm Cu nanoparticle ensemble evolves into metallic Cu nanograins during electrolysis before complete oxidation to single-crystal Cu 2 O nanocubes following post-electrolysis air exposure. Operando analytical and four-dimensional electrochemical liquid-cell scanning transmission electron microscopy shows the presence of metallic Cu nanograins under CO 2 reduction conditions. Correlated high-energy-resolution time-resolved X-ray spectroscopy suggests that metallic Cu, rich in nanograin boundaries, supports undercoordinated active sites for C-C coupling. Quantitative structure-activity correlation shows that a higher fraction of metallic Cu nanograins leads to higher C 2+ selectivity. A 7 nm Cu nanoparticle ensemble, with a unity fraction of active Cu nanograins, exhibits sixfold higher C 2+ selectivity than the 18 nm counterpart with one-third of active Cu nanograins. The correlation of multimodal operando techniques serves as a powerful platform to advance our fundamental understanding of the complex structural evolution of nanocatalysts under electrochemical conditions., (© 2023. Understanding the chemical environment and interparticle dynamics of nanoparticle electrocatalysts under operating conditions offers valuable insights into tuning their activity and selectivity. This is particularly important to the design of Cu nanocatalysts for CO 2 electroreduction due to their dynamic nature under bias. Here, we have developed operando electrochemical resonant soft X-ray scattering (EC-RSoXS) to probe the chemical identity of active sites during the dynamic structural transformation of Cu nanoparticle (NP) ensembles through 1 μm thick electrolyte. Operando scattering-enhanced X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) serves as a powerful technique to investigate the size-dependent catalyst stability under beam exposure while monitoring the potential-dependent surface structural changes. Small NPs (7 nm) in aqueous electrolyte were found to experience a predominant soft X-ray beam-induced oxidation to CuO despite only sub-second X-ray exposure. In comparison, large NPs (18 nm) showed improved resistivity to beam damage, which allowed the reliable observation of surface Cu 2 O electroreduction to metallic Cu. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) statistically probes the particle-particle interactions of large ensembles of NPs. This study points out the need for rigorous examination of beam effects for operando X-ray studies on electrocatalysts. The strategy of using EC-RSoXS that combines soft XAS and SAXS can serve as a general approach to simultaneously investigate the chemical environment and interparticle information on nanocatalysts.

The development of photoelectrochemical systems for converting CO 2 into chemical feedstocks offers an attractive strategy for clean energy storage by directly utilizing solar energy, but selectivity and stability for these systems have thus been limited. Here, we interface silicon nanowire (SiNW) photocathodes with a copper nanoparticle (CuNP) ensemble to drive efficient photoelectrochemical CO 2 conversion to multicarbon products. This integrated system enables CO 2 -to-C 2 H 4 conversion with faradaic efficiency approaching 25% and partial current densities above 2.5 mA/cm 2 at -0.50 V vs RHE, while the nanowire photocathodes deliver 350 mV of photovoltage under 1 sun illumination. Under 50 h of continual bias and illumination, CuNP/SiNW can sustain stable photoelectrochemical CO 2 reduction. These results demonstrate the nanowire/catalyst system as a powerful modular platform to achieve stable photoelectrochemical CO 2 reduction and the feasibility to facilitate complex reactions toward multicarbons using generated photocarriers.

SignificanceThe electroconversion of CO 2 to value-added products is a promising path to sustainable fuels and chemicals. However, the microenvironment that is created during CO 2 electroreduction near the surface of heterogeneous Cu electrocatalysts remains unknown. Its understanding can lead to the development of ways to improve activity and selectivity toward multicarbon products. This work introduces a method called on-stream substitution of reactant isotope that provides quantitative information of the CO intermediate species present on Cu surfaces during electrolysis. An intermediary CO reservoir that contains more CO molecules than typically expected in a surface adsorbed configuration was identified. Its size was shown to be a factor closely associated with the formation of multicarbon products.

In the pursuit of a decarbonized society, electrocatalytic CO 2 conversion has drawn tremendous research interest in recent years as a promising route to recycling CO 2 into more valuable chemicals. To achieve high catalytic activity and selectivity, nanocatalysts of diverse structures and compositions have been designed. However, the dynamic structural transformation of the nanocatalysts taking place under operating conditions makes it difficult to study active site configurations present during the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). In addition, although recognized as consequential to the catalytic performance, the reaction microenvironment generated near the nanocatalyst surface during CO 2 RR and its impact are still an understudied research area. In this Perspective, we discuss current understandings and difficulties associated with investigating such dynamic aspects of both the surface reaction site and its surrounding reaction environment as a whole. We further highlight the interactive influence of the structural transformation and the microenvironment on the catalytic performance of nanocatalysts. The microenvironment in which the catalysts are situated is as important as the active sites in determining the overall catalytic performance. Recently, it has been found that nanoparticle (NP) surface ligands can actively participate in creating a favorable catalytic microenvironment, as part of the nanoparticle/ordered-ligand interlayer (NOLI), for selective CO 2 conversion. However, much of the ligand-ligand interactions presumed essential to the formation of such a catalytic interlayer remains to be understood. Here, by varying the initial size of NPs and utilizing spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques, we show that the assembly of NPs leads to the necessary ligand interactions for the NOLI formation. The large surface curvature of small NPs promotes strong noncovalent interactions between ligands of adjacent NPs through ligand interdigitation. This ensures their collective behavior in electrochemical conditions and gives rise to the structurally ordered ligand layer of the NOLI. Thus, the use of smaller NPs was shown to result in a greater catalytically effective NOLI area associated with desolvated cations and electrostatic stabilization of intermediates, leading to the enhancement of intrinsic CO 2 -to-CO turnover. Our findings highlight the potential use of tailored microenvironments for NP catalysis by controlling its surface ligand interactions.

Traditional covalent semiconductors require complex processing methods for device fabrication due to their high cohesive energies. Here, we develop a stable, ligand-free perovskite semiconductor ink that can be used to make patterned semiconductor-based optoelectronics in one step. The perovskite ink is formed via the dissolution of crystals of vacancy-ordered double perovskite Cs 2 TeX 6 (X = Cl - , Br - , I - ) in polar aprotic solvents, leading to the stabilization of isolated [TeX 6 ] 2- octahedral anions and free Cs + cations without the presence of ligands. The stabilization of the fundamental perovskite ionic octahedral building blocks in solution creates multifunctional inks with the ability to reversibly transform between the liquid ink and the solid-state perovskite crystalline system in air within minutes. These easily processable inks can be patterned onto various materials via dropcasting, spraying or painting, and stamping, highlighting the crucial role of solvated octahedral complexes toward the rapid formation of phase-pure perovskite structures in ambient conditions.

Undercoordinated metal nanoclusters have shown great promise for various catalytic applications. However, their activity is often limited by the covalently bonded ligands, which could block the active surface sites. Here, we investigate the ligand removal process for Au 25 nanoclusters using both thermal and electrochemical treatments, as well as its impact on the electroreduction of CO 2 to CO. The Au 25 nanoclusters are synthesized with 2-phenylethanethiol as the capping agent and anchored on sulfur-doped graphene. The thiolate ligands can be readily removed under either thermal annealing at ≥180°C or electrochemical biasing at ≤-0.5 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode, as evidenced by the Cu underpotential deposition surface area measurement, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. However, these ligand-removing treatments also trigger the structural evolution of Au 25 nanoclusters concomitantly. The thermally and electrochemically treated Au 25 nanoclusters show enhanced activity and selectivity for the electrochemical CO 2 -to-CO conversion than their pristine counterpart, which is attributed to the exposure of undercoordinated Au sites on the surface after ligand removal. This work provides facile strategies to strip away the staple ligands from metal nanoclusters and highlights its importance in promoting the catalytic performances.

The metal halide ionic octahedron, [MX 6 ] (M = metal cation, X = halide anion), is considered to be the fundamental building block and functional unit of metal halide perovskites. By representing the metal halide ionic octahedron in halide perovskites as a super ion/atom, the halide perovskite can be described as an extended ionic octahedron network (ION) charge balanced by selected cations. This new perspective of halide perovskites based on ION enables the prediction of different packing and connectivity of the metal halide octahedra based on different solid-state lattices. In this work, a new halide perovskite Cs 8 Au 3.5 In 1.5 Cl 23 was discovered on the basis of a BaTiO 3 -lattice ION {[InCl 6 ][AuCl 5 ][Au/InCl 4 ] 3 } 8- , which is assembled from three different ionic octahedra [InCl 6 ], [AuCl 6 ], and [Au/InCl 6 ] and balanced by positively charged Cs cations. The success of this ION design concept in the discovery of Cs 8 Au 3.5 In 1.5 Cl 23 opens up a new venue for the rational design of new halide perovskite materials.

Carrier recombination is a crucial process governing the optical properties of a semiconductor. Although various theoretical approaches have been utilized to describe carrier behaviors, a quantitative understanding of the impact of defects and interfaces in low dimensional semiconductor systems is still elusive. Here, we develop a model system consisting of chemically tunable, highly luminescent halide perovskite nanocrystals to illustrate the role of carrier diffusion and material dimensionality on the carrier recombination kinetics and luminescence efficiency. Our advanced synthetic methods provide a well-controlled colloidal system consisting of nanocrystals with different aspect ratios, halide compositions, and surface conditions. Using this system, we reveal the scaling laws of photoluminescence quantum yield and radiative lifetime with respect to the aspect ratio of nanocrystals. The scaling laws derived herein are not only a phenomenological observation but proved a powerful tool disentangling the carrier dynamics of microscopic systems in a quantitative and interpretable manner. The investigation of our model system and theoretical formulation bring to light the dimensionality, as a hidden constraint on carrier dynamics, and identify the diffusion length as an important parameter that distinguishes nanoscale and macroscale carrier behaviors. The conceptual distinction in carrier dynamics in different dimensionality regimes informs new design rules for optical devices where complex microstructures are involved.

Promotion of C-C bonds is one of the key fundamental questions in the field of CO 2 electroreduction. Much progress has occurred in developing bulk-derived Cu-based electrodes for CO 2 -to-multicarbons (CO 2 -to-C 2+ ), especially in the widely studied class of high-surface-area "oxide-derived" copper. However, fundamental understanding into the structural characteristics responsible for efficient C-C formation is restricted by the intrinsic activity of these catalysts often being comparable to polycrystalline copper foil. By closely probing a Cu nanoparticle (NP) ensemble catalyst active for CO 2 -to-C 2+ , we show that bias-induced rapid fusion or "electrochemical scrambling" of Cu NPs creates disordered structures intrinsically active for low overpotential C 2+ formation, exhibiting around sevenfold enhancement in C 2+ turnover over crystalline Cu. Integrating ex situ, passivated ex situ, and in situ analyses reveals that the scrambled state exhibits several structural signatures: a distinct transition to single-crystal Cu 2 O cubes upon air exposure, low crystallinity upon passivation, and high mobility under bias. These findings suggest that disordered copper structures facilitate C-C bond formation from CO 2 and that electrochemical nanocrystal scrambling is an avenue toward creating such catalysts., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interest.

Sulfur- (S-CNT) and nitrogen-doped (N-CNT) carbon nanotubes have been produced by catalytic chemical vapor deposition (c-CVD) and were subject to an annealing treatment. These CNTs were used as supports for small (≈2 nm) Pt 3 M (M = Co or Ni) alloyed nanoparticles that have a very homogeneous size distribution (in spite of the high metal loading of ≈40 wt % Pt), using an ionic liquid as a stabilizer. The electrochemical surface area, the activity for the oxygen reduction reaction and the amount of H 2 O 2 generated during the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) have been evaluated in a rotating ring disk electrode experiment. The Pt 3 M/N-CNT catalysts revealed excellent electrochemical properties compared to a commercial Pt 3 Co/Vulcan XC-72 catalyst. The nature of the carbon support plays a key role in determining the properties of the metal nanoparticles, on the preparation of the catalytic layer, and on the electrocatalytic performance in the ORR. On N-CNT supports, the specific activity followed the expected order Pt 3 Co > Pt 3 Ni, whereas on the annealed N-CNT support, the order was reversed.

Protein and DNA alkylation by endogenously produced electrophiles is associated with the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases, to epigenetic alterations and to cell signaling and redox regulation. With the goal of visualizing, in real-time, the spatiotemporal response of the cell milieu to electrophiles, we have designed a fluorogenic BODIPY-acrolein probe, AcroB, that undergoes a >350-fold fluorescence intensity enhancement concomitant with protein adduct formation. AcroB enables a direct quantification of single post-translational modifications occurring on cellular proteins via recording fluorescence bursts in live-cell imaging studies. In combination with super-resolution imaging, protein alkylation events may be registered and individually counted, yielding a map of protein-electrophile reactions within the cell lipid milieu. Alkylation is predominantly observed within mitochondria, a source, yet not a sink, of AcroB adducts, illustrating that a mitochondrial constitutive excretion mechanism ensures rapid disposal of compromised proteins. Sorting within the Golgi apparatus and trafficking along microtubules and through the cell endo- and exocytic pathways can be next visualized via live-cell imaging. Our results offer a direct visualization of cellular response to a noncanonical acrolein warhead. We envision AcroB will enable new approaches for diagnosis of pathologies associated with defective cellular trafficking. AcroB may help elucidate key aspects of mitochondria electrophile adduct excretion and cell endocytic and exocytic pathways. Conceptually, AcroB provides a new paradigm on fluorescence microscopy studies where chemical perturbation is achieved and simultaneously reported by the probe.

We report the feasibility, indications, and usefulness of an arthroscopic approach to the posterior knee compartments. We developed an arthroscopic approach to the posterior knee compartment involving use of a posteromedial portal and a posterolateral portal opposite each other. Each posterior portal is used in alternation for the arthroscope and instruments. The posterior portals are established using an original "back and forth" technique. The feasibility of the technique was evaluated on a cadaver. It allowed us to define safety rules to protect the vessels and nerves that course through the popliteal fossa. The approach provided a broader field of view compared with classical techniques. After removal of the septum dividing the posterior compartment, the synovial fold enclosing the posterior cruciate ligament and lining the upper and posterior parts of the posterior capsule was readily accessed, suggesting that this approach may be particularly valuable for total synovectomy. This was confirmed in 6 patients with villonodular synovitis, in whom the new approach was used in combination with arthroscopic anterior synovectomy. This technique allows removal of parts of the synovium that are difficult to access through conventional arthroscopic approaches. For total synovectomy, it can be used as an alternative to open posterior synovectomy, in combination with arthroscopic anterior synovectomy.

The aim of this study was to determine whether assessment of back surgery with disability scores is relevant. We also attempted to answer the question of whether this evaluation should be conducted by a surgeon or a medical doctor. This retrospective study analyzes the long-term outcome (average follow-up 7 years, range: 3-12) of 40 patients (mean age: 46.2 years) treated by posterior surgical decompression, posterolateral arthrodesis, with or without instrumentation, for symptomatic low-grade spondylolisthesis. All patients were interviewed postoperatively and examined the same day by an orthopedic surgeon, who was not involved in the patients' treatment, as well as by a medical doctor rehabilitation specialist. Impairment was assessed by a standardized clinical examination and by visual analog scales (VAS) of pain. Disability was assessed using two scales: the Quebec disability scale and the Beaujon scale. Anxiety and depression were assessed with a validated specific questionnaire (HAD). Patient's perceived handicap was assessed on a 100-mm VAS. Our results show that the scores of the two disability scales were highly correlated with the patient's overall satisfaction ( r = 0.73 and 0.77 for the Quebec scale and the Beaujon scale, respectively). The intraclass correlation coefficient showed very good or excellent correlation between the data collected by the surgeon and the rehabilitation specialist, ranging from 0.8 to 0.97. This finding clearly demonstrates that interview by a surgeon who is not involved in the patient's treatment does not influence the patient's assessment in terms of impairment, disability, or handicap. Moreover, our results suggest that disability scales are the most relevant outcome measures in the assessment of spine surgery.
