Abstract

Marine shells are designed by nature to ensure mechanical protection from predators and shelter for mollusks living inside them. A large amount of work has been done to study the multiscale mechanical properties of their complex microstructure and to draw inspiration for the design of impact-resistant biomimetic materials. Less is known regarding the dynamic behavior related to their structure at multiple scales. Here, we present a combined experimental and numerical study of the shells of two different species of gastropod sea snail belonging to the Turritellidae family, featuring a peculiar helicoconic shape with hierarchical spiral elements. The proposed procedure involves the use of micro-Computed Tomography scans for the accurate determination of geometry, Atomic Force Microscopy and Nanoindentation to evaluate local mechanical properties, surface morphology and heterogeneity, as well as Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy coupled with Finite Element Analysis simulations to determine global modal behavior. Results indicate that the specific features of the considered shells, in particular their helicoconic and hierarchical structure, can also be linked to their vibration attenuation behavior. Abstract

Nature has engineered complex designs to achieve advanced properties and functionalities through evolution, over millions of years. Many organisms have adapted to their living environment producing extremely efficient materials and structures exhibiting optimized mechanical, thermal, optical properties, which current technology is often unable to reproduce. These properties are often achieved using hierarchical structures spanning macro, meso, micro and nanoscales, widely observed in many natural materials like wood, bone, spider silk and sponges. Thus far, bioinspired approaches have been successful in identifying optimized structures in terms of quasi-static mechanical properties, such as strength, toughness, adhesion, but comparatively little work has been done as far as dynamic ones are concerned (e.g. vibration damping, noise insulation, sound amplification, etc.). In particular, relatively limited knowledge currently exists on how hierarchical structure can play a role in the optimization of natural structures, although concurrent length scales no doubt allow to address multiple frequency ranges. Here, we review the main work that has been done in the field of structural optimization for dynamic mechanical properties, highlighting some common traits and strategies in different biological systems. We also discuss the relevance to bioinspired materials, in particular in the field of phononic crystals and metamaterials, and the potential of exploiting natural designs for technological applications.

Abstract

In this work, we demonstrate in a proof of concept experiment the efficient noise absorption of a 3-D printed panel designed with appropriately arranged space-coiled labyrinthine acoustic elementary cells. The labyrinthine units are numerically simulated to determine their dispersion characteristics and then experimentally tested in a Kundt Tube to verify the dependence of absorption characteristics on cell thickness and lateral size. The resonance frequency is found to scale linearly with respect to both thickness and lateral size in the considered range, enabling tunability of the working frequency. Using these data, a flat panel is designed and fabricated by arranging cells of different dimensions in a quasi-periodic lattice, exploiting the acoustic "rainbow" effect, i.e. superimposing the frequency response of the different cells to generate a wider absorption spectrum, covering the required frequency range between 800 and 1200 Hz. The panel is thinner and more lightweight compared to other sound absorption solutions, and designed in modular form so as to be applicable to different geometries. The performance of the panel is experimentally validated in a small-scale reverberation room, and close to ideal absorption is demonstrated at the desired frequency of operation. Thus, this work suggests a design procedure for noise-mitigation panel solutions and provides experimental proof of the versatility and effectiveness of labyrinthine metamaterials for low-frequency sound attenuation.

19. Building-Level Wastewater Monitoring for COVID-19 Using Tampon Swabs and RT-LAMP for Rapid SARS-Cov-2 RNA Detection

Abstract

Community-level wastewater monitoring for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) RNA has demonstrated useful correlation with both coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) case numbers and clinical testing positivity. Wastewater monitoring on college campuses has demonstrated promising predictive capacity for the presence and absence of COVID-19 cases. However, to date, such monitoring has largely relied upon composite or grab samples and reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) techniques, which limits the accessibility and scalability of wastewater monitoring. In this study, we piloted a workflow that uses tampons as passive swabs for collection and reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) to detect SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater. Results for the developed workflow were available same day, with a time to result following tampon swab collection of approximately three hours. The RT-LAMP 95% limit of detection (76 gene copies reaction-1) was greater than RT-droplet digital PCR (ddPCR; 3.3 gene copies reaction-1). Nonetheless, during a building-level wastewater monitoring campaign conducted in the midst of weekly clinical testing of all students, the workflow demonstrated a same-day positive predictive value (PPV) of 33% and negative predictive value (NPV) of 80% for incident COVID-19 cases. The NPV is comparable to that reported by wastewater monitoring using RT-qPCR. These observations suggest that even with lower analytical sensitivity the tampon swab and RT-LAMP workflow offers a cost-effective and rapid approach that could be leveraged for scalable same-day building-level wastewater monitoring for COVID-19.

Abstract

Nationally determined contributions (NDCs) serve to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement of staying "well below 2°C", which could also yield substantial health co-benefits in the process. However, existing NDC commitments are inadequate to achieve this goal. Placing health as a key focus of the NDCs could present an opportunity to increase ambition and realise health co-benefits. We modelled scenarios to analyse the health co-benefits of NDCs for the year 2040 for nine representative countries (ie, Brazil, China, Germany, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, South Africa, the UK, and the USA) that were selected for their contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions and their global or regional influence.

The Lancet Countdown is an international collaboration established to provide an independent, global monitoring system dedicated to tracking the emerging health profile of the changing climate. The 2020 report presents 43 indicators across five sections: climate change impacts, exposures, and vulnerabilities; adaptation, planning, and resilience for health; mitigation actions and health co-benefits; economics and finance; and public and political engagement. This report represents the findings and consensus of the 35 leading academic institutions and UN agencies that make up The Lancet Countdown, and draws on the expertise of climate scientists, geographers, engineers, experts in energy, food, and transport, economists, social, and political scientists, data scientists, public health professionals, and doctors.

Abstract

The Lancet Countdown is an international, multidisciplinary collaboration, dedicated to monitoring the evolving health profile of climate change, and providing an independent assessment of the delivery of commitments made by governments worldwide under the Paris Agreement. The 2019 report presents an annual update of 41 indicators across five key domains: climate change impacts, exposures, and vulnerability; adaptation, planning, and resilience for health; mitigation actions and health co-benefits; economics and finance; and public and political engagement. The report represents the findings and consensus of 35 leading academic institutions and UN agencies from every continent. Each year, the methods and data that underpin the Lancet Countdown’s indicators are further developed and improved, with updates described at each stage of this report. The collaboration draws on the world-class expertise of climate scientists; ecologists; mathematicians; engineers; energy, food, and transport experts; economists; social and political scientists; public health professionals; and doctors, to generate the quality and diversity of data required.

Abstract

We measured brachial and femoral artery flow velocity in eight subjects and peroneal and median muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) in five subjects during tilt testing to 40 degrees. Tilt caused similar increases in MSNA in the peroneal and median nerves. Tilt caused a fall in femoral artery flow velocity, whereas no changes in flow velocity were seen in the brachial artery. Moreover, with tilt, the increase in the vascular resistance employed (blood pressure/flow velocity) was greater and more sustained in the leg than in the arm. The ratio of the percent increase in vascular resistance in leg to arm was 2.5:1. We suggest that the greater vascular resistance effects in the leg were due to an interaction between sympathetic nerve activity and the myogenic response.

Abstract

The Lancet Countdown: tracking progress on health and climate change was established to provide an independent, global monitoring system dedicated to tracking the health dimensions of the impacts of, and the response to, climate change. The Lancet Countdown tracks 41 indicators across five domains: climate change impacts, exposures, and vulnerability; adaptation, planning, and resilience for health; mitigation actions and health co-benefits; finance and economics; and public and political engagement.

Abstract

International audience; The nonlinear acoustic applied to non-destructive evaluations is a new tool for assessing the properties ofconcrete with a high sensitivity. Today, the evaluation of concrete properties as a function of the depth is oftendifficult. In this paper we propose a new approach using Rayleigh waves for the evaluation of nonlinearproperties of the concrete cover. It was developed in the lab and requires an experimental approach based on thecontribution of numerical modelling. Two methods based on Dynamic Acousto-Elasticity Testing (DAET)which has pump-probe principle are proposed. The application to the case of the evaluation of the carbonationdepth in concrete is presented. The first configuration shows high sensitivity in comparison with velocitymeasurement. The second approach is proposed for on-site measurements and shows high potential to beimplemented to the field.
