Numerous aqueous systems host elements in multiple redox states, with wide ranging implications such as their influence on the formation/dissolution of minerals, water toxicity, and nutrient cycling. To uncover governing mechanisms and complex chemical interactions in aqueous systems, reactive-transport models have increasingly gained importance. However, their predictive capabilities remain limited because existing approaches struggle to accurately account for the full complexities of redox reactions. Here, we develop a reactive-transport framework that leverages recent advancements in thermodynamic modelling, speciation chemistry, and redox kinetics. Distinct from traditional models, we uniquely treat redox kinetics along with transport as transient phenomena, decoupled from Gibbs free energy minimisation. Ensuring ion concentrations are governed by non-equilibrium rate laws, this approach allows predicting the tempo-spatial distribution of speciation and precipitation of species across oxidation states. We illustrate the versatility of our framework through two case studies: manganese speciation in natural waters and the fate of dissolved iron in aqueous/porous media. Our framework significantly enhances the modelling of a diverse range of redox-sensitive environments.

Accurate model predictions of corrosion-driven damage in reinforced concrete structures necessitate a comprehensive understanding of the rate of corrosion product formation. Here, we investigate the influence of dissolved Si characteristic of cementitious systems on the rate of corrosion product transformation at alkaline pH. Compared to systems aged in the absence of Si, small amounts of Si retard the formation rate of the thermodynamically stable corrosion product goethite by a factor of 10. The estimated first order rate constant of transformation k decreases exponentially as a function of the dissolved Si concentration and follows the progression log10k = log10k_0 - 14.65[Si]^0.28. Findings further suggest that the observed retardation is primarily due to the formation of a mobile aqueous Fe-Si complex. The concentration of Si in cementitious systems has a crucial influence, and additional research is required to fully incorporate this factor into reactive transport models, ultimately essential for accurate service life predictions.

The formation of energetically favourable and metastable mineral phases within the Fe-H2O system controls the long-term mobility of iron complexes as well as other aqueous phase constituents in natural aquifers, soils and other environmentally and industrially relevant systems. The fundamental mechanism controlling the formation of these solid phases has remained enigmatic. Here, we develop a general state-of-the-art partial equilibrium model and succeed in predicting the rate of amorphous 2-line ferrihydrite precipitation, dissolution and overall transformation to crystalline goethite at alkaline pH. All mechanistic steps constituting the transformation mechanism accurately predict the experimentally measured solid and aqueous phase composition over time, involving only a single kinetic rate constant each. It is found that the precipitation of goethite (i) occurs from solution and (ii) is limited by the comparatively slow dissolution of the first forming amorphous phase 2-line ferrihydrite. A generalised transformation mechanism applicable to near-neutral and mildly acidic pH further illustrates that differences in the kinetics of Fe(III) precipitation are controlled by the coordination environment of the predominant Fe(III) hydrolysis product. Findings provide a framework for the modelling of other iron(bearing) phases across a broad range of aqueous phase compositions.

Wet chemistry C-S-H precipitation experiments were performed under controlled conditions of solution supersaturation in the presence and absence of gluconate and three hexitol molecules. Characterization of the precipitates with SAXS and cryo-TEM experiments confirmed the presence of a multi-step nucleation pathway. Induction times for the formation of the amorphous C-S-H spheroids were determined from light transmittance. Analysis of those data with the classical nucleation theory revealed a significant increase of the kinetic prefactor in the same order as the complexation constants of calcium and silicate with each of the organics. Finally, two distinct precipitation regimes of the C-S-H amorphous precursor were identified: i) a nucleation regime at low saturation indexes (SI) and ii) a spinodal nucleation regime at high SI where the free energy barrier to the phase transition is found to be of the order of the kinetic energy or less., Comment: Accepted in Cement and Concrete Research. 30 pages plus supplementary materials. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2111.02743

The transformation of 2-line ferrihydrite to goethite from supersaturated solutions at alkaline pH >= 13.0 was studied using a combination of benchtop and advanced synchrotron techniques such as X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. In comparison to the transformation rates at acidic to mildly alkaline environments, the half-life,t_1/2, of 2-line ferrihydrite reduces from several months at pH = 2.0, and approximately 15 days at pH = 10.0, to just under 5 hours at pH = 14.0. Calculated first order rate constants of transformation, k, increase exponentially with respect to the pH and follow the progression log_10 k = log_10 k_0 + a*pH^E3. Simultaneous monitoring of the aqueous Fe(III) concentration via inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy demonstrates that (i) goethite likely precipitates from solution and (ii) its formation is rate-limited by the comparatively slow re-dissolution of 2-line ferrihydrite. The analysis presented can be used to estimate the transformation rate of naturally occurring 2-line ferrihydrite in aqueous electrolytes characteristic to mine and radioactive waste tailings as well as the formation of corrosion products in cementitious pore solutions.

This study investigates the effect of gluconate, a carboxylate ion, and three uncharged hexitols, D-sorbitol, D-mannitol and D-galactitol on the solubility of C-S-H. Thermodynamic modeling was used to determine the kind and amount of Ca-organic-silicate-OH complexes that potentially form in the conditions studied. All the organics form complexes with calcium and hydroxide, In addition, heteropolynuclear organics complexes with calcium, hydroxide and silicate are observed at high pH values and high calcium concentrations with the exception of mannitol. The strength of complexation with silicate decreases from gluconate > sorbitol > galactitol. The adsorption of the selected organics on portlandite and C-S-H systems follows the order gluconate >> sorbitol > mannitol = galactitol. For C-S-H system buffered with Ca(OH)2, a typical Langmuir isotherm was found and adsorption on C-S-H increased with the Ca/Si ratio as well as with the increase of the organic concentration., Comment: preprint (25 pages, 8 figures) and supp. info. The present paper investigates the influence of gluconate and hexitol additives on the precipitation mechanism and kinetics of C-S-H. To this end, wet chemistry C-S-H precipitation experiments were performed under controlled conditions of solution supersaturation, under varying silicate concentration, while the transmittance of the solution was followed. This allowed determining induction times for the formation of C-S-H precursors in the presence and absence of gluconate and three hexitol molecules. Characterization of the precipitates was performed via small angle X-ray scattering and cryo-transmission electron microscopy experiments, which allowed the identification of a multi-step nucleation pathway also in the presence of the organics. Analysis of the induction time data in the framework of the classical nucleation theory revealed a significant increase of the kinetic pre-factor, which is associated to physical rates of cluster collision and aggregation during the nucleation process. Values of the kinetic pre-factor increase in the same order as the complexation constants of calcium and silicate with the each of the organics. This points to a retarding mechanism of crystallization related to steric hindrance of the aggregation of the early formed clusters via adsorption of the organics at their surfaces.

Volume increase between the reactants and the products of alkali silica reaction could reach up to 100%. Taking place inside the aggregates, ASR imposes internal pressure on the surrounding material. In the current paper, we study the possibility of crack growth due to such internal loading. This study is done by employing a semi-analytical mechanical model comprising an elastic solution to a well-known Eshelby problem and a linear elastic fracture mechanics solution to a ring-shaped crack encircling a spheroidal inclusion. The proposed method implies the availability of pre-existing micro-fissures within the aggregate. The study reveals dependence of the crack growing potential on the spheroid's shape: the larger is the ASR pocket - the longer crack it can open. Two most critical shapes, causing a highest stress intensity factor and developing the longest crack, are a sphere and a spheroid with 1/4 aspect ratio respectively. The size analysis of the problem suggests a critical spheroid's radius below which no crack growth is expected. For a chosen material properties and expansion value, such radius lays in the range between 0.1 and 1 micrometer. Independently of the expansion value and the shape of the pocket of ASR product, the maximum crack length has a power-law dependence on the size of a spheroid. All the theoretical predictions are confirmed by a numerical model based on the combination of the finite element method and cohesive element approach.

The current paper investigates the impact of gluconate, D-sorbitol, D-mannitol and D-galactitol on calcium speciation at high pH values by i) solubility measurements of portlandite (Ca(OH)2) and ii) potentiometric titration measurements of calcium salt solutions. Thermodynamic modeling was used to fit the chemical activities of Ca2+ and OH- ions and thus to determine the strength and kind of the different Ca-organic-hydroxide complexes. The strength of complex formation with Ca decreases in the order gluconate >> sorbitol > mannitol > galactitol, which follows the same order as sorption on portlandite. Heteropolynuclear gluconate complexes with calcium and hydroxide dominate the Ca-speciation in the presence of portlandite, while for sorbitol ternary CaSorbOH+ complexes were dominant under alkaline conditions.
