Empirical correlations are still fundamental in the modern design paradigm of axial turbines. Among these, the prominent Ainley and Mathieson correlation (Ainley D. and Mathieson G., 1951, "A Method of Performance Estimation for Axial-Flow Turbines," ARC Reports and Memoranda No. 2974) and its derivatives, plays a crucial role. In this paper, the underlying assumptions of the aforementioned models are discussed by means of a descriptive review, whilst an attempt is made to enhance their reliability and, potentially, accuracy in performance estimations. Closer investigation reveals an intriguing misuse of the lift coefficient in the secondary loss. In light of this, an enhanced model that, notably, builds upon the Zweifel criterion and the vortex penetration depth concept is developed and discussed. The obtained accuracy is subsequently assessed through CFD computations, employing a database comprising 109 cascades. The results indicate a 50% probability of achieving the ±15% error interval, which is twice as good as the most recent Aungier model (Aungier R., 2006, "Turbine Aerodynamics: Axial-Flow and Radial-Inflow Turbine Design and Analysis", ASME Press, New York). Furthermore, the reliability of the proposed model is demonstrated by a reconstruction of the Smith chart, on the one hand, and a performance analysis, on the other. The reconstruction exhibits contours that conform to the original. The results of the performance study are compared with the CFD solutions of eight cascades working in off design conditions and confirm the need of the additionally included turbine design parameters, such as the axial velocity and the meanline radius ratios. The effect of aspect ratio (AS = 0.5, 1.0, 2.0) and Reynolds number (Re = 1, 2, 4, 8 × 105) on the flow and performance characteristics of a 90° curved rectangular diffuser was examined with the aid of the commercial CFD code ANSYS FLUENT. The results from computational analysis revealed the presence of stream vorticity indicative of secondary flow brought about by the curvature of the diffusing duct. As the fluid flow developed, the inertial core flow was pushed to the outer concave wall by overbearing centrifugal forces. The fluid flow sustained marginal changes with increasing aspect ratio and Reynolds number. However, the flow uniformity at the exit was enhanced. The rise in coefficient of static pressure (Cp) recovery and the drop in coefficient of total pressure loss (Closs) with increasing Reynolds number suggested improved diffuser performance. The two-dimensional through-flow modeling of turbomachinery is still one of the most powerful tools available to the turbomachinery industry for aerodynamic design, analysis, and post-processing of test data due to its robustness and speed. Although variety of aspects of such a modeling approach are discussed in the publicly available literature for compressors and turbines, not much emphasis is placed on combined modeling of the fan and the downstream splitter of turbofan engines. The current article addresses this void by presenting a streamline curvature through-flow methodology that is suitable for inverse design for such a problem. A new split-flow method for the streamline solver, alternative to the publicly available analysis-oriented method, is implemented and initially compared with two-dimensional axisymmetric computational fluid dynamics on two representative geometries for high and low bypass ratios. The empirical models for incidence, deviation, loss, and end-wall blockage are compiled from the literature and calibrated against two test cases: experimental data of NASA two-stage fan and three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics of a customdesigned transonic fan stage. Finally, experimental validation against GE-NASA bypass fan case is accomplished to validate the complete methodology. Comparison of overall performance predictions with test data of a cross-flow fan system with a simplified vortex wall scroll casing and with the published experimental characteristics for a cross-flow fan has been carried out to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method. Predicted performance curves by the present mean streamline analysis agree well with experimental data for two different cross-flow fans over the normal operating conditions. The prediction method presented herein can be used efficiently as a tool for the preliminary design and performance analysis of general-purpose cross-flow fans.
