Abstract

Adapting electronics to perfectly conform to non-planar and rough surfaces, such as human skin, is a very challenging task which, if solved, could open up new applications in fields of high economic and scientific interest ranging from health to robotics, wearable electronics, human machine interface and Internet of Things. The key to success lies in defining a technology that can lead to the fabrication of ultra-thin devices while exploiting materials that are ultimately thin, with high mechanical flexibility and excellent electrical properties. Here, we report a hybrid approach for the definition of high-performance, ultra-thin and conformable electronic devices and circuits, based on the integration of ultimately thin semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC), i.e., MoS2, with organic gate dielectric material, i.e., polyvinyl formal (PVF) combined with the ink-jet printing of conductive PEDOT:PSS ink for electrodes definition. Through this cost-effective, fully bottom-up and solution-based approach, transistors and simple digital and analogue circuits are fabricated by a sequential stacking of ultrathin (nanometer) layers on a few micron thick polyimide substrate, which guarantees the high flexibility mandatory for the targeted applications.

Abstract

Solution-processed, large-area, and flexible electronics largely relies on the excellent electronic properties of sp$^2$-hybridized carbon molecules, either in the form of $\pi$-conjugated small molecules and polymers or graphene and carbon nanotubes. Carbon with sp-hybridization, the foundation of the elusive allotrope carbyne, offers vast opportunities for functionalized molecules in the form of linear carbon atomic wires (CAWs), with intriguing and even superior predicted electronic properties. While CAWs represent a vibrant field of research, to date, they have only been applied sparingly to molecular devices. The recent observation of the field-effect in microcrystalline cumulenes suggests their potential applications in solution-processed thin-film transistors but concerns surrounding the stability and electronic performance have precluded developments in this direction. In the present study, ideal field-effect characteristics are demonstrated for solution-processed thin films of tetraphenyl[3]cumulene, the shortest semiconducting CAW. Films are deposited through a scalable, large-area, meniscus-coating technique, providing transistors with hole mobilities in excess of 0.1 cm$^2$ V$^{-1}$ s$^{-1}$, as well as promising operational stability under dark conditions. These results offer a solid foundation for the exploitation of a vast class of molecular semiconductors for organic electronics based on sp-hybridized carbon systems and create a previously unexplored paradigm.

Abstract

Small molecule/polymer semiconductor blends are promising solutions for the development of high‐performing organic electronics. They are able to combine ease in solution processability, thanks to the tunable rheological properties of polymeric inks, with outstanding charge transport properties thanks to high crystalline phases of small molecules. However, because of charge injection issues, so far such good performances are only demonstrated in ad‐hoc device architectures, not suited for high‐frequency applications, where transistor dimensions require downscaling. Here, the successful integration of the most performing blend reported to date, based on 2,7‐dioctyl[1] benzothieno[3,2‐b][1]benzothiophene (C8‐BTBT) and poly(indacenodithiophene‐co‐benzothiadiazole) (C16IDT‐BT), in OFETs characterized by channel and overlap lengths equal to 1.3 and 1.9 µm, respectively, is demonstrated, enabling a transition frequency of 23 MHz at ‐8 V. Two key aspects allowed such result: molecular doping, leading to width‐normalized contact resistance of only 260 Ωcm, allowing to retain an apparent field‐effect mobility as high as 3 cm2/(Vs) in short channel devices, and the implementation of a high capacitance dielectric stack, enabling the reduction of operating voltages below 10 V and the overcoming of self‐heating issues. Abstract

Ambient energy harvesting has great potential to contribute to sustainable development and address growing environmental challenges. Converting waste energy from energy-intensive processes and systems (e.g. combustion engines and furnaces) is crucial to reducing their environmental impact and achieving net-zero emissions. Compact energy harvesters will also be key to powering the exponentially growing smart devices ecosystem that is part of the Internet of Things, thus enabling futuristic applications that can improve our quality of life (e.g. smart homes, smart cities, smart manufacturing, and smart healthcare). To achieve these goals, innovative materials are needed to efficiently convert ambient energy into electricity through various physical mechanisms, such as the photovoltaic effect, thermoelectricity, piezoelectricity, triboelectricity, and radiofrequency wireless power transfer. By bringing together the perspectives of experts in various types of energy harvesting materials, this Roadmap provides extensive insights into recent advances and present challenges in the field. Additionally, the Roadmap analyses the key performance metrics of these technologies in relation to their ultimate energy conversion limits. Building on these insights, the Roadmap outlines promising directions for future research to fully harness the potential of energy harvesting materials for green energy anytime, anywhere.

Abstract

In this paper, the development of a simple and reproducible approach for the fabrication of n‐type organic field‐effect transistors with a 350 nm‐long channel on flexible substrates is reported. The critical feature of the device, the channel length, is obtained using a self‐alignment process that exploits the vertical step of a plasma‐etched thin Parylene C layer, according to the so‐called step‐edge architecture. The fabricated devices can operate in continuous mode and show an average and maximum transition frequency of 2.5 MHz and 5.5 MHz, respectively. The possibility of easily obtaining high‐performing, short channel organic transistors on flexible substrates, without the use of expensive and high‐resolution techniques, represents an interesting step toward the miniaturization of flexible circuits in the field of large‐area organic electronics. Adapting electronics to perfectly conform to nonplanar and rough surfaces, such as human skin, is a challenging task, which could open up new applications in fields of high economic and scientific interest, ranging from health to robotics, human-machine interface, and Internet of Things. The key to success lies in defining a technology that can lead to ultrathin devices, exploiting ultimately thin materials, with high mechanical flexibility and excellent electrical properties. Here, we report a hybrid approach for the development of high-performance, ultrathin and conformable electronic devices, based on the integration of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides, i.e., MoS2, with organic gate dielectric material, i.e., polyvinyl formal (PVF) combined with inkjet printed PEDOT:PSS electrodes. Through this novel approach, transistors and simple digital and analogue circuits are fabricated by a sequential stacking of ultrathin (nanometer) layers on a few micrometers thick polyimide substrate, which guarantees the high flexibility mandatory for the targeted applications.

15. Designing Contact Independent High-Performance Low-Cost Flexible Electronics.

Abstract

Organic semiconductors enable low-cost solution processing of optoelectronic devices on flexible substrates. Their use in contemporary applications, however, is sparse due to persistent challenges in achieving the requisite performance levels in a reliable and reproducible manner. A critical bottleneck is the inefficiency associated with charge injection. Here, large-scale simulations are employed to identify operational windows where key device parameters that are difficult to control experimentally, such as the contact resistance, become less consequential to overall device functionality. This design methodology overcomes injection barrier limitations in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), leading to high charge carrier mobility and significantly expanding the range of suitable electrode materials. Leveraging this new understanding, all-organic, solution-deposited OFETs are successfully fabricated on flexible substrates. These devices incorporate printed contacts and showcase mobilities exceeding 5 cm 2  Vs -1 . These results provide a route for accessing the fundamental limits of material properties even in the absence of ideal contacts - a critical step in establishing reliable structure/property relationships and optimal material design paradigms. While reducing the injection barrier and contact resistance remains critical for achieving high OFET performance, this work demonstrates a path toward consistently achieving high charge carrier mobility through device geometry design, ultimately reducing processing complexity and cost., (© 2024 The Author(s).
