5. The Development of a Mathematics Teacher's Professional Identity during Her First Year Teaching

Abstract

This study is focused on a period that poses several challenges for the development of mathematics teachers' professional identities and agency: their first year of teaching in schools. During this period, beginning mathematics teachers confront tensions and contradictions among the principles, ideals, and experiences encountered during pre-service education and the demands, and restrictions of their teaching practice in schools. This article approaches this topic by developing an interpretative case study centered on one novice mathematics teacher, Sol. The aim is to describe and understand the development of Sol's professional identity and agency during her first teaching year. Considering identity development as a diachronic phenomenon, we carry out a narrative analysis of the research data. The findings show that Sol developed her professional identity and agency through a process that gathered together the teaching practices possible inside her school, the positions she could negotiate as a newcomer inside the institution, and the cultural practices and discourses embodied during pre-service education. The results bring to the forefront the profound and tense interactions between the intimate and personal terrain of mathematics teachers and the social and cultural world of the schools where they work. Sol's case also contributes to understanding the role that a robust pre-service education can play in the development of beginning teachers' professional identities and in the possibility they could become agents of transformation in their schools.

Abstract

This volume shares and discusses significant new trends and developments in research and practices related to various aspects of preparing prospective secondary mathematics teachers from 2005–2015. It provides both an overview of the current state-of-the-art and outstanding recent research reports from an international perspective. The authors completed a thorough review of the literature by examining major journals in the field of mathematics education, and other journals related to teacher education and technology. The systematic review includes four major themes: field experiences; technologies, tools and resources; teachers' knowledge; and teachers' professional identities. Each of them is presented regarding theoretical perspectives, methodologies, and major findings. Then the authors discuss what is known in the field and what we still need to know related to the major topics.

Abstract

The topic study group on the mathematics education of prospective secondary teachers is dedicated to sharing and discussing significant new trends and developments in research and practices related to various aspects of the education of prospective secondary mathematics teachers from an international perspective. Teacher education is an area in which, although we have developed an understanding about the process of becoming a teacher, many questions still remain open. Our goal in this topic group is to address some of these questions. We discuss major areas in the field, including the nature and structure of teachers’ knowledge and its development, models and routes of mathematics teacher education, development of professional identities as prospective mathematics teachers, field experiences and their impact on prospective secondary mathematics teachers’ development of the craft of teaching, and use of various technological devices and resources in preparing prospective secondary mathematics teachers.

Abstract

Withdrawal from universities and failure in mathematics are currently considered complex research issues. Available literature on these topics advocates for holistic theoretical approaches. Following this suggestion, the present article uses Situated Learning Theory for studying the processes through which freshman students craft and develop their identities while participating in practices within a university community, focusing particularly on the socio-cultural construction of success and failure in mathematics. The research, based on a qualitative methodology approach, was carried out on a Computer Science degree program, which is characterized by giving special importance to mathematics in the first-year curriculum and for featuring high dropout and failure rates. Data were collected during six months of ethnographic fieldwork involving six freshman students and three first-year teachers. Data analysis gave rise to four emergent categories regarding success and failure as socio-cultural constructions: labels used to categorize students and their developed identities, the relationships established between teachers and students, the different ways of understanding withdrawal, and the differences between high school and higher education.
