A primer for biostatistics in R is a set of learning materials developed to support you in better developing critical thinking using statistics. Critical thinking very generally is a mode of thinking that is self-directed and evidence based. Statistical thinking is thus an ideal opportunity and partner in honing literacy adventure skills in this domain. Enhancing clarity, accuracy, precision, relevance, depth, breadth, significance, logic and fairness - all key criteria of critical thinking - with data or evidence both quantitative and qualitative is a profound tool as a scientist and citizen. It should be fundamental to statistics. Hence, the primary goal of this set of materials is to engender statistical thinking that embodies these principles and explores these criteria using data.

Publish your data when collection is complete - prior to the pre-print or publication. Surface your data and meta-data openly in a data repository with a DOI and versioning. Not novel but also not the norm in the historical or even contemporary culture of many scientific disciplines. Nonetheless, sharing sooner enables more rapid and effective discovery, and dramatic changes can happen. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the incredible power of sharing data, simple summary statistics, and all findings extremely rapidly - as collected or in real-time. The public and scientific community at large used these resources to engage in open, novel data-driven science and evidence-informed decision making. In many other disciplines, we can adopt these lessons for both societal good and better science. Here, a simple set of direct benefits to the primary researcher are articulated and innovations to the scientific process and cultural practice of evidence deliberation are proposed.

Nature deficit disorder is an experiential hypothesis for behavioral ecology. It proposes that humans spending too little time outdoors are more likely to experience behavioral challenges and reductions in cognition and mental well-being. Richard Louv first developed these ideas formally in the book entitled ���Last child in the woods��� in 2008. A more recent and expansive book was published in 2012 entitled ���The nature principle��� and another in 2019 entitled ���Our wild calling���. These works precipitated a movement to better support programs for outdoor activities for children and stimulated incredible (but not without controversy) scientific evidence that reconnecting with nature can enhance many performance measures in people - adult and children alike. Here, we can take a sensible perspective that tracking and enhancing simple interactions in natural systems, outdoors, like provides an opportunity to explore personal performance and develop new mental and emotional skills.

A synthesis of existing research in 2020-2021 examining higher-order peer-reviewed publications associated with education and the COVID-19 pandemic is summarized. A total of 99 studies and over 7000 individuals have been examined to date exploring effects and responses of the pandemic on educators.

Systematic review and meta-analysis: open synthesis science supports effective decision-makingBackground/Question/MethodsScientific synthesis is a rapidly evolving field of meta-science pivotal to numerous dimensions of the scientific endeavor and to society at large. In science, meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and evidence mapping are powerful explanatory means to aggregate evidence. However, direct compilation of existing primary evidence is also increasingly common to explore the big picture for pattern and process detection and is used to augment more common synthesis tools. Meta-analyses of primary study literature can be combined with open data assets reporting frequency, distribution, and traits of species. Climate, land-use, and other measures of ecosystem-level attributes can also be derived to support literature syntheses. In society, evidence-based decision making is best served through a diversity of synthesis outcomes in addition to meta-analyses and reviews. The hypothesis tested in this meta-science synthesis is that the diversity of tools and evidence to scientific syntheses has changed in contemporary ecology and environmental sciences to more comprehensively reuse and incorporate evidence for knowledge production.OutcomesCase studies and a formal examination of the scope and extent of the literature reporting scientific synthesis as the primary focus in the environmental sciences and ecology were done. Topically, nearly 700 studies use scientific synthesis in some capacity in these two fields. Specifically, less than a dozen formally incorporate disparate evidence to connect related concepts. Meta-analyses and formal systematic reviews number at over 5000 publications. Syntheses and aggregations of existing published aggregations are relatively uncommon at less than 10 instances. Reviews, discussions, forums, and notes examining synthesis in these two fields are also frequent at 2500 offerings. Analyses of contemporary subsets of all these publications in the literature identified at least three common themes. Reuse and reproducibility, effect sizes and strength of evidence, and a comprehensive need for linkages to inform decision making. Specific novel tools used to explore derived data for evidence-based decision making in the environmental sciences and ecology included evidence maps, summaries of lessons, identification of flagship studies in the environmental studies that transformed decision making, reporting of sample sizes at many levels that supported effect size calculations, and finally, reporting of a path forward not just for additional research but for application. Collectively, this meta-synthesis of research demonstrated an increasing capacity for diverse scientific syntheses to inform decision making for the environmental sciences.Synthesis4decisionsSynthesis can confront biases and assumptions and thus change direction of science-based policy.Transparency promotes interactions between community of practice and our philosophy of science. Sandbox-thinking and tools that support version control, iteration, review, and reuse all promote better scientific synthesis.Policy always uses evidence in some form, and contemporary scientific syntheses can provide a wider breadth of elements to draw from and support stronger evidence implementation.

The most effective interventions are often relatively more active, directed, and intentional depending on the field of study. Within the nature-deficit disorder framework, research that examines hands-on, active interactions with natural systems suggests that returns are significantly greater relative to passive approaches to natural systems. For instance, the Microbiome Rewilding Hypothesis (MRH) and Psycho-Evolutionary Restoration Hypothesis (PERH) suggests that nature-based health interventions that include people fixing nature (via planting, gardening, etc) generates reciprocal restoration feedbacks between the people and the ecosystems. This win-win science of reciprocity between other natural systems and the actions of people is relatively well established. This is an opportunity to be mutualistically enhance two systems in need of support - you and the natural communities we inhabit and share. A simple eudaemonic feedback loop can begin with an examination of sustainability of life choices.

R is a solution to many challenges including climate change because it can be used to enable reproducible and replicable science.
