Objectives: In public discourses in the United States, adoption is often suggested as a less objectionable, equal substitute for abortion, despite this pregnancy outcome occurring much less frequently than the outcomes of abortion and parenting. This qualitative study explores whether and how abortion patients weighed adoption as part of their pregnancy decisions and, for those who did, identifies factors that contributed to their ultimate decision against adoption. Study design: We interviewed 29 abortion patients from 6 facilities in Michigan and New Mexico in 2015. We conducted a thematic analysis using both deductive and inductive approaches to describe participants’ perspectives, preferences, and experiences regarding the consideration of adoption for their pregnancy. Results: Participants’ reasons why adoption was not an appropriate option for their pregnancy were grounded in their ideas of the roles and responsibilities of parenting and fell into three themes. First, participants described continuing the pregnancy and giving birth as inseparable from the decision to parent. Second, choosing adoption would represent an irresponsible abnegation of parental duty. Third, adoption could put their child’s safety and well-being at risk. Conclusions: Adoption was not an equally acceptable substitute for abortion among abortion patients. For them, adoption was a decision that represented taking on, and then abdicating, the role of parent. This made adoption a particularly unsuitable choice for their pregnancy. Implications: Rhetoric suggesting that adoption is an equal alternative to abortion does not reflect the experiences, preferences, or values of how abortion patients assess what options are appropriate for their pregnancy.

Despite a rich literature on the effects of self-efficacy (SE) on various outcomes, there is little discussion of its effects on obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The purpose of this study was to develop and validate the Facing-Contamination Self-Efficacy Scale (FC-SES), a measure of beliefs about one's capability to face OCD-relevant contamination triggers. The final sample consisted of 129 participants, age 18 and over, who were recruited through Amazon's Mechanical Turk. Factor structure, reliability, and validity were assessed using exploratory factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, and correlational analyses, respectively. Factor analysis yielded 2 clearly interpretable factors: human-related contamination (9 items), and animal-related contamination (5 items). The 14-item FC-SES demonstrated very good internal consistency reliability ([alpha] = .87), as well as good convergent and discriminant validity. Results suggest the FC-SES is a valid and reliable tool that can be used in future research exploring the relationship between SE and contamination-related OCD symptoms., Author(s): Lori F. Current evidence suggests that neonatal immunity is functionally distinct from adults. Although TLR signaling through the adaptor protein, MyD88, has been shown to be critical for survival to sepsis in adults, little is known about the role of MyD88 or TRIF in neonatal sepsis. We demonstrate that TRIF(-/-) but not MyD88(-/-) neonates are highly susceptible to Escherichia coli peritonitis and bacteremia. This was associated with decreased innate immune recruitment and function. Importantly, we found that the reverse was true in adults that MyD88(-/-) but not TRIF(-/-) or wild-type adults are susceptible to E. coli peritonitis and bacteremia. In addition, we demonstrate that TRIF but not MyD88 signaling is critical for the TLR4 protective adjuvant effect we have previously demonstrated. These data suggest a differential requirement for the survival of neonates versus adults to Gram-negative infection, and that modulation of TRIF in neonates can be used to augment survival to neonatal sepsis.

Preclinical studies of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) vaccine candidates have typically shown post-infection virological control, but protection against acquisition of infection has previously only been reported against neutralization-sensitive virus challenges. Here we demonstrate vaccine protection against acquisition of fully heterologous, neutralization-resistant simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) challenges in rhesus monkeys. Adenovirus/poxvirus and adenovirus/adenovirus-vector-based vaccines expressing SIV(SME543) Gag, Pol and Env antigens resulted in an 80% or greater reduction in the per-exposure probability of infection against repetitive, intrarectal SIV(MAC251) challenges in rhesus monkeys. Protection against acquisition of infection showed distinct immunological correlates compared with post-infection virological control and required the inclusion of Env in the vaccine regimen. These data demonstrate the proof-of-concept that optimized HIV-1 vaccine candidates can block acquisition of stringent, heterologous, neutralization-resistant virus challenges in rhesus monkeys.

A needs assessment survey was designed and administered to measure knowledge of and attitudes toward food safety impacts of nonthermal processing technologies of shellfish and produce industry personnel and extension educators. An online survey was sent via e-mail notification with the survey link through professional listserves. The survey evaluated background information, knowledge, attitude, and training needs. A variety of response formats was used. Knowledge/attitude responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics, 1-way ANOVA and t-tests using SPSS software and reported at P < 0.05. Industry (N = 106) and educator (N = 52) respondents had below the proficient knowledge score (80%), 50% and 67%, respectively. Question reliability was >0.9. There were no differences in attitudes and knowledge between the 2 industry groups. The total attitude score, based on a 5-point Likert scale (1 = strongly disagree, 5 = strongly agree), of the produce and shellfish industry and educator respondents toward nonthermal processing technologies was 3.6 ± 0.4, 3.4 ± 0.5, and 3.6 ± 0.4, respectively. Respondent's slightly indifferent attitude may reflect low knowledge regarding the impact of nonthermal processing technologies on food safety and quality. Both groups indicated a desire for information and/or training. For both industry and educators, common preferred formats for outreach resources were printed materials, Internet/web-based materials, and PowerPoint. Educators identified barriers as equipment cost, lack of information, and lack of product validation. While the majority of the respondents were aware of nonthermal processing, they were not knowledgeable, indicating a need for education and outreach in nonthermal processing methods to both shellfish/produce industry and food safety educators.

The purpose of the study was to investigate music education and music therapy majors' use of Twitter and their perceptions and knowledge related to policies and practices. Music majors (N = 238) from five universities in the Southeastern and Midwestern United States participated in a 16-question researcher-designed survey. Results indicated that Twitter was most often used for social purposes. Academic use of Twitter was reported less frequently. Music education majors were likely to have knowledge of Twitter-based incidences of unprofessional content. Similar Twitter usage was reported in terms of gender. Student/faculty classroom interactions involving Twitter were minimal. Implications and avenues for possible future research are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to examine high school music teachers' knowledge of music therapy, interest in music therapy, and career recommendations for music therapy relative to other music careers. High school music teachers (N  = 65) from one southeastern state completed a researcher-designed survey instrument designed to investigate these areas. Results indicated varied levels of knowledge about music therapy, although teachers who previously attended institutions that offered music therapy degree programs provided higher knowledge ratings than those who had not attended institutions with music therapy programs. Additionally, participants reported a relatively high interest in music therapy and a willingness to promote it as a career to their students. Participants reported that they were most likely to recommend music education as a career to their students, followed by music performance and music therapy. In response to open-ended questions, participants indicated that they believed personal characteristics were the most important qualities of prospective music therapists and that musical characteristics were the most important qualities of prospective music educators. They also expressed an interest in more information about music therapy, especially related to job characteristics. Implications of these findings and suggestions for future research are discussed. BACKGROUND:Live, attenuated viral vectors that express HIV-1 antigens are being investigated as an approach to generating durable immune responses against HIV-1 in humans. We recently developed a replication-competent, highly attenuated Ad26 vector that expresses mosaic HIV-1 Env (rcAd26.MOS1.HIV-Env, "rcAd26"). Here we present the results of a first-in-human, placebo-controlled clinical trial to test the safety, immunogenicity and mucosal shedding of rcAd26 given orally. METHODS:Healthy adults were randomly assigned to receive a single oral dose of vaccine or placebo at 5:1 ratio in a dosage escalation of 10^8 to 10^11 rcAd26 VP (nominal doses) at University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester, NY, USA. Participants were isolated and monitored for reactogenicity for 10 days post-vaccination, and adverse events were recorded up to day 112. Rectal and oropharyngeal secretions were evaluated for shedding of the vaccine. Humoral and cellular immune responses were measured. Household contacts were monitored for secondary vaccine transmission. RESULTS:We enrolled 22 participants and 11 household contacts between February 7 and June 24, 2015. 18 participants received one dose of HIV-1 vaccine and 4 participants received placebo. The vaccine caused only mild to moderate adverse events. No vaccine-related SAEs were observed. No infectious rcAd26 viral particles were detected in rectal or oropharyngeal secretions from any participant. Env-specific ELISA and ELISPOT responses were undetectable. No household contacts developed vaccine-induced HIV-1 seropositivity or vaccine-associated illness. CONCLUSIONS:The highly attenuated rcAd26.MOS1.HIV-Env vaccine was well tolerated up to 10^11 VP in healthy, HIV-1-uninfected adults, though the single dose was poorly immunogenic suggesting the replicative capacity of the vector was too attenuated. There was no evidence of shedding of infectious virus or secondary vaccine transmission following the isolation period. These data suggest the use of less attenuated viral vectors in future studies of live, oral HIV-1 vaccines. TRIAL REGISTRATION:ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02366013.

An online needs assessment survey of healthcare providers was developed and implemented to determine knowledge and attitudes about the benefits and risks of consuming seafood along with how this might impact patient/clientele counseling. Only 6 of the 45 knowledge items queried (13%) met the 80% subject mastery or proficiency with a total knowledge score of 56 ± 18%. Based on this survey, it was found that healthcare providers were less than proficient regarding all knowledge areas for seafood. Understanding of seafood safety and contaminants was low. In addition, while the majority (76%) of healthcare respondents knew the correct recommendation for seafood meals per week, they failed to identify the groups that were targeted by the Food and Drug Administration/Environmental Protection Agency (FDA/EPA) advisory about seafood and mercury and therefore could be providing inaccurate information. Attitudinal responses for 18 items resulted in an overall average score of 3.28 ± 0.47 meaning slightly agree (based on a 5-point Likert scale strongly disagree-strongly agree). While trends showed that it was important to the respondents to provide accurate information (3.78 ± 1.06) about seafood to their patients, they felt more comfortable recommending that their patients follow government advice (3.52 ± 0.91) about both seafood safety and which seafood to eat over other sources. Combined with a low knowledge base, attitudinal responses indicate that there could be a barrier to both outreach education to these healthcare providers and to their patient counseling regarding seafood consumption. Results also showed that a combination of online, science-based, easy to access information with the capability to provide brochure-formatted information would appear to be the best way to communicate seafood safety, nutrition, and health information.

Food safety training materials, targeted for residential childcare institution (RCCI) staff of facilities of 20 residents or less, were developed, piloted, and evaluated. The goal was to assist in the implementation of a Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP)-based food safety plan as required by Food and Nutrition Service/United States Department of Agriculture. RCCI staff and instructor training manuals, Food Safety Basics: Food Safety Education for RCCIs was developed and pilot tested in RCCIs in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts. The program was evaluated by participants and pre-/posttraining onsite inspector and microbial assessments. The core curriculum contained 3 modules and corresponding activities: Module 1: cause, prevention, and strategies to reduce foodborne illness; Module 2: components of a HACCP-based food safety plan and standard operating procedures; and Module 3: actual food safety plan development, including instructions for implementation and corresponding monitoring procedures required. There were 50 to 82 RCCI staff members that attended 2 or 3 modules. Participants rated the modules 4.5 ± 0.4, 4.3 ± 0.4, and 4.4 ± 0.4 out of 5-point Likert scale (1 = strongly disagree, 5 = strongly agree) for teaching modules 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The evaluations assessed their understanding of key topic areas taught. Onsite inspections showed improvement in many critical food safety issues. Some deficiencies still appeared to be problematic, such as refrigerator temperature monitoring and issues with storage and cross-contamination.

This article describes an innovative assessment tool designed to evaluate the effectiveness of a food safety skills curriculum for learners receiving special education services. As schools respond to the increased demand for training students with special needs about food safety, the need for effective curricula and tools is also increasing. A "Food Safety Education for High School and Transition Special Needs Students" curriculum served as the basis upon which our assessment tool was developed. The project was a collaborative effort by food safety and education professionals in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. This USDA-funded initiative emerged from teacher-generated data that identified critical gaps in food safety knowledge and skills among students with disabilities (SWD) receiving special education services. As an adjunct to this curriculum, a Food Safety Practices Assessment Tool was developed to: 1) conduct observations of students as they demonstrate food safety practices, and 2) use this information to design classroom-based learning activities that are aligned with students' Individual Education Plans (IEP). Pilot data suggest that the tool is valid and reliable for use in a kitchen-based setting. This is the first known tool of its kind to test food safety skills of individuals with special needs in a real-world environment. Further testing is needed to determine the usefulness of the tool for broader audiences. (Contains 3 tables and 2 figures.)

There is strong consumer demand for local, value- added food products; however, these smaller scale food manufacturing operations tend to face more challenges in understanding and complying with food safety regulations, specifically, the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Preventive Controls for Human Food (PCHF) rule. An eight- module educational program was developed to introduce food safety throughout the product development life cycle and included concepts related to the FSMA PCHF rule. The program was offered in person (n = 2) and virtually (n = 6) to 143 participants in total, who were mostly early-stage food developers. Most (74%, n = 90) had little to no prior food safety-related training and experience. The majority (93%, n = 90) agreed they will apply the knowledge and skills learned in the course to food applications, such as developing food safety plans, label review, and good manufacturing practices. Self-rated level understanding for each module ranged from 4.4 to 4.6 on a 5-point Likert scale. Overall, participants felt better prepared to conduct various food safety activities after taking the course, supporting the need for nonmandatory training opportunities to enhance FSMA PCHF regulatory compliance.
