Abstract

Physics research is constantly pursuing more efficient silicon detectors, often trying to develop complex and optimized geometries, thus leading to non-trivial engineering challenges. Although critical for this optimization, there are few silicon tile mechanical data available in the literature. In an attempt to partially fill this gap, the present work details various mechanical-related aspects of spaceborne silicon detectors. Specifically, this study concerns three experimental campaigns with different objectives: a mechanical characterization of the material constituting the detector (in terms of density, elastic, and failure properties), an analysis of the adhesive effect on the loads, and a wirebond vibrational endurance campaign performed on three different unpotted samples. By collecting and discussing the experimental results, this work aims to fulfill its purpose of providing insight into the mechanical problems associated with this specific application and procuring input data of paramount importance. For the study to be complete, the perspective taken is broader than mere silicon analysis and embraces all related aspects; i.e., the detector–structure adhesive interface and the structural integrity of wirebonds. In summary, this paper presents experimental data on the material properties of silicon detectors, the impact of the adhesive on the gluing stiffness, and unpotted wirebond vibrational endurance. At the same time, the discussion of the results furnishes an all-encompassing view of the design-associated criticalities in experiments where silicon detectors are employed.

Abstract

A new generation magnetic spectrometer in space will open the opportunity to investigate the frontiers in direct high-energy cosmic ray measurements and to precisely measure the amount of the rare antimatter component in cosmic rays beyond the reach of current missions. We propose the concept for an Antimatter Large Acceptance Detector In Orbit (ALADInO), designed to take over the legacy of direct measurements of cosmic rays in space performed by PAMELA and AMS-02. ALADInO features technological solutions conceived to overcome the current limitations of magnetic spectrometers in space with a layout that provides an acceptance larger than 10 m2 sr. A superconducting magnet coupled to precision tracking and time-of-flight systems can provide the required matter–antimatter separation capabilities and rigidity measurement resolution with a Maximum Detectable Rigidity better than 20 TV. The inner 3D-imaging deep calorimeter, designed to maximize the isotropic acceptance of particles, allows for the measurement of cosmic rays up to PeV energies with accurate energy resolution to precisely measure features in the cosmic ray spectra. The operations of ALADInO in the Sun–Earth L2 Lagrangian point for at least 5 years would enable unique revolutionary observations with groundbreaking discovery potentials in the field of astroparticle physics by precision measurements of electrons, positrons, and antiprotons up to 10 TeV and of nuclear cosmic rays up to PeV energies, and by the possible unambiguous detection and measurement of low-energy antideuteron and antihelium components in cosmic rays.

Abstract

The Large Area Detector (LAD) is the high-throughput, spectral-timing instrument onboard the eXTP mission, a flagship mission of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the China National Space Administration, with a large European participation coordinated by Italy and Spain. The eXTP mission is currently performing its phase B study, with a target launch at the end-2027. The eXTP scientific payload includes four instruments (SFA, PFA, LAD and WFM) offering unprecedented simultaneous wide-band X-ray timing and polarimetry sensitivity. The LAD instrument is based on the design originally proposed for the LOFT mission. It envisages a deployed 3.2 m2 effective area in the 2-30 keV energy range, achieved through the technology of the large-area Silicon Drift Detectors - offering a spectral resolution of up to 200 eV FWHM at 6 keV - and of capillary plate collimators - limiting the field of view to about 1 degree. In this paper we will provide an overview of the LAD instrument design, its current status of development and anticipated performance.

Abstract

In the present study we demonstrate how the sensitive property of the constituent parts of silkworm silk fiber can be applied to the field of soft composite materials. It concerns the structural and intrinsic functional characteristics of silk vs. the macroscopic property and the realization of functional composites. Silk fiber reinforced silicone rubber (SR) composites have been fabricated with different fiber lengths. The key structural features of silk made of stiff nanocrystals, including hydrogen bonded β-strands and β-sheet nanocrystals, when embedded in a softer matrix demonstrate that the tensile strength as well as the stiffness of the composites are higher than those measured for SR reinforced with synthetic polyether-ether-ketone fibers. Moreover, the intrinsic luminescence of protein nanocrystals permits the direct observation of the deformation with accurate measurement of the strain in the composite. Based on the intrinsic properties of such natural hierarchical material, these findings will allow to transfer the engineering of composite materials, particularly, soft functional composites, to a new applications ranging from strain measurements in biological tissue to monitoring tool in structural composites.

Abstract

Parafilm is a soft, solvent-proof and self-sealant thermoplastic material obtained by blending paraffin wax and polyolefin and that displays irreversible elongational thinning as the material is stretched. In this paper a lamination process was used to transfer graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) on self-adherent Parafilm substrate and we show that a high-strain state of such conductive Parafilm/GNPs film is reversible when the film is transferred by lamination to a fluoroelastomer (FKM) substrate. The stretching of GNP network stuck on viscoelastic Parafilm gave rise to regions of high and low GNP concentrations with increasing the electrical resistance upon stretching. Upon relaxation from a high-strain state, the composite film on FKM substrate maintain the initial electrical conductive state. Finally it was shown the reduction of the ethanol corrosion action in terms of swelling and mechanical performance of the neat FKM when the Parafilm/GNPs film is used for its packaging. In view of the low cost thermoplastic polymer used for the transferring and the lamination method proposed, these findings represent a facile and an industrial scalable approach to realize novel multifunctional elastomer composites., NMP is supported by the European Research Council (ERC PoC 2015 SILKENE nr. 693670) and by the European Commission H2020 under the Graphene Flagship (WP14 “Polymer composites”, n. 696656) and under the FET Proactive (“Neurofibres” no. 732344).
