We present a study of optically selected dual AGN with projected separations of 3--97~kpc. Using multi-wavelength (MWL) information (optical, X-rays, mid-IR), we characterized the intrinsic nuclear properties of this sample and compared them with those of isolated systems. Among the 124 X-ray detected AGN candidates, 52 appear in pairs and 72 as single X-ray sources. Through MWL analysis, we confirmed the presence of the AGN in a fraction >80\% of the detected targets in pairs (42 over 52). X-ray spectral analysis confirms the trend of increasing AGN luminosity with decreasing separation, suggesting that mergers may have contributed in triggering more luminous AGN. Through X/mid-IR ratio $vs$ X-ray colors, we estimated a fraction of Compton-thin AGN (with 10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ $$10$^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$) sources. These fractions of obscured sources are larger than those found in samples of isolated AGN, confirming that pairs of AGN show higher obscuration. This trend is further confirmed by comparing the de-reddened [O\ III] emission with the observed X-ray luminosity. However, the derived fraction of Compton-thick sources in this sample at early stage of merging is lower than reported for late-merging dual-AGN samples. Comparing N$_{\rm H}$ from X-rays with that derived from E(B-V) from Narrow Line Regions, we find that the absorbing material is likely associated with the torus or the Broad Line Regions. We also explored the X-ray detection efficiency of dual-AGN candidates, finding that, when observed properly (at on-axis positions and with long exposures), X-ray data represent a powerful way to confirm and investigate dual-AGN systems., 12 pages, 4 figures. We present in this paper a first step toward a semi-analytical treatment of the accretion process in wind-fed neutron star supergiant X-ray binaries with eccentric orbits. We consider the case of a spherically symmetric wind for the supergiant star and a simplified model for the accretion onto the compact object. A self-consistent calculation of the photoionization of the stellar wind by the X-rays from the accreting neutron star is included. This effect is convolved with the modulation of the mass accretion rate induced by the eccentric orbit to obtain the expected X-ray luminosity of a system along the orbit. As part of our results, we first show that the bi-modality of low and high X-ray luminosity solutions for supergiant X-ray binaries reported in previous papers is likely to result from the effect of the neutron star approaching first and then moving away from the companion (without coexisting simultaneously). We propose that episodes of strong wind photoionization can give rise to off-states of the sources. Our calculations are applied to the case of a few classical supergiant X-ray binary systems with known eccentricities (Vela X-1, 4U 1907+09, GX 301-2) and to the case of the only supergiant fast X-ray transient with a confirmed eccentric orbit, IGR J08408-4503. The results are compared with observational findings on these sources. We summarize the results of a dedicated effort made between 2012 and 2019 to follow the evolution of the cyclotron line in Her X-1 through repeated NuSTAR observations. The previously observed nearly 20-year-long decay of the cyclotron line energy has ended in 2012: from then on, the pulse-phase-averaged flux-corrected cyclotron line energy has remained stable and constant at an average value of Ecyc = (37.44 ± 0.07) keV (normalized to a flux level of 6.8 RXTE/ASM-cts s−1). The flux dependence of Ecyc discovered in 2007 is now measured with high precision, giving a slope of (0.675 ± 0.075) keV/(ASM-cts s−1), corresponding to an increase of 6.5% of Ecyc for an increase in flux by a factor of two. We also find that all line parameters as well as the continuum parameters show a correlation with X-ray flux. While a correlation between Ecyc and X-ray flux (both positive and negative) is now known for several accreting binaries with various suggestions for the underlying physics, the phenomenon of a long-term decay has so far only been seen in Her X-1 and Vela X-1, with far less convincing explanations.

We report on our analysis of the 2019 outburst of the X-ray accreting pulsar 4U 1901+03 observed with Insight-HXMT and NICER. Both spectra and pulse profiles evolve significantly in the decaying phase of the outburst. Dozens of flares are observed throughout the outburst. They are more frequent and brighter at the outburst peak. We find that the flares, which have a duration from tens to hundreds of seconds, are generally brighter than the persistent emission by a factor of $\sim$ 1.5. The pulse profile shape during the flares can be significantly different than that of the persistent emission. In particular, a phase shift is clearly observed in many cases. We interpret these findings as direct evidence of changes of the pulsed beam pattern, due to transitions between the sub- and super-critical accretion regimes on a short time scale. We also observe that at comparable luminosities the flares' pulse profiles are rather similar to those of the persistent emission. This indicates that the accretion on the polar cap of the neutron star is mainly determined by the luminosity, i.e., the mass accretion rate., 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate the absorption and emission features in observations of GX 301-2 detected with Insight-HXMT/LE in 2017-2019. At different orbital phases, we found prominent Fe Kalpha, Kbeta and Ni Kalpha lines, as well as Compton shoulders and Fe K-shell absorption edges. These features are due to the X-ray reprocessing caused by the interaction between the radiation from the source and surrounding accretion material. According to the ratio of iron lines Kalpha and Kbeta, we infer the accretion material is in a low ionisation state. We find an orbital-dependent local absorption column density, which has a large value and strong variability around the periastron. We explain its variability as a result of inhomogeneities of the accretion environment and/or instabilities of accretion processes. In addition, the variable local column density is correlated with the equivalent width of the iron Kalpha lines throughout the orbit, which suggests that the accretion material near the neutron star is spherically distributed., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Chromospheric Ca II activity cycles are frequently found in late-type stars, but no systematic programs have been created to search for their coronal X-ray counterparts. The typical time scale of Ca II activity cycles ranges from years to decades. Therefore, long-lasting missions are needed to detect the coronal counterparts. The XMM-Newton satellite has so far detected X-ray cycles in five stars. A particularly intriguing question is at what age (and at what activity level) X-ray cycles set in. To this end, in 2015 we started the X-ray monitoring of the young solar-like star ? Eridani, previously observed on two occasions: in 2003 and in early 2015, both by XMM-Newton. With an age of 440 Myr, it is one of the youngest solar-like stars with a known chromospheric Ca II cycle. We collected the most recent Mount Wilson S-index data available for ? Eridani, starting from 2002, including previously unpublished data. We found that the Ca II cycle lasts 2.92 ± 0.02 yr, in agreement with past results. From the long-term XMM-Newton lightcurve, we find clear and systematic X-ray variability of our target, consistent with the chromospheric Ca II cycle. The average X-ray luminosity is 2 × 10erg s, with an amplitude that is only a factor of 2 throughout the cycle. We apply a new method to describe the evolution of the coronal emission measure distribution of ? Eridani in terms of solar magnetic structures: Active regions, cores of active regions, and flares covering the stellar surface at varying filling fractions. Combinations of these three types of magnetic structures can only describe the observed X-ray emission measure of ? Eridani if the solar flare emission measure distribution is restricted to events in the decay phase. The interpretation is that flares in the corona of ? Eridani last longer than their solar counterparts. We ascribe this to the lower metallicity of ? Eridani. Our analysis also revealed that the X-ray cycle of ? Eridani is strongly dominated by cores of active regions. The coverage fraction of cores throughout the cycle changes by the same factor as the X-ray luminosity. The maxima of the cycle are characterized by a high percentage of covering fraction of the flares, consistent with the fact that flaring events are seen in the corresponding short-term X-ray lightcurves predominately at the cycle maxima. The high X-ray emission throughout the cycle of ? New astronomy reviews 86, 101546 (2019). doi:10.1016/j.newar.2020.101546, High mass X-ray binaries are among the brightest X-ray sources in the Milky Way, as well as in nearby Galaxies. Thanks to their highly variable emissions and complex phenomenology, they have attracted the interest of the high energy astrophysical community since the dawn of X-ray Astronomy. In more recent years, they have challenged our comprehension of physical processes in many more energy bands, ranging from the infrared to very high energies.In this review, we provide a broad but concise summary of the physical processes dominating the emission from high mass X-ray binaries across virtually the whole electromagnetic spectrum. These comprise the interaction of stellar winds with the high gravitational and magnetic fields of compact objects, the behaviour of matter under extreme magnetic and gravity conditions, and the perturbation of the massive star evolutionary processes by presence in a binary system.We highlight the role of the INTEGRAL mission in the discovery of many of the most interesting objects in the high mass X-ray binary class and its contribution in reviving the interest for these sources over the past two decades. We show how the INTEGRAL discoveries have not only contributed to significantly increase the number of high mass X-ray binaries known, thus advancing our understanding of the population as a whole, but also have opened new windows of investigation that stimulated the multi-wavelength approach nowadays common in most astrophysical research fields.We conclude the review by providing an overview of future facilities being planned from the X-ray to the very high energy domain that will hopefully help us in finding an answer to the many questions left open after more than 18 years of INTEGRAL scientific observations., Published by Elsevier Science, Amsterdam [u.a.]

We present a study of timing properties of the accreting pulsar 2S 1417-624 observed during its 2018 outburst, based on Swift/BAT, Fermi/GBM, Insight-HXMT and NICER observations. We report a dramatic change of the pulse profiles with luminosity. The morphology of the profile in the range 0.2-10.0keV switches from double to triple peaks at $\sim2.5$ $\rm \times 10^{37}{\it D}_{10}^2\ erg\ s^{-1}$ and from triple to quadruple peaks at $\sim7$ $\rm \times 10^{37}{\it D}_{10}^2\ erg\ s^{-1}$. The profile at high energies (25-100keV) shows significant evolutions as well. We explain this phenomenon according to existing theoretical models. We argue that the first change is related to the transition from the sub to the super-critical accretion regime, while the second to the transition of the accretion disc from the gas-dominated to the radiation pressure-dominated state. Considering the spin-up as well due to the accretion torque, this interpretation allows to estimate the magnetic field self-consistently at $\sim7\times 10^{12}$G., 7 pages, 4 figures, 1 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs) are X-ray binary systems with a supergiant companion and likely a neutron star, which show a fast ($\sim 10^3$ s) and high variability with a dynamic range up to $10^{5-6}$. Given their extreme properties, they are considered among the most valuable laboratories to test accretion models. Recently, the orbital parameters of a member of this class, IGR J08408-4503, were obtained from optical observations. We used this information, together with X-ray observations from previous publications and new results from X-ray and optical data collected by INTEGRAL and presented in this work, to study the accretion mechanisms at work in IGR J08408-4503. We found that the high eccentricity of the compact object orbit and the large size of the donor star imply Roche lobe overflow (RLO) around the periastron. It is also likely that a fraction of the outer layers of the photosphere of the donor star are lost from the Lagrangian point $L_2$ during the periastron passages. On the basis of these findings, we discuss the flaring variability of IGR J08408-4503 assuming the presence of an accretion disc. We point out that IGR J08408-4503 may not be the only SFXT with an accretion disc fueled by RLO. These findings open a new scenario for accretion mechanisms in SFXTs, since most of them have so far been based on the assumption of spherically symmetric accretion., Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

In this paper we present the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission - eXTP. eXTP is a space science mission designed to study fundamental physics under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. The mission aims at determining the equation of state of matter at supra-nuclear density, measuring effects of QED, and understanding the dynamics of matter in strong-field gravity. In addition to investigating fundamental physics, eXTP will be a very powerful observatory for astrophysics that will provide observations of unprecedented quality on a variety of galactic and extragalactic objects. In particular, its wide field monitoring capabilities will be highly instrumental to detect the electro-magnetic counterparts of gravitational wave sources. A0538-66 is a Be/X-ray binary (Be/XRB) hosting a 69 ms pulsar. It emitted bright X-ray outbursts with peak luminosity up to $\sim 10^{39}$ erg/s during the first years after its discovery in 1977. Since then, it was always seen in quiescence or during outbursts with $L_x \lesssim 4 \times 10^{37}$ erg/s. In 2018 we carried out XMM-Newton observations of A0538-66 during three consecutive orbits when the pulsar was close to periastron. In the first two observations we discovered a remarkable variability, with flares of typical durations between $\sim$2-50 s and peak luminosities up to $\sim 4\times 10^{38}$ erg/s (0.2-10 keV). Between the flares the luminosity was $\sim 2\times 10^{35}$ erg/s. The flares were absent in the third observation, during which A0538-66 had a steady luminosity of $2\times 10^{34}$ erg/s. In all observations, the X-ray spectra consist of a softer component, well described by an absorbed power law with photon index $\Gamma_1\approx 2-4$ and $N_H\approx 10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$, plus a harder power-law component ($\Gamma_2\approx 0-0.5$) dominating above $\sim$2 keV. The softer component shows larger flux variations than the harder one, and a moderate hardening correlated with the luminosity. The fast flaring activity seen in these observations was never observed before in A0538-66, nor, to our best knowledge, in other Be/XRBs. We explore the possibility that during our observations the source was accreting in a regime of nearly spherically symmetric inflow. In this case, an atmosphere can form around the neutron star magnetosphere and the observed variability can be explained by transitions between the accretion and supersonic propeller regimes., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We study the long-term evolution of the centroid energy of cyclotron lines - often referered to as Cyclotron Resonance Scattering Features (CRSF) - in Her X-1, Vela X-1 and Cen X-3, using survey observations of the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) onboard Swift. We find a significant decrease of the fundamental CRSF energy in Her X-1 and the first harmonic line energy in Vela X-1, since the launch of Swift in 2004 and until 2010 and 2012, respectively.In both sources the decreases stopped at some time, with a quite stable centroid energy thereafter. Unlike in Her X-1 and Vela X-1, the CRSF energy in Cen X-3 does not show a long-term decrease. It is observed not to change for at least the past 14 years. The long-term variation of the line energy is a direct way to investigate the magnetic field structure in the polar regions of pulsars. Our results may stimulate the development of theoretical models, especially regarding to how the accreted mass accumulates in the accretion mound or how the magnetic field distorts around the polar cap., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

AX J0049.4-7323 is a Be/X-ray binary that shows an unusual and poorly understood optical variability that consists of periodic and bright optical outbursts, simultaneous with X-ray outbursts, characterised by a highly asymmetric profile. The periodicity of the outbursts is thought to correspond to the orbital period of the neutron star. To understand the behaviour shown by this source, we performed the first multi-wavelength monitoring campaign during the periastron passage of December 2017. The monitoring lasted for ~37 days and consisted of X-ray, near-ultraviolet, and optical data from the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, the optical I band from the OGLE survey, and spectroscopic observations of the H-alpha line performed with the 3.9 m Anglo-Australian Telescope. These observations revealed AX J0049.4-7323 during an anomalous outburst having remarkably different properties compared to the previous ones. In the I band, it showed a longer rise timescale (~60 days instead of 1-5 days) and a longer decay timescale. At the peak of the outburst, it showed a sudden increase in luminosity in the I band, corresponding to the onset of the X-ray outburst. The monitoring of the H-alpha emission line showed a fast and highly variable profile composed of three peaks with variable reciprocal brightness. We interpreted these results as a circumstellar disc warped by tidal interactions with the neutron star in a high eccentricity orbit during its periastron passage. The fast jump in optical luminosity at the peak of the outburst and the previous asymmetric outbursts might be caused by the reprocessing of the X-ray photons in the circumstellar disc or the tidal displacement of a large amount of material from the circumstellar disc or the outer layers of the donor star during the periastron passage of the neutron star, which led to an increase in size of the region emitting in the I band., Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We analyzed RXTE/PCA observations of the bursting pulsar GRO J1744-28 during its two outbursts in 1995-1997. We have found a significant transition, i.e., a sharp change, of both spectral and timing properties around a flux of $\rm 10^{-8}\ ergs\ cm^{-2}\ s^{-1}$ (3-30 keV), which corresponds to a luminosity of 2--8$\rm \times 10^{37}\ ergs\ s^{-1}$ for a distance of 4--8 kpc. We define the faint (bright) state when the flux is smaller (larger) than this threshold. In the faint state, the spectral hardness increases significantly with the increasing flux, while remaining almost constant in the bright state. In addition, we find that the pulsed fraction is positively related to both the flux and the energy (, 15 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The estimate of the magnetospheric radius in a disk-fed neutron star X-ray binary is a long standing problem in high energy Astrophysics. We review the magnetospheric radius calculations in the so-called magnetically threaded disk model, comparing the simplified approach originally proposed by Ghosh & Lamb (1979) with the revised version proposed by Wang (1987), Wang (1995), and Wang (1997). We show that for a given set of fixed parameters (assuming also a comparable screening factor of the neutron star magnetic field by the currents induced on the disk surface) the revised magnetically threaded disk model predicts a magnetospheric radius that is significantly smaller than that derived from the Ghosh & Lamb (1979) treatment. For a fixed value of the neutron star magnetic field and a wide range of mass accretion rates, the inclusion of a large inclination angle between the neutron star rotation and magnetic field axes ($��$$\gtrsim$60 deg) leads to a further decrease of the magnetospheric radius. To illustrate the relevance of these calculations, we consider, as an example, the case of the transitional pulsars. During the so-called "high mode" of their sub-luminous accretion disk state, these sources have shown X-ray pulsations interpreted as due to accretion at an unprecedented low luminosity level compared to other neutron stars in X-ray binaries. In the context of the magnetic threaded disk model, we show that accretion at luminosities of $\sim$10$^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (and thus accretion-driven X-ray pulsations) can be more easily explained when the prescription of the magnetospheric radius provided by Wang (1997) is used. This avoids the need of invoking very strong propeller outflows in the transitional pulsars, as proposed in other literature works., Accepted for publication in A&A

We present the first extensive radio to gamma-ray observations of a fast-rising blue optical transient (FBOT), AT2018cow, over its first ~100 days. AT2018cow rose over a few days to a peak luminosity $L_{pk}\sim4\times 10^{44}$ erg/s exceeding those of superluminous supernovae (SNe), before declining as $\propto t^{-2}$. Initial spectra at $\lesssim 15$ days were mostly featureless and indicated large expansion velocities v~0.1c and temperatures reaching 30000 K. Later spectra revealed a persistent optically-thick photosphere and the emergence of H and He emission features with v~sim 4000 km/s with no evidence for ejecta cooling. Our broad-band monitoring revealed a hard X-ray spectral component at $E\ge 10$ keV, in addition to luminous and highly variable soft X-rays, with properties unprecedented among astronomical transients. An abrupt change in the X-ray decay rate and variability appears to accompany the change in optical spectral properties. AT2018cow showed bright radio emission consistent with the interaction of a blastwave with $v_{sh}$~0.1c with a dense environment ($\dot M\sim10^{-3}-10^{-4}\,M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$ for $v_w=1000$ km\s). While these properties exclude Ni-powered transients, our multi-wavelength analysis instead indicates that AT2018cow harbored a "central engine", either a compact object (magnetar or black hole) or an embedded internal shock produced by interaction with a compact, dense circumstellar medium. The engine released $\sim10^{50}-10^{51.5}$ erg over $\sim10^3-10^5$ s and resides within low-mass fast-moving material with equatorial-polar density asymmetry ($M_{ej,fast}\lesssim0.3\,\rm{M_{\odot}}$). Successful SNe from low-mass H-rich stars (like electron-capture SNe) or failed explosions from blue supergiants satisfy these constraints. Intermediate-mass black-holes are disfavored by the large environmental density probed by the radio observations., Comment: 26 pages + tables. Submitted

A previous study of the X-ray luminosity function of the X-ray sources in the field of the Draco dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy indicated the presence of a population of unknown X-ray sources in the soft energy range of 0.5-2 keV. In 2015, Draco dSph was observed again in twenty-six deep XMM-Newton, observations providing an opportunity for a new study of the yet unclassified sources. We apply the classification criteria presented in our previous multi-wavelength study of the X-ray sources of the Draco dSph to the sources detected in the combined 2009 and 2015 XMM-Newton data set. These criteria are based on X-ray studies and properties of the optical, near-infrared, and mid-infrared counterparts and allows us to distinguish background active galactic nuclei~(AGNs) and galaxies from other types of X-ray sources. We present the classification of X-ray sources, for which the counterpart is identified as a stellar object based on our criteria from multi-wavelength data. We identify three new symbiotic stars in the Draco dSph with X-ray luminosities between $\sim$3.5$\times10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and 5.5$\times10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The X-ray spectral analysis shows that two of the classified symbiotic stars are $\beta$-type. This is the first identification of this class of symbiotic stars in a nearby galaxy. Eight sources are classified as Galactic M dwarfs in the field of the Draco dSph. The distances of these M dwarfs are between$\sim$140-800 pc, their X-ray luminosities are between $10^{28}-10^{29}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and the logarithmic ratio of X-ray to bolometric luminosity, log$(\frac{L_\text{X}}{L_\text{bol}})$, is between $-3.4$ to $-2.1$. The multiple observations allowed us to investigate flare activity of the M dwarfs. Observed hard X-ray spectra of intermediate polars are determined mainly by the accretion flow velocity at the white dwarf surface, which is normally close to the free-fall velocity. This allows to estimate the white dwarf masses as the white dwarf mass-radius relation M-R and the expected free-fall velocities at the surface are well known. This method is widely used, however, derived white dwarf masses M can be systematically underestimated because the accretion flow is stopped at and re-accelerates from the magnetospheric boundary R_m, and therefore, its velocity at the surface will be lower than free-fall.To avoid this problem we computed a two-parameter set of model hard X-ray spectra, which allows to constrain a degenerate M - R_m dependence. On the other hand, previous works showed that power spectra of accreting X-ray pulsars and intermediate polars exhibit breaks at the frequencies corresponding to the Keplerian frequencies at the magnetospheric boundary. Therefore, the break frequency \nu_b in an intermediate polar power spectrum gives another relation in the M - R_m plane. The intersection of the two dependences allows, therefore, to determine simultaneously the white dwarf mass and the magnetospheric radius. To verify the method we analyzed the archival Suzaku observation of EX Hya obtaining M /M_sun= 0.73 \pm 0.06 and R_ m / R = 2.6 \pm 0.4 consistent with the values determined by other authors. Subsequently, we applied the same method to a recent NuSTAR observation of another intermediate polar GK~Per performed during an outburst and found M/M_sun = 0.86 \pm 0.02 and R_ m / R = 2.8 \pm 0.2. The long duration observations of GK Per in quiescence performed by Swift/BAT and INTEGRAL observatories indicate increase of magnetosphere radius R_m at lower accretion rates., Comment: 12 pages, 17 figures, submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics

Symbiotic stars are a heterogeneous class of interacting binaries. Among them, RT Cru has been classified as prototype of a subclass that is characterised by hard X-ray spectra extending past ~20 keV. We analyse ~8.6 Ms of archival INTEGRAL data collected in the period 2003-2014, ~140 ks of Swift/XRT data, and a Suzaku observation of 39 ks, to study the spectral X-ray emission and investigate the nature of the compact object. Based on the 2MASS photometry, we estimate the distance to the source of 1.2-2.4 kpc. The X-ray spectrum obtained with Swift/XRT, JEM-X, IBIS/ISGRI, and Suzaku data is well fitted by a cooling flow model modified by an absorber that fully covers the source and two partial covering absorbers. Assuming that the hard X-ray emission of RT Cru originates from an optically thin boundary layer around a non-magnetic white dwarf, we estimated a mass of the WD of about 1.2 M_Sun. The mass accretion rate obtained for this source might be too high for the optically thin boundary layer scenario. Therefore we investigate other plausible scenarios to model its hard X-ray emission. We show that, alternatively, the observed X-ray spectrum can be explained with the X-ray emission from the post-shock region above the polar caps of a magnetised white dwarf with mass ~0.9-1.1 M_Sun., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. 6 pages

We report on the Swift monitoring of the candidate supergiant fast X-ray transient (SFXT) IGR J16418−4532, for which both orbital and spin periods are known (approx. 3.7 d and approx.1250 s, respectively). Our observations, for a total of approx. 43 ks, span over three orbital periods and represent the most intense and complete sampling of the light curve of this source with a sensitive X-ray instrument. With this unique set of observations, we can address the nature of this transient. By applying the clumpy wind model for blue supergiants to the observed X-ray light curve, and assuming a circular orbit, the X-ray emission from this source can be explained in terms of the accretion from a spherically symmetric clumpy wind, composed of clumps with different masses, ranging from approx. 5 × 10(exp 16) to 10(exp 21) g. Our data suggest, based on the X-ray behaviour, that this is an intermediate SFXT.

We performed a systematic analysis of all INTEGRAL observations from 2003 to 2009 of 14 Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXTs), implying a net exposure time of about 30Ms. For each source we obtained lightcurves and spectra (3-100keV), discovering several new outbursts. We discuss the X-ray behaviour of SFXTs emerging from our analysis in the framework of the clumpy wind accretion mechanism we proposed (Ducci et al. 2009). We discuss the effect of X-ray photoionization on accretion in close binary systems like IGRJ16479-4514 and IGRJ17544-2619. We show that, because of X-ray photoionization, there is a high probability of formation of an accretion disk from capture of angular momentum in IGRJ16479-4514, and we suggest that the formation of transient accretion disks could be responsible of part of the flaring activity in SFXTs with narrow orbits. We also propose an alternative way to explain the origin of flares with peculiar shapes observed in our analysis applying the model of Lamb et al. (1977), which is based on the accretion via Rayleigh-Taylor instability, and was originally proposed to explain type II bursts.

We exploited the high sensitivity of the INTEGRAL IBIS/ISGRI instrument to study the persistent hard X-ray emission of the soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 1900+14, based on ~11.6 Ms of archival data. The 22-150 keV INTEGRAL spectrum can be well fit by a power law with photon index 1.9 +/- 0.3 and flux F_x = (1.11 +/- 0.17)E-11 erg/cm^2/s (20-100 keV). A comparison with the 20-100 keV flux measured in 1997 with BeppoSAX, and possibly associated with SGR 1900+14, shows a luminosity decrease by a factor of ~5. The slope of the power law above 20 keV is consistent within the uncertainties with that of SGR 1806-20, the other persistent soft gamma-ray repeater for which a hard X-ray emission extending up to 150 keV has been reported., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. 4 pages

The galaxy NGC1512 is interacting with the smaller galaxy NGC1510 and shows a peculiar morphology, characterised by two extended arms immersed in an HI disc whose size is about four times larger than the optical diameter of NGC1512. For the first time we performed a deep X-ray observation of the galaxies NGC1512 and NGC1510 with XMM-Newton to gain information on the population of X-ray sources and diffuse emission in a system of interacting galaxies. We identified and classified the sources detected in the XMM-Newton field of view by means of spectral analysis, hardness-ratios calculated with a Bayesian method, X-ray variability, and cross-correlations with catalogues in optical, infrared, and radio wavelengths. We also made use of archival Swift (X-ray) and Australia Telescope Compact Array (radio) data to better constrain the nature of the sources detected with XMM-Newton. We detected 106 sources in the energy range of 0.2-12 keV, out of which 15 are located within the D_25 regions of NGC1512 and NGC1510 and at least six sources coincide with the extended arms. We identified and classified six background objects and six foreground stars. We discussed the nature of a source within the D_25 ellipse of NGC1512, whose properties indicate a quasi-stellar object or an intermediate ultra-luminous X-ray source. Taking into account the contribution of low-mass X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei, the number of high-mass X-ray binaries detected within the D_25 region of NGC1512 is consistent with the star formation rate obtained in previous works based on radio, infrared optical, and UV wavelengths. We detected diffuse X-ray emission from the interior region of NGC1512 with a plasma temperature of kT=0.68(0.31-0.87) keV and a 0.3-10 keV X-ray luminosity of 1.3E38 erg/s, after correcting for unresolved discrete sources., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics. 20 pages. In the past fifteen years a new generation of X-ray satellites led to the discovery of a subclass of high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) with supergiant companions and a peculiar transient behaviour: supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs). We calculate the expected number of Galactic SFXTs for the first time, using two different statistical approaches and two sets of data based on Swift and INTEGRAL surveys, with the aim to determine how common the SFXT phenomenon really is. We find that the expected number of SFXTs in the Galaxy is about 37(+53, -22) which shows that SFXTs constitute a large portion of X-ray binaries with supergiant companions in the Galaxy. We compare our estimate with the expected number of Galactic HMXBs predicted from observations and evolutionary models and discuss the implications for the nature of SFXTs., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics. 5 pages

We report on the Swift/X-ray Telescope (XRT) monitoring of the field of view around the candidate supergiant fast X-ray transient (SFXT) IGR J17354-3255, which is positionally associated with the AGILE/GRID gamma-ray transient AGL J1734-3310. Our observations, which cover 11 days for a total on-source exposure of about 24 ks, span 1.2 orbital periods (P_orb=8.4474 d) and are the first sensitive monitoring of this source in the soft X-rays. These new data allow us to exploit the timing variability properties of the sources in the field to unambiguously identify the soft X-ray counterpart of IGR J17354-3255. The soft X-ray light curve shows a moderate orbital modulation and a dip. We investigated the nature of the dip by comparing the X-ray light curve with the prediction of the Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion theory, assuming both spherical and nonspherical symmetry of the outflow from the donor star. We found that the dip cannot be explained with the X-ray orbital modulation. We propose that an eclipse or the onset of a gated mechanism is the most likely explanation for the observed light curve., Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics. 9 pages

We present a review of the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXT) Project, a systematic investigation of the properties of SFXTs with a strategy that combines Swift monitoring programs with outburst follow-up observations. This strategy has quickly tripled the available sets of broad-band data of SFXT outbursts, and gathered a wealth of out-of-outburst data, which have led us to a broad-band spectral characterization, an assessment of the fraction of the time these sources spend in each phase, and their duty cycle of inactivity. We present some new observational results obtained through our outburst follow-ups, as fitting examples of the exceptional capabilities of Swift in catching bright flares and monitor them panchromatically., Comment: Accepted for publication in Advances in Space Research. Aims. We present the results of the analysis of five XMM-Newton observations of the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph). The aim of the work is the study of the X-ray population in the field of the Draco dSph.Methods. We classified the sources on the basis of spectral analysis, hardness ratios, X-ray-to-optical flux ratio, X-ray variability, and cross-correlation with available catalogues in X-ray, optical, infrared, and radio wavelengths.Results. We detected 70 X-ray sources in the field of the Draco dSph in the energy range of 0.2 − 12 keV and classified 18 AGNs, 9 galaxies and galaxy candidates, 6 sources as foreground stars, 4 low-mass X-ray binary candidates, 1 symbiotic star, and 2 binary system candidates. We also identified 9 sources as hard X-ray sources in the field of the galaxy. We derived the X-ray luminosity function of X-ray sources in the Draco dSph in the 2 − 10 keV and 0.5 − 2 keV energy bands. Using the X-ray luminosity function in the energy range of 0.5 − 2 keV, we estimate that ~10 X-ray sources are objects in the Draco dSph. We have also estimated the dark matter halo mass that would be needed to keep the low-mass X-ray binaries gravitationally bound to the galaxy.

After the occurrence of the type cIIb SN 2011dh in the nearby spiral galaxy M 51 numerous observations were performed with different telescopes in various bands ranging from radio to gamma-rays. We analysed the XMM-Newton and Swift observations taken 3 to 30 days after the SN explosion to study the X-ray spectrum of SN 2011dh. We extracted spectra from the XMM-Newton observations, which took place ~7 and 11 days after the SN. In addition, we created integrated Swift/XRT spectra of 3 to 10 days and 11 to 30 days. The spectra are well fitted with a power-law spectrum absorbed with Galactic foreground absorption. In addition, we find a harder spectral component in the first XMM-Newton spectrum taken at t ~ 7 d. This component is also detected in the first Swift spectrum of t = 3 - 10 d. While the persistent power-law component can be explained as inverse Compton emission from radio synchrotron emitting electrons, the harder component is most likely bremsstrahlung emission from the shocked stellar wind. Therefore, the harder X-ray emission that fades away after t ~ 10 d can be interpreted as emission from the shocked circumstellar wind of SN 2011dh., Comment: Accepted for publication as a Research Note in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Several glitches have been observed in young, isolated radio pulsars, while a clear detection in accretion-powered X-ray pulsars is still lacking. We use the Pizzochero snowplow model for pulsar glitches as well as starquake models to determine for the first time the expected properties of glitches in accreting pulsars and their observability. Since some accreting pulsars show accretion-induced long-term spin-up, we also investigate the possibility that anti-glitches occur in these stars. We find that glitches caused by quakes in a slow accreting neutron star are very rare and their detection extremely unlikely. On the contrary, glitches and anti-glitches caused by a transfer of angular momentum between the superfluid neutron vortices and the non-superfluid component may take place in accreting pulsars more often. We calculate the maximum jump in angular velocity of an anti-glitch and we find that it is expected to be about 1E-5 - 1E-4 rad/s. We also note that since accreting pulsars usually have rotational angular velocities lower than those of isolated glitching pulsars, both glitches and anti-glitches are expected to have long rise and recovery timescales compared to isolated glitching pulsars, with glitches and anti-glitches appearing as a simple step in angular velocity. Among accreting pulsars, we find that GX 1+4 is the best candidate for the detection of glitches with currently operating X-ray instruments and future missions such as the proposed Large Observatory for X-ray Timing (LOFT)., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. 6 pages. IGR J18483-0311 is a supergiant fast X-ray transient whose compact object is located in a wide (18.5 d) and eccentric (e~0.4) orbit, which shows sporadic outbursts that reach X-ray luminosities of ~1e36 erg/s. We investigated the timing properties of IGR J18483-0311 and studied the spectra during bright outbursts by fitting physical models based on thermal and bulk Comptonization processes for accreting compact objects. We analysed archival INTEGRAL data collected in the period 2003-2010, focusing on the observations with IGR J18483-0311 in outburst. We searched for pulsations in the INTEGRAL light curves of each outburst. We took advantage of the broadband observing capability of INTEGRAL for the spectral analysis. We observed 15 outbursts, seven of which we report here for the first time. This data analysis almost doubles the statistics of flares of this binary system detected by INTEGRAL. A refined timing analysis did not reveal a significant periodicity in the INTEGRAL observation where a ~21s pulsation was previously detected. Neither did we find evidence for pulsations in the X-ray light curve of an archival XMM-Newton observation of IGR J18483-0311. In the light of these results the nature of the compact object in IGR J18483-0311 is unclear. The broadband X-ray spectrum of IGR J18483-0311 in outburst is well fitted by a thermal and bulk Comptonization model of blackbody seed photons by the infalling material in the accretion column of a neutron star. We present the results obtained from the analysis of three XMM-Newton observations of M83. The aims of the paper are studying the X-ray source populations in M83 and calculating the X-ray luminosity functions of X-ray binaries for different regions of the galaxy. We detected 189 sources in the XMM-Newton field of view in the energy range of 0.2-12 keV. We constrained their nature by means of spectral analysis, hardness ratios, studies of the X-ray variability, and cross-correlations with catalogues in X-ray, optical, infrared, and radio wavelengths. We identified and classified 12 background objects, five foreground stars, two X-ray binaries, one supernova remnant candidate, one super-soft source candidate and one ultra-luminous X-ray source. Among these sources, we classified for the first time three active galactic nuclei (AGN) candidates. We derived X-ray luminosity functions of the X-ray sources in M83 in the 2-10 keV energy range, within and outside the D_25 ellipse, correcting the total X-ray luminosity function for incompleteness and subtracting the AGN contribution. The X-ray luminosity function inside the D_25 ellipse is consistent with that previously observed by Chandra. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test shows that the X-ray luminosity function of the outer disc and the AGN luminosity distribution are uncorrelated with a probability of about 99.3%. We also found that the X-ray sources detected outside the D_25 ellipse and the uniform spatial distribution of AGNs are spatially uncorrelated with a significance of 99.5%. INTEGRAL monitoring of the Galactic Plane in the last 5 years revealed a new subclass of High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs), the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXTs). They display flares lasting from minutes to hours, with peak luminosity of 1E36-1E37 erg/s and a frequent long term flaring activity reaching an X-ray luminosity of 1E33-1E34 erg/s, as recently detected by the Swift satellite. The quiescent level is around 1E32 erg/s. We performed a systematic re-analysis of archival INTEGRAL data of four SFXTs: IGRJ16479-4514, XTEJ1739-302, IGRJ17544-2619, IGRJ18410-0535. This led to the discovery of previously unnoticed outbursts from IGRJ16479-4514 and IGRJ17544-2619. We discuss these results in the framework of the different structure of the supergiant wind proposed to explain the outburst from this new class of sources., Poster paper.
