International audience; The Crystal program for quantum-mechanical simulations of materials has been bridging the realm of molecular quantum chemistry to the realm of solid state physics for many years, since its first public version released back in 1988. This peculiarity stems from the use of atom-centered basis functions within a linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) approach and from the corresponding efficiency in the evaluation of the exact Fock exchange series. In particular, this has led to the implementation of a rich variety of hybrid density functional approximations since 1998. Nowadays, it is acknowledged by a broad community of solid state chemists and physicists that the inclusion of a fraction of Fock exchange in the exchange-correlation potential of the density functional theory is key to a better description of many properties of materials (electronic, magnetic, mechanical, spintronic, lattice-dynamical, etc.). Here, the main developments made to the program in the last five years (i.e., since the previous release, Crystal17) are presented and some of their most noteworthy applications reviewed.

Following the development in recent years of progressively accurate approximations to the exchange-correlation functional, the use of density functional theory (DFT) methods to examine increasingly large and complex systems has grown, in particular for solids and other condensed mat- ter systems. However the cost of these calculations is high, often requiring the use of specialist HPC facilities. As such, for the purpose of large scale high-throughput screening of material properties, a hierarchy of simplified DFT methods has been proposed that allows the comparatively rapid calcu- lation of the electronic structure of large systems, and we have recently extended this scheme to the solid state (sol-3c) [J. Phys. Chem. 151, 121101 (2019)]. Here, we analyze the applicability and scaling of the new sol-3c DFT methods to molecules and crystals composed of light-elements, such as small proteins and model DNA-helices. Furthermore, the calculation of the electronic electronic structure of large to very large porous systems, such as metal-organic frameworks and inorganic nanoparticles, is discussed. The new composite methods have been implemented in the CRYSTAL17 code, which efficiently implements hybrid functionals and enables routine application of the new methods to large scale calculations of such materials with excellent performance even on small-scale computing resources.

The chemical versatility and modular nature of Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs) make them unique hybrid inorganic–organic materials for several important applications. From a computational point of view, ab initio modeling of MOFs is a challenging and demanding task, in particular, when the system reaches the size of gigantic MOFs as MIL-100 and MIL-101 (where MIL stands for Materials Institute Lavoisier) with several thousand atoms in the unit cell. Here, we show how such complex systems can be successfully tackled by a recently proposed class of composite electronic structure methods revised for solid-state calculations. These methods rely on HF/density functional theory hybrid functionals (i.e., PBEsol0 and HSEsol) combined with a double-zeta quality basis set. They are augmented with semi-classical corrections to take into account dispersive interactions (D3 scheme) and the basis set superposition error (gCP). The resulting methodologies, dubbed “sol-3c,” are cost-effective yet reach the hybrid functional accuracy. Here, sol-3c methods are effectively applied to predict the structural, vibrational, electronic, and adsorption properties of some of the most common MOFs. Calculations are feasible even on very large MOFs containing more than 2500 atoms in the unit cell as MIL-100 and MIL-101 with reasonable computing resources. We propose to use our composite methods for the routine in silico screening of MOFs targeting properties beyond plain structural features.

Nanocomposites comprising metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) embedded in a polymeric matrix are promising carriers for drug delivery applications. While understanding the chemical and physical transformations of MOFs during the release of confined drug molecules is challenging, this is central to devising better ways for controlled release of therapeutic agents. Herein we demonstrate the efficacy of synchrotron microspectroscopy to track the in situ release of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) anticancer drug molecules from a drug@MOF/polymer composite (5-FU@HKUST-1/polyurethane). Using experimental time-resolved infrared spectra jointly with newly developed density functional theory calculations, we reveal the detailed dynamics of vibrational motions underpinning the dissociation of 5-FU bound to the framework of HKUST-1 upon water exposure. We discover that HKUST-1 creates hydrophilic channels within the hydrophobic polyurethane matrix hence helping to tune drug release rate. The synergy between a hydrophilic MOF with a hydrophobic polymer can be harnessed to engineer a tunable nanocomposite that alleviates the unwanted burst effect commonly encountered in drug delivery.

A hierarchy of simplified Hartree-Fock (HF), density functional theory (DFT) methods, and their combinations has been recently proposed for the fast electronic structure computation of large systems. The covered methods are a minimal basis set Hartree–Fock (HF-3c), a small basis set global hybrid functional (PBEh-3c), and its screened exchange variant (HSE-3c), all augmented with semiclassical correction potentials. Here, we extend their applicability to inorganic covalent and ionic solids as well as layered materials. The new methods have been dubbed HFsol-3c, PBEsol0-3c, and HSEsol-3c, respectively, to indicate their parent functional as well as the correction potentials. They have been implemented in the CRYSTAL code to enable routine application for molecular as well as solid materials. We validate the new methods on diverse sets of solid state benchmarks that cover more than 90 solids ranging from covalent, ionic, semi-ionic, layered, and molecular crystals. While we focus on structural and energetic properties, we also test bandgaps, vibrational frequencies, elastic constants, and dielectric and piezoelectric tensors. HSEsol-3c appears to be most promising with mean absolute error for cohesive energies and unit cell volumes of molecular crystals of 1.5 kcal/mol and 2.8%, respectively. Lattice parameters of inorganic solids deviate by 3% from the references, and vibrational frequencies of α-quartz have standard deviations of 10 cm−1. Overall, this shows an accuracy competitive to converged basis set dispersion corrected DFT with a substantial increase in computational efficiency.

Herein we employed high-resolution spectroscopic techniques in combination with periodic ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations to establish the different polarization processes for a porous copper-based MOF, termed HKUST-1. We used alternating current measurements to determine its dielectric response between 4 Hz and 1.5 MHz where orientational polarization is predominant, while synchrotron infrared (IR) reflectance was used to probe the far-IR, mid-IR, and near-IR dielectric response across the 1.2 THz to 150 THz range (ca. 40 - 5000 cm^-1) where vibrational and optical polarizations are principal contributors to its dielectric permittivity. We demonstrate the role of pressure on the evolution of broadband dielectric response, where THz vibrations reveal distinct blue and red shifts of phonon modes from structural deformation of the copper paddle-wheel and the organic linker, respectively. We also investigated the effect of temperature on dielectric constants in the MHz region pertinent to microelectronics, to study temperature-dependent dielectric losses via dissipation in an alternating electric field. The DFT calculations offer insights into the physical mechanisms responsible for dielectric transitions observed in the experiments and enable us to explain the frequency shifts phenomenon detected under pressure. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of nanoporous crystalline materials with very high structural tunability. They possess a very low dielectric permittivity ϵr due to their porosity and hence are favorable for piezoelectric energy harvesting. Even though they have huge potential as piezoelectric materials, a detailed analysis and structure-property relationship of the piezoelectric properties in MOFs are lacking so far. This work focuses on a class of cubic non-centrosymmetric MOFs, namely, zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) to rationalize how the variation of different building blocks of the structure, that is, metal node and linker substituents affect the piezoelectric constants. The piezoelectric tensor for the ZIFs is computed from ab initio theoretical methods. From the calculations, we analyze the different contributions to the final piezoelectric constant d14, namely, the clamped ion (e140) and the internal strain (e14int) contributions and the mechanical properties. For the studied ZIFs, even though e14 (e140 + e14int) is similar for all ZIFs, the resultant piezoelectric coefficient d14 calculated from piezoelectric constant e14 and elastic compliance constant s44 varies significantly among the different structures. It is the largest for CdIF-1 (Cd2+ and -CH3 linker substituent). This is mainly due to the higher elasticity or flexibility of the framework. Interestingly, the magnitude of d14 for CdIF-1 is higher than II-VI inorganic piezoelectrics and of a similar magnitude as the quintessential piezoelectric polymer polyvinylidene fluoride.
