A recent experimental work has reported an excess of the non-linear conductivity in the charge density wave (CDW) sliding mode of the quasi one-dimensional compound (TaSe4)2I, when a magnetic field is applied co-linearly to the electric field [Gooth et al., Nature 575, 315 (2019)]. This result has opened a conceptual approach, where the CDW gap in (TaSe4)2I is opened between Weyl fermions of opposite chirality with the assumption that this compound is a Weyl semi-metal in its undistorted high temperature phase. We report measurements in the sliding state of (TaSe4)2I performed in similar conditions. We have found no increase in the magnetoconductivity. In our attempts for understanding this unsettling discrepancy, we stress the specific nature of the Peierls transition in (TaSe4)2I and the strong electron-phonon coupling present in this compound. Given the lack of further evidence, we think that it is premature to assert that (TaSe4)2I is an axionic insulator., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

The magnetic properties of the cobaltite {\BCAO}, a good realization of the quasi two-dimensional frustrated honeycomb-lattice system with strong planar anisotropy, have been reinvestigated by means of spherical neutron polarimetry with CRYOPAD. From accurate measurements of polarization matrices both on elastic and inelastic contributions as a function of the scattering vector {\bf{Q}}, we have been able to determine the low-temperature magnetic structure of {\BCAO} and reveal its puzzling in-plane spin dynamics. Surprisingly, the ground-state structure (described by an incommensurate propagation vector ${\bf{k}}_{1}=(k_{x}, 0, k_{z}$), with $k_{x}=0.270{\pm}0.005$ and $k_{z} \approx -1.31$) appears to be a quasi-collinear structure, and not a simple helix, as previously determined. In addition, our results have revealed the existence of a non-negligible out-of-plane moment component $ \approx 0.25{\mu}_{B}$/Co$^{2+}$, representing about 10\% of the in-plane component, as demonstrated by the presence of finite off-diagonal elements $P_{yz}$ and $P_{zy}$ of the polarization matrix, both on elastic and inelastic magnetic contributions. Despite a clear evidence of the existence of a slightly inelastic contribution of structural origin superimposed to the magnetic excitations at the scattering vectors ${\bf{Q}}=(0.27, 0, 3.1)$ and ${\bf{Q}}=(0.73, 0, 0.8)$ (energy transfer ${\Delta}E \approx 2.3$ meV), no strong inelastic nuclear-magnetic interference terms could be detected so far, meaning that the nuclear and magnetic degrees of freedom have very weak cross-correlations. The strong inelastic $P_{yz}$ and $P_{zy}$ matrix elements can be understood by assuming that the magnetic excitations in {\BCAO} are spin waves associated with trivial anisotropic precessions of the magnetic moments involved in the canted incommensurate structure., Comment: 43 pages, 16 figures

The long-time thermal relaxation of (TMTTF)$_2$Br, Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ and Sr$_2$Ca$_{12}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ single crystals at temperatures below 1 K and magnetic field up to 10 T is investigated. The data allow us to determine the relaxation time spectrum of the low energy excitations caused by the charge-density wave (CDW) or spin-density wave (SDW). The relaxation time is mainly determined by a thermal activated process for all investigated materials. The maximum relaxation time increases with increasing magnetic field. The distribution of barrier heights corresponds to one or two Gaussian functions. The doping of Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_{x}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ with Ca leads to a drastic shift of the relaxation time spectrum to longer time. The maximum relaxation time changes from 50 s (x = 0) to 3000 s (x = 12) at 0.1 K and 10 T. The observed thermal relaxation at x=12 clearly indicates the formation of the SDW ground state at low temperatures.

We report on sliding Charge Density Wave (CDW) in the quasi two-dimensional TbTe$_3$ system probed by coherent x-ray diffraction combined with {\it in-situ} transport measurements. We show that the non-Ohmic conductivity in TbTe$_3$ is made possible thanks to a strong distortion of the CDW. Our diffraction experiment versus current shows first that the CDW remains undeformed below the threshold current I$_S$ and then suddenly rotates and reorders by motion above threshold. Contrary to quasi-one dimensional systems, the CDW in TbTe$_3$ does not display any phase shifts below I$_S$ and tolerates only slow spatial variations of the phase above. This is a first observation of CDW behavior in the bulk in a quasi-two dimensional system allowing collective transport of charges at room temperature., Comment: submitted to PRB

'Forbidden' Bragg reflections of iron orthoborate Fe3BO6 were studied theoretically and experimentally in the vicinity of the iron K edge. Their energy spectra are explained as resulting from the interference of x-rays scattered from two inequivalent crystallographic sites occupied by iron ions. This particular structure property gives rise to complex azimuthal dependences of the reflection intensities in the pre-edge region as they result from the interplay of site specific dipole-quadrupole and quadrupole-quadrupole resonant scattering. Also evidenced is an isotropic character of the absorption spectrum. Self-absorption correction to the diffraction data, as well as possible contributions of thermal vibrations and magnetic order, are discussed. Particular care is given to extracting clean spectra from the data, and it is demonstrated that excellent results can be obtained even from measurements that appear corrupted by several effects such as poor crystal quality and multiple scattering., Comment: 12 pages

We report the first direct observation of the influence of high magnetic fields on the Jahn-Teller (JT) transition in TbVO4. Contrary to spectroscopic and magnetic methods, X-ray diffraction directly measures the JT distortion; the splitting between the (311)/(131) and (202)/(022) pairs of Bragg reflections is proportional to the order parameter. Our experimental results are compared to mean field calculations, taking into account all possible orientations of the grains relative to the applied field, and qualitative agreement is obtained., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Insulating La1.95Sr0.05CuO4 shares with superconducting cuprates the same Fincher-Burke-like spin excitations, which usually are observed in itinerant antiferromagnets. The local spectral function satisfies omega/T scaling above ~16 K for this incommensurate insulating cuprate. Together with previous results in commensurate insulating and incommensurate superconducting cuprates, these results further support the general scaling prediction for square-lattice quantum spin S=1/2 systems. The width of incommensurate peaks in La1.95Sr0.05CuO4 scales to a similar finite value as at optimal doping, strongly suggesting that they are similarly distant from a quantum critical point. They might both be limited to a finite correlation length by the partial spin-glass freezing., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We have studied the spin anisotropy in spin-singlet ground state compounds and the magnetic chirality, as measured by inelastic polarized neutron scattering techniques, in the chain-sublattice of Sr14Cu24O41. In-plane and out of plane magnetic fluctuations are measured to be anisotropic and further discussed in the light of the current hypothesis of spin-orbit coupling. We show that under appropriate conditions of magnetic field and neutron polarization, the \textit{trivial} magnetic chirality selects only one of the Zeeman splitted triplet states for scattering and erases the other one that posses opposite helicity. Our analysis pertains to previous studies on dynamical magnetic chirality and chiral critical exponents, where the ground state is chiral itself, the so-called \textit{non-trivial} dynamical magnetic chirality. As it turns out, both \textit{trivial} and \textit{non-trivial} dynamical magnetic chirality have identical selection rules for inelastic polarized neutron scattering experiments and it is not at all evident that they can be distinguished in a paramagnetic compound., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Phys. Here we show that the low temperature phase of magnetite is associated with an effective, although fractional, ordering of the charge. Evidence and a quantitative evaluation of the atomic charges are achieved by using resonant x-ray diffraction (RXD) experiments whose results are further analyzed with the help of ab initio calculations of the scattering factors involved. By confirming the results obtained from X-ray crystallography we have shown that RXD is able to probe quantitatively the electronic structure in very complex oxides, whose importance covers a wide domain of applications., Comment: 4 pages 4 figures, accepted for publication in PRL

In conventional spin glasses, magnetic interaction is not strongly anisotropic and the entire spin system is believed to be frozen below the spin-glass transition temperature. In La2Cu0.94Li0.06O4, for which the in-plane exchange interaction dominates the interplane one, only a fraction of spins with antiferromagnetic correlations extending to neighboring planes become spin-glass. The remaining spins with only in-plane antiferromagnetic correlations remain spin-liquid at low temperature. Such a novel partial spin freezing out of a two-dimensional spin-liquid observed in this cold neutron scattering study is likely due to a delicate balance between disorder and quantum fluctuations in the quasi-two dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg system., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm for critical phenomena is spectacularly successful whenever the critical temperature is finite and all fluctuation modes, with characteristic energies much smaller than the thermal energy, obey classical statistics. In zero-temperature quantum critical phenomena, classical thermal fluctuations are replaced by zero-point quantum fluctuations and quantum-mechanical generalization of the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm has been a central topic in condensed-matter physics. In this neutron-scattering study on spin fluctuations near the quantum critical point induced by hole-doping in La2CuO4 (Li doping concentration from 0.04 to 0.1), the phase boundary for quantum crossover expected from the generalized quantum theory for critical phenomena was observed for the first time. We show that in mixed-valence 3d transition metal oxides undergoing a structural transition, the low temperature phase results from an effective ordering of the charge. This arrangement and the quantitative evaluation of the atomic charges are determined by using resonant x-ray scattering experiments further analyzed with the help of ab initio calculations of the corresponding scattering factors. Anomalous x-ray diffraction studies show that the charge ordering in $\alpha^\prime$-NaV$_2$O$_5$ is of zig-zag type in all vanadium ladders. We have found that there are two models of the stacking of layers along \emph{c-}direction, each of them consisting of 2 degenerated patterns, and that the experimental data is well reproduced if the 2 patterns appears simultaneously. Using high-resolution X-ray scattering techniques, we measure the variation, q(x), of the position in reciprocal space of the CDW satellite, in the sliding state, along the length of NbSe_3 whiskers. We show that structural defects and intentionally X-ray radiation-damaged regions increase locally the CDW pinning force, and induce CDW phase distortions which are consistent with those observed near contacts. Using the semi-microscopic model from Brazovskii describing the normal-condensed carrier conversion, with spatially varying parameters, we account for the experimental spatial dependence of the CDW phase gradient near both types of defects.

We report high-resolution neutron inelastic scattering experiments on the spin excitations of NaV2O5. Below Tc, two branches associated with distinct energy gaps are identified. From the dispersion and intensity of the spin excitation modes, we deduce the precise zig-zag charge distribution on the ladder rungs and the corresponding charge order (about 0.6). Below about 150 K, the spin arrangement in the chain arrays of Sr14Cu24O41 is shown to develop in two dimensions (2D). Both the correlations and the dispersion of the observed elementary excitations agree well with a model of interacting dimers. Along the chains, the intra- and inter-dimer distances are equal to 2 and about 3 times the distance (c) between neighboring Cu ions. While the intra-dimer coupling is J about 10 meV, the inter-dimer couplings along and between the chains are of comparable strenght, J// about -1.1 meV and Jperp about 1.7 meV, respectively. This remarkable 2D arrangement satisfies the formal Cu valence of the undoped compound. Our data suggest also that it is associated with a relative sliding of one chain with respect to the next one, which, as T decreases, develops in the chain direction. We have studied magnetic excitations in the dimerized spin-Peierls phase of CuGeO3, by high resolution inelastic neutron scattering. We measured the well-defined spin triplet dispersive mode which is gapped throughout the whole Brillouin zone. We also observed that this mode is separated by an unexpected second gap of order 2 meV from a continuum of magnetic excitations extending to higher energy. The first gap (or 'triplet gap') and its associated dispersive mode is due to the breaking of a singlet dimer into a delocalized triplet. We propose that the second gap (or 'solitonic gap') and the continuum correspond to dissociation of that triplet into two unbound spin-1/2 solitons that are separated by a dimerized region of arbitrary length., Comment: 7 pages, 3 Postscript figures, REVTeX 2.0
