Carbon dioxide (CO2) accounts for 80% of the greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. One of the several ways to mitigate CO2 emissions is through afforestation, which prevents catastrophic environmental consequences. The mean average emission per tourist in the Canary Islands on their way to the islands is 0.48 Tn. Like most urban cities, the island of Gran Canaria faces the problem of CO2 emissions due to anthropogenic and human activities. Vegetation coverage significantly influences the distribution of temperature. The correlation between Land Surface Temperature (LST) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) of Gran Canaria, using satellite images from Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2, revealed a strong inverse relationship within all land use types, with an R2 value of 0.39. Land suitability analysis is a prerequisite for optimum utilization of available land resources. This study developed a suitability map for afforestation based on land use land cover, topographic, meteorologic, and socio-economic factors. Eight factors, including distance from settlements, land use, distance from the road, distance from water, elevation, slope, precipitation, and temperature, were employed according to previous studies, expert consultation, and land suitability mapping experience. After the criteria decision and data acquisition, maps of each criterion were created and transformed using the Suitability Modeler of ArcGIS Pro. The current study results show that 87% of the total area is suitable for afforestation and reforestation projects in Gran Canaria. Instead of using reactive methods to lessen the effects, the study recommends a proactive approach to climate adaptation through nature-based solutions. The study is part of an umbrella project of the Canary Islands and Spain in general, which considers the contributions of local and institutional stakeholders at different stages of the project. The next stage will be to design a forest afforestation and reforestation project, considering the kind of tree species needed, the methods required to implement it, and the management guidelines about the initial years of installation and growth of the new trees. The most crucial technical choice is which forest species to choose, as it will determine the success of the reforestation effort. The new revegetated space's ability to sequester carbon dioxide will primarily rely on the productivity of the land used for forest reforestation, the species chosen, and the introduced planting density.

In many countries, including China, traditional one-dimensional performance appraisal has led local governments to spend more on economic construction and less on human capital and public services. In 2013, China decided to abandon the traditional bias of performance appraisal. This study aims to analyze the effect of multidimensional performance appraisal on the local government expenditure structure in China. The study collected panel data from 31 provincial administrative regions in China during 2007–2018 for empirical analysis. By assigning different weights to economic-based performance appraisal pressure, livelihood-based performance appraisal pressure, and ecological-based performance appraisal pressure, the study observed the effects of performance appraisal criteria on local government expenditure structure. The results show that: local governments place more emphasis on tasks with higher relative incentive intensity and allocate more expenditures to them; the correlation between tasks affects the proportion of expenditures on related tasks; the basic principle of local government officials in balancing the expenditure structure is to maximize their own utility. They give priority to spending on tasks with high marginal revenue. In addition, this paper also discusses the causes and mechanisms of distortion in local government spending structure. Finally, the paper puts forward corresponding policy recommendations, which provide new ideas for multidimensional performance assessment of local governments.

AbstractThe capture and utilization of CO2 from industrial off-gases to produce commodity chemicals has the potential to make an important contribution to the transition to a circular economy. Formate, and its conjugate formic acid, is a potential sustainable platform chemical that can be produced from CO2. Electrochemical reduction of CO2 to formate is a promising route, but biocatalysis with formate dehydrogenase (FDH) as biocatalyst may offer advantages for industrial implementation such as mild conditions, high product selectivity, and less expensive down-stream processing. Here, we investigated the potential of a metal-independent Thiobacillus FDH (TsFDH) as a biocatalyst for the production of formate from CO2-rich industrial offgases. An excellent stability was demonstrated, also in the presence of potential off-gas impurities. A formate titer of 14 mM could be achieved at pH 6.5 and 37 °C, with an initial specific productivity of 0.37 mmol g−1FDH h−1. TsFDH compares favorably to metal-dependent FDHs with respect to stability, O2-sensitivity and activity at low pH values, but unfavorably in terms of CO2 reduction activity, hampering its potential as industrial biocatalyst. Its prognosis is uncertain and may result in a prolonged treatment that could extend throughout the entire lifespan of the patient. Antipsychotic drugs are characterized by a high interindividual variability when considering therapeutic effect and emergence of adverse effects. Such interindividual variability is thought to be associated primarily with pharmacokinetic matters.Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the economic impact of the application of the 5-Step Precision Medicine model (5SPM), an approach based on the pharmacogenetic analysis of the primary genes involved in the metabolism of the therapy for each patient, restructuring treatment as necessary.Patients and Methods: One hundred eighty-eight psychiatry patients were analysed for single nucleotide polymorphisms on genes CYP1A2, CYP2B6, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP2D6, CYP3A5 and ABCB1. Information on patients’ diagnosis, pharmacotherapy, and hospitalizations was collected.Results: We achieved a cost–benefit ratio of 3.31– 3.59 with a reduction of direct cost (hospitalizations plus pharmacotherapy) with a reduction of total cost in 67% of the patients who underwent the clinical intervention.Conclusion: A rational Precision Medicine-based approach to psychiatric patients could result in a reduction on number of drugs required to control exacerbations, and the underlying pathologies, reducing the risk of adverse effects and improving adherence to treatment, leading to a potential decrease in direct costs. This methodology has been shown to be cost-dominant and, being based on a pharmacogenetic analysis, it has a lifelong nature, as the data obtained can be applied to other medical disciplines.Keywords: pharmacogenetics, pharmacoeconomics, psychotic disorders, cytochrome P-450, antipsychotics

There is currently no comprehensive feed consumption database using a harmonised feed classification system. This means there is a lack of accurate information on the individual amount of feed consumed daily by farmed and companion animals. Such a database would support exposure assessments of feed. This report provides a complete overview of the main feed databases, their structure, and how feed materials are classified. It highlights their limits and potential and reports any differences from FoodEx2. A proposal for future updates of FoodEx2 and the development of a comprehensive feed consumption model database is provided. The proposed model database is based on three information areas represented by three Excel sheets. These represent Animal, Feed, and Consumption, allowing the determination of animal dietary exposure. A proof of concept of the developed model database was carried out by performing two case studies focused on genetically modified feed and feed contaminants. For genetically modified feed, a reduced animal dietary exposure was obtained compared to estimations reported in the scientific opinions and obtained using Excel calculators proposed by EFSA. For the contaminants in feed, differences were limited, resulting in slightly higher or lower exposure values. Weaknesses and possible mitigations are also addressed, and recommendations are made for a comprehensive feed consumption database. These include recommendations establishing an EU classification system in which the main features and items reported in the European Catalogue of Feed Materials are harmonised with FoodEx2. It is also recommended that real‐life animal consumption data are collected by the feed industry, animal nutritionists, breeders, and farmers, along with the collaboration of stakeholders. BackgroundThe cost of hospital care for adults with gastroparesis (GP) is increasing. Our objective was to evaluate the cost of hospital care for children with GP.MethodsUsing the Pediatric Health Information System, we selected hospitalizations with a diagnosis of GP (ICD-9 536.3), dyspepsia and other specified disorders of function of stomach (DYS, 536.8) and unspecified functional disorder of stomach (UFD, 536.9) from 2004 to 2013. We recorded dates of hospitalization, demographics, costs, and length of stay (LOS).Key resultsFrom 2004 to 2013, 4015 patients were admitted for GP (54.2% female, median age 8 years). Total cost of hospitalization for GP increased 5.8 fold from $6 185 390 to $35 654 075 (p = 0.0001). Cost per hospitalization did not change. Cost of initial hospitalization was highest in patients 0-5 years and lowest in patients 16-21 years (p < 0.0001). Number of hospitalizations each year for GP increased from 252 to 1310 (p < 0.0001) and unique patients hospitalized increased from 174 to 723 (p < 0.0001). Number of hospitalizations and unique patients for DYS/UFD also increased (p < 0.0001). LOS for GP did not change with time. Females and younger GP patients had more repeat hospitalizations (p < 0.0001, p < 0.0001).Conclusions & inferencesThe financial burden of hospitalization for pediatric GP has increased dramatically from 2004 to 2013, driven by a rise in number of hospitalizations and unique patients hospitalized each year. Cost and LOS per hospitalization remain stable. Unlike in adults, hospitalizations for DYS/UFD have also increased, suggesting that the increase in hospitalizations for GP is not secondary to changing diagnostic practices.

We analyzed morphometric and molecular variation among 8 populations of Peromyscus zarhynchus grouped into 5 pooled samples representing separate physiographic regions across the range of this species in Chiapas, Mexico, and western Guatemala. Mitochondrial sequence data identify 2 well-supported and reciprocally monophyletic clades, separating all Chiapas specimens from those in Guatemala. These 2 clades group as a strongly supported monophyletic lineage aligned with other members of the Peromyscus mexicanus species group. The Chiapas clade is further subdivided into 4 subclades: 1) samples from the western part of the state, 2) specimens from a single locality in Northern Chiapas, 3) all central localities, and 4) those from a single locality in Eastern Chiapas. The molecular distance in the mitochondrial cytochrome-b gene (Cytb) between the 2 major clades is relatively low (mean p-distance = 3.66%); those between the 4 Chiapas subclades are even less (mean p-distance 2.73%). Multivariate analyses of external and craniodental morphometric variables also distinguish 2 major groups, separating Guatemalan from Chiapas samples but with the latter also divided into 2 subgroups, one that segregates the Northern Chiapas sample from those distributed elsewhere in that state. The Guatemalan and Chiapas samples differ in both cranial size and shape variables. The second-level separation of samples from within Chiapas (northern versus all others) is interpreted to result from the combination of local adaptation to distinct physiographic regions and geographic isolation generated by patches of suitable habitat. We describe the Guatemalan samples as a distinct species based on their molecular and morphological uniqueness, and argue that P. zarhynchus itself is divided into definable subspecies, with the nominotypical form P. z. zarhynchus, restricted to the vicinity of its type locality (Tumbalá) in Northern Chiapas, and P. z. cristobalensis with type locality of San Cristobal, over the remainder of the species range in the state.

Cutlassfishes, also known as hairtails, include multiple predatory fishes of the family Trichiuridae. They constitute a top marine fish commodity globally, yet the knowledge about their composition and intraspecific genetic structures is still limited. Trichiurus japonicus accounts for a major amount in the northwest Pacific fishery. Previous studies based on mitochondrial DNA markers reported incongruences in its population structure, hence prompting the need for high-resolution markers and avoiding possible shortcomings in its management. Here we genotyped ten novel de novo-assembled transcriptome-derived microsatellite markers on a total of 150 samples across five major fishing grounds (encompassing latitudes 22–39°N). These markers presented a high number of alleles and heterozygosity compared to other marine fishes, corresponding to the large effective population size of ~20,000 per location and cohort differentiation. Population structuring analyses suggested T. japonicus to be a homogenous well-mixed population. This configuration is likely attributed to the majority of its effective population migrates across locations, and the absence of oceanographic barriers at the continental shelves. Qingdao with reportedly high ocean productivity could be a genetic pseudosink based on the high heterozygosity and migratory preference. Moreover, the results of sign tests suggest that T. japonicus experienced a recent bottleneck likely concurrent with historical glaciation events. Further, we demonstrated satisfactory cross-amplifications of our markers on several congeners, indicating a great promise to use these markers to study the population genetics of trichiurids. Together, our findings will serve as an essential groundwork for enhancing resource conservation and management of cutlassfishes.

The yellowstripe scad, Selaroides leptolepis (Carangidae), is an important fish commodity in the Tropical Western Pacific (TWP). It has a latitudinal Pacific range from south of Japan down to northern Australia, with the highest concentration in Southeast Asia. However, its TWP fishing grounds have long been a hotspot of unsustainable exploitations, thus threatening the remaining wild populations. Despite the species’ commercial significance, there is limited understanding of its genetic structure and diversity. Herein, the genetic structure of S. leptolepis was examined using mitochondrial COI and CytB sequences. Both markers denoted significant genetic structuring based on high overall FST values. Hierarchical analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA), maximum likelihood (ML) phylogenetic trees, and median-joining (MJ) haplotype networks strongly supported the occurrence of two allopatrically distributed lineages. These comprised of a widespread Asian lineage and an isolated Australian lineage. Within-lineage distances were low (K2P < 1%) whereas across-lineage distances were remarkably high (K2P > 6%), already comparable to that of interspecific carangid divergences. Haplotype sequence memberships, high genetic variations, and the geographic correlation suggested that the Australian lineage was a putative cryptic species. Historical demographic inferences also revealed that the species experienced rapid expansion commencing on the late Pleistocene, most likely during the end of the Last Glacial Maximum (∼20,000 years ago). The present study encouraged the application of lineage-specific management efforts, as the lineages are experiencing different evolutionary pressures. Overall, accurate knowledge of the species’ genetic distribution is fundamental in protecting its diversity and assuring stock sustainability.

Background: Several endovascular or surgical treatments have been proposed to treat total chronic occlusions of the iliac bifurcation. Nowadays, endovascular options are considered as a first choice because of the decreased perioperative morbidity–mortality. Nevertheless, unexpected intraoperative events may occur, such as dissection or rupture of the iliac artery. We report a case of inadvertent bilateral false-lumen kissing-stent positioning, rescued with stent extensions maneuvered using image fusion guidance. Case presentation: A 60-year-old male patient was referred to our department because of a severe bilateral claudication, 8 months after placement of an iliac kissing stent for common iliac artery occlusion. A computed tomography angiography (CTA) was performed, showing a bilateral dissection of the aorto-iliac bifurcation at the proximal part of the stents, which were placed into the false lumen; the distal part was placed into the true lumens (TL). Lower-limb perfusion was maintained by inferior mesenteric and hypogastric arteries. Because a CTA performed before the first endovascular intervention showed no dissection of the aortic bifurcation, the flaps were probably created during previous interventions. An endovascular revision was planned. After bilateral femoral access, the proximal part of the flap was pierced with a needle-based re-entry device, deployed under three-dimensional cone-beam CT image overlay with bi-planar fluoroscopy. The lumen patency was then restored with stent extensions up to the renal ostia. The final angiography showed stent patency. No complication occurred during the intervention. The patient was dismissed the following day, with good arterial femoral pulse and no further complications. An ultrasound color Doppler performed 1 month after the intervention showed satisfactory blood flow of both iliac and femoral arteries as well as a good flow in the lower limbs. Conclusions: The integration of modern 3D image guidance and novel endovascular devices allows for the management of adverse events using a minimally invasive approach.

Endovascular approach is the first-choice treatment in patients suffering from aortoiliac occlusions. Nevertheless, standard endoluminal revascularization fails in treating occlusions in about 20% (1) of cases. Thus, subintimal revascularization can be a solution, but it fails in 25% (2) of cases as well. In the last decades, different devices have been created, in order to ease the cross back into the true lumen, when standard subintimal revascularization does not work or risks to occlude important collateral vessels. Herein, we revise the currently available re-entry devices and their application in the aortoiliac occlusive pathology.
