The VUV photoionisation and photofragmentation of cyclo-alanine-alanine (cAA) has been studied in a joint experimental and theoretical work. The photoelectron spectrum and the photoelectronphotoion coincidence (PEPICO) measurements, which enable control of the energy being deposited, combined with quantum chemistry calculations, provide direct insight into the cAA molecular stability after photoionisation. The analysis of the ion-neutral coincidence experiments with the molecular dynamics simulations and the exploration of the potential energy surface allows a complete identification of the fragmentation pathways. It has been found that the fragmentation always start with the ring opening through the C–C bond cleavage, followed by release of neutral moieties CO or HNCO.

Photoelectron-photoion(s) coincidence, PEPICO, experiments with synchrotron radiation have become one of the most powerful tools to investigate dissociative photoionization thanks to their selectivity. In this paper their application to the study of molecular species of biological interest in the gas phase is reviewed. Some applications of PEPICO to the study of potential radiosensitizers, amino acids and small peptides and opportunities offered by the advent of novel methods for the production of beams of these molecules are discussed.

The photoionisation and photofragmentation of the two cyclic dipetides cyclo(alanyl-glycine) cGA and cyclo(glycyl-glycine) cGG, have been studied combining experiments and simulations.

The valence ionization of uracil and mixed water-uracil clusters has been studied experimentally and by ab initio calculations. In both measurements, the spectrum onset shows a red shift with respect to the uracil molecule, with the mixed cluster characterized by peculiar features unexplained by the sum of independent contributions of the water or uracil aggregation. To interpret and assign all the contributions, we performed a series of multi-level calculations, starting from an exploration of several cluster structures using automated conformer-search algorithms based on a tight-binding approach. Ionization energies have been assessed on smaller clusters via a comparison between accurate wavefunction-based approaches and cost-effective DFT-based simulations, the latter of which were applied to clusters up to 12 uracil and 36 water molecules. The results confirm that (i) the bottom-up approach based on a multilevel method [Mattioli et al. Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 23, 1859 (2021)] to the structure of neutral clusters of unknown experimental composition converges to precise structure-property relationships and (ii) the coexistence of pure and mixed clusters in the water-uracil samples. A natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis performed on a subset of clusters highlighted the special role of H-bonds in the formation of the aggregates. The NBO analysis yields second-order perturbative energy between the H-bond donor and acceptor orbitals correlated with the calculated ionization energies. This sheds light on the role of the oxygen lone-pairs of the uracil CO group in the formation of strong H-bonds, with a stronger directionality in mixed clusters, giving a quantitative explanation for the formation of core-shell structures. Nitroimidazoles are a class of chemicals with a remarkable broad spectrum of applications from the production of explosives to the use as radiosensitizers in radiotherapy. The understanding of thedynamics of their fragmentation induced by ionizing sources is of fundamental interest. The goal of this work is to theoretically investigate the kinetic competition between the two most important decomposition channels of 2, 4 and 5-Nitroimidazole cations: the NO and NO2 losses. The calculated rate constants of the two processes are in very good agreement with the experimental Photoelectron-Photoion Coincidence (PEPICO) branching ratio. This study solves the intriguing and theoretically unexplained experimental observation that 2-Nitroimidazole, at variance with the other two regio-isomers is a source for only NO at low energies (

The near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra of indole, 2,3-dihydro-7-azaindole, and 3-formylindole in the gas phase have been measured at the carbon and nitrogen K-edges. The spectral features have been interpreted based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations within the transition potential (TP) scheme, which is accurate enough for a general description of the measured C 1s NEXAFS spectra as well as for the assignment of the most relevant features. For the nitrogen K-edge, the agreement between experimental data and theoretical spectra calculated with TP-DFT was not quite satisfactory. This discrepancy was mainly attributed to the many-body effects associated with the excitation of the core electron, which are better described using the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) with the range separated hybrid functional CAM-B3LYP. An assignment of the measured N 1s NEXAFS spectral features has been proposed together with a complete description of the observed resonances. Intense transitions from core levels to unoccupied antibonding π* states as well as several transitions with mixed-valence/Rydberg or pure Rydberg character have been observed in the C and N K-edge spectra of all investigated indoles.

The exothermic hydrogen transfer from H

Dipeptides, the prototype peptides, exist in both linear (l-) and cyclo (c-) structures. Since the first mass spectrometry experiments, it has been observed that some l-structures may turn into the cyclo ones, likely via a temperature-induced process. In this work, combining several different experimental techniques (mass spectrometry, infrared and Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis) with tight-binding and ab initio simulations, we provide evidence that, in the case of L -phenylalanyl- L -alanine, an irreversible cyclization mechanism, catalyzed by water and driven by temperature, occurs in the condensed phase. This process can be considered as a very efficient strategy to improve dipeptide stability by turning the comparatively fragile linear structure into the robust and more stable cyclic one. This mechanism may have played a role in prebiotic chemistry and can be further exploited in the preparation of nanomaterials and drugs.

The fabrication of enzyme-based biosensors has received much attention for their selectivity and sensitivity. In particular, laccase-based biosensors have attracted a lot of interest for their capacity to detect highly toxic molecules in the environment, becoming essential tools in the fields of white biotechnology and green chemistry. The manufacturing of a new, metal-free, laccase-based biosensor with unprecedented reuse and storage capabilities has been achieved in this work through the application of the electrospray deposition (ESD) methodology as the enzyme immobilization technique. Electrospray ionization (ESI) has been used for ambient soft-landing of laccase enzymes on a carbon substrate, employing sustainable chemistry. This study shows how the ESD technique can be successfully exploited for the fabrication of a new promising environment-friendly electrochemical amperometric laccase-based biosensor, with storage capability up to two months without any particular care and reuse performance up to 63 measurements on the same electrode just prepared and 20 measurements on the one-year-old electrode subjected to redeposition. The laccase-based biosensor has been tested for catechol detection in the linear range 2-100 μM, with a limit of detection of 1.7 μM, without interference from chrome, cadmium, arsenic, and zinc and without any memory effects.

We investigate for the first time the gas-phase lowest-lying valence, Rydberg and ionic electronic states of 2,4,6-trichloroanisole (TCA) using synchrotron radiation for photoabsorption and photoelectron spectroscopy. The high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption spectrum, in the 4.0-10.8 eV energy-range, has been measured with absolute photoabsorption cross-sections and, thanks to novel ab initio calculations of the vertical energies and oscillator strengths, an assignment of the electronic transitions is comprehensively reported. The assignment of weak vibrational features in the absorption bands of TCA reveal that the ring and C-Cl stretching modes are mainly active. In the photoelectron spectrum the lowest 18 ionic bands, between 8 and 30 eV, have been observed and assigned using the first set of calculated valence and outer valence vertical ionisation energies. Finally, the measured absolute photoabsorption cross sections have also been used to estimate the photolysis lifetime of TCA in the upper stratosphere (20-50 km). The properties of mixed water-uracil nanoaggregates have been probed by core electron-photoemission measurements to investigate supramolecular assembly in the gas phase driven by weak interactions. The interpretation of the measurements has been assisted by multilevel atomistic simulations, based on semi-empirical tight-binding and DFT-based methods. Our protocol established a positive-feedback loop between experimental and computational techniques, which has enabled a sound and detailed atomistic description of such complex heterogeneous molecular aggregates. Among biomolecules, uracil offers interesting and generalized skeletal features; its structure encompasses an alternation of hydrophilic H-bond donor and acceptor sites and hydrophobic moieties, typical in biomolecular systems, that induces a supramolecular core-shell-like organization of the mixed clusters with a water core and an uracil shell. This structure is far from typical models of both solid-state hydration, with water molecules in defined positions, or liquid solvation, where disconnected uracil molecules are completely surrounded by water.

International audience; We propose to combine quantum chemical calculations, statistical mechanical methods, and photoionization and particle collision experiments to unravel the redistribution of internal energy of the furan cation and its dissociation pathways. This approach successfully reproduces the relative intensity of the different fragments as a function of the internal energy of the system in photoelectronphotoion coincidence experiments and the different mass spectra obtained when ions ranging from Ar + to Xe 25+ or electrons are used in collision experiments. It provides deep insights into the redistribution of the internal energy in the ionized molecule and its influence on the dissociation pathways and resulting charged fragments. The present pilot study demonstrates the efficiency of a statistical exchange of excitation energy among various degrees of freedom of the molecule and proves that the proposed approach is mature to be extended to more complex systems.

Methanol is one of the most abundant and ubiquitous molecules in the space. Its chemistry is fundamental to understand the molecular growing from prebiotic molecules, ions and radicals. In this work the reaction of labelled methanol CD3OH•+ radical cation, produced with different internal energies by monochromatic synchrotron radiation, with neutral CD3OH was studied. The dynamics of the main reaction channels were investigated by theoretical calculations. The results show how these processes can be considered suitable pathways for the formation of fundamental species as CH3O(H)H+, CH3O•, •CH2OH, CH2O which are potential precursors to prebiotic molecules.

The electronic energy levels of cyclo(glycine–phenylalanine), cyclo(tryptophan–tyrosine) and cyclo(tryptophan–tryptophan) dipeptides are investigated with a joint experimental and theoretical approach. Experimentally, valence photoelectron spectra in the gas phase are measured using VUV radiation. Theoretically, we first obtain low-energy conformers through an automated conformer–rotamer ensemble sampling scheme based on tight-binding simulations. Then, different first principles computational schemes are considered to simulate the spectra: Hartree–Fock (HF), density functional theory (DFT) within the B3LYP approximation, the quasi-particle GW correction, and the quantumchemistry CCSD method. Theory allows assignment of the main features of the spectra. A discussion on the role of electronic correlation is provided, by comparing computationally cheaper DFT scheme (and GW) results with the accurate CCSD method.

Superhydrogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been suggested to catalyze the formation of H2 in certain regions of space, but it remains unclear under which circumstances this mechanism is viable given the reduced carbon backbone stability of superhydrogenated PAHs. We report a laboratory study on the stability of the smallest pericondensed PAH, pyrene (C16H10+N , with N = 4, 6, and 16 additional H atoms), against photodestruction by single vacuum ultraviolet photons using the photoelectron–photoion coincidence technique. For N = 4, we observe a protective effect of hydrogenation against the loss of native hydrogens, in the form of an increase in the appearance energies of the and C16H8 + daughter ions compared to those reported for pristine pyrene (C16H10). No such effect is seen for N = 6 or 16, where the weakening effect of replacing aromatic bonds with aliphatic ones outweighs the buffering effect of the additional hydrogen atoms. The onset of fragmentation occurs at similar internal energies for N = 4 and 6, but is significantly lower for N = 16. In all three cases, H-loss and C m H n -loss (m ≥ 1, carbon backbone fragmentation) channels open at approximately the same energy. The branching fractions of the primary channels favor H-loss for N = 4, C m H n -loss for N = 16, and are roughly equal for the intermediate N = 6. We conclude that superhydrogenated pyrene is probably too small to support catalytic H2-formation, while trends in the current and previously reported data suggest that larger PAHs may serve as catalysts up to a certain level of hydrogenation.

It comprises nineteen contributions by scientists with leading expertise in complementary experimental and theoretical techniques to probe the dynamics on timescales spanning twenty order of magnitudes, from attoseconds to minutes and beyond, and for systems ranging in complexity from the smallest (diatomic) molecules to clusters and nanoparticles. A combined experimental and theoretical study shows how the interaction of VUV radiation with cyclo-(alanine-alanine), one of the 2,5-diketopiperazines (DKPs), produces reactive oxazolidinone intermediates. The theoretical simulations reveal that the interaction of these intermediates with other neutral and charged fragments, released in the molecular decomposition, leads either to the reconstruction of the cyclic dipeptide or to the formation of longer linear peptide chains. These results may explain how DKPs could have, on one hand, survived hostile chemical environments and, on the other, provided the seed for amino acid polymerization. The photodouble ionization of water at about 32 eV excess energy has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. In an energy and angular resolved photoelectron–photoelectron coincidence experiment, the two photoelectrons in unequal energy sharing (25 and 7 eV) condition, have been detected in a plane perpendicular to the propagation direction of the linearly polarized radiation. The measured angular distributions have been compared with, molecular orientation averaged, triple differential cross sections calculated with a recently developed theoretical model (Randazzo et al 2020 Phys. Rev. A 101 033407). The model uses separable products of orbitals as initial electronic state of the water molecule taken as a two-electron target and describes accurately the correlated two electron continuum. The combination of calculated cross sections corresponding to different dication states capture most of the measured features in terms of the evolution of both the shape and the intensity as a function of the faster electron direction which is set at 0°, 30° and 60° with respect to the polarization vector ε ⃗ of the incident radiation. A detailed analysis in terms of the different dication states as well as of the partial wave contributions to the electron pair wave function sheds light on the origin of such features.

The Auger spectrum of argon in the kinetic energy region (135-235 eV) has been measured using a non-monochromatic electron beam (incident energy from 313 to 2019 eV) at two ejection angles of 60 degrees and 90 degrees with a high resolution electrostatic analyzer. The electron impact energies of 313 and 323 eV have been used in order to disentangle the contribution of the ionization and decay of the 2s state. The systematic analysis of the measured spectra shows the dominance of the Coster-Kronig transitions from the 2s ionization in the energy region 135-159 eV and 208-235 eV, while the Auger transitions from the 2p ionization are dominant in the energy region 160-208 eV. The high resolution of the present work led to the observation of a certain number of new features in two energy regions 135-159 and 208-235 eV, respectively. Recent literature data on the cascade Auger processes and threshold formation of Ar2+ satellite states allow the assignment of some of them, while other have been left without assignments. The influence of the PCI effect on the line-shape, width and energy position of the features in the kinetic energy region 200-208 eV has been also investigated and the PCI shift versus excess energy above threshold compared with previous data and theoretical predictions.

The C, N and O 1s XPS spectra of uracil clusters in the gas phase have been measured. A new bottom-up approach, which relies on computational simulations starting from the crystallographic structure of uracil, has been adopted to interpret the measured spectra. This approach sheds light on the different molecular interactions (H-bond, π-stacking, dispersion interactions) at work in the cluster and provides a good understanding of the observed XPS chemical shifts with respect to the isolated molecule in terms of intramolecular and intermolecular screening occurring after the core–hole ionization. The proposed bottom-up approach, reasonably expensive in terms of computational resources, has been validated by finite-temperature molecular dynamics simulations of clusters composed of up to fifty molecules.

The photodouble ionization of the water molecule is studied at 20 eV excess energy in a combined experimental and theoretical investigation. In the experiments, two photoelectrons of equal kinetic energy are detected in coincidence after energy and angular selection. On the theoretical side, a generalized Sturmian function approach is implemented to describe accurately the correlated two-electron continuum, while separable products of Moccia orbitals [J. Chem. Phys. 40, 2164 (1964)JCPSA60021-960610.1063/1.1725489] are used for the initial electronic state of the water molecule. The theoretical triple-differential cross sections (TDCSs) are averaged over all possible molecular orientations in order to be compared with the experiments. The measured TDCSs display rich angular distributions that are in large part well reproduced by the adopted first-order treatment of the interaction with a two-active-electron target. Enzymes immobilisation represents a critical issue in the design of biosensors to achieve standardization as well as suitable analytical performances in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. In this work electrospray deposition (ESD) has been exploited as a novel technique for the immobilisation of laccase enzyme on carbon black modified screen-printed electrodes. The aim is to fabricate an amperometric biosensor for phenolic compound detection. The electrodes produced by ESD have been analysed by scanning electron microscopy and characterised electrochemically to prove that this immobilisation technique is suited to manufacture high performance biosensors. The results show that the laccase enzyme maintains its activity after undergoing the electrospray ionisation process and deposition and the fabricated biosensor has improved performances in terms of storage (up to 3 months at room temperature) and working (up to 25 measurements on the same electrode) stability. The laccase-based biosensor has been tested for phenolic compound detection, with catechol as target analyte, in the linear range 2.5–50 μM, with 2.0 μM limit of detection, without interference from lead, cadmium, atrazine, and paraoxon, and without matrix effect in drinking, surface, and wastewater.

Dihalomethanes XCH2Y (X and Y = F, Cl, Br, and I) are a class of compounds involved in several processes leading to the release of halogen atoms, ozone consumption, and aerosol particle formation. Neutral dihalomethanes have been largely studied, but chemical physics properties and processes involving their radical ions, like the pathways of their decomposition, have not been completely investigated. In this work the photodissociation dynamics of the ClCH2I molecule has been explored in the photon energy range 9-21 eV using both VUV rare gas discharge lamps and synchrotron radiation. The experiments show that, among the different fragment ions, CH2I+ and CH2Cl+, which correspond to the Cl- and I-losses, respectively, play a dominant role. The experimental ionization energy of ClCH2I and the appearance energies of the CH2I+ and CH2Cl+ ions are in agreement with the theoretical results obtained at the MP2/CCSD(T) level of theory. Computational investigations have been also performed to study the isomerization of geminal [ClCH2I]o+ into the iso-chloroiodomethane isomers: [CH2I-Cl]o+ and [CH2Cl-I]o+.

Photoelectron spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and electron–ion coincidence experiments combined with tunable synchrotron radiation have been used to study the decay and fragmentation of 2Cl-pyrimidine after Cl(2p), C(1s) and N(1s) excitations. The goal is to investigate how the state- and site-selected excitation and the chemical environment affect the fragmentation paths of the molecule and to make a comparison with fragmentation induced by direct valence ionization. It has been found that the site-selective inner shell excitation affects the branching ratio of the fragments, while the particular fragmentation channels of the cation are determined by the final state populated in the resonant decay of the core excited states. Effects of nuclear motion in the core excited states and the possible ultrafast molecular dissociation following the Cl(2p → σ *) core excitation are discussed.

Synopsis The electronic structure and the fragmentation dynamics of a series of isolated cyclic-dipeptides (cyclo-Ala-Ala; cyclo-Gly-Ala; cyclo-Gly-Gly) have been studied by mass spectrometry, photoemission and photoelectron-photoion coincidence spectroscopy.

The valence and core-level photoelectron spectra of gaseous indole, 2,3-dihydro-7-azaindole, and 3-formylindole have been investigated using VUV and soft X-ray radiation supported by both an ab initio electron propagator and density functional theory calculations. Three methods were used to calculate the outer valence band photoemission spectra: outer valence Green function, partial third order, and renormalized partial third order. While all gave an acceptable description of the valence spectra, the last method yielded very accurate agreement, especially for indole and 3-formylindole. The carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen is core-level spectra of these heterocycles were measured and assigned. The double ionization appearance potential for indole has been determined to be 21.8 +/- 0.2 eV by C is and N is Auger photoelectron spectroscopy. Theoretical analysis identifies the doubly ionized states as a band consisting of two overlapping singlet states and one triplet state with dominant configurations corresponding to holes in the two uppermost molecular orbitals. One of the singlet states and the triplet state can be described as consisting largely of a single configuration, but other doubly ionized states are heavily mixed by configuration interactions. This work provides full assignment of the relative binding energies of the core level features and an analysis of the electronic structure of substituted indoles in comparison with the parent indole.

Synopsis The main objective of this study is to determine the energy transfer occuring in ion-molecule collisions. In order to solve this problem, we followed two approaches; the first one by validating a purely experimental method and the second one by testing a new theoretical model M3C (Microcanonical Metropolis Monte Carlo).

The Kr M4,5-NN Auger transitions are studied in the kinetic energy region 24 - 59 eV by using non-monochromatic electron beam and a high resolution electrostatic analyzer. Among the sixty four features observed, fifty five are assigned, while nine stay unassigned. The post-collision interaction (PCI) effects in the M5-N1N1(1S0) and M5-N2,3N2,3(1S0) Auger peaks are studied as a function of electron incident energy approaching the M5 edge (95.04 eV). The PCI shifts are found to be well represented by an exponential function of the excess energy with exponents β = (-0.99±0.05 and -3.08±0.05) for the N2,3N2,3(1S0) and N1N1(1S0) peaks, respectively. The M2,3-M4,5N Coster-Kronig transitions are studied in kinetic energy region 65 - 110 eV and at incident energies from 120 to 2019 eV. Owing to a high resolution twelve well resolved satellites in the region bellow 90 eV are observed, while in the region 90 - 110 eV two broad features are assigned to the M2,3-M4,5N2,3 C-K peaks with intensity ratio (M3/M2 = 2.37) are observed. Comparison is made with available data from literature.

The ejected electron spectra between 25 and 56 eV kinetic energy in Ar have been measured at several electron impact energies. When the incident energy is above the Ar 2s ionization potential the peaks due to the L1-L2,3M1 and L1-L2,3M2,3 Coster-Kronig (CK) transitions are expected to occur in this region of kinetic energy, but we observe a series of other narrow structures that overlap and sometime dominate the spectrum due to the CK transitions. These features have been attributed to the autoionizing decay of inner valence doubly excited states to the Ar + ground state.

We present a synopsis of 90 references on the last trends in electrochemical laccase-based biosensors and highlight how forefront technologies have prompted the development of smarter biosensors boosting their applications in agro-environmental and biomedical fields. This review updates a previous one published by Rodriguez-Delgado and co-workers in Trends in Analytical Chemistry 74 (2015) 21–45 and covers the research advances over the period between 2015 and 2019. In particular, a general overview on laccase structure and function is reported emphasizing its electrochemistry features as suitable bioreceptor for electrochemical devices. Then, we describe how crosscutting technologies like nanotechnology, material science, and immobilisation strategies can help to enhance the analytical performances of laccase-based biosensors.

Hot-carriers, that is, charge carriers with an effective temperature higher than that of the lattice, may contribute to the high power conversion efficiency (PCE) shown by perovskite-based solar cells (PSCs), which are now competitive with silicon solar cells. Hot-carriers lose their excess energy in very short times, typically in a few picoseconds after excitation. For this reason, the carrier dynamics occurring on this time scale are extremely important in determining the participation of hot-carriers in the photovoltaic process. However, the stability of PSCs over time still remains an issue that calls for a solution. In this work, we demonstrate that the insertion of graphene flakes into the mesoscopic TiO2 scaffold leads to stable values of carrier temperature. In PSCs aged over 1 week, we indeed observe that in the graphene-free perovskite cells the carrier temperature decreases by about 500 K from 1800 to 1300 K, while the graphene-containing cell shows a reduction of less than 200 K after the same aging time delay. The stability of the carrier temperature reflects the stability of the perovskite nanocrystals embedded in the mesoporous graphene-TiO2 layer. Our results, based on femtosecond transient absorption measurements, show that the insertion of graphene can be beneficial for the design of stable PSCs with the aim of exploiting the hot-carrier contribution to the PCE of the PSCs.

Hydrogen migration in the glycine cation has been investigated using a combination of a short train of attosecond extreme ultraviolet pulses with few-optical-cycle near-infrared pulses. The yield of the photofragments produced has been measured as a function of pump–probe delay. These time-dependent measurements reveal the presence of a hydrogen migration process occurring in 48 fs. Previous mass spectrometric experiments and theoretical calculations have allowed us to identify the conformations and cation states involved in the process induced by the broad band extreme ultraviolet radiation.

The fragmentation of glycine (NH2CH2COOH) has been studied by photoelectron-photoion coincidence, PEPICO, experiments at 60 eV photon energy. Glycine practically fragments at the ionization threshold, with the charge being on the H2NCH2+ moiety, due to ejection of an electron from the nitrogen lone pair of the highest occupied molecular orbital. To observe the formation of the complementary cation COOH+ further energy is needed. The flexibility with respect to rotation about the C-C, C-N and C-O bonds makes glycine exist in the gas phase in several conformers of both Cs and C1 point group symmetry in the neutral as well as ion states. The ionization can lead to stabilization of some conformations, rearrangements and, last but not least, H migration between the two moieties. The results of these experiments prove the sensitivity of PEPICO to pin point all these processes.

Synchrotron radiation and synchrotron based spectroscopic techniques have found important applications in the study of isolated molecular species of biological interest. In this paper, some examples of spectroscopic and dynamic studies of amino acids and small peptides, nucleobases and pharmaceuticals are reviewed. Opportunities offered by the advent of new radiation sources combined with novel methods for the production of beams of these molecules are also discussed.

We provide experimental evidence for interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) in mixed rare gas dimers following resonant Auger decay. A velocity map imaging apparatus together with a cooled supersonic beam containing Ar2 and NeAr dimers was used to record the energy and angular distributions of electrons in coincidence with two mass selected ions following the excitation of a number of resonances converging to the Ar 2p3/2-1 threshold using synchrotron radiation. It is shown that the ICD process can be controlled by the choice of the partner atom in the dimer or of the resonance that triggers the resonant Auger decay

The C, N and O 1s excitation and ionization processes of 5X-uracil (X = F, Cl, Br, and I) were investigated using near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and X-ray photoemission (XPS) spectroscopies. This study aims at the fine assessment of the effects of the functionalization of uracil molecules by halogen atoms having different electronegativity and bound to the same molecular site. Two DFT-based approaches, which rely on different paradigms, have been used to simulate the experimental spectra and to assign the corresponding features. The analysis of the screening of the core holes of the different atoms via electronic charge density plots has turned out to be a useful tool to illustrate the competition between the partially aromatic and partially conjugate properties of this class of molecules.

Nitromidazoles are relevant compounds of multidisciplinary interest, and knowledge of their physical chemical parameters as well as their decomposition under photon irradiation is needed. Here we report an experimental and theoretical study of the mechanisms of VUV photo fragmentation of 2- and 4(5)-nitromidazoles, compounds used as radiosensitizers in conjunction with radiotherapy as well as high-energy density materials. Photoelectron photoion coincidence experiments, measurements of the appearance energies of the most important ionic fragments, density functional theory, and single-point coupled cluster calculations have been used to provide an overall insight into the energetics and structure of the different ionic/neutral products of the fragmentation processes. The results show that these compounds can be an efficient source of relevant CO, HCN, NO, and NO2 molecules and produce ions of particular astrophysical interest, like the isomers of azirinyl cation (m/z 40), predicted to exist in the interstellar medium, and protonated hydrogen cyanide (m/z 28).

The X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) of Ar-2 and ArNe dimers and small Ar clusters in the L-2,L-3 region (244-252 eV) of the Ar atom have been recorded using synchrotron light and a combination of coincidence methods and kinetic energy discrimination of energetic ions. The absorption peaks in the spectra of the dimers and clusters were found to be shifted and broadened relative to the peaks in the spectrum of the Ar atom. In order to unambiguously relate these chemical shifts to the electronic structure of the core excited states in dimers, we performed ab initio calculations of the XAS spectra. Implications of the results for the use of XAS as a structure determination method in large rare gas clusters are discussed.

Gold nanoparticles with an average diameter of 10 nm, functionalized by the dye molecule rhodamine B isothiocyanate, have been synthesized. The resulting material has been extensively characterized both chemically, to investigate the bonding between the dye molecules and the nanoparticles, and physically, to understand the details of the aggregation induced by interaction between dye molecules on different nanoparticles. The plasmonic response of the system has been further characterized by measurement and theoretical simulation of the static UV–Vis extinction spectra of the aggregates produced following different synthesis procedures. The model parameters used in the simulation gave further useful information on the aggregation and its relationship to the plasmonic response. Finally, we investigated the time dependence of the plasmonic effects of the nanoparticles and fluorescence of the dye molecule using an ultrafast pump–probe optical method. By modulating the quantity of dye molecules on the surface of the nanoparticles it was possible to exert fine control over the plasmonic response of nanoparticles., This is a preprint version of an article published in Journal of Colloid and Interface Science. [object Object]The fragmentation of the isolated 5-bromouracil (5BrU) molecule and pure and nano-hydrated 5BrU clusters induced by low energy C-12(4+) ions has been studied. A comparison indicates that the environment, on the one hand, protects the system against the complete break-up into small fragments, but, on the other hand, triggers 'new' pathways for fragmentation, for example the loss of the OH group. The most striking result is the observation of several series of hydrated fragments in the hydrated cluster case, with water molecules bound to hydrophilic sites of 5BrU. This highlights the strong interaction between 5BrU and water molecules and the blocking of specific fragmentation pathways, such as the loss of the BrC2H group for example.

Synopsis This work relies on complementary theoretical and experimental studies of the processes induced by ion-furan collisions. Results of the Molecular Dynamics simulations and exploration of the energy profiles combined with coincidence mass spectrometry provide complete picture of the fragmentation of furan dication.
