Abstract

The diffusion of monovacancies in gold has been studied by computer simulation. Multiple jumps have been found to play a central role in the atomic dynamics at high temperature, and have been shown to be responsible for an upward curvature in the Arrhenius plot of the diffusion coefficient. Appropriate saddle points on the potential energy surface have been found, supporting the interpretation of vacancy multiple jumps as distinct migration mechanisms., Comment: 16 pages

Abstract

The main aim of this paper is to examine the role of human factors in the safety of ship transport (shipping). Particularly, we analyzed the personal, psychosocial and organizational factor that intervene in this context and the consequences on the safety performance and workers' well-being. In this review, some shipping accidents and their causes are presented and a particular attention will be paid to human error, fatigue and stress, non-technical skills and perception of safety. In the final part of the paper the safety performance and its antecedents in the context of shipping will be extensively examined.

Abstract

Nanocrystalline titania pigments were produced by a novel synthesis route consisting of a high temperature forced hydrolysis in a coordinating high-boiling solvent. The effect of synthesis conditions as well as doping with Cr, Sb and V on the particle size and on the anatase-to-rutile transformation was studied by temperature-resolved synchrotron powder diffraction. The experiments were performed directly on as-synthesized low concentration suspensions of titania nanoparticles (up to 230°C) and on dried titania nanoparticles (up to 950°C). Crystallite size of as-synthesized nanoparticles is in the 5 to 50 nm range, being affected by the synthesis conditions as well as by doping and exhibits a slow-rate coarsening trend with temperature. The anatase-to-rutile transformation is drastically influenced by both synthesis conditions and doping. In particular, doping affected the anatase-to-rutile transformation rate, while the synthesis conditions influenced the phase composition, causing the appearance of brookite.

Abstract

Craving plays an important role in the pathogenesis of alcohol dependence and relapse. In this review we have tried to analyse how many contrasting theories have been formulated in order to clarify the concept of craving. Many complex neurobiochemical mechanisms are implicated in the etiology of craving; these mechanisms involve several neurotransmitters, such us dopamine, opioids, glutamate, and serotonin. On the other hand comportamental and/or cognitive aspects could also play a role in the etiology of craving. The coexistence of many and often contrasting theories can indicate that different subtypes of patients could have different mechanisms at the basis of alcohol craving, suggesting that it could be advisable to personalize the anti-craving therapy.

Abstract

In the last decade, craving has increasingly been considered an important target for the treatment of patients with alcohol problems, and several drugs able to interfere with the neurotransmitters involved in craving mechanisms have been experimented. However, different subtypes of patients could have different mechanisms at the basis of alcohol craving. In this review, the main drugs currently used in the treatment of patients with alcohol problems are described. A hypothesis of pharmacological treatment of the different types of craving is also discussed.

Abstract

In questo lavoro è stata studiata la resistenza a fatica per flessione alternata di un acciaio sinterizzatocontenente 1.5%Cr, 0.2%Mo e 0.2%C nitrurato in plasma. Il materiale è stato prodotto variando la pressione dicompattazione e la temperatura di sinterizzazione per ottenere diversi valori della frazione di sezione utileresistente. L’indurimento superficiale e lo stato di tensione residua di compressione nello strato di diffusionepromuovono la nucleazione della cricca di fatica negli strati sub superficiali rendendo il comportamento afatica meno sensibile alla porosità superficiale (tendenzialmente maggiore rispetto alla porosità media) efortemente dipendente dalla frazione di sezione utile resistente.

37. Role of bypass, endarterectomy, extra-anatomic bypass and endovascular surgery in unilateral iliac occlusive disease: a review of 1257 cases

Abstract

Some 1257 patients who had undergone revascularization procedures for unilateral iliac occlusions were reviewed retrospectively. A total of 824 patients were operated upon using conventional operations, 165 patients had femorofemoral bypass and 268 were treated using endovascular surgery techniques. Revascularization was performed through an extraperitoneal approach by means of iliac thromboendarterectomy (560) or iliac femoral bypass (264) if there was a total occlusion of either the common or external iliac artery (group 1). A femorofemoral crossover bypass was inserted when the operative risk was considered to be high (group 2). Endovascular procedures (percutaneous transluminal angioplasty 234, laser percutaneous transluminal angioplasty 11, stenting 22, atherectomy one) were used in recent years to treat stenoses or occlusions of 3 cm or less (group 3). The indications for operation were severe claudication in 79.7% in group 1 and 92.6% in group 3, whereas in group 2 66.7% of patients presented with symptoms of more advanced ischaemia. The immediate patency rate was 97.0% after extraperitoneal reconstructive surgery, 96.9% in the femorofemoral group and 92.1% in patients having an endovascular procedure. The operative mortality rate was 0.7, 4.2, and 0.3% for groups 1-3, respectively. The 5-year patency rate, analysed by the life-table method, was 77.9% in group 1, 75.3% in group 2 and 73.7% in group 3 (P = n.s., log rank test). The different revascularization techniques were chosen on the basis of the type of disease present and the patient's general condition. All procedures appeared to be effective when correctly selected.

Abstract

In this study we investigated the efficacy of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) and laser percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (LPTA) as an adjunct to surgery in patients with peripheral vascular disease. We report 84 cases of the simultaneous association of direct arterial surgery and angioradiological procedures to treat 82 patients with arterial occlusive disease of the lower limbs. Sixty-five patients (79.2%) were affected by severe claudication and 14 (19.6%) presented with rest pain or gangrene. One patient (1.2%) had signs of acute ischemia. PTA or LPTA were utilized as an inflow procedure in 41 cases (48.8%), as an outflow procedure in 24 (28.6%) and in 19 cases (22.6%) to recanalize an arterial occlusion in the contralateral limb opposite to surgical interventions. Immediate postoperative patency was achieved in 79 cases (94.0%), while in 5 cases (6.0%) it was impossible to perform a satisfactory balloon dilatation. The complication rate was 16.6%: 10 perioperative thromboses, 1 plaque dissection, 1 peripheral embolus, 1 haemorrhage and 1 femoral nerve lesion. No perioperative mortality occurred in this group of patients. Long term patency, analyzed with the life-table method (mean follow-up: 28 months) was respectively 78.0%, 76.3% and 78.9% at 5 years. These data indicate that the combined revascularization technique should always be recommended in properly selected patients because it is less invasive, the surgical risk and operative time are reduced and associated with early and long term cumulative patency rates comparable to those of extensive surgery.
