Abstract

Every year throughout the world > 50 million vehicles reach the end of their life, producing millions of tons of automotive waste. The current strategies for the separation of the non-ferrous waste fraction, contain mainly aluminum, magnesium, zinc and copper alloys, involve high investment and operational costs, and pose environmental concerns. The European project SHREDDERSORT, in which our research group was actively involved, aimed to overcome this issue by developing a new dry sorting technology for the shredding of non-ferrous automotive wastes. This work represents one step of the complex SHREDDERSORT project, dedicated to the development of a strategy based on Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) for the sorting of light alloys. LIBS was here applied in laboratory for the analysis of stationary aluminum shredder samples. To process the LIBS spectra a methodological approach based on artificial neural networks was used. Although separation could in principle be based on simple emission line ratios, the neural networks approach enables more reproducible results, which can accommodate the unavoidable signal variations due to the low intrinsic reproducibility of the LIBS systems. The neural network separated samples into different clusters and estimates their elemental concentrations.

In this communication, an extensive study and its results are presented about the composition of some Etruscan copper alloy findings. The objects came from Tomb 20 of the "Pratino" necropolis in Tuscania, near Viterbo (Italy), dating back to the late Hellenistic period. The excavation and study of the site was granted to the Lorenzo de' Medici Italian International Institute (Ld'M) in 2005. Since 2011, the activity is directed by the Center for Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies (CAMNES). The archaeological materials were classified according to their composition

This paper presents a discussion on different techniques that can be used for the analysis of multispectral images (i.e., images taken in more than three spectral bands) that are acquired in the context of Cultural Heritage or Archaeological studies. False Color imaging, Blind Source Separation methods and techniques based on the use of Artificial Neural Networks are discussed. Examples are presented on the application of these methods to the study of Cultural Heritage and Archaeology.

Abstract

An integrated approach was used to understand how wind and freshwater input influence the water circulation along the Romanian Black Sea coast. Field data from different ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) surveys in the area of the delta were combined with a 3D finite element model. The model SHYFEM (Shallow Water HYdrodynamic Finite Element Model), developed at the Institute of Marine Sciences (ISMAR – National Research Council, Venice, Italy), was used on the entire Black Sea, with higher resolution near the Romanian coast and the Danube River distributaries. Several theoretical simulations were carried out, varying the wind velocity and river discharge, according to the available long-term data and using measured data as a reference for model validation. The simulated currents have the same order of magnitude as the measured ones. The results show that the Danube discharge influences the circulation along the entire Romanian Black Sea coast, generating a longshore current, mainly localized in the surface layers. This current occurs even at low river discharges and is found both at low and high wind velocity. In this study we compared the results of the simulations for two main wind directions, NE and SE, but the wind from SW (generally inland) was also considered since it is opposite to the downdrift buoyant flow propagation. Maps of the current field and the fluxes, calculated on several sections perpendicular to the coast, were analyzed for all these forcings. We made the simulations both for the cold and warm season, by applying different temperature and salinity fields. The results show that, for both cold and warm seasons, the constantly blowing wind becomes a significant factor in the formation of coastal currents. Calculated fluxes on cross-sections versus Danube discharge usually show important differences between the cold and warm seasons, which are due to the distribution of temperature and salinity. Those seasonal differences are less significant in the case of increased wind velocity. Thus, at higher velocity, wind becomes a dominant factor, controlling the overall circulation. This study is a first step towards the development of a fully operational oceanographic model for the northwestern part of the Black Sea. Future developments will include the use of real meteorological forcing, modelling of the waves and sediment transport.

Abstract

In the framework of the archeological investigations of an outstanding Roman Villas in Tuscany (Villa dell'Oratorio, in the territory of Capraia e Limite, Florence), archaeometric studies have been perfomed with the aim to characterize building and decorative materials and retrace construction phases and manufacture technology. The Villas, built in the middle of the 4th century, includes a hexagonal structure, about 30 meters in diameter, decorated with painted wall plasters and beautiful figurative floor mosaics. The structure is equipped with apsed rooms (at least 5), exhibiting similarity with some monumental triclinia of Constantinople and Rome. Archaeometric analyses have been carried out on mortars, stones and vitreous tesserae, with the aim to identify the raw materials and support the archaeological investigation about cultural models and economic status of the aristocratic owner in the Late Roman Tuscany. Mortars samples from different building units of the Villas have been studied through minero-petrographic and thermogravimetric methods. Stone tesserae have been analyzed by minero-petrographic and sedimentologic methods, to obtain information on the provenance of the raw materials used. Finally, Raman spectroscopy and SEM-EDS analyses have been performed on vitreous tesserae, to obtain information on colouring and opaquening agents. The studies carried out on the building elements suggested that, in spite of iconographic and architectural models proper of the great Mediterranean villae, local and spolia raw materials were used in this great construction work.
