Abstract

The decarbonization of the manufacturing sector is needed to meet the climate goals set by the Paris agreement. Most research so far has focused on large firms. Yet, medium‐sized and mid‐cap firms also face increasing pressures to decarbonize, particularly in their role as suppliers of large firms. Prior research shows that these firms are very heterogeneous and that approaches to decarbonize are not adopted in isolation but within sets or configurations—hence, a detailed investigation of these configurations is fruitful to understand the multiplicity of responses to decarbonization. Such an understanding allows to develop an effective decarbonization policy for medium‐sized and mid‐cap firms and provide meaningful managerial advice. Using a latent‐profile analysis, our study identifies five distinct decarbonization types of medium‐sized firms in the German manufacturing sector that adopt a specific configuration of decarbonization strategies. These types can be described as decarbonization all‐rounders, internal supply chain decarbonizers, total supply chain decarbonizers, decarbonization laggards and decarbonization sceptics. A comparison of these five decarbonization types reveals significant differences in stakeholder pressures, green capabilities and green innovation as well as firm performance and (structural) firm characteristics. Abstract

Our meta-analysis investigates the environmental sustainability performance of family firms (FFs) distinguishing between environmental hand- and footprint and accounting for FF heterogeneity. Based on a sample of 87 primary studies comprising 118,538 firms, we find no significant difference between FFs and non-FFs regarding their overall environmental sustainability performance. Yet, distinguishing between environmental hand- and footprint, we show that FFs have a lower footprint than non-FFs but do not differ regarding their handprint. Firm size, being a public firm, and type of family involvement moderate the effects of FF status on environmental sustainability performance. Our research note extends prior meta-analytical evidence and contributes to a more fine-grained and nuanced understanding of the environmental sustainability performance of FFs. Abstract

The EIF VC Survey, the EIF Private Equity Mid-Market Survey, and the EIF Business Angels Survey (the largest combined regular survey exercises among General Partners and Business Angels on a pan-European level) provide an opportunity to retrieve unique market insights. This publication is based on the results of the 2022 VC Survey, conducted by the EIF with the support of Invest Europe. The paper focuses on the market sentiment as well as the impact of the current geopolitical situation and difficult macroeconomic environment. The study looks at the current situation, developments in the recent past and expectations for the future. It highlights substantial challenges, but also opportunities as perceived by survey participants. The main results are summarised and compared over time. The publication provides a valuable picture of the developments in the VC market in 2022 as well as an outlook for the near future. The EIF Working Papers are designed to make available to a wider readership selected topics and studies in relation to EIF's business. The Working Papers are edited by EIF's Research & Market Analysis and are typically authored or co-authored by EIF staff or are written in cooperation with EIF.

8. Exploring Key Drivers of CEO Trust in Family and Non-Family Firms.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of trustworthiness on manager trust in CEOs from family and non-family firms and its subsequent effects on job performance. Drawing from a sample of 482 managers working in family firms and non-family firms, our results show that managers, unlike in non-family firms, build trust in family CEOs based on their perceived integrity and benevolence, while the perceived abilities of family-firm CEOs do not play a role. Further, trust in family-firm CEOs has a positive mediating effect on managers' job performance, leading to higher job satisfaction and reduced turnover intentions. However, this effect does not significantly differ between family firms and non-family firms, suggesting that trust in CEOs does not give family firms a distinct advantage over non-family firms. Our study contributes to the understanding of trust dynamics in organizational leadership and provides insights for future studies on trust and trustworthiness in family and non-family business contexts. Abstract

Replication studies are important for the empirical research process. Yet, while there is an increased awareness of the need for replication in management research, it appears that such studies are rarely published in leading management journals. Importantly, we lack a comprehensive overview of replication studies in the top management journals that spans all sub-disciplines. Our systematic review closes this gap and provides an overview of the prevalence, types, outcomes, and impact of replication studies in management journals. We find that differences in the prevalence of replications between sub-disciplines exist and that most replications are wide replications. With regard to the replication outcome, our review shows that the share of non-confirming replications is low. Moreover, such replications are cited less often than confirming replications pointing towards a confirmation bias in management research. We discuss the implications of our results for authors, reviewers, and editors of management journals.
