2. Superior load‐to‐failure in an all‐suture anchor system for all‐inside meniscal repair compared to a PEEK‐cage anchor system in an experimental cadaveric test setting

Abstract Purpose The purpose of this study was to compare the biomechanical properties of a latest generation all‐suture anchor repair device (ASARD) for meniscal repair with that of a latest generation PEEK‐cage anchor repair device (PCARD) in an experimental setting using cadaveric menisci. Methods Twenty‐six menisci were obtained from the knees of fresh body donors. Artificially created meniscal lesions were treated randomly, using a single stitch with either an ASARD or a PCARD. Cyclic biomechanical testing, utilising a universal material testing machine and following an established protocol, was carried out and load‐to‐failure (LTF), displacement, stiffness, and mode‐of‐failure (MOF) reported. Results Mean LTF was found to be 61% higher in the ASARD group at 107.10 N (standard deviation [SD], 42.34), compared to 65.86 N (SD, 27.42) in the PCARD group with statistical significance (p = 0.022). The ASARD exhibited a trend towards higher stiffness (10.35 N; SD, 3.92 versus 7.78 N; SD; 3.59) and higher displacement at cycles one, 100, and 499 (1.64, 3.27, and 4.17 mm versus 0.93, 2.19, and 2.83 mm) compared to the PCARD. Cheese wiring was the most common mode‐of‐failure in both groups (76.9%). Conclusions This study demonstrates that an ASARD shows a higher mean LTF than a PCARD when compared in an experimental biomechanical setting. Level of evidence Level III

3. The accuracy of preoperative implant size prediction achieved by digital templating in total knee arthroplasty is not affected by the quality of lateral knee radiographs

Abstract Background Digital templating software can be used for preoperative implant size prediction in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, the accuracy of its prediction is reported to be low, and the impact of radiograph quality is unclear. Purpose To investigate on the application of lateral knee radiograph quality criteria for knee rotation (KR) and knee abduction/adduction (KA) and their impact on the accuracy of final implant size prediction achieved by preoperative digital templating for TKA. Methods A total of 191 radiographs of patients undergoing TKA were allocated into four groups according to their KR as measured at the posterior femoral condyles and their KA as measured at the distal femoral condyles on lateral knee radiographs: group A (KR ≤ 5 mm, KA ≤ 5 mm), B1 (KR > 5 mm, KA ≤ 5 mm), B2 (KR ≤ 5 mm, KA > 5 mm) and B3 (KR > 5 mm, KA > 5 mm). Preoperative templating of femoral and tibial implant size using digital templating software was carried out by two observers. Correlation coefficients (CCs) between planned and final implant size, percentage of cases with planned to final size match as well as percentage of cases within ±1 and ±2 of planned to final size were reported according to groups. Results Group A showed the highest percentage of cases with matching planned to final femoral implant size (45%) and the highest percentage of cases with ±1 planned to final implant size (86%) as compared to B1 (match 28%, ±1 84%), B2 (match 41%, ±1 84%) and B3 (match 35%, ±1 78%). CCs for planned to final implant size were reported at >0.75 in all groups. No statistically significant difference in the CCs of planned to final implant size amongst groups was found. Conclusion The accuracy of implant size prediction achieved by preoperative digital templating for TKA is neither affected by KR nor KA on lateral knee radiographs. Level of evidence Level III.

Abstract Surgical site infection (SSI) following osteosynthesis of trochanteric or subtrochanteric fractures is a rare but serious complication with incidence rate ranging from 1 to 3%. SSIs are associated with higher mortality and increased length of hospital stay resulting in higher healthcare costs and loss of life quality. In this retrospective analysis all patients with SSI following osteosynthesis of trochanteric or subtrochanteric fractures at the Department of Trauma Surgery were identified. We included all surgical procedures performed from 1992 to 2018, using data from electronic health records and SSI-Trauma-Registry. The aim was to describe epidemiological data, as well as to identify parameters correlating with the occurrence of SSI and mortality. Of 2753 patients, 53 (1.9%) developed SSI. Longer operative time was demonstrated among patients with SSI (P = 0.008). Mortality during the first postoperative year was significantly higher in the SSI group (32.1% vs. 19.1%; P = 0.018), with detection of methicillin-sensitive (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA; HR 4.13, CI 95% 1.24–13.80; P = 0.021) or Enterococcus spp. (HR 5.58, CI 95% 1.67–18.65; P = 0.005) being independent risk factors. The security landscape of Internet of Things (IoT) networks continues to draw significant attention from recent networks; the Version Number Attack (VNA) stands out as a prominent threat to IoT network resources. Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Network structures low-power and lossy networks through one or more Destination Oriented Directed Acyclic Graphs (DODAGs). Each DODAG is assigned a version number, serving the purpose of ensuring the existence of loop-free paths to the root node. In the event of any inconsistency detected by the root node, the version number is incremented, triggering a global repair process and the reconstruction of the Directed Acyclic Graph. A potential security concern arises when a malicious node advertises a false version number in its control message, compelling the initiation of a global repair process. This study conducts a comprehensive analysis of the VNA’s impact, considering various parameters that have not been explored in previous research articles. These parameters include an examination of the additional forwarding tasks introduced by the attack and an exploration of factors contributing to node hyperactivity (such as loops, local and global repairs, etc.). The article delves into the specific control messages that result in the detrimental effects of the attack, offering a detailed analysis of control overhead, energy consumption, Packet Delivery Ratio, and latency. The obtained results show that the DAO (Destination Advertisement Object) messages dominate the total control overhead and are the main contributor to the total consumer energy, where the closest the malicious node to the sink the more damaging is the attack.

Aims: Implant-related postoperative spondylodiscitis (IPOS) is a severe complication in spine surgery and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. With growing knowledge in the field of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), equivalent investigations towards the management of implant-related infections of the spine are indispensable. To our knowledge, this study provides the largest description of cases of IPOS to date. Methods: Patients treated for IPOS from January 2006 to December 2020 were included. Patient demographics, parameters upon admission and discharge, radiological imaging, and microbiological results were retrieved from medical records. CT and MRI were analyzed for epidural, paravertebral, and intervertebral abscess formation, vertebral destruction, and endplate involvement. Pathogens were identified by CT-guided or intraoperative biopsy, intraoperative tissue sampling, or implant sonication. Results: A total of 32 cases of IPOS with a mean patient age of 68.7 years (37.6 to 84.1) were included. Diabetes, age > 60 years, and history of infection were identified as risk factors. Patient presentation upon admission included a mean body temperature of 36.7°C (36.1 to 38.0), back pain at rest (mean visual analogue scale (VAS) mean 5/10) and when mobile (mean VAS 6/10), as well as elevated levels of CRP (mean 76.8 mg/l (0.4 to 202.9)) and white blood cell count (mean 9.2 units/nl (2.6 to 32.8)). Pathogens were identified by CT-guided or conventional biopsy, intraoperative tissue sampling, or sonication, and Gram-positive cocci presented as the most common among them. Antibiotic therapy was established in all cases with pathogen-specific treatment in 23 (71.9%) subjects. Overall 27 (84.4%) patients received treatment by debridement, decompression, and fusion of the affected segment. Conclusion: Cases of IPOS are rare and share similarities with spontaneous spondylodiscitis. While procedures such as CT-guided biopsy and sonication are valuable tools in the diagnosis of IPOS, MRI and intraoperative tissue sampling remain the gold standard. 7. Hot electron enhanced photoemission from laser fabricated plasmonic photocathodes

Photocathodes are key elements in high-brightness electron sources and ubiquitous in the operation of large-scale accelerators, although their operation is often limited by their quantum efficiency and lifetime. Here, we propose to overcome these limitations by utilizing direct-laser nanostructuring techniques on copper substrates, improving their efficiency and robustness for next-generation electron photoinjectors. When the surface of a metal is nanoengineered with patterns and particles much smaller than the optical wavelength, it can lead to the excitation of localized surface plasmons that produce hot electrons, ultimately contributing to the overall charge produced. In order to quantify the performance of laser-produced plasmonic photocathodes, we measured their quantum efficiency in a typical electron gun setup. Our experimental results suggest that plasmon-induced hot electrons lead to a significant increase in quantum efficiency, showing an overall charge enhancement factor of at least 4.5 and up to 25. A further increase in their efficiency was observed when combined with semiconductor thin-films deposited over the laser processed surfaces, pointing at potential pathways for further optimization. We demonstrate that simple laser-produced plasmonic photocathodes outperform standard metallic photocathodes, and can be directly produced in-situ at the electron gun level in vacuum environments and without any disruptive intervention. This approach could lead to unprecedented efficient and continuous operation of electron sources, and is useful in many applications across scientific disciplines requiring high average and peak current electron beams.

This study describes the outcome of supracondylar humerus fractures in children using crossed K-wires after closed or open reduction with the medial, lateral or bilateral approach. Patients treated between January 2000 and December 2019 were classified according to the Von Laer classification, complications were classified according to the Sink classification and clinical outcomes were classified according to modified Flynn criteria. In total, 364 patients with a mean age of 5.23 ± 2.45 years were included. The majority were type IV fractures (156; 42.9%) and 94 (60.3%) needed an open reduction for which the medial approach (53; 56.4%) was predominantly used. Overall, of 50 complications (31 using closed reduction, 19 open reduction), 17/50 (34%) needed revision surgery. An excellent clinical outcome was achieved in 348/364 (95.6%) patients. The approach used for open reduction as such had no influence on the complication rate or clinical outcome. For severely displaced fractures, the data showed that an open approach for crossed K-wires tended to result in fewer complications and better clinical outcomes than a closed reduction. If an open reduction is indicated, the required approach (medial, lateral or bilateral) should be primarily selected according to the requirements of the fracture pattern and eventual cosmetic considerations.

9. Catalytic domain-dependent and -independent transcriptional activities of the tumour suppressor histone H3K27 demethylase UTX/KDM6A in specific cancer types

The histone H3K27 demethylase, UTX/KDM6A, plays a critical role in the early development of vertebrates, and mutations are frequently found in various cancers. Several studies on developmental and cancer biology have focused on preferential transcriptional regulation by UTX independently of its H3K27 demethylase catalytic activity. Here, we analysed gene expression profiles of wild-type (WT) UTX and a catalytic activity-defective mutant in 786-O and HCT116 cells and confirmed that catalytic activity-dependent and -independent regulation contributes to the expression of most of the target genes. Indeed, the catalytic activity-defective mutant suppressed colony formation similar to the WT in our assay system. However, the expression of several genes was significantly dependent on the catalytic activity of UTX in a cell type-specific manner, which could account for the inherent variation in the transcriptional landscape of various cancer types. The promoter/enhancer regions of the catalytic activity-dependent genes identified here were found to be preferentially modified with H3K4me1 and less with H3K27me3 than those of the independent genes. These findings, combined with previous reports, highlight not only the understanding of determinants for the catalytic activity dependency but also the development and application of pharmaceutical agents targeting the H3K27 or H3K4 modifications.

10. Simultaneous atmospheric pressure plasma jet etching and laser irradiation for ultra-precise optical glass processing

The use of beam-based technologies to process optical elements with nanoscale precision enables the fabrication of freeform surfaces. In particular, atmospheric pressure plasma jets (APPJs) have desirable properties, e.g., depth precision < 5 nm, low surface roughness and processing at atmospheric conditions. However, the composition of optical glasses and glass ceramics, containing metal oxides, leads to the formation of non-volatile reaction products that remain on the substrate surface. These residues reduce the etching rate and cause severe roughening of the surface. Laser irradiation has already been demonstrated as a promising option for removing the residual layer and the aim of the current work is to integrate it into the APPJ system for simultaneous processing. Therefore, an excimer laser (λ = 248 nm; tPulse = 20 ns) with a maximum pulse frequency of 100 Hz was added to a plasma jet setup and experiments with varying laser fluences as well as laser frequencies were performed on N-BK7 substrates. White light interferometry was used to analyse the samples. The experiments showed an improved etching result with higher removal rates for the combined process at high laser pulse frequency (100 Hz) and fluences in the range of 0.1-0.45 J·cm-2.

11. Functional outcome of an ‘all-inside’ technique in female anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction at long-term follow-up: A gender-sensitive analysis

Background: As the awareness towards gender-specific therapies continues to increase among all fields of medicine, so does the need for gender-sensitive evaluations of established surgical techniques. With a higher likelihood of anterior cruciate ligament injury in women, a critical assessment of the functional outcome of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction regarding patient sex is indispensable. Almost all pre-existing literature on this subject is based on anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions carried out before 2008, when ‘all-inside’ techniques did not exist. This implicates the need to investigate this technique towards its differences in outcome between male and female patients. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a difference concerning the functional outcome of an ‘all-inside’ technique for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in female patients when compared to a cohort of male patients matched for body mass index and age. Design: Retrospective analysis. Methods: All female patients who underwent anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using an all-inside technique between 2011 and 2012 were examined for inclusion. Functional outcome parameters investigated included the Lysholm Knee Score, International Knee Documentation Committee score, Visual Analogue Scale score and the Tegner Activity Scale. All parameters were documented before surgery and at 3-, 6-, 12- and >24 months follow-up. At 24-month follow-up, anterior–posterior knee laxity was tested using the KT-2000 arthrometer device. For comparison, an equivalent group of male patients who underwent the same procedure was matched. Results: 27 female patients were matched with 27 male patients. The average age was 29 years, and a mean follow-up of 90 months could be achieved with 27 of patients reaching a follow-up of > 10 years. The evaluated scores showed no significant difference between female and male patients. Women presented with poorer functional outcome at 3- as well as 6-month follow-ups compared to men, without reaching statistical significance. After 12 months, no further differences could be found. Conclusion: This study proved that an all-inside technique for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is able to produce the same functional outcome in female as in male patients at long-term follow-up. The results on short-term outcome indicate the need for further research towards gender-specific differences after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, their potential causes and potential of improvement. 12. Protective effects of sugarcane phenolic extract against lipid oxidative damages in raw ground pork and beef during refrigerated storage conditions

The study evaluated the bioactive components and antioxidant properties of sugarcane phenolic extracts (SCPE) against lipid oxidation in raw ground pork and beef during refrigerated storage conditions. Results showed that SCPE has a high total phenolic content of 35.9 g GAE/100 g sample majority of which are vanillic (799.77 mg/100 g), sinapic (434.38 mg/100 g), and coumaric (342.37 mg/100 g) acids. These phenolic compounds exhibited strong radical scavenging activities against DPPH (191.00 mg TE/g) and ABTS (359.80 mg TE/g) radical, ferric reducing capacity (97.80 mg TE/g), and lipid peroxidation inhibition (120.20 mg TE/g) activities which are comparable to BHT. Supplementation of SCPE at 400 mg/kg fresh weight of ground pork and ground beef improved the antioxidant activities of meat samples, leading to the delay in TBARS formation, lower reduction in heme iron content, and minimal increase in metmyoglobin content during 14-day refrigerated storage as compared to BHT-treated and control. Moreover, the redness of meat was preserved in SCPE- and BHT-treated samples as measured by a* color value. Correlation heat maps showed that TBARS, metmyoglobin, and ΔE are positively correlated with each other, and at the same time showed negatively correlated with heme iron and a*. This study revealed that antioxidant extracts from sugarcane presented a positive effect on the oxidative stability of raw ground pork and beef during refrigerated storage.

The Platonic Representation Hypothesis claims that recent foundation models are converging to a shared representation space as a function of their downstream task performance, irrespective of the objectives and data modalities used to train these models. Representational similarity is generally measured for individual datasets and is not necessarily consistent across datasets. Thus, one may wonder whether this convergence of model representations is confounded by the datasets commonly used in machine learning. Here, we propose a systematic way to measure how representational similarity between models varies with the set of stimuli used to construct the representations. We find that the objective function is the most crucial factor in determining the consistency of representational similarities across datasets. Specifically, self-supervised vision models learn representations whose relative pairwise similarities generalize better from one dataset to another compared to those of image classification or image-text models. Moreover, the correspondence between representational similarities and the models' task behavior is dataset-dependent, being most strongly pronounced for single-domain datasets. 14. SUDS: A Strategy for Unsupervised Drift Sampling

Supervised machine learning often encounters concept drift, where the data distribution changes over time, degrading model performance. Existing drift detection methods focus on identifying these shifts but often overlook the challenge of acquiring labeled data for model retraining after a shift occurs. We present the Strategy for Drift Sampling (SUDS), a novel method that selects homogeneous samples for retraining using existing drift detection algorithms, thereby enhancing model adaptability to evolving data. SUDS seamlessly integrates with current drift detection techniques. We also introduce the Harmonized Annotated Data Accuracy Metric (HADAM), a metric that evaluates classifier performance in relation to the quantity of annotated data required to achieve the stated performance, thereby taking into account the difficulty of acquiring labeled data. Our contributions are twofold: SUDS combines drift detection with strategic sampling to improve the retraining process, and HADAM provides a metric that balances classifier performance with the amount of labeled data, ensuring efficient resource utilization. Empirical results demonstrate the efficacy of SUDS in optimizing labeled data use in dynamic environments, significantly improving the performance of machine learning applications in real-world scenarios. 15. Timing performance of SiPM-on-Tile elements: Laboratory and test beam measurements

The SiPM-on-Tile technology for highly granular calorimeters, where small plastic scintillator tiles are directly read out with SiPMs, has been developed for the CALICE Analog Hadron Calorimeter, and has been adopted for parts of the hadronic section of the CMS High Granularity Calorimeter. For future electron-positron colliders, a single cell time stamping on the sub-nanosecond level for energy deposits corresponding to single minimum-ionizing particles is desired to provide background rejection and to support pattern recognition and energy reconstruction with particle flow algorithms. To better understand the intrinsic time resolution achievable with the SiPM-on-Tile technology, we have performed detailed measurements in test beams at DESY, probing scintillator tiles of different sizes. The study is complemented by laser measurements that provide insights into processes within the scintillator tile relevant for timing. 16. Profiling Near-Surface Winds on Mars Using Attitude Data from Mars 2020 Ingenuity

We used attitude data from the Mars Ingenuity helicopter with a simple steady-state model to estimate windspeeds and directions at altitudes of 3 meters up to 24 meters, the first time winds at such altitudes have been probed on Mars. We compared our estimates to concurrent wind data at 1.5 m height from the meteorology package MEDA onboard the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover and to predictions from meteorological models. Wind directions inferred from the Ingenuity data agreed to within uncertainties with the directions measured by MEDA, when the latter were available, but deviated from model-predicted directions by as much as 180 deg in some cases. Also, the inferred windspeeds are often much higher than expected. For example, meteorological predictions tailored to the time and location of Ingenuity's 59th flight suggest Ingenuity should not have seen windspeeds above about 15 m/s, but we inferred speeds reaching nearly 25 m/s. By contrast, the 61st flight was at a similar time and season and showed weaker winds then the 59th flight, suggesting winds shaped by transient phenomena. For flights during which we have MEDA data to compare to, inferred windspeeds imply friction velocities exceeding 1 m/s and roughness lengths of more than 10 cm based on a boundary layer model that incorporates convective instability, which seem implausibly large. These results suggest Ingenuity was probing winds sensitive to aerodynamic conditions hundreds of meters upwind instead of the conditions very near Mars 2020, but they may also reflect a need for updated boundary layer wind models. An improved model for Ingenuity's aerodynamic response that includes the effects of transient winds may also modify our results. Historical maps provide valuable information and knowledge about the past. However, as they often feature non-standard projections, hand-drawn styles, and artistic elements, it is challenging for non-experts to identify and interpret them. While existing image captioning methods have achieved remarkable success on natural images, their performance on maps is suboptimal as maps are underrepresented in their pre-training process. Despite the recent advance of GPT-4 in text recognition and map captioning, it still has a limited understanding of maps, as its performance wanes when texts (e.g., titles and legends) in maps are missing or inaccurate. Besides, it is inefficient or even impractical to fine-tune the model with users' own datasets. To address these problems, we propose a novel and lightweight map-captioning counterpart. Specifically, we fine-tune the state-of-the-art vision-language model CLIP to generate captions relevant to historical maps and enrich the captions with GPT-3.5 to tell a brief story regarding where, what, when and why of a given map. We propose a novel decision tree architecture to only generate captions relevant to the specified map type. Our system shows invariance to text alterations in maps. The system can be easily adapted and extended to other map types and scaled to a larger map captioning system. The code is open-sourced at https://github.com/claudaff/automatic-map-storytelling.

However, map-making is still largely confined to those with expertise in GIS and cartography due to the specialized software and complex workflow involved, from data processing to visualization. While generative AI has recently demonstrated its remarkable capability in creating various types of content and its wide accessibility to the general public, its potential in generating maps is yet to be fully realized. This paper highlights the key applications of generative AI in map-making, summarizes recent advancements in generative AI, identifies the specific technologies required and the challenges of using current methods, and provides a roadmap for developing a generative mapping system (GMS) to make map-making more accessible.

The diagnosis of glaucoma plays a critical role in the management and treatment of this vision-threatening disease. Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause blindness by damaging the optic nerve at the back of the eye. Often called "silent thief of sight", it exhibits no symptoms during the early stages. Therefore, early detection is crucial to prevent vision loss. With the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly Deep Learning (DL) techniques, Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CADx) systems have emerged as promising tools to assist clinicians in accurately diagnosing glaucoma early. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of AI techniques utilized in CADx systems for glaucoma diagnosis. Through a detailed analysis of current literature, we identify key gaps and challenges in these systems, emphasizing the need for improved safety, reliability, interpretability, and explainability. By identifying research gaps, we aim to advance the field of CADx systems especially for the early diagnosis of glaucoma, in order to prevent any potential loss of vision.

20. On picking operations in e-commerce warehouses: Insights from the complete-information counterpart

Major players in e-commerce process dynamically incoming orders in real-time and already use advanced anticipation techniques, like AI, to predict characteristics of future orders. However, at the warehousing level, there are still no unambiguous recommendations on integrating anticipation with intelligent online optimization algorithms, nor an unbiased benchmark to assess the improvement potential of advanced anticipation over myopic techniques, as optimal online solutions are usually unavailable. In this paper, we compute and analyze Complete-Information Optimal policy Solutions (CIOSs), of an exact perfect anticipation algorithm with full knowledge of future customer orders' arrival times and items, for picking operations in picker-to-parts warehouses. We provide analytical properties and leverage CIOSs to uncover decision patterns that enhance simpler algorithms, improving both makespan (costs) and order turnover (delivery speed). Using a metric similar to the gap to optimality, we quantify the gains from optimization elements and the improvements remaining for advanced anticipation mechanisms. To compute CIOSs, we design the first exact algorithm for the Order Batching, Sequencing, and Routing Problem with Release Times (OBSRP-R), based on dynamic programming. Our analysis advises on the largely overlooked intervention - the dynamic adjustment of started batches, and the strategic relocation of an idle picker towards future picking locations. The former affected over 60% of CIOS orders and triggered consistent improvements across warehousing policies. The latter occurred before 39%-62% CIOS orders and could decrease a myopic policy's gap to optimal turnover by 4.3% on average (up to 14%). Notably, we challenge the debated concept of strategic waiting, revealing why the latter resembles an "all-in" gamble and harms both makespan and order turnover when intervention is allowed.

We investigate general observables of the complex Liouville string with worldsheet boundaries. We develop a universal formalism that reduces such observables to ordinary closed string amplitudes without boundaries, applicable to any worldsheet string theory, but particularly simple in the context of 2d or minimal string theories. We apply this formalism to the duality of the complex Liouville string with the matrix integral proposed in arXiv:2409.18759 and arXiv:2410.07345 and showcase the formalism by finding appropriate boundary conditions for various matrix model quantities of interest, such as the resolvent or the partition function. We also apply this formalism towards the computation of non-perturbative effects on the worldsheet mediated by ZZ-instantons. These are known to be plagued by extra subtleties which need input from string field theory to resolve. This paper considers the problem of computing the operator norm of a linear map between finite dimensional Hilbert spaces when only evaluations of the linear map are available and under restrictive storage assumptions. We propose a stochastic method of random search type for the maximization of the Rayleigh quotient and employ an exact line search in the random search directions. Moreover, we show that the proposed algorithm converges to the global maximum (the operator norm) almost surely and illustrate the performance of the method with numerical experiments.

We propose a duality between the complex Liouville string and a two-matrix integral. The complex Liouville string is defined by coupling two Liouville theories with complex central charges $c = 13 \pm i \lambda$ on the worldsheet. The matrix integral is characterized by its spectral curve which allows us to compute the perturbative string amplitudes recursively via topological recursion. This duality constitutes a controllable instance of holographic duality. Standard decoding approaches for convolutional codes, such as the Viterbi and BCJR algorithms, entail significant complexity when correcting synchronization errors. The situation worsens when multiple received sequences should be jointly decoded, as in DNA storage. Previous work has attempted to address this via separate-BCJR decoding, i.e., combining the results of decoding each received sequence separately. Another attempt to reduce complexity adapted sequential decoders for use over channels with insertion and deletion errors. However, these decoding alternatives remain prohibitively expensive for high-rate convolutional codes. To address this, we adapt sequential decoders to decode multiple received sequences jointly over the syndrome trellis. For the short blocklength regime, this decoding strategy can outperform separate-BCJR decoding under certain channel conditions, in addition to reducing decoding complexity. Our findings suggest that the mainstreaming of health economics is driven by innovative, high-quality research, with notable cyclicality in quality ratings that highlights the emergence and impact of distinct subfields within the discipline.

In this paper we study the question of how to reconstruct the state of a power system using Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs). In our previous research we proved that this question has an affirmative answer imposing some rather strict structural assumptions: namely, neglecting the generator rotors saliency and assuming that the stator resistance of the synchronous generator is zero. It was shown in simulations that the performance of the proposed observer was sensitive to these assumptions, observing a transient quality degradation for realistic simulations not imposing these assumptions. Moreover, it was assumed in our previous work that the mechanical power and the field voltage are available for measurement, a scenario that it is not always realistic. In this paper we accomplish two ambitious objectives. First, we propose a new observer that does not impose the simplifying assumptions on the generator model. Secondly, we consider the more realistic scenario where only mechanical power is available for measurement. That is, we solve a problem of state reconstruction of a nonlinear system with partially known input measurements -- that is well-known to be a very challenging task. The design of the first observer relies on two recent developments proposed by the authors, a parameter estimation based approach to the problem of state estimation and the use of the Dynamic Regressor Extension and Mixing (DREM) technique to estimate these parameters. The use of DREM allows us to overcome the problem of lack of persistent excitation that stymies the application of standard parameter estimation designs. On the other hand, the observer for the partial input measurement scenario relies on the clever exploitation of the systems model. Simulation results illustrates the good performance of the proposed observers.

Historical maps are invaluable for analyzing long-term changes in transportation and spatial development, offering a rich source of data for evolutionary studies. However, digitizing and classifying road networks from these maps is often expensive and time-consuming, limiting their widespread use. Recent advancements in deep learning have made automatic road extraction from historical maps feasible, yet these methods typically require large amounts of labeled training data. To address this challenge, we introduce a novel framework that integrates deep learning with geoinformation, computer-based painting, and image processing methodologies. This framework enables the extraction and classification of roads from historical maps using only road geometries without needing road class labels for training. The process begins with training of a binary segmentation model to extract road geometries, followed by morphological operations, skeletonization, vectorization, and filtering algorithms. Synthetic training data is then generated by a painting function that artificially re-paints road segments using predefined symbology for road classes. Using this synthetic data, a deep ensemble is trained to generate pixel-wise probabilities for road classes to mitigate distribution shift. These predictions are then discretized along the extracted road geometries. Subsequently, further processing is employed to classify entire roads, enabling the identification of potential changes in road classes and resulting in a labeled road class dataset. Our method achieved completeness and correctness scores of over 94% and 92%, respectively, for road class 2, the most prevalent class in the two Siegfried Map sheets from Switzerland used for testing. This research offers a powerful tool for urban planning and transportation decision-making by efficiently extracting and classifying roads from historical maps.

30. Creating Automated Quantum-Assisted Solutions for Optimization Problems

When trying to use quantum-enhanced methods for optimization problems, the sheer number of options inhibits its adoption by industrial end users. Expert knowledge is required for the formulation and encoding of the use case, the selection and adaptation of the algorithm, and the identification of a suitable quantum computing backend. Navigating the decision tree spanned by these options is a difficult task and supporting integrated tools are still missing. We propose the QuaST decision tree, a framework that allows to explore, automate and systematically evaluate solution paths. It helps end users to transfer research to their application area, and researchers to gather experience with real-world use cases. Our setup is modular, highly structured and flexible enough to include any kind of preparation, pre-processing and post-processing steps. We develop the guiding principles for the design of the ambitious framework and discuss its implementation. The QuaST decision tree includes multiple complete top-down paths from an application to its fully hybrid quantum solution.

The opening of the gravitational wave window has significantly enhanced our capacity to explore the universe's most extreme and dynamic sector. In the mHz frequency range, a diverse range of compact objects, from the most massive black holes at the farthest reaches of the Universe to the lightest white dwarfs in our cosmic backyard, generate a complex and dynamic symphony of gravitational wave signals. Once recorded by gravitational wave detectors, these unique fingerprints have the potential to decipher the birth and growth of cosmic structures over a wide range of scales, from stellar binaries and stellar clusters to galaxies and large-scale structures. The TianQin space-borne gravitational wave mission is scheduled for launch in the 2030s, with an operational lifespan of five years. We introduce a new two-dimensional string theory defined by coupling two copies of Liouville CFT with complex central charge $c=13\pm i \lambda$ on the worldsheet. This string theory defines a novel, consistent and controllable model of two-dimensional quantum gravity. We use the exact solution of the worldsheet theory to derive stringent constraints on the analytic structure of the string amplitudes as a function of the vertex operator momenta. Together with other worldsheet constraints, this allows us to completely pin down the string amplitudes without explicitly computing the moduli space integrals. We focus on the case of the sphere four-point amplitude and torus one-point amplitude as worked examples. We examine star-formation and dust properties for a sample of 660 galaxies at $1.37\leq z\leq 2.61$ in the MOSDEF survey by dividing them into groups with similarly-shaped spectral energy distributions (SEDs). For each group, we combine the galaxy photometry into a finely-sampled composite SED, and stack their spectra. This method enables the study of more complete galaxy samples, including galaxies with very faint emission lines. We fit these composite SEDs with Prospector to measure the stellar attenuation and SED-based star-formation rates (SFRs). We also derive emission-line properties from the spectral stacks, including Balmer decrements, dust-corrected SFRs, and metallicities. We find that stellar attenuation correlates most strongly with mass, while nebular attenuation correlates strongly with both mass and SFR. Furthermore, the excess of nebular compared to stellar attenuation correlates most strongly with SFR. The highest SFR group has 2 mag of excess nebular attenuation. Our results are consistent with a model in which star-forming regions become more dusty as galaxy mass increases. To explain the increasing excess nebular attenuation, we require a progressively larger fraction of star formation to occur in highly-obscured regions with increasing SFR. This highly-obscured star formation could occur in dusty clumps or central starbursts. Additionally, as each galaxy group represents a different evolutionary stage, we study their locations on the UVJ and SFR-mass diagrams. As mass increases, metallicity and dust attenuation increase, while sSFR decreases. However, the most massive group moves towards the quiescent region of the UVJ diagram, while showing less obscuration, potentially indicating removal of dust., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

34. Leveraging Anthropometric Measurements to Improve Human Mesh Estimation and Ensure Consistent Body Shapes

The basic body shape of a person does not change within a single video. However, most SOTA human mesh estimation (HME) models output a slightly different body shape for each video frame, which results in inconsistent body shapes for the same person. In contrast, we leverage anthropometric measurements like tailors are already obtaining from humans for centuries. We create a model called A2B that converts such anthropometric measurements to body shape parameters of human mesh models. Moreover, we find that finetuned SOTA 3D human pose estimation (HPE) models outperform HME models regarding the precision of the estimated keypoints. We show that applying inverse kinematics (IK) to the results of such a 3D HPE model and combining the resulting body pose with the A2B body shape leads to superior and consistent human meshes for challenging datasets like ASPset or fit3D, where we can lower the MPJPE by over 30 mm compared to SOTA HME models. Further, replacing HME models estimates of the body shape parameters with A2B model results not only increases the performance of these HME models, but also leads to consistent body shapes.

We describe the design and operation of a high-stability Fabry-Perot cavity, for laser stabilization in cavity quantum-electrodynamics experiments. Our design is based on an inexpensive and readily available uniaxial carbon-fiber reinforced polymer tube spacer, featuring an ultra-low thermal expansion coefficient. As a result, our $136\mathrm{mm}$-long cavity, which has a finesse of ${5160}$, shows a coefficient of thermal expansion of $1.6 \times 10^{-6}~\mathrm{K}^{-1}$. Enclosing it in a hermetic chamber at room-pressure and using a simple temperature stabilization, we observe absolute frequency excursions over a full day below $50~\mathrm{MHz}$ for a laser operating at $446.785\mathrm{THz}$. The frequency stability is limited by the imperfect thermal isolation from the environment and can be corrected using a built-in piezo-electric actuator. In addition, we discuss a different variant of this design and identify future improvements. Our system provides a cost-effective and robust solution for transferring laser stability over different wavelengths, as well as for linewidth reduction or spectral filtering of CW laser sources for applications in quantum science., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

In-hand object manipulation is an important capability for dexterous manipulation. In this paper, we introduce a modeling and planning framework for in-hand object reconfiguration, focusing on frictional patch contacts between the robot's palms (or fingers) and the object. Our approach leverages two cooperative patch contacts on either side of the object to iteratively reposition it within the robot's grasp by alternating between sliding and sticking motions. Unlike previous methods that rely on single-point contacts or restrictive assumptions on contact dynamics, our framework models the complex interaction of dual frictional patches, allowing for greater control over object motion. We develop a planning algorithm that computes feasible motions to reorient and re-grasp objects without causing unintended slippage. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in simulation and real-world experiments, showing significant improvements in object stability and pose accuracy across various object geometries., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, conference. We use a novel real-time formulation of the functional renormalization group (FRG) for dynamical systems with reversible mode couplings to study Model H, the conjectured dynamic universality class of the QCD critical point. We emphasize the structural similarities with Model G, conjectured to be the dynamic universality class of the chiral phase transition in the limit of two massless quark flavors. Importantly, our formulation of the real-time FRG preserves all relevant symmetries throughout the FRG flow which, e.g., guarantees the non-renormalization of the reversible mode couplings, as but one exact result. We derive non-perturbative RG flow equations for the kinetic coefficients of both, Model G and H, in parallel, and discuss commonalities and differences in the resulting fixed-point structure and dynamic critical exponents, such as weak-scaling relations which hold in either case versus the characteristic strong scaling of Model G which is absent in Model H., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure

Jupiter's icy moon Ganymede has a tenuous exosphere produced by sputtering and possibly sublimation of water ice. To date, only atomic hydrogen and oxygen have been directly detected in this exosphere. Here, we present observations of Ganymede's CO$_2$ exosphere obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope. CO$_2$ gas is observed over different terrain types, mainly over those exposed to intense Jovian plasma irradiation, as well as over some bright or dark terrains. Despite warm surface temperatures, the CO$_2$ abundance over equatorial subsolar regions is low. CO$_2$ vapor has the highest abundance over the north polar cap of the leading hemisphere, reaching a surface pressure of 1 pbar. From modeling we show that the local enhancement observed near 12 h local time in this region can be explained by the presence of cold traps enabling CO$_2$ adsorption. However, whether the release mechanism in this high-latitude region is sputtering or sublimation remains unclear. The north polar cap of the leading hemisphere also has unique surface-ice properties, probably linked to the presence of the large atmospheric CO2 excess over this region. These CO2 molecules might have been initially released in the atmosphere after the radiolysis of CO$_2$ precursors, or from the sputtering of CO$_2$ embedded in the H$_2$O ice bedrock. Dark terrains (regiones), more widespread on the north versus south polar regions, possibly harbor CO$_2$ precursors. CO$_2$ molecules would then be redistributed via cold trapping on ice-rich terrains of the polar cap and be diurnally released and redeposited on these terrains. E-commerce operations are essentially online, with customer orders arriving dynamically. However, very little is known about the performance of online policies for warehousing with respect to optimality, particularly for order picking and batching operations, which constitute a substantial portion of the total operating costs in warehouses. We aim to close this gap for one of the most prominent dynamic algorithms, namely reoptimization (Reopt), which reoptimizes the current solution each time when a new order arrives. We examine Reopt in the Online Order Batching, Sequencing, and Routing Problem (OOBSRP), in both cases when the picker uses either a manual pushcart or a robotic cart. Moreover, we examine the noninterventionist Reopt in the case of a manual pushcart, wherein picking instructions are provided exclusively at the depot. We establish analytical performance bounds employing worst-case and probabilistic analysis. We demonstrate that, under generic stochastic assumptions, Reopt is almost surely asymptotically optimal and, notably, we validate its near-optimal performance in computational experiments across a broad range of warehouse settings. These results underscore Reopt's relevance as a method for online warehousing applications.

Many socio-economic systems require positive economic growth rates to function properly. Given uncertainty about future growth rates and increasing evidence that economic growth is a driver of social and environmental crises, these growth dependencies pose serious societal challenges. In recent years, more and more researchers have thus tried to identify growth-dependent systems and develop policies to reduce their growth dependence. However, the concept of 'growth dependence' still lacks a consistent definition and operationalization, which impedes more systematic empirical and theoretical research. This article proposes a simple but powerful framework for defining and operationalizing the concept of 'growth dependence' across socio-economic systems. We provide a general definition consisting of four components that can be specified for different empirical cases: (1) the system under investigation, (2) the unit of measurement of growth, (3) the level of growth and (4) the relevant functions or properties of the system under investigation. According to our general definition, a socio-economic system is growth-dependent if it requires a long-term positive growth rate in terms of a unit of economic measurement to maintain all its functions or properties that are relevant within the chosen normative framework. To illustrate the usefulness of our scheme, we apply it to three areas at the heart of the existing literature on growth dependence: employment, social insurance systems and public finance. These case studies demonstrate that whether or not a system is growth-dependent hinges not only on the empirical properties of the system itself but also on the specification of the concept of growth dependence. Understanding how neural networks align with human cognitive processes is a crucial step toward developing more interpretable and reliable AI systems. Motivated by theories of human cognition, this study examines the relationship between \emph{convexity} in neural network representations and \emph{human-machine alignment} based on behavioral data. We identify a correlation between these two dimensions in pretrained and fine-tuned vision transformer models. Our findings suggest that the convex regions formed in latent spaces of neural networks to some extent align with human-defined categories and reflect the similarity relations humans use in cognitive tasks. While optimizing for alignment generally enhances convexity, increasing convexity through fine-tuning yields inconsistent effects on alignment, which suggests a complex relationship between the two. Placing an atom and a molecule in a cavity opens the door to initialize molecular dynamics by exciting a level of the atom. This approach enlarges the range of choosing the light source to trigger molecular dynamics substantially. The interplay of the atomic, molecular and photonic populations gives rise to rich dynamics. The cavity photon plays the role of a mediator between the atom and the molecule and it is found that the photonic population is rather low throughout and its evolution follows that of the molecule. Cavities are known to be subject to losses. In spite of the losses it is demonstrated that the presence of the atom gives rise to a long-lived dynamics which should be of relevance for experimental investigations. The presence of more atoms and molecules is expected to further enrich the dynamics.

Addressing the challenges posed by climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution requires comprehensive monitoring and effective data management strategies that are applicable across various scales in environmental system science. This paper introduces a versatile and transferable digital ecosystem for managing time series data, designed to adhere to the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable). The system is highly adaptable, cloud-ready, and suitable for deployment in a wide range of settings, from small-scale projects to large-scale monitoring initiatives. The ecosystem comprises three core components: the Sensor Management System (SMS) for detailed metadata registration and management; time$.$IO, a platform for efficient time series data storage, transfer, and real-time visualization; and the System for Automated Quality Control (SaQC), which ensures data integrity through real-time analysis and quality assurance. The modular architecture, combined with standardized protocols and interfaces, ensures that the ecosystem can be easily transferred and deployed across different environments and institutions. This approach enhances data accessibility for a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including researchers, policymakers, and the public, while fostering collaboration and advancing scientific research in environmental monitoring.

This paper introduces the combination of Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), Raman spectroscopy (RS) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) in the field of biomedical research. Thereby, the results from RS and LIBS are combined with previous DRS results. These noninvasive optical methods, used together, offer thorough analysis of the absorptive and scattering behaviour, elemental composition, and molecular bindings of tissue, without resulting in considerable harm or changes to the sample or the requirement of markers. The study centres on applying this triad of techniques to tissues affected by Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI), a condition characterised by reduced hip mobility due to developmental deformities of the hip joint. The research results in a biochemical pathway model of the condition causing the red staining caused by FAI which origin was unknown until now. This proves that this approach may have significant implications for numerous medical applications and support in exploring complex chemical and biochemical pathways.

The aim of this retrospective study was to present an epidemiological overview of paediatric nonelectric-scooter-related injuries, focusing on changes in injury mechanism and frequency. A retrospective, descriptive data analysis at a Level I trauma centre, including patients aged from 0 to 18 years injured by riding nonelectric scooters, was performed. The observation period ranged from January 2015 to December 2022. The total study population consisted of 983 (mean age: 7.9 ± 4.0 years) children and adolescents, with most patients being male (800/983; 81.4%). The frequency of nonelectric scooter injuries was relatively consistent over the observation period. Patients sustained mostly minor injuries (lacerations, bone contusions, sprains) (527/983; 53.6%), followed by head injuries (238/983; 24.5%), limb fractures (166/983; 16.9%) and trunk injuries (52/983; 5.3%). However, a few patients sustained severe injuries, including skull fractures (7/238; 2.9%), intracranial haematoma (4/238; 1.7%) or lacerations of abdominal organs (4/52; 7.7%). This study presented a consistently high frequency of scooter injuries in children. Children under 15 years were the most affected by scooter-related injuries. Although most injuries were minor, serious injuries occurred that should not be underestimated. Hence, we emphasise the use of protection gear and recommend raising awareness among parents and children.

Summary: Background: Early death after cancer surgery is higher in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) compared with in high-income countries, yet the impact of facility characteristics on early postoperative outcomes is unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the association between hospital infrastructure, resource availability, and processes on early outcomes after cancer surgery worldwide. Methods: A multimethods analysis was performed as part of the GlobalSurg 3 study—a multicentre, international, prospective cohort study of patients who had surgery for breast, colorectal, or gastric cancer. The primary outcomes were 30-day mortality and 30-day major complication rates. Potentially beneficial hospital facilities were identified by variable selection to select those associated with 30-day mortality. Adjusted outcomes were determined using generalised estimating equations to account for patient characteristics and country-income group, with population stratification by hospital. Findings: Between April 1, 2018, and April 23, 2019, facility-level data were collected for 9685 patients across 238 hospitals in 66 countries (91 hospitals in 20 high-income countries; 57 hospitals in 19 upper-middle-income countries; and 90 hospitals in 27 low-income to lower-middle-income countries). The availability of five hospital facilities was inversely associated with mortality: ultrasound, CT scanner, critical care unit, opioid analgesia, and oncologist.
