For forecasting the power output of a photovoltaic (PV) power plant, solar irradiance forecasts are an essential input. Forecasts generated from different sources and models such as satellite data, numerical weather models, or irradiance measurements, perform differently depending on the forecast horizon. An optimized forecast for each horizon can be derived by combining several different source forecasts via a machine learning (ML) model to create a resulting ‘blended’ forecast. The training of an ML blending model requires power generation data of the considered PV power plant as a target variable. Typically, power measurements from the plant are used for this purpose. However, poor quality or limited availability of power measurements will lead to low quality blended forecasts as a result. In this work we consider intra-day forecasts, obtained from blending numerical weather predictions with satellite-derived forecasts, for a large PV plant with a capacity of 1 GW. The plant is frequently subject to curtailment by grid operators, which limits the reliability of its power measurements. This poses a significant challenge for the optimization of the blending model, resulting in a notable underestimation of the power forecasted by the model in high-power situations. We present an approach to improve forecast blending by using satellite derived power as a replacement for measurements in model training. We evaluate the effect of this replacement for two different ML blending models: a Huber linear regressor and a neural network. The performance of the different models is characterized by employing commonly used metrics such as RMSE and BIAS, as well as a distribution-oriented evaluation framework.

For the design of façade and roof glazing, loads due to dead weight, climatic loads (IGU - pressure differences), wind and snow are well investigated and are considered in engineering practice. However, glass constructions are also ex-posed to thermally induced stresses due to direct solar irradiation. The standards and guidelines available so far, both nationally and at the European level, are partly outdated or contain only simplified instructions and specifications for calculating thermally induced stresses of façade and roof glazing. Within the research project, a variety of façade glazing configurations and additionally building-integrated (BIPV) glass-glass photovoltaic modules, for example as a façade cladding rear ventilated, are being investigated by means of numerical simulation and subsequent experimental validation with up-to-date German meteorological data. The purpose of the project is to reduce or prevent the occurrence of thermally induced glass breakage (thermal breakage) through European standardization. In this way, economic damage can be avoided. The present paper provides an insight into the two-years lasting joint research project, including the current status of science and technology, goals, structure and process, and descriptions of work packages. Results, such as the collection of the various influencing factors, meteorological data, and results from numerical simulations, will be presented after the project has finished at the end of September 2022.

PV-Hochrechnungsverfahren dienen zur Abschätzung von wetterabhängiger PV-Einspeisung in das Stromnetz und sind bereits heutzutage ein essenzieller Teil im Netzbetrieb. Für die Qualität der Hochrechnung ist die Kombination aus den Eingangsdaten und den verwendeten Hochrechnungsalgorithmen entscheidend. Bisherige Hochrechnungsverfahren beruhen meist auf der Nutzung aktueller Leistungsmesswerte von Referenzanlagen in Kombination mit Informationen zum Ort und zur installierten Leistung aller Anlagen [2]. Im Rahmen des BMWi-geförderten Projekts Solare Vorhersagen für die Netz- und Marktintegration von Solarenergie (SOLREV), der deutschen Beteiligung am IEA PVPS Task 16, werden relevante Fragestellungen zur Weiterentwicklung von PV-Hochrechnungen erarbeitet. Fraunhofer IEE und Fraunhofer ISE vergleichen dazu verschiedene Methoden für die Hochrechnung des PV-Stroms. Dieser Vergleich beinhaltet folgende Methoden: Simple Upscaling, Equal Weights, Inverse Distance Weighting, Linear Least-Squares Regression (LSQLIN), Satelliten-basierte physikalische Simulation und Extreme Learning Machines (ELM), wobei unterschiedliche Eingangsvariablen genutzt werden (i) Leistungsmessungen von Referenzparks, (ii) Globalstrahlung (GHI) aus Satellitendaten und (iii) eine Kombination von beiden. Als Zielgröße für die Bewertung und zum Trainieren der Hochrechnungsverfahren stehen Einspeise-überführungszeitreihen von lastgangvermessenen Anlagen (SOL) für die Region Bayernwerk zur Verfügung. Zusätzlich stellt das Fraunhofer ISE einen Datensatz mit Globalstrahlung aus Satellitendaten bereit. Der Betrachtungszeitraum ist das komplette Jahr 2018, wobei für Maschinelle Lernverfahren, die Optimierungsschritte und das Post-Prozessieren vier Test- und Trainingszeiträume genutzt werden und die vier Testzeiträume (Januar - März, April - Juni, Juli - September, Oktober - Dezember) anschließend zu einer Zeitreihe zusammengefügt werden. Zur Auswertung der Hochrechnungsverfahren werden die Auswertungsmetriken Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) und Mean Bias Error (MBE) verwendet. Ein starker MBE bei Methoden, welche nicht auf die Zielgröße trainiert werden, macht eine simple Bias-Korrektur notwendig, wodurch der RMSE bereits stark reduziert werden kann. Der RMSE schwankt zw. 0.86 % und 4.84 %, wobei Methoden mit Referenzparkmessungen und GHI als Eingangsvariablen den geringsten RMSE erzielen. Der niedrigste RMSE zeigt sich bei LSQLIN mit Referenzparkmessungen und Einstrahlungswerten aus Satellitendaten. LSQLIN zeigt auch den tiefsten RMSE von 1.04 % wenn nur Referenzparkmessungen als Input genutzt werden. Ein weiterer Vorteil von LSQLIN ist, dass diese Methode viel weniger rechenintensiv ist als z. B. ein ELM. Satellitendaten-basierte Methoden haben den Vorteil, dass unabhängig von vorhandenen Leistungsmesswerten eine Hochrechnung berechnet werden kann. In zukünftigen Arbeiten werden simulierte PV-Leistungsmesswerte mithilfe von Satellitendaten als Input für verschiedene Methoden genutzt und deren Einfluss auf die Hochrechnung quantifiziert. Außerdem wird die Summe aller Referenzanlagen als Zielwert und nur eine Teilmenge aller Anlagen für die Hochrechnung genutzt, um die Abhängigkeit der Resultate von den vorhandenen Inputdaten quantifizieren zu können. 38th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 515-520, The importance of predicting outdoor performance of tandem solar devices is growing, as silicon-based tandem solar cells approach industrialization. A 2-terminal configuration has the advantage of lower parasitic absorption and less electrical wiring at module level as compared to a 4-terminal device. However, a 2-terminal tandem device is sensitive to current-mismatch losses. As a result, there is a strong interest to determine the outdoor energy yield in addition to the STC efficiency in order to evaluate the real impact of current-mismatch losses on the energy yield. We compare the energy yield, harvesting efficiency and performance ratio of a silicon-based dual junction solar cell in 2- and 4-terminal configuration to a silicon single junction device for different locations in the world. We find that changes due to current mismatch do not lead to a relevant decrease in harvesting efficiency in 2-terminal tandem solar cells and thus are no reason to principally prefer 4-terminal tandem solar cells. The assumption that current mismatch might be a severe issue in 2-terminal tandems does not hold – they show similar performance as silicon single-junction devices. Note that the performance ratio of 4-terminal tandems shows a lower dependence on location than 2-terminal tandems as well as single junction solar cells, and thus for certain locations show an exceptionally high performance ratio.
