En las últimas ocho décadas la comprensión de los mecanismos físicos que ocurren en la superficie límite entre dos materiales diferentes ha estado en constante evolución. Su interés radica en la ruptura de la simetría cristalina y la reducción de la coordinación atómica, las cuales producen modificaciones en el tipo y la ocupación orbital de los átomos en la interfaz. El estudio de los fenómenos interfaciales dio inicio a la ciencia de superficies, cuyo avance ha sido significativo en la medida en que aparecen nuevas y sofisticadas herramientas, tanto para la fabricación controlada de interfaces, como para la caracterización en el rango de la monocapa atómica. El interés se ha centrado no solo en el estímulo científico si no en el tecnológico, sobre todo en el contexto de los dispositivos electrónicos y, más recientemente, en una amplia gama de aplicaciones interdisciplinarias, como las biointerfaces, los detectores y actuadores ultrasensibles de última generación y el mejoramiento de las propiedades tribológicas. En este trabajo presentamos, primero, un contexto histórico de los diferentes fenómenos interfaciales que han ido surgiendo y su influencia en las propiedades que exhiben donde quiera que hay una interfaz, como en el caso de junturas, multicapas y heteroestructuras. Presentamos, asimismo, los avances en los sistemas de superredes magnéticas de importancia en el mejoramiento de la densidad de información de los discos duros, y discutimos sobre los estados interfaciales electrónicos y magnéticos y las nuevas funcionalidades en las interfaces de heterojunturas basadas en óxidos complejos. Por último, resaltamos algunos avances y perspectivas en el campo de la ciencia de superficies.

En el siguiente trabajo se presentan las actuaciones arqueológicas efectuadas en la primera excavación programada en el yacimiento arqueológico de la ermita de la Virgen del Pero (Peralta, Navarra), que han sido promovidas por el Ayuntamiento de Peralta (Ribera del Arga-Aragón). Los objetivos principales del proyecto se centran en la investigación, documentación y difusión de este importante yacimiento histórico y patrimonial del municipio. De esta manera, se pretende poner a disposición de sus habitantes la posibilidad de acercarse, conocer y participar de su patrimonio histórico y arqueológico a través del estudio científico.

Este trabajo recoge los resultados del Proyecto Cuatrienal 2018-2021, Grecs i comunitats locals a l’entorn d’Empúries: Dinàmiques del paisatge, estratègies de poblament i contactes culturals a l’antic estuari del Ter i el Fluvià (segles X-II a.C.) (CLT009/18/00087), aprobado y financiado por el Departament de Cultura de la Generalitat de Catalunya. Asimismo, algunos de estos estudios forman parte del proyecto Dietas, formas de consumo y movilidad en zonas de contacto (PID2019-105659GB-I00/ AEI/10.13039/501100011033), financiado por el Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación. Por último debemos reseñar el apoyo recibido por parte del proyecto Maritime Verbindungen und ihr Einfluss auf den antiken Seehandel - Nautische Simulationen als Grundlage historischer Forschungen (449943696), financiado por la Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)., Los grupos humanos que ocuparon el entorno del paleoestuario emporitano durante la Edad del Hierro han sido tradicionalmente marginalizados y convertidos en actores históricos pasivos. El énfasis en su papel como proveedores también ha llevado a que la investigación arqueológica se centre demasiado en sus cultivos y en la forma en que almacenaban los excedentes alimentarios. Combinando diferentes métodos de análisis arqueológico, una serie de actuaciones realizadas en extensas áreas de Muntanya Rodona, Vilanera y Les Corts han aportado nuevas evidencias que permiten dibujar una imagen más rica y compleja sobre las dinámicas que experimentaron los paisajes rurales situados en el entorno de Emporion a lo largo del I milenio a.C. Los datos obtenidos sugieren algunas hipótesis que, aunque son preliminares, permiten ir más allá de la visión excesivamente simplista centrada en los conceptos de chora y jerarquía territorial que, tradicionalmente, han confi- gurado la percepción de los análisis de estos contextos. Este trabajo también analiza los procesos de transformación que tu- vieron lugar en esta zona desde una perspectiva de larga duración, examinando así los cambios y pervivencias que influyeron en las estrategias de ocupación y explotación que implementaron diversos grupos humanos establecidos en esta zona., The human populations that lived in the area around the Emporitan palaeoestuary during the Iron Age have historically been marginalized and reduced to supporting roles in history. Archaeological studies have placed too much attention on their crops and methods of food surplus storage as a result of the emphasis placed on their function as providers. A number of archaeological interventions made in large areas of Muntanya Rodona, Vilanera, and Les Corts have produced new evidence that has allowed us to construct a richer and more complex picture of the dynamics that the rural landscapes in the Emporion area experienced during the first millennium BC. The data acquired indicate some first ideas that, while tentative, allow us to move beyond the too simple approach focused on the concepts of chora and territorial hierarchy that have historically dominated the perception of the research of these contexts. High purity TiO2 and CuO powders were synthesized by the Pechini method, an inexpensive and easy-to-implement procedure to synthetize metal oxides. The variables of synthesis were the ethylene glycol:citric acid molar ratio and the pH. High reproducibility of the anatase and tenorite phase was obtained for all synthesis routes. The degree of purity of the powders was confirmed by XRD, FTIR, UV-vis absorption and XPS spectra. SEM and TEM images revealed the powders are composed by micrometer grains that can have a spherical shape (only in the TiO2) or formed by a non-compacted nanocrystalline conglomerate. FTIR spectra only vibrational modes associated to the TiO2 or CuO with a nanoparticle behavior. UV-vis absorption spectra revealed the values of maximum absorbance percentage of both systems are reached in the ultraviolet region, with percentages above 83 % throughout the entire visible light spectrum for the CuO system, a relevant result for solar cell applications. Finally, XPS experiments allow the observation of the valence bands and the calculation of the energy bands of all oxides.

Este trabajo muestra la influencia de diferentes condiciones de tratamientos térmicos sobre el crecimiento de nanoestructuras de óxidos de cobre, las cuales se forman al someter una película de cobre de 388 ± 7 nm de espesor a una temperatura de 400 °C en atmósfera de aire. Las capas delgadas de cobre se crecieron sobre sustratos de silicio, mediante la técnica de evaporación térmica. Los parámetros involucrados en este estudio son: la condición inicial para la cual las muestras llegan a 400 °C, es decir, con rampa y sin rampa de calentamiento y el tiempo de recocido. Basándose en los resultados obtenidos por microscopía electrónica de barrido y difracción de rayos X, fue posible establecer que los tratamientos térmicos, generan un cambio tanto en la estructura cristalina como en la morfología de la capa de Cu, mediado por la formación de nanoestructuras de carácter mixto, conformadas por una mezcla de fases referentes a Cu metálico, Cuprita (Cu2O) y Tenorita (CuO), siendo el CuO la fase mayoritaria en todas las muestras nanoestructuradas. El tamaño de grano promedio se encuentra en un rango entre 21 – 53 nm y muestra una dependencia con el tipo de tratamiento térmico. Por otra parte, las propiedades ópticas del material fueron evaluadas por espectroscopia UV-VIS, evidenciando bandas de absorción en ambas regiones (ultravioleta y visible), las cuales fueron analizadas por el método de extrapolación de Tauc; obteniendo valores para la banda prohibida entre (1.40 – 1.47) eV, asociados a una conductividad tipo-P propia de esta clase de óxidos metálicos semiconductores.

El té verde y el té de jengibre se han relacionado con el mejoramiento en el rendimiento deportivo, esto es de importancia para los jugadores de futbol para lograr un mejor desempeño en el terreno de juego. Objetivo: evaluar la influencia del consumo de té verde y té de jengibre en el rendimiento deportivo en el futbolista. Método: ensayo clínico controlado cegado en 19 futbolistas de 14 a 19 años; utilizando 5 g de té verde y 30 g de té de jengibre, administrados en cuatro entrenamientos al menos cinco minutos antes del entrenamiento. Para evaluar el rendimiento se aplicaron pre/post maniobra la prueba “T”, el test de Cooper y el test de Ruffier-Dickson, pruebas que evalúan el rendimiento del futbolista. Resultados: no se encontró una diferencia estadísticamente significativa entre los tratamientos. El té de jengibre tuvo un impacto negativo en la resistencia de los participantes, mientras que el té verde obtuvo resultados positivos (p= 0.006) en la velocidad y agilidad de los futbolistas. Conclusión: para mejorar el rendimiento deportivo del futbolista es recomendable utilizar el té verde y considerar los efectos secundarios del té de jengibre.

La singular trayectoria vital de Lorenza Longo ha comenzado a ser estudiada y puesta en valor por la historiografía especializada a raíz de la reciente beatificación de una mujer catalana de nacimiento, paralítica en su juventud, pero aun así una mujer con un empuje vital y una voluntad de servicio que la llevó a involucrarse en la asistencia sanitaria a los más necesitados de la ciudad de Nápoles, azotados por las epidemias y donde supo aglutinar a los círculos de la nobleza local para la creación del famoso hospital de los Incurables, obra social y asistencial con absoluta vigencia en la actualidad después de quinientos años de ininterrumpido servicio a la comunidad.

Respiratory chains are crucial for cellular energy conversion and consist of multi‐subunit complexes that can assemble into supercomplexes. These structures have been intensively characterized in various organisms, but their physiological roles remain unclear. Here, we elucidate their function by leveraging a high‐resolution structural model of yeast respiratory supercomplexes that allowed us to inhibit supercomplex formation by mutation of key residues in the interaction interface. Analyses of a mutant defective in supercomplex formation, which still contains fully functional individual complexes, show that the lack of supercomplex assembly delays the diffusion of cytochrome c between the separated complexes, thus reducing electron transfer efficiency. Consequently, competitive cellular fitness is severely reduced in the absence of supercomplex formation and can be restored by overexpression of cytochrome c. In sum, our results establish how respiratory supercomplexes increase the efficiency of cellular energy conversion, thereby providing an evolutionary advantage for aerobic organisms., Mitochondrial respiratory supercomplexes are found in various organisms, however their physiological function remains elusive. This study reveals that supercomplexes enhance mitochondrial electron transfer, resulting in increased competitive fitness.

We studied in detail the in-plane magnetic properties of heterostructures based on a ferroelectric BaTiO3 overlayer deposited on a ferromagnetic La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 film grown epitaxially on pseudocubic (001)-oriented SrTiO3, (LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2TaAlO6)0.7 and LaAlO3 substrates. In this configuration, the combination of both functional perovskites constitutes an artificial multiferroic system with potential applications in spintronic devices based on the magnetoelectric effect. La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 single layers and BaTiO3/La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 bilayers using the pulsed-laser deposition technique. We analyzed the films structurally through X-ray reciprocal space maps and high-angle annular dark field microscopy, and magnetically via thermal demagnetization curves and in-plane magnetization versus applied magnetic field loops at room temperature. Our results indicate that the BaTiO3 layer induces an additional strain in the La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 layers close to their common interface. The presence of BaTiO3 on the surface of tensile-strained La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 films transforms the in-plane biaxial magnetic anisotropy present in the single layer into an in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. Our experimental evidence suggests that this change in the magnetic anisotropy only occurs in tensile-strained La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 film and is favored by an additional strain on the La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 layer promoted by the BaTiO3 film. Background Patients with a first episode psychosis (FEP) who are admitted for the first time to a psychiatric hospital frequently have experienced prior psychological trauma. Additionally, 40–80% develop posttraumatic stress symptoms, which are summarized as a post-psychotic post-traumatic syndrome (PPS). Eye Movement Desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy could be an effective psychotherapy to treat a PPS and prior psychological traumas in this population. Objectives To assess if EMDR therapy leads to: 1) a reduction of relapses after intervention, 2) an improvement of trauma-related, psychotic and affective symptoms, 3) an improvement of overall functioning, and 4) an improvement in quality of life. Methods This is a multicenter phase II rater-blinded randomized controlled trial in which 80 FEP patients with a history of psychological trauma will be randomly assigned to EMDR (n = 40) or to TAU (n = 40). Traumatic events will be measured by the Global Assessment of Posttraumatic Stress Questionnaire, the Cumulative Trauma Screening, the Impact of Event Scale-Revised, the Dissociative Experiences Scale, the Childhood Trauma Scale, the Holmes–Rahe Life Stress Inventory, and the Dissociative Experiences Questionnaire. Clinical symptomatology will be evaluated using the Suicide and Drug Consumption module of the International Neuropsychiatric Interview, Structured Clinical Interview for Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, Young’s Scale for Mania Evaluation, and Beck Depression II Questionnaire. Functionality will be assessed with the Global Assessment of Functioning and the Quality of Life with the Standardized Instrument developed by the EuroQol Group. The cognitive insight and adherence to the treatment will be assessed with the Beck Cognitive Insight Scale and the Drug Attitude Inventory. All variables will be measured at baseline, post-treatment and at 12-month follow-up. Conclusion This study will provide evidence of whether EMDR therapy is effective in reducing trauma and clinical symptoms, reducing relapses and in improving functionality and quality of life in patients with FEP and a history of trauma. Polycrystalline τ-MnAlC thin films were produced by thermal evaporation technique in one-step deposition and using as target materials a homogeneous τ-MnAlC(100%) and a heterogeneous e-MnAlC(73.9%)/τ-MnAlC(22.0%)/Al6Mn(4.1%) alloy, both keeping the same atomic percent for each constituent element. X-ray diffraction patterns evidence all films present a high concentration of the desired τ-phase. A microscopy analysis shows the thermal evaporation induces an island-type deposition of nanocrystalline grains with an average size of 9 nm. A hysteresis loop shows the highest concentration τ-MnAlC film exhibits a superparamagnetic-like behavior, an extremely important nanomagnetic state for the development of actuators and magnetic field sensor.

International audience; Al/CuO energetic structure are attractive materials due to their high thermal output and propensity to produce gas. They are widely used to bond components or as next generation of MEMS igniters. In such systems, the reaction process is largely dominated by the outward migration of oxygen atoms from the CuO matrix toward the aluminum layers, and many recent studies have already demonstrated that the interfacial nanolayer between the two reactive layers plays a major role in the material properties. Here we demonstrate that the ALD deposition of a thin ZnO layer on the CuO prior to Al deposition (by sputtering) leads to a substantial increase in the efficiency of the overall reaction. The CuO/ZnO/Al foils generate 98% of their theoretical enthalpy within a single reaction at 900 °C, whereas conventional ZnO-free CuO/Al foils produce only 78% of their theoretical enthalpy, distributed over two distinct reaction steps at 550 °C and 850 °C. Combining high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry, we characterized the successive formation of a thin zinc aluminate (ZnAl2O4) and zinc oxide interfacial layers, which act as an effective barrier layer against oxygen diffusion at low temperature.

The quest for impact damage tolerant laminates by tailoring stacking sequences has led to nonconventional laminates whose ply sequences are not limited to 0, ±45 and 90°. Departing from the hypothesis that compression after impact (CAI) strength is impaired by the presence of delaminations, a ply sequence was defined by selecting the mismatch angles between plies so as to maintain a central sublaminate with no, or small, delaminations. An experimental test campaign was devoted to validate this hypothesis. To that purpose, baseline and blocked-ply laminates were included in the study. Specimens were tested under low velocity impact followed by compression according to ASTM standards. Delaminations were identified with Ultrasonic C-Scan. Deposition of Al on ZnO is used for a number of electronic and catalytic devices as well as for nanoenergetic materials. The interface structure and chemical composition often control the performance of devices. In this study, in situ infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, and low energy ion scattering are combined to investigate the initial stage of interface formation between Al and ZnO. We find that (a) the interface is highly inhomogeneous with discontinuous Al patches, leaving ∼10% of the ZnO surface uncovered even after deposition of an equivalent of 11 nm-thick Al film; (b) upon Al deposition, Al reduces ZnO by forming Al2O3 and releasing Zn to the surface, and this process continues as more Al is deposited; (c) the reduced surface Zn atoms readily desorb at 150 °C; and (d) at higher temperature (>600 °C) all Al is oxidized as a result of mass transport. Despite considerable knowledge on the genetic basis of mitochondrial disorders, their pathophysiological consequences remain poorly understood. We previously used two-dimensional difference gel electrophoresis analyses to define a protein profile characteristic for respiratory chain complex III-deficiency that included a significant overexpression of cytosolic gelsolin (GSN), a cytoskeletal protein that regulates the severing and capping of the actin filaments. Biochemical and immunofluorescence assays confirmed a specific increase of GSN levels in the mitochondria from patients' fibroblasts and from transmitochondrial cybrids with complex III assembly defects. A similar effect was obtained in control cells upon treatment with antimycin A in a dose-dependent manner, showing that the enzymatic inhibition of complex III is sufficient to promote the mitochondrial localization of GSN. Mitochondrial subfractionation showed the localization of GSN to the mitochondrial outer membrane, where it interacts with the voltage-dependent anion channel protein 1 (VDAC1). In control cells, VDAC1 was present in five stable oligomeric complexes, which showed increased levels and a modified distribution pattern in the complex III-deficient cybrids. Downregulation of GSN expression induced cell death in both cell types, in parallel with the specific accumulation of VDAC1 dimers and the release of mitochondrial cytochrome c into the cytosol, indicating a role for GSN in the oligomerization of VDAC complexes and in the prevention of apoptosis. Our results demonstrate that respiratory chain complex III dysfunction induces the physiological upregulation and mitochondrial location of GSN, probably to promote cell survival responses through the modulation of the oligomeric state of the VDAC complexes.

The present work addresses the damage mechanisms of polymer-based laminated composite materials under different hygrothermal conditions by means of the translaminar fracture toughness using Double Edge Notched Tensile tests of a cross-ply laminate manufactured with T800S/M21 carbon/epoxy material.Three different conditions were considered: as received-room temperature (AR/RT), wet-room temperature (WET/RT), and wet-high temperature (WET/HOT). The highest fracture toughness was for WET/HOT and the lowest for WET/RT. To observe the corresponding failure mechanisms, Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM) analysis was performed. The SEM inspections show that the pull-out length and the frictional coefficient are the most significant parameters that best explain the differences observed in the crack propagation and the fracture toughness. For AR/RT, the suitable adhesion between components allows stresses to be transferred from the matrix to the fibers, so the crack is practically continuous in the same failure plane and the pull-out is barely visible. However, higher pull-out lengths can be observed in WET/RT and WET/HOT, especially in the second one. For WET/RT, the crack surface shows fiber bundles at different pull-out lengths, while for WET/HOT fibers are broken individually at longer pull-out lengths. According to the moisture absorption in WET/RT and WET/HOT, a lower frictional coefficient is thought to slightly reduce the fracture toughness, which can be compared between AR/RT and WET/RT. Nevertheless, the highest fracture toughness is caused by the large pull-out lengths in WET/HOT tests, despite the reduction of the frictional coefficient The authors acknowledge the financial support of the Spanish Government under project MAT2013-46749-R. It is a pleasure for the editorial committee and scientific committee to present the memoirs and book of summaries of our II Colombian Congress and III Latin American Congress of Mastozoology, held in the city of Bogotá, Colombia, in the facilities of the Francisco José de Caldas District University, Macarena Headquarters, between December 1 and 5, 2015. This event represents a significant advance and a natural product of the growth and natural development of our mastozoological discipline both nationally and Latin American, which also shows the strong growth and progress of the Science of our region. With more than 400 oral presentations and posters, from more than 16 countries and about 600 participants, this Congress becomes the maximum event of mastozoology in the country and a very significant contribution to Latin American mastozoology., Es un gusto para el comité editorial y comité científico presentar las memorias y libro de resúmenes de nuestro II Congreso Colombiano y III Congreso Latinoamericano de Mastozoología, realizado en la ciudad de Bogotá, Colombia, en las instalaciones de la Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas,Sede Macarena, entre el 1 y 5 de diciembre de 2015. Este evento representa un avance significativo y un producto natural del crecimiento y desarrollo natural de nuestra disciplina mastozoológica tanto a nivel nacional como Latinoamericano, lo que además muestra el fuerte crecimiento y avance de la ciencia de nuestra región. Con más de 400 ponencias orales y posters, de más de 16 países y cerca de 600 participantes, este Congreso se convierte en el máximo evento de la mastozoología en el país y un muy significativo aporte a la mastozoología Latinoamericana.

El acueducto vestibular dilatado es el hallazgo más encontrado en imágenes radiológicas de pacientes con hipoacusia neurosensorial (1,2). La frecuencia del síndrome de acueducto vestibular dilatado continúa siendo subestimada, situación que ha llevado a subdiagnosticar pacientes con esta condición. El propósito del reporte de caso y su discusión es aclarar los aspectos más importantes del diagnóstico clínico, audiológico e imagenológico de esta patología, así como considerarla parte del diagnóstico diferencial de pacientes en estudio de hipoacusia

International audience; The integration of high-purity nano-objects on substrates remains a great challenge for addressing scaling-up issues in nanotechnology. For instance, grafting gold nanoparticles (NPs) on zinc oxide films, a major step process for catalysis or photovoltaic applications, still remains difficult to master. We report a modified photodeposition (P-D) approach that achieves tight control of the NPs size (7.5 ± 3 nm), shape (spherical), purity, and high areal density (3500 ± 10 NPs/μm 2) on ZnO films. This deposition method is also compatible with large ZnO surface areas. Combining electronic microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, we demonstrate that growth occurs primarily in confined spaces (between the grains of the ZnO film), resulting in gold NPs embedded within the ZnO surface grains thus establishing a unique NPs/surface arrangement. This modified P-D process offers a powerful method to control nanoparticle morphology and areal density and to achieve strong Au interaction with the metal oxide substrate. This work also highlights the key role of ZnO surface morphology to control the NPs density and their size distribution. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate an increase of the ZnO photocatalytic activity due to high densities of Au NPs, opening applications for the decontamination of water or the photoreduction of water for hydrogen production.

We have analyzed the cellular pathways and metabolic adaptations that take place in primary skin fibroblasts from patients with mutations in BCS1L, a major genetic cause of mitochondrial complex III enzyme deficiency. Mutant fibroblasts exhibited low oxygen consumption rates and intracellular ATP levels, indicating that the main altered molecular event probably is a limited respiration-coupled ATP production through the OXPHOS system. Two-dimensional DIGE and MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrometry analyses unambiguously identified 39 proteins whose expression was significantly altered in complex III-deficient fibroblasts. Extensive statistical and cluster analyses revealed a protein profile characteristic for the BCS1L mutant fibroblasts that included alterations in energy metabolism, cell signaling and gene expression regulation, cytoskeleton formation and maintenance, and intracellular stress responses. The physiological validation of the predicted functional adaptations of human cultured fibroblasts to complex III deficiency confirmed the up-regulation of glycolytic enzyme activities and the accumulation of branched-chain among other amino acids, suggesting the activation of anaerobic glycolysis and cellular catabolic states, in particular protein catabolism, together with autophagy as adaptive responses to mitochondrial respiratory chain dysfunction and ATP deficiency. Our data point to an overall metabolic and genetic reprogramming that could contribute to explain the clinical manifestations of complex III deficiency in patients. Biological significance: Despite considerable knowledge about their genetic origins, the pathophysiological mechanisms that contribute to the clinical manifestations of mitochondrial disorders remain poorly understood. Epitaxial strain alters the physical properties of thin films grown on single crystal substrates. Thin film oxides are particularly apt for strain engineering new functionalities in ferroic materials. In the case of La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (LCMO) thin films, here we show the first experimental images obtained by electron holography demonstrating that epitaxial strain induces the segregation of a flat and uniform nonferromagnetic layer with antiferromagnetic (AFM) character at the top surface of a ferromagnetic (FM) layer, the whole film being chemical and structurally homogeneous at room temperature. For different substrates and growth conditions the tetragonality of LCMO at room temperature, defined as τ = |c – a|/a, is the driving force for a phase coexistence above an approximate critical value of τC ≈ 0.024. Theoretical calculations prove that the increased tetragonality changes the energy balance of the FM and AFM ground states in strained LCMO, enabling the formation of magnetically inhomogeneous states. Thermite multilayered films have the potential to be used as local high intensity heat sources for a variety of applications. Improving the ability of researchers to more rapidly develop Micro Electro Mechanical Systems devices based on thermite multilayer films requires predictive modeling in which an understanding of the relationship between the properties (ignition and flame propagation), the multilayer structure and composition (bilayer thicknesses, ratio of reactants, and nature of interfaces), and aspects related to integration (substrate conductivity and ignition apparatus) is achieved. Assembling all these aspects, this work proposes an original 2D diffusion-reaction modeling framework to predict the ignition threshold and reaction dynamics of Al/CuO multilayered thin films. This model takes into consideration that CuO first decomposes into Cu2O, and then, released oxygen diffuses across the Cu2O and Al2O3 layers before reacting with pure Al to form Al2O3. This model is experimentally validated from ignition and flame velocity data acquired on Al/CuO multilayers deposited on a Kapton layer. This paper discusses, for the first time, the importance of determining the ceiling temperature above which the multilayers disintegrate, possibly before their complete combustion, thus severely impacting the reaction front velocity and energy release. This work provides a set of heating surface areas to obtain the best ignition conditions, i.e., with minimal ignition power, as a function of the substrate type.

International audience; In situ deposition of a thin (∼5 nm) layer of copper between Al and CuO layers is shown to increase the overall nanolaminate material reactivity. A combination of transmission electron microscopy imaging, in situ infrared spectroscopy, low energy ion scattering measurements, and first-principles calculations reveals that copper spontaneously diffuses into aluminum layers (substantially less in CuO layers). The formation of an interfacial Al:Cu alloy with melting temperature lower than pure Al metal is responsible for the enhanced reactivity, opening a route to controlling the stochiometry of the aluminum layer and increasing the reactivity of the nanoenergetic multilayer systems in general.

We have combined optical and focused ion beam lithographies to produce large aspect-ratio (length-to-width >300) single-crystal nanowires of La 2/3Ca1/3MnO3 that preserve their functional properties. Remarkably, an enhanced magnetoresistance value of 34% in an applied magnetic field of 0.1 T in the narrowest 150 nm nanowire is obtained. The strain release at the edges together with a destabilization of the insulating regions is proposed to account for this behavior.
