Introducción: Las gestaciones múltiples, principalmente las monocoriales, tienen mayor riesgo de complicaciones como restricción selectiva del crecimiento y síndrome de transfusión feto-fetal, siendo de baja frecuencia los eventos vasculares cerebrales diagnosticados prenatalmente sin pérdida fetal, por lo cual reportamos el siguiente caso. Caso clínico: Mujer de 25 años en su segunda gestación, con embarazo gemelar monocorial biamniótico. Durante el seguimiento ecográfico de la semana 27 + 5 se encuentran fetos con restricción del crecimiento intrauterino y una semana después se observa el gemelo 2 con restricción severa del crecimiento e imagen ecográfica sugestiva de evento hemorrágico intracerebral masivo, flujo intermitente en la arteria umbilical y anemia fetal. Dado el riesgo inminente de muerte, se remite al servicio de urgencias. Por deterioro clínico se finaliza la gestación en la semana 29. El gemelo afectado fallece al sexto día de vida. Conclusión: La gestación gemelar monocorial tiene un alto riesgo de complicaciones, por lo que requiere un seguimiento estricto. Los eventos hemorrágicos son poco frecuentes y pueden estar asociados a patologías placentarias, fetales y maternas.

Inulin is a carbohydrate that belongs to fructans; due to its health benefits, it is widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries. In this research, cabuya (Agave americana) was employed to obtain inulin by pulsed electric field-assisted extraction (PEFAE) and FTIR analysis confirmed its presence. The influence of PEFAE operating parameters, namely, electric field strength (1, 3 and 5 kV/cm), pulse duration (0.1, 0.2 and 0.5 ms), number of pulses (10,000, 20,000 and 40,000) and work cycle (20, 50 and 80%) on the permeabilization index and energy expenditure were tested. Also, once the operating conditions for PEFAE were set, the temperature for conventional extraction (CE) and PEFAE were defined by comparing extraction kinetics. The cabuya meristem slices were exposed to PEFAE to obtain extracts that were quantified, purified and concentrated. The inulin was isolated by fractional precipitation with ethanol to be characterized. The highest permeabilization index and the lowest energy consumption were reached at 5 kV/cm, 0.5 ms, 10,000 pulses and 20%. The same extraction yield and approximately the same amount of inulin were obtained by PEFAE at 60 °C compared to CE at 80 °C. Despite, the lower amount of inulin obtained by PEFAE in comparison to CE, its quality was better because it is mainly constituted of inulin of high average polymerization degree with more than 38 fructose units. In addition, TGA analyses showed that inulin obtained by PEFAE has a lower thermal degradation rate than the obtained by CE and to the standard.

BackgroundPatients who develop postoperative delirium (POD) have several clinical complications, such as increased morbidity, increased hospital stays, higher hospital costs, cognitive and functional impairment, and higher mortality. POD is a clinical condition preventable by standard non-pharmacological measures An intensive Occupational Therapy (OT) intervention has been shown to be highly effective in preventing delirium in critically ill medical patients, but it is unknown the effect in surgical patients. Thus, we designed a prospective clinical study with the aim to determine whether patients undergoing intervention by the OT team have a lower incidence of POD compared to the group treated only with standard measures.MethodsA multicenter, single-blind, randomized clinical trial was conducted between October 2018 and April 2021, in Santiago of Chile, at a university hospital and at a public hospital. Patients older than 75 years undergoing elective major surgery were eligible for the trial inclusion. Patients with cognitive impairment, severe communication disorder and cultural language limitation, delirium at admission or before surgery, and enrolled in another study were excluded. The intervention consisted of OT therapy twice a day plus standard internationally recommended non-pharmacological prevention intervention during 5 days after surgery. Our primary outcome was development of delirium and postoperative subsyndromal delirium.ResultsIn total 160 patients were studied. In the interventional group, treated with an intensive prevention by OT, nine patients (12.9%) developed delirium after surgery and in the control group four patients (5.5%) [p = 0.125, RR 2.34 CI 95 (0.75–7.27)]. Whereas subsyndromal POD was present in 38 patients in the control group (52.1%) and in 34 (48.6%) in the intervention group [p = 0.4, RR 0.93 CI95 (0.67–1.29)]. A post hoc analysis determined that the patient’s comorbidity and cognitive status prior to hospitalization were the main risk factors to develop delirium after surgery.DiscussionPatients undergoing intervention by the OT team did not have a lower incidence of POD compared to the group treated only with standard non-pharmacological measures in adults older than 75 years who went for major surgery.Clinical trial registrationwww.ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier NCT03704090.

Metallic powders are widely utilized as feedstock materials in metal additive manufacturing (MAM). However, only a limited number of alloys can currently be processed using these technologies, with most of them being casting alloys. The objective of this study is to investigate novel aluminum alloys produced via a close-coupled gas atomizer (CCGA) by adding an increasing amount of copper (4, 8, and 20 wt%) to an AlSi10Mg alloy. The obtained powders were fully characterized to evaluate the effect of copper, a well-established strengthener for aluminum alloys, in order to correlate the obtained hardness to the powder phase composition and microstructure. In particular, a dendritic microstructure was observed in all alloys, and, as the copper content was increased, the size of the secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) decreased progressively. Consequently, the hardness measured on the powder cross-section linearly increased with the copper content, and the hardness value of 185 ± 13 HV of the AlCu20Si10Mg composition was found to be twice that of the AlSi10Mg alloy (88 ± 5 HV).

ABSTRACT Multiple vaccines against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) have been evaluated in clinical trials. However, trials addressing the immune response in the pediatric population are scarce. The inactivated vaccine CoronaVac has been shown to be safe and immunogenic in a phase 1/2 clinical trial in a pediatric cohort in China. Here, we report interim safety and immunogenicity results of a phase 3 clinical trial for CoronaVac in healthy children and adolescents in Chile. Participants 3 to 17 years old received two doses of CoronaVac in a 4-week interval until 31 December 2021. Local and systemic adverse reactions were registered for volunteers who received one or two doses of CoronaVac. Whole-blood samples were collected from a subgroup of 148 participants for humoral and cellular immunity analyses. The main adverse reaction reported after the first and second doses was pain at the injection site. Four weeks after the second dose, an increase in neutralizing antibody titer was observed in subjects relative to their baseline visit. Similar results were found for activation of specific CD4+ T cells. Neutralizing antibodies were identified against the Delta and Omicron variants. However, these titers were lower than those for the D614G strain. Importantly, comparable CD4+ T cell responses were detected against these variants of concern. Therefore, CoronaVac is safe and immunogenic in subjects 3 to 17 years old, inducing neutralizing antibody secretion and activating CD4+ T cells against SARS-CoV-2 and its variants. IMPORTANCE This work evaluated the immune response induced by two doses of CoronaVac separated by 4 weeks in healthy children and adolescents in Chile. To date, few studies have described the effects of CoronaVac in the pediatric population. Therefore, it is essential to generate knowledge regarding the protection of vaccines in this population. Along these lines, we reported the anti-S humoral response and cellular immune response to several SARS-CoV-2 proteins that have been published and recently studied. Here, we show that a vaccination schedule consisting of two doses separated by 4 weeks induces the secretion of neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. Furthermore, CoronaVac induces the activation of CD4+ T cells upon stimulation with peptides from the proteome of SARS-CoV-2. These results indicate that, even though the neutralizing antibody response induced by vaccination decreases against the Delta and Omicron variants, the cellular response against these variants is comparable to the response against the ancestral strain D614G, even being significantly higher against Omicron.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of vaccinating children against SARS-CoV-2 was rapidly established. This study describes the safety of CoronaVac® in children and adolescents between 3- and 17-years-old in a multicenter study in Chile with two vaccine doses in a 4-week interval. For all participants, immediate adverse events (AEs), serious AEs (SAEs), and AEs of special interest (AESIs) were registered throughout the study. In the safety subgroup, AEs were recorded 28 days after each dose. COVID-19 surveillance was performed throughout the study. A total of 1139 individuals received the first and 1102 the second dose of CoronaVac®; 835 were in the safety subgroup. The first dose showed the highest number of AEs: up to 22.2% of participants reported any local and 17.1% systemic AE. AEs were more frequent in adolescents after the first dose, were transient, and mainly mild. Pain at the inoculation site was the most frequent AE for all ages. Fever was the most frequent systemic AE for 3–5 years old and headache in 6–17 years old. No SAEs or AESIs related to vaccination occurred. Most of the COVID-19 cases were mild and managed as outpatients. CoronaVac® was safe and well tolerated in children and adolescents, with different safety patterns according to age.

We describe a case of Pediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2 (PIMS-TS) in an 8-year-old child. The patient developed multiorgan dysfunction, including mixed shock, cardiac dysfunction with myocarditis, pneumonia, acute kidney failure, and gastrointestinal involvement characterized by inflammation of the wall of the bowel and pancreatitis. After treatment with Tocilizumab and corticoid therapy, he presented clinical improvement and normalization of inflammatory markers. PIMS-TS is a new disease developed in a small percentage of patients, so a high degree of suspicion is necessary to establish the diagnosis. Supportive care is of paramount importance. The use of Tocilizumab to control the inflammatory response is likely to be beneficial, but the best immunotherapeutic agent has not yet been established. Randomized clinical studies should be run to determine the best treatment.

Objective: To describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of hospitalized children with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) in Santiago, Chile. Methods: This was an observational study of children with MIS-C (May 1 to June 24, 2020), in three pediatric hospitals in Santiago. Demographic characteristics and epidemiological data, medical history, laboratory tests, cardiology evaluations, treatment, and clinical outcomes were analyzed. Results: Twenty-seven patients were admitted (median age 6, range 0–14 years). Sixteen of the 27 (59%) required intensive care unit admission; there were no deaths. Seventy-four percent had no comorbidities, and the median number of days of symptoms before admission was 4 (range 2–9 days). Gastrointestinal symptoms were the most frequent, and inflammatory markers were increased at admission. A recent severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection was detected in 82% of cases. The severe group showed significantly lower hemoglobin and albumin levels, decreased platelet counts, and higher d-dimer during disease evolution. Echocardiography showed abnormalities (myocardial, pericardial, or coronary) in 12 patients (46%) during their hospital stay. Anti-inflammatory treatment (immunoglobulin and/or corticosteroids) was prescribed in 24 patients. MIS-C appeared in clusters weeks after the peak of SARS-CoV-2 cases, especially in the most vulnerable areas of Santiago. Conclusions: This study describes the first series (n = 27) of children with MIS-C in a Latin American country, showing favorable clinical outcomes. Education and alerts are required for clinical teams to establish an early diagnosis and prompt treatment.

La nefropatía diabética (ND) es una de las principales complicaciones de la diabetes y la principal causa de enfermedad renal terminal en el mundo. Actualmente la tasa de filtración glomerular estimada y la albuminuria son los principales marcadores de detección de la ND. Sin embargo, estos marcadores no indican con precisión el grado de disfunción y lesión renal. En los últimos años los microARN (miARN) se han propuesto como moléculas clave en múltiples procesos biológicos y metabólicos, debido a su papel en la regulación de genes que codifican a proteínas asociadas con la patogenia de distintas enfermedades, entre las que encontramos la ND. Diferentes estudios han demostrado que la sobrerregulación de algunos miARN en pacientes que viven con diabetes muestra efectos de protección renal, mientras que la subregulación puede favorecer el desarrollo de enfermedades renales, por lo que el estudio de estas moléculas representa una potencial fuente de nuevos biomarcadores no invasivos, dirigidos a la detección temprana y nuevas estrategias terapéuticas de enfermedades renales. En este trabajo nos planteamos explicar la biogénesis, función de los miARN y su potencial papel como biomarcadores empleados en la detección oportuna de la ND.

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is the most abundant internal modification described in eukaryotic mRNA and several viral RNA including human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV). Here, we evaluated the impact of m6A writers, erasers and readers on HRSV genomic RNA accumulation and inclusion bodies assembly during viral replication. We observed that the METTL3/METTL14 m6A writer complex plays a negative role in HRSV protein synthesis and viral titers, while m6A erasers FTO and ALKBH5 had the opposite effect. We also observed that m6A readers YTHDF1-3 bind to the viral genomic RNA inducing a decrease in its intracellular levels and thus, inhibiting viral replication. Finally, we observed that overexpression of YTHDFs proteins caused a decrease in the size of inclusion bodies (IBs), accompanied by an increase in their number. METTL3 knockdown cells showed an opposite effect indicating that the dynamics of IBs assembly and coalescence are strongly affected by m6A readers in a mechanism dependent on m6A writers. Taken together, our results demonstrated that the m6A modification negatively affects HRSV replication, possibly through a mechanism involving the assembly of inclusion bodies, the main factories of viral genomic RNA synthesis.

Background: Most children and youth develop mild or asymptomatic disease during severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. However, a very small number of patients suffer severe Coronavirus induced disease 2019 (COVID-19). The reasons underlying these different outcomes remain unknown. Methods: We analyzed three different cohorts: children with acute infection (n=550), convalescent children (n=138), and MIS-C (multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, n=42). IgG and IgM antibodies to the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, serum-neutralizing activity, plasma cytokine levels, and the frequency of circulating Follicular T helper cells (cTfh) and plasmablasts were analyzed by conventional methods. Findings: Fifty-eight percent of the children in the acute phase of infection had no detectable antibodies at the time of sampling while a seronegative status was found in 25% and 12% of convalescent and MIS-C children, respectively. When children in the acute phase of the infection were stratified according disease severity, we found that contrasting with the response of children with asymptomatic, mild and moderate disease, children with severe COVID-19 did not develop any detectable response. A defective antibody response was also observed in the convalescent cohort for children with severe disease at the time of admission. This poor antibody response was associated to both, a low frequency of cTfh and a high plasma concentration of inflammatory cytokines. Interpretation: A weak and delayed kinetic of antibody response to SARS-CoV-2 together with a systemic pro-inflammatory profile characterize pediatric severe COVID-19. Because comorbidities are highly prevalent in children with severe COVID-19, further studies are needed to clarify their contribution in the weak antibody response observed in severe disease. Abstract Background Knockdown resistance (kdr) is a well-characterized target-site insecticide resistance mechanism that is associated with DDT and pyrethroid resistance. Even though insecticide resistance to pyrethroids and DDT have been reported in Anopheles albimanus, Anopheles benarrochi sensu lato (s.l.), Anopheles darlingi, Anopheles nuneztovari s.l., and Anopheles pseudopunctipennis s.l. malaria vectors in Latin America, there is a knowledge gap on the role that kdr resistance mechanisms play in this resistance. The aim of this study was to establish the role that kdr mechanisms play in pyrethroid and DDT resistance in the main malaria vectors in Colombia, in addition to previously reported metabolic resistance mechanisms, such as mixed function oxidases (MFO) and nonspecific esterases (NSE) enzyme families. Methods Surviving (n = 62) and dead (n = 67) An. nuneztovari s.l., An. darlingi and An. albimanus mosquitoes exposed to diagnostic concentrations of DDT and pyrethroid insecticides were used to amplify and sequence a ~ 225 bp fragment of the voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSC) gene. This fragment spanning codons 1010, 1013 and 1014 at the S6 segment of domain II to identify point mutations, which have been associated with insecticide resistance in different species of Anopheles malaria vectors. Results No kdr mutations were detected in the coding sequence of this fragment in 129 samples, 62 surviving mosquitoes and 67 dead mosquitoes, of An. darlingi, An. nuneztovari s.l. and An. albimanus. Conclusion Mutations in the VGSC gene, most frequently reported in other species of the genus Anopheles resistant to pyrethroid and DDT, are not associated with the low-intensity resistance detected to these insecticides in some populations of the main malaria vectors in Colombia. These results suggest that metabolic resistance mechanisms previously reported in these populations might be responsible for the resistance observed.

Background: Perhaps reflecting that children with COVID-19 rarely exhibit severe respiratory symptoms and often remain asymptomatic, little attention has been paid to explore the immune response in pediatric COVID-19. Here, we analyzed the phenotype and function of circulating neutrophils from children with COVID-19. Methods: An observational study including 182 children with COVID-19, 21 children with multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C), and 40 healthy children was performed in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Neutrophil phenotype was analyzed by flow cytometry in blood samples. Cytokine production, plasma levels of IgG antibodies directed to the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 and citrullinated histone H3 were measured by ELISA. Cell-free DNA was quantified by fluorometry. Findings: Compared with healthy controls, neutrophils from children with COVID-19 showed a lower expression of CD11b, CD66b, and L-selectin but a higher expression of the activation markers HLA-DR, CD64 and PECAM-1 and the inhibitory receptors LAIR-1 and PD-L1. No differences in the production of cytokines and NETs were observed. Interestingly, the expression of CD64 in neutrophils and the serum concentration of IgG antibodies directed to the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 distinguished asymptomatic from mild and moderate COVID-19. Interpretation: Acute lung injury is a prominent feature of severe COVID-19 in adults. A low expression of adhesion molecules together with a high expression of inhibitory receptors in neutrophils from children with COVID-19 might prevent tissue infiltration by neutrophils preserving lung function. Conventional influenza vaccines aim at the induction of virus-neutralizing antibodies that provide with sterilizing immunity. However, influenza vaccination often confers protection from disease but not from infection. The impact of infection-permissive vaccination on the immune response elicited by subsequent influenza virus infection is not well-understood. Here, we investigated to what extent infection-permissive immunity, in contrast to virus-neutralizing immunity, provided by a trivalent inactivated virus vaccine (TIV) modulates disease and virus-induced host immune responses after sublethal vaccine-matching H1N1 infection in a mouse model. More than one TIV vaccination was needed to induce a serum HI titer and provide sterilizing immunity upon homologous virus infection. However, single TIV administration provided infection-permissive immunity, characterized by lower viral lung titers and faster recovery. Despite the presence of replicating virus, single TIV vaccination prevented induction of pro-inflammatory cyto- and chemokines, alveolar macrophage depletion as well as the establishment of lung-resident B and T cells after infection. To investigate virus infection-induced cross-protective heterosubtypic immune responses in vaccinated and unvaccinated animals, mice were re-infected with a lethal dose of H3N2 virus 4 weeks after H1N1 infection. Single TIV vaccination did not prevent H1N1 virus infection-induced heterosubtypic cross-protection, but shifted the mechanism of cross-protection from the cellular to the humoral branch of the immune system. These results suggest that suboptimal vaccination with conventional influenza vaccines may still positively modulate disease outcome after influenza virus infection, while promoting humoral heterosubtypic immunity after virus infection.

RESUMEN: Dentro del proceso de investigación clínica, el planteamiento de una correcta pregunta de investigación junto con una hipótesis y objetivos concordantes son la hoja de ruta que orienta la estrategia y metodología científica. Por este motivo, son etapas fundamentales al plantear un estudio. El siguiente artículo revisa las definiciones y conceptos básicos de pregunta de investigación, hipótesis y objetivos, ejemplificando cada uno de ellos y entregando recomendaciones para su adecuada formulación. ABSTRACT: During the clinical research process, framing a correct research question along with concordant hypothesis and goals is the roadmap to achieve a successful strategy and scientific methodology. For this reason, they are fundamental steps when planning a clinical study. This article reviews definitions and basic concepts about research question, hypothesis and goals, with examples and recommendations for the clinical researchers to achieve a proper approach. The production and use of eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors allows valuable compounds contained in plant waste to be identified and repurposed while reducing the use of polluting synthetic substances. Pectin extracted from Tahiti limes (Citrus latifolia) and King mandarin (Citrus nobilis L.) in addition to natural gums—xanthan gum and latex from the “lechero” plant (Euphorbia laurifolia)—were used to create an eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor. The optimal extraction conditions for pectin were determined from different combinations of pH, temperature, and time in a 23 factorial design and evaluated according to the obtained pectin yield. The highest pectin extraction yields (38.10% and 41.20% from King mandarin and lime, respectively) were reached at pH = 1, 85 °C, and 2 h. Extraction of pectic compounds was confirmed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetry analyses. Subsequently, a simplex-centroid mixture design was applied to determine the formulation of extracted pectin and natural gums that achieved the highest corrosion inhibitor effect (linear polarization and weight loss methods in NACE 1D-196 saline media using API-5LX52 carbon steel). Impedance spectroscopy analysis showed that the addition of xanthan gum to pectin (formulation 50% pectin–50% xanthan gum) improved the corrosion inhibitor effect from 29.20 to 78.21% at 400 ppm due to higher adsorption of inhibitory molecules on the metal surface.

Dengue is the most prevalent arthropod-borne viral disease worldwide and is caused by the four dengue virus serotypes (DENV-1-4). Sequential heterologous DENV infections can be associated with severe disease manifestations. Here, we present an immunocompetent mouse model of secondary DENV infection using non mouse-adapted DENV strains to investigate the pathogenesis of severe dengue disease. C57BL/6 mice infected sequentially with DENV-1 (strain Puerto Rico/94) and DENV-2 (strain Tonga/74) developed low platelet counts, internal hemorrhages, and increase of liver enzymes. Cross-reactive CD8+ T lymphocytes were found to be necessary and sufficient for signs of severe disease by adoptively transferring of DENV-1-immune CD8+T lymphocytes before DENV-2 challenge. Disease signs were associated with production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and elevated cytotoxicity displayed by heterotypic anti-DENV-1 CD8+ T lymphocytes. These findings highlight the critical role of heterotypic anti-DENV CD8+ T lymphocytes in manifestations of severe dengue disease.

The paper analyses the relationship between Alfred Métraux and the Toba and Pilagá peoples of Western Formosa (Argentina) during 1933. The peculiar sociopolitical circumstances that encompassed Métraux’s fieldwork are detailed: the logistical problems due to the feeble economic situation of University of Tucumán, the Chaco War between Bolivia and Paraguay (1932-1935), the inescapable relationship with the Anglican settlements of the South American Missionary Society and the tense situation on the national frontier between Argentina and Paraguay. By combining personal letters, published texts and oral and written sources, the paper aims to reconstruct the general context of the first ethnographic experiences of Métraux in the Gran Chaco.

Mesenchymal hamartoma is the second most frequent benign liver tumor in young children and usually occurs in the first two years of life. Currently, the gold standard for treatment is a complete surgical resection. We report a 17-month old patient with a giant mesenchymal hamartoma who, due to the impossibility of resection and the risk of malignant transformation, received liver transplantation from a living donor with a satisfactory outcome in the first year post-transplant. In this report, we show that liver transplantation is a viable therapeutic alternative for this pathology, in patients who have no possibility of receiving another type of treatment due to their clinical characteristics.

Inulin is a polysaccharide of fructose widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industry due to its physicochemical properties and technological applications. Inulin from jicama (Smallanthus sonchifolius) and cabuya (Agave americana) was obtained. The steps for inulin obtention were: raw material preparation, extraction and purification. The extraction conditions were determined using a random design with three levels of stirring speed (0, 130 and 300 rpm), and a 32 factorial experimental design with three levels of temperature (40, 60 and 80 °C) and solid:liquid ratio (1:2, 1:3 and 1:5 S:L). The results showed that the best extractions conditions for jicama were 130 rpm, 75 °C, 1:5 S:L and 25 min; while for cabuya were 80 °C, 300 rpm, 1:5 S-L and 100 min. The weight average molecular weight of inulin from jicama and cabuya were 5799.9 and 4659.75 g/mol, respectively. The identity of the obtained inulin from jicama and cabuya were confirmed by infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy. In addition, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry analyses were performed to characterize both inulins.

Pheochromocytomas are rare catecholamine producing neuroendocrine tumors. The incidence of these tumors is estimated to affect 0.8 per 100,000 person-years and is most common in the fourth to fifth decade of life with equal prevalence in men and women. We describe a case of an 84-year-old male who presented with cycling episodes of severe hypertension and hypotension after an elective cardiac catheterization. Workup of the labile blood pressure revealed a large suprarenal mass and free serum metanephrines (MN) 104 nmol/L (reference range 0.0-0.49 nmol/L) and normetanephrines (NMN) of 24 nmol/L (reference range 0.0-0.89 nmol/L), confirming the diagnosis of a pheochromocytoma. The patient’s labile blood pressure was a challenge to manage medically and improved only after aggressive hydration and an alpha-adrenergic antagonist. Of note, this is the second eldest patient known to be published to date with a pheochromocytoma.

The paper analyses the construction of discourses, views and representations about the indigenous societies of Bolivian Amazonia during the rubber boom. From the final decades of the 19th century to the beginnings of the 20th, the vernacular societies held ambivalent relations with the colonization forces (commerce, alliance, armed clashes, etc.). Nevertheless, the images and representations about them were neither stable nor homogeneous, because the Araona, Cavineño, Pacaguara, Caripuna and Chacobo were stereotyped in different ways by their observers.

Las infecciones virales continúan siendo frecuentes en la práctica clínica. Los avances en el manejo de pacientes críticos, de inmunosuprimidos y la posibilidad de ofrecer un tratamiento antiviral oportuno han exigido que el diagnóstico virológico sea hoy un servicio central dentro de los laboratorios clínicos. Un correcto y completo diagnóstico virológico permite además monitorizar pacientes con infecciones crónicas, detectar seroconversión o susceptibilidad de la población vacunada y caracterizar eventuales epidemias causadas por estos agentes. En el siguiente artículo se revisan los conceptos en los que se basan las técnicas utilizadas para el diagnóstico virológico y se entrega un resumen de los exámenes de laboratorio a solicitar ante las infecciones más frecuentes.

Introducción. El uso continuo de insecticidas para el control de la transmisión del dengue puede generar una reducción en los niveles de sensibilidad de las poblaciones de los mosquitos vectores. La vigilancia oportuna es necesaria para detectar cualquier problema potencial de resistencia. Objetivo. Determinar el estado de la sensibilidad a insecticidas de uso en salud pública en poblaciones de Aedes aegypti del departamento de Caldas, Colombia, en el 2007 y el 2011. Materiales y métodos. Se realizaron pruebas de sensibilidad a los organofosforados temefós, malatión, fenitrotión y metil-pirimifós y al piretroide deltametrina, siguiendo las metodologías estandarizadas de la Organización Mundial de la Salud y de los Centers for Disease Control and Prevention de los Estados Unidos. Resultados. En el 2007 se encontró resistencia al temefós en dos barrios del municipio de La Dorada, con grados de resistencia de 11,5 y 13,3. Por ello, la Dirección Territorial de Salud de Caldas suspendió el uso de este larvicida en dichos barrios. Cuatro años después, en el 2011, se observó una reducción en los grados de resistencia al temefós, así como resistencia al metil-pirimifós. Todas las poblaciones evaluadas fueron sensibles a los insecticidas deltametrina, malatión y fenitrotión en los dos períodos. Conclusión. La cuantificación de los grados de resistencia en dos períodos permitió evidenciar la reducción de la resistencia al temefós después de suspender su uso. Se recomienda mantener la vigilancia de los niveles de sensibilidad de los insecticidas usados en los programas de control de dengue.

The article discusses the construction of social representations on the Panoan indigenous peoples of Bolivian Amazonia during the rubber boom (late 19th Century and early 20th Century). It is argued that this imagery was neither homogenous nor stable, and that the Pacaguara, Chacobo and Caripuna were portrayed in multiple ways by their observers.

Copernicia y Washingtonia son dos de los géneros de Trachycarpeae para los cuales no ha sido propuesta una clasificación subtribal debido a la carencia de resolución en los estudios filogenéticos. La morfología y anatomía floral dentro de Coryphoideae han sido útiles para la delimitación de taxones y apoyo de relaciones. En este trabajo se presenta una descripción de la estructura morfo-anatómica de las flores de C. tectorum y W. filifera, con la finalidad de explorar caracteres reproductivos que puedan aclarar su ubicación dentro de la subfamilia y contribuir con estudios de biología floral. Se fijaron flores de especimenes cultivados de ambos taxones y frutos en desarrollo de C. tectorum, se realizaron disecciones para las descripciones morfológicas y cortes anatómicos seriados para la obtención de láminas permanentes utilizando técnicas convencionales con parafina. Todos los procedimientos fueron llevados a cabo en el Laboratorio de Morfo-Anatomía, Facultad de Agronomía de la Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV). Ambas especies tienen flores hermafroditas. Las flores de C. tectorum tienen perianto engrosado y pubescente. Las flores de W. filifera presentan un cáliz irregularmente dentado y corola corto-acuminada. Se reportan células con drusas en el tubo estaminal de C. tectorum. Uno solo de los carpelos de C. tectorum se desarrolla en fruto y se encontró una capa de células con rafidios que podrían formar el endocarpo crustáceo en los frutos maduros. W. filifera presenta pocas capas de células de paredes engrosadas y tejido esclerenquimático en el mesofilo del perianto, gineceo con carpelos fusionados en el ápice del ovario (en su porción ventral), libres en la base y en el ápice del estilo, donde presenta suturas ventrales abiertas. Los pétalos de C. tectorum poseen una hipodermis ventral de células con paredes muy engrosadas, gineceo con carpelos fusionados en el ápice del ovario, libres y adpresos en su base, región estilar-estigmática fusionada y canal de transmisión estilar ausente distalmente. La presencia de canales estilares separados en C. tectorum, unidos distalmente en W. filifera confirman la relación cercana de estas especies con la subtribu Livistoninae. Igualmente, se encontraron algunas similitudes entre C. tectorum y Pritchardia (p.e. base carnosa del cáliz y epidermis ventral con células de paredes engrosadas en los pétalos), apoyando ciertas afinidades entre ambos géneros.

Bacteria in the diverse Pseudomonas fluorescens group include rhizosphere inhabitants known for their antifungal metabolite production and biological control of plant disease, such as Pseudomonas protegens Pf-5, and mushroom pathogens, such as Pseudomonas tolaasii. Here, we report that strain Pf-5 causes brown, sunken lesions on peeled caps of the button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) that resemble brown blotch symptoms caused by P. tolaasii. Strain Pf-5 produces six known antifungal metabolites under the control of the GacS/GacA signal transduction system. A gacA mutant produces none of these metabolites and did not cause lesions on mushroom caps. Mutants deficient in the biosynthesis of the antifungal metabolites 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol and pyoluteorin caused less-severe symptoms than wild-type Pf-5 on peeled mushroom caps, whereas mutants deficient in the production of lipopeptide orfamide A caused similar symptoms to wild-type Pf-5. Purified pyoluteorin and 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol mimicked the symptoms caused by Pf-5. Both compounds were isolated from mushroom tissue inoculated with Pf-5, providing direct evidence for their in situ production by the bacterium. Although the lipopeptide tolaasin is responsible for brown blotch of mushroom caused by P. tolaasii, P. protegens Pf-5 caused brown blotch–like symptoms on peeled mushroom caps through a lipopeptide-independent mechanism involving the production of 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol and pyoluteorin.

El artículo describe la continuidad paradójica entre la crítica de los misioneros católicos a la captación de mano de obra indígena durante el llamado «boom cauchero» en la Amazonía boliviana, a fi nes del siglo XIX y comienzos del XX, y la relación más compleja que establecieron posteriormente los misioneros protestantes del Instituto Lingüístico de Verano con los chacobos (pano), desde 1955 hasta 1980, incentivando activamente a los indígenas a trabajar en la industria cauchera e integrarse en la economía regional.

Introducción. El departamento del Putumayo es una región endémica para malaria, o paludismo, causada principalmente por Plasmodium vivax. Los vectores en esta región incluyen Anopheles darlingi, el cual se ha encontrado solamente en el municipio de Puerto Leguízamo, y recientemente se incriminaron como vectores en Puerto Asís a las especies An. rangeli y An. oswaldoi. Objetivo. El propósito del trabajo fue determinar el papel de An. benarrochi B en la transmisión de malaria en este departamento, ya que se reporta como la especie más abundante que pica a los humanos. Materiales y métodos. Se recolectaron larvas y adultos de Anopheles spp. entre el 2006 y el 2008 en los municipios Puerto Leguízamo y Puerto Asís, y se obtuvieron secuencias del gen ITS-2 y del gen mitocondrial COI para confirmar las determinaciones taxonómicas por morfología. Se practicó la prueba ELISA para establecer la infección por P. vivax y P. falciparum. Resultados. Se identificaron 6.238 individuos correspondientes a 11 especies: An. albitarsis s.l. (1,83 %), An. benarrochi B (72,35 %), An. braziliensis (0,05 %), An. costai (0,06 %), An. darlingi (19,37 %), An. mattogrossensis (0,08 %), An. neomaculipalpus (0,13 %), An. oswaldoi s.l. (0,64 %), An. punctimacula (0,03 %), An. rangeli (5,12 %) y An. triannulatus s.l. (0,34 %). Se evaluaron 5.038 adultos por ELISA y 5 se encontraron positivos para P. vivax 210 y VK 247, todos pertenecientes a la especie An. benarrochi B. Conclusión. Los resultados sugieren que An. benarrochi B juega un papel en la transmisión de P. vivax en el departamento de Putumayo, dada su alta atracción por los humanos y su infección natural con Plasmodium spp. doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.7705/biomedica.v33i1.619

In response to the first human outbreak (January - May 2005) of Saint Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus in Córdoba province, Argentina, we developed an environmental SLE virus risk map for the capital, i.e. Córdoba city. The aim was to provide a map capable of detecting macro-environmental factors associated with the spatial distribution of SLE cases, based on remotely sensed data and a geographical information system. Vegetation, soil brightness, humidity status, distances to water-bodies and areas covered by vegetation were assessed based on pre-outbreak images provided by the Landsat 5TM satellite. A strong inverse relationship between the number of humans infected by SLEV and distance to high-vigor vegetation was noted. A statistical non-hierarchic decision tree model was constructed, based on environmental variables representing the areas surrounding patient residences. From this point of view, 18% of the city could be classified as being at high risk for SLEV infection, while 34% carried a low risk, or none at all. Taking the whole 2005 epidemic into account, 80% of the cases came from areas classified by the model as medium-high or high risk. Almost 46% of the cases were registered in high-risk areas, while there were no cases (0%) in areas affirmed as risk free.

Se analizan diversas informaciones sobre los llamados “panos meridionales” desde fines del siglo XVIII a mediados del siglo XX. Se discute, especialmente, el juego variable de relaciones entre los etnónimos que aparecen en las fuentes(“pacaguaras”, “chacobos”, “caripunas”), su extensión en el espacio, y la formación de grupos sociales. Para ello se propone que estos etnónimos designan categorías genéricas que reflejan diversas experiencias de contacto entre los panos meridionales y otros grupos indígenas, los misioneros jesuitas, franciscanos y seculares, los barones caucheros, los militares y exploradores coloniales y luego republicanos.

Para determinar el efecto del potencial de daño de Anthonomus grandis Boheman, se realizó el presente trabajo bajo condiciones de campo (28°C., HR 80% y PP media anual de 1200 mm). Se evaluó el potencial de daño del picudo del algodonero introduciendo parejas vírgenes del insecto en jaulas de 3 m x 2 m x 2 m, elaboradas en madera y tela de malín. Diariamente se revisaron cada una de las plantas enjauladas y se removieron los botones con daño de oviposición. Se encontró que una hembra oviposita 178 huevos en un período de 27,33 días y puede ocasionar la pérdida de igual número de botones.
