9. Late Hebrew Immersion at Mt. Scopus College, Melbourne: Towards Complete Hebrew Fluency for Jewish Day School Students.

Abstract

This paper describes and evaluates a Hebrew immersion program for Jewish day school students at Mt. Scopus College in Melbourne, Australia. Specific sections address the following: (1) the first year; (2) the second year; (3) designing the evaluation of the program; (4) results of the evaluation (including academic outcomes, student and parent attitudes); (5) communicating the information in the evaluations; (6) significance of the evaluation findings; and (7) implications for practitioners. It is suggested that although it is too early to predict what the ultimate outcomes of the evaluation will be, the preliminary findings are promising, and the opportunities for further positive effects are considerable. Abstract

Abstract: Genetic association studies in forest trees would greatly benefit from information on the response of trees to environmental stressors over time, which can be provided by dendroecological analysis. Here, we jointly analysed dendroecological and genetic data of surviving silver fir trees to explore the genetic basis of their response to the iconic stress episode of the 1970s and 1980s that led to large‐scale forest dieback in Central Europe and has been attributed to air pollution. Specifically, we derived dendrophenotypic measures from 190 trees in the Bavarian Forest that characterize the resistance, resilience and recovery during this growth depression, and in the drought year in 1976. By focusing on relative growth changes of trees and by standardizing the dendrophenotypes within stands, we accounted for variation introduced by micro‐ and macroscale environmental differences. We associated the dendrophenotypes with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in candidate genes using general linear models (GLMs) and the machine learning algorithm random forest with subsequent feature selection. Most trees at our study sites experienced a severe growth decline from 1974 until the mid‐1980s with minimum values during the drought year. Fifteen genes were associated with the dendrophenotypes, including genes linked to photosynthesis and drought stress. With our study, we show that dendrophenotypes can be a powerful resource for genetic association studies that permit to account for micro‐ and macroenvironmental variation when data are derived from natural populations. We call for a wider collaboration of dendroecologists and forest geneticists to integrate individual tree‐level dendrophenotypes in genetic association studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

44. Sex- and estrous cycle-related differences in the effects of acute antipsychotic drug administration on neurotensin-containing neurons in the rat brain.

Abstract

The effects of a single injection of haloperidol (2.0 mg/kg), a typical antipsychotic drug, on neurotensin (NT) concentrations and NT/neuromedin N (NT/NN) mRNA expression in adult female and male rats were examined. There were significant estrous cycle stage-related differences in both NT concentrations and NT/NN mRNA expression in female control rats. Although acute administration of haloperidol increased NT concentrations and NT/NN mRNA expression in the caudate/putamen and nucleus accumbens of both male and female rats, haloperidol did not increase NT/NN mRNA expression during diestrus 2 or NT concentrations during proestrus in the nucleus accumbens of female rats. These results indicate the presence of both sex- and estrous cycle-related differences in the regulation of NT-containing neurons and in the effects of antipsychotic drug administration on the NT system of the rat brain.

We present the operation characteristics of 850-nm wavelength GaAs-based monolithically integrated transceiver chips designed for low-cost short-distance bidirectional optical data transmission over a butt-coupled 200-mum core diameter polymer-clad silica fiber. The chips containing a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser and a large-area metal-semiconductor-metal photodiode can well handle data rates of 2.5Gb/s in back-to-back mode and 0.5 Gb/s for 10-m fiber length [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
