In this article, we introduce a method to optimize 5G massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) connectivity for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on aerial highways through strategic cell association. UAVs operating in 3D space encounter distinct channel conditions compared to traditional ground user equipment (gUE); under the typical line of sight (LoS) condition, UAVs perceive strong reference signal received power (RSRP) from multiple cells within the network, resulting in a large set of suitable serving cell candidates and in low signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) due to high interference levels. Additionally, a downside of aerial highways is to pack possibly many UAVs along a small portion of space which, when taking into account typical LoS propagation conditions, results in high channel correlation and severely limits spatial multiplexing capabilities. In this paper, we propose a solution to both problems based on the suitable selection of serving cells based on a new metric which differs from the classical terrestrial approaches based on maximum RSRP. We then introduce an algorithm for optimal planning of synchronization signal block (SSB) beams for this set of cells, ensuring maximum coverage and effective management of UAVs cell associations. Simulation results demonstrate that our approach significantly improves the rates of UAVs on aerial highways, up to four times in achievable data rates, without impacting ground user performance.

Optimizing the design, performance, and resource efficiency of wireless networks (WNs) necessitates the ability to discern Line of Sight (LoS) and Non-Line of Sight (NLoS) scenarios across diverse applications and environments. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) exhibit significant potential in this regard due to their rapid mobility, aerial capabilities, and payload characteristics. Particularly, UAVs can serve as vital non-terrestrial base stations (NTBS) in the event of terrestrial base station (TBS) failures or downtime. In this paper, we propose CNN autoencoder resizer (CAR) as a framework that improves the accuracy of LoS/NLoS detection without demanding extra power consumption. Our proposed method increases the mean accuracy of detecting LoS/NLoS signals from 66% to 86%, while maintaining consistent power consumption levels. In addition, the resolution provided by CAR shows that it can be employed as a preprocessing tool in other methods to enhance the quality of signals.

Due to an ever-expansive network deployment, numerous questions are being raised regarding the energy consumption of the mobile network. Recently, Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs) have proven to be a useful, and complementary solution to Terrestrial Networks (TN) to provide ubiquitous coverage. In this paper, we consider an integrated TN-NTN, and study how to maximize its resource usage in a dynamic traffic scenario. We introduce BLASTER, a framework designed to control User Equipment (UE) association, Base Station (BS) transmit power and activation, and bandwidth allocation between the terrestrial and non-terrestrial tiers. Our proposal is able to adapt to fluctuating daily traffic, focusing on reducing power consumption throughout the network during low traffic and distributing the load otherwise. Simulation results show an average daily decrease of total power consumption by 45% compared to a network model following 3GPP recommendation, as well as an average throughput increase of roughly 250%. Millimeter-wave (mmWave) networks, integral to 5G communication, offer a vast spectrum that addresses the issue of spectrum scarcity and enhances peak rate and capacity. However, their dense deployment, necessary to counteract propagation losses, leads to high power consumption. An effective strategy to reduce this energy consumption in mobile networks is the sleep mode optimization (SMO) of base stations (BSs). In this paper, we propose a novel SMO approach for mmWave BSs in a 3D urban environment. This approach, which incorporates a neural network (NN) based contextual multi-armed bandit (C-MAB) with an epsilon decay algorithm, accommodates the dynamic and diverse traffic of user equipment (UE) by clustering the UEs in their respective tracking areas (TAs). Our strategy includes beamforming, which helps reduce energy consumption from the UE side, while SMO minimizes energy use from the BS perspective. We extended our investigation to include Random, Epsilon Greedy, Upper Confidence Bound (UCB), and Load Based sleep mode (SM) strategies. We compared the performance of our proposed C-MAB based SM algorithm with those of All On and other alternative approaches. Simulation results show that our proposed method outperforms all other SM strategies in terms of the $10^{th}$ percentile of user rate and average throughput while demonstrating comparable average throughput to the All On approach. Importantly, it outperforms all approaches in terms of energy efficiency (EE).

The energy consumption of mobile networks poses a critical challenge. Mitigating this concern necessitates the deployment and optimization of network energy-saving solutions, such as carrier shutdown, to dynamically manage network resources. Traditional optimization approaches encounter complexity due to factors like the large number of cells, stochastic traffic, channel variations, and intricate trade-offs. This paper introduces the simulated reality of communication networks (SRCON) framework, a novel, data-driven modeling paradigm that harnesses live network data and employs a blend of machine learning (ML)- and expert-based models. These mix of models accurately characterizes the functioning of network components, and predicts network energy efficiency and user equipment (UE) quality of service for any energy carrier shutdown configuration in a specific network. Distinguishing itself from existing methods, SRCON eliminates the reliance on expensive expert knowledge, drive testing, or incomplete maps for predicting network performance. This paper details the pipeline employed by SRCON to decompose the large network energy efficiency modeling problem into ML and expert-based submodels. It demonstrates how, by embracing stochasticity, and carefully crafting the relationship between such submodels, the overall computational complexity can be reduced and prediction accuracy enhanced. Results derived from real network data underscore the paradigm shift introduced by SRCON, showcasing significant gains over a state-of-the art method used by a operator for network energy efficiency modeling. Robust machine learning (ML) models can be developed by leveraging large volumes of data and distributing the computational tasks across numerous devices or servers. Federated learning (FL) is a technique in the realm of ML that facilitates this goal by utilizing cloud infrastructure to enable collaborative model training among a network of decentralized devices. Beyond distributing the computational load, FL targets the resolution of privacy issues and the reduction of communication costs simultaneously. To protect user privacy, FL requires users to send model updates rather than transmitting large quantities of raw and potentially confidential data. Specifically, individuals train ML models locally using their own data and then upload the results in the form of weights and gradients to the cloud for aggregation into the global model. This strategy is also advantageous in environments with limited bandwidth or high communication costs, as it prevents the transmission of large data volumes. With the increasing volume of data and rising privacy concerns, alongside the emergence of large-scale ML models like Large Language Models (LLMs), FL presents itself as a timely and relevant solution. It is therefore essential to review current FL algorithms to guide future research that meets the rapidly evolving ML demands. This survey provides a comprehensive analysis and comparison of the most recent FL algorithms, evaluating them on various fronts including mathematical frameworks, privacy protection, resource allocation, and applications. Beyond summarizing existing FL methods, this survey identifies potential gaps, open areas, and future challenges based on the performance reports and algorithms used in recent studies. This survey enables researchers to readily identify existing limitations in the FL field for further exploration.

In past years, non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) have emerged as a viable solution for providing ubiquitous connectivity for future wireless networks due to their ability to reach large geographical areas. However, the efficient integration and operation of an NTN with a classic terrestrial network (TN) is challenging due the large amount of parameters to tune. In this paper, we consider the downlink scenario of an integrated TN-NTN transmitting over the S band, comprised of low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites overlapping a large-scale ground cellular network. We propose a new resource management framework to optimize the user equipment (UE) performance by properly controlling the spectrum allocation, the UE association and the transmit power of ground base stations (BSs) and satellites. Our study reveals that, in rural scenarios, NTNs, combined with the proposed radio resource management framework, reduce the number of UEs that are out of coverage, highlighting the important role of NTNs in providing ubiquitous connectivity, and greatly improve the overall capacity of the network. As traditional cellular base stations (BSs) are optimized for 2D ground service, providing 3D connectivity to uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) requires re-engineering of the existing infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a new methodology for designing cellular networks that cater for both ground users and UAV corridors based on Bayesian optimization. We present a case study in which we maximize the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) for both populations of users by optimizing the electrical antenna tilts and the transmit power employed at each BS. Our proposed optimized network significantly boosts the UAV performance, with a 23.4dB gain in mean SINR compared to an all-downtilt, full-power baseline. At the same time, this optimal tradeoff nearly preserves the performance on the ground, even attaining a gain of 1.3dB in mean SINR with respect to said baseline. In this article, we advocate for the design of ad hoc artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) models to facilitate their usage in future smart infrastructures based on communication networks. To motivate this, we first review key operations identified by the 3GPP for transferring AI/ML models through 5G networks and the main existing techniques to reduce their communication overheads. We also present a novel communication-aware ML framework, which we refer to as Accordion, that enables an efficient AI/ML model transfer thanks to an overhauled model training and communication protocol. We demonstrate the communication-related benefits of Accordion, analyse key performance trade-offs, and discuss potential research directions within this realm.

The inclusion of the sensing functionality in the coming generations of cellular networks necessitates a rethink of dense cell deployments. In this paper, we analyze and optimize dense cell topologies for dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) cellular networks. With the aid of tools from stochastic geometry, we derive new analytical expressions of the potential area spectral efficiencies in (bit/sec/m2) of radar and communication systems. Based on the new formulations of the potential area spectral efficiencies, the energy efficiency (bit/Joule) of DFRC systems is provided in a closed-form formula. Then, an optimization problem to obtain the optimal base station (BS) density that maximizes the network-level energy efficiency is formulated and investigated. In this regard, the mathematical expression of the energy efficiency is shown to be a uni-modal and pseudo-concave function in the density of the BSs. Therefore, the optimal density of the BSs that maximizes the energy efficiency can be obtained. Our analytical and numerical results demonstrate that the inclusion of the sensing functionality clearly differentiates the optimal BS topologies for the DFRC systems against classical communication-only systems., Comment: 30 pages

The fifth generation of the Radio Access Network (RAN) has brought new services, technologies, and paradigms with the corresponding societal benefits. However, the energy consumption of 5G networks is today a concern. In recent years, the design of new methods for decreasing the RAN power consumption has attracted interest from both the research community and standardization bodies, and many energy savings solutions have been proposed. However, there is still a need to understand the power consumption behavior of state-ofthe-art base station architectures, such as multi-carrier active antenna units (AAUs), as well as the impact of different network parameters. In this paper, we present a power consumption model for 5G AAUs based on artificial neural networks. We demonstrate that this model achieves good estimation performance, and it is able to capture the benefits of energy saving when dealing with the complexity of multi-carrier base stations architectures. Importantly, multiple experiments are carried out to show the advantage of designing a general model able to capture the power consumption behaviors of different types of AAUs. Finally, we provide an analysis of the model scalability and the training data requirements.

The energy consumption of the fifth generation(5G) of mobile networks is one of the major concerns of the telecom industry. However, there is not currently an accurate and tractable approach to evaluate 5G base stations (BSs) power consumption. In this article, we propose a novel model for a realistic characterisation of the power consumption of 5G multi-carrier BSs, which builds on a large data collection campaign. At first, we define a machine learning architecture that allows modelling multiple 5G BS products. Then, we exploit the knowledge gathered by this framework to derive a realistic and analytically tractable power consumption model, which can help driving both theoretical analyses as well as feature standardisation, development and optimisation frameworks. Notably, we demonstrate that such model has high precision, and it is able of capturing the benefits of energy saving mechanisms. With growing interest in integrating terrestrial networks (TNs) and non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) to connect the unconnected, a key question is whether this new paradigm could also be opportunistically exploited to augment service in urban areas. We assess this possibility in the context of an integrated TN-NTN, comprising a ground cellular deployment paired with a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation, providing sub-6 GHz connectivity to an urban area populated by ground users (GUEs) and uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs). Our study reveals that offloading UAV traffic to the NTN segment drastically reduces the downlink outage of UAVs from 70% to nearly zero, also boosting their uplink signal quality as long as the LEO satellite constellation is sufficiently dense to guarantee a minimum elevation angle. Offloading UAVs to the NTN also benefits coexisting GUEs, preventing uplink outages of around 12% that GUEs would otherwise incur. Despite the limited bandwidth available below 6 GHz, NTN-offloaded UAVs meet command and control rate requirements even across an area the size of Barcelona with as many as one active UAV per cell. Smaller UAV populations yield proportionally higher rates, potentially enabling aerial broadband applications.

Integrating terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks has the potential of connecting the unconnected and enhancing the user experience for the already-connected, with technological and societal implications of the greatest long-term significance. A convergence of ground, air, and space wireless communications also represents a formidable endeavor for the mobile and satellite communications industries alike, as it entails defining and intelligently orchestrating a new 3D wireless network architecture. In this article, we present the key opportunities and challenges arising from this (r)evolution by presenting some of its disruptive use-cases and key building blocks, reviewing the relevant standardization activities, and pointing to open research problems. By considering two multi-operator paradigms, we also showcase how terrestrial networks could be efficiently re-engineered to cater for aerial services, or opportunistically complemented by non-terrestrial infrastructure to augment their current capabilities.

Cellular networks have changed the world we are living in, and the fifth generation (5G) of radio technology is expected to further revolutionise our everyday lives, by enabling a high degree of automation, through its larger capacity, massive connectivity, and ultra-reliable low-latency communications. In addition, the third generation partnership project (3GPP) new radio (NR) specification also provides tools to significantly decrease the energy consumption and the green house emissions of next generations networks, thus contributing towards information and communication technology (ICT) sustainability targets. In this survey paper, we thoroughly review the state-of-the-art on current energy efficiency research. We first categorise and carefully analyse the different power consumption models and energy efficiency metrics, which have helped to make progress on the understanding of green networks. Then, as a main contribution, we survey in detail -- from a theoretical and a practical viewpoint -- the main energy efficiency enabling technologies that 3GPP NR provides, together with their main benefits and challenges. Special attention is paid to four key enabling technologies, i.e., massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), lean carrier design, and advanced idle modes, together with the role of artificial intelligence capabilities. We dive into their implementation and operational details, and thoroughly discuss their optimal operation points and theoretical-trade-offs from an energy consumption perspective. This will help the reader to grasp the fundamentals of -- and the status on -- green networking. Finally, the areas of research where more effort is needed to make future networks greener are also discussed.

Motivated by the promising benefits of dynamic Time Division Duplex (TDD), in this paper, we use a unified framework to investigate both the technical issues of applying dynamic TDD in homogeneous small cell networks (HomSCNs), and the feasibility of introducing dynamic TDD into heterogeneous networks (HetNets). First, HomSCNs are analyzed, and a small cell BS scheduler that dynamically and independently schedules DL and UL subframes is presented, such that load balancing between the DL and the UL traffic can be achieved. Moreover, the effectiveness of various inter-link interference mitigation (ILIM) schemes as well as their combinations, is systematically investigated and compared. Besides, the interesting possibility of partial interference cancellation (IC) is also explored. Second,based on the proposed schemes, the joint operation of dynamic TDD together with cell range expansion (CRE) and almost blank subframe (ABS) in HetNets is studied. In this regard, scheduling polices in small cells and an algorithm to derive the appropriate macrocell traffic off-load and ABS duty cycle under dynamic TDD operation are proposed. Indoor areas, such as offices and shopping malls, are a natural environment for initial millimeter-wave (mmWave) deployments. While we already have the technology that enables us to realize indoor mmWave deployments, there are many remaining challenges associated with system-level design and planning for such. The objective of this article is to bring together multiple strands of research to provide a comprehensive and integrated framework for the design and performance evaluation of indoor mmWave systems. The paper introduces the framework with a status update on mmWave technology, including ongoing fifth generation (5G) wireless standardization efforts, and then moves on to experimentally-validated channel models that inform performance evaluation and deployment planning. In this paper, we perform a survey on new Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-Advanced) enhancements,covering the technologies recently adopted by the 3GPP in LTE Release 11 and those being discussed in LTE Release 12. In more details, we introduce the latest enhancements on carrier aggregation (CA), multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and coordinated multi-point (CoMP) as well as three-dimensional (3D) MIMO. Moreover, considering that network nodes will become very diverse in the future, and thus with heterogeneous network (HetNet) being a key feature of LTE-Advanced networks, we also discuss technologies of interest in HetNet scenarios, e.g., enhanced physical data control channel (ePDCCH), further enhanced inter-cell interference coordination (FeICIC) and small cells, together with energy efficiency concerns. In particular, we pay special attention to one of the most important enhancements in LTE Release 12, i.e., dynamic time division duplex (TDD) transmissions, and present performance results that shed new light on this topic., Comment: WCM

Recent years have seen rapid deployment of mobile computing and Internet of Things (IoT) networks, which can be mostly attributed to the increasing communication and sensing capabilities of wireless systems. Big data analysis, pervasive computing, and eventually artificial intelligence (AI) are envisaged to be deployed on top of the IoT and create a new world featured by data-driven AI. In this context, a novel paradigm of merging AI and wireless communications, called Wireless AI that pushes AI frontiers to the network edge, is widely regarded as a key enabler for future intelligent network evolution. To this end, we present a comprehensive survey of the latest studies in wireless AI from the data-driven perspective. Specifically, we first propose a novel Wireless AI architecture that covers five key data-driven AI themes in wireless networks, including Sensing AI, Network Device AI, Access AI, User Device AI and Data-provenance AI. Then, for each data-driven AI theme, we present an overview on the use of AI approaches to solve the emerging data-related problems and show how AI can empower wireless network functionalities. Particularly, compared to the other related survey papers, we provide an in-depth discussion on the Wireless AI applications in various data-driven domains wherein AI proves extremely useful for wireless network design and optimization. Wi-Fi technology is continuously innovating to cater to the growing customer demands, driven by the digitalisation of everything, both in the home as well as the enterprise and hotspot spaces. In this article, we introduce to the wireless community the next generation Wi-Fi$-$based on IEEE 802.11be Extremely High Throughput (EHT)$-$, present the main objectives and timelines of this new 802.11be amendment, thoroughly describe its main candidate features and enhancements, and cover the important issue of coexistence with other wireless technologies. This article provides dives into the fundamentals of dense and ultra-dense small cell wireless networks, discussing the reasons why dense and ultra-dense small cell networks are fundamentally different from sparse ones, and why the well-known linear scaling law of capacity with the base station (BS) density in the latter does not apply to the former. In more detail, we review the impact of the following factors on ultradense networks (UDNs), (i) closed-access operations and line-of-sight conditions, (ii) the near-field effect, (iii) the antenna height difference between small cell BSs and user equipments (UEs), and (iv) the surplus of idle-mode-enabled small cell BSs with respect to UEs. Combining all these network characteristics and features, we present a more realistic capacity scaling law for UDNs, which indicates (i) the existence of an optimum BS density to maximise the area spectral efficiency (ASE) for a given finite UE density, and (ii) the existence of an optimum density of UEs that can be simultaneously scheduled across the network to maximise the ASE for a given finite BS density.

In this paper, we focus on one of the key technologies for the fifth-generation wireless communication networks, massive multiple-input-multiple-output (mMIMO), by investigating two of its most relevant architectures: 1) to provide in-band backhaul for the ultra-dense network (UDN) of self-backhauled small cells (SCs), and 2) to provide direct access (DA) to user equipments (UEs). Through comprehensive 3GPP-based system-level simulations and analytical formulations, we show the end-to-end UE rates achievable with these two architectures. Differently from the existing works, we provide results for two strategies of self-backhauled SC deployments, namely random and ad-hoc, where in the latter SCs are purposely positioned close to UEs to achieve line-of-sight (LoS) access links. We also evaluate the optimal backhaul and access time resource partition due to the in-band self-backhauling (s-BH) operations. Our results show that the ad-hoc deployment of self-backhauled SCs closer to the UEs with optimal resource partition and with directive antenna patterns, provides rate improvements for cell-edge UEs that amount to 30% and tenfold gain, as compared to mMIMO DA architecture with pilot reuse 3 and reuse 1, respectively. Uplink power control is an efficient scheme to mitigate pilot contamination in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In this work, we provide a comprehensive study on the effects of fractional power control (FPC) on the downlink performance of the most relevant fifth generation (5G) massive MIMO deployments. Specifically, we perform thorough system simulations based on the most recent three dimensional spatial channel model released by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project to evaluate the impact of different deployment-related parameters such as pilot reuse factor, beamforming criterion, and base station array size. Our results indicate the most suitable tuning of the FPC parameters and show that optimized FPC provides huge gains in the cell border throughput when compared to a baseline scheme with all the users transmitting at maximum power. A key aspect of the fifth-generation wireless communication network will be the integration of different services and technologies to provide seamless connectivity. In this paper, we consider using massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) to provide backhaul links to a dense deployment of self-backhauling (s-BH) small cells (SCs) that provide cellular access within the same spectrum resources of the backhaul. Through a comprehensive system-level simulation study, we evaluate the interplay between access and backhaul and the resulting end-to-end user rates. Moreover, we analyze the impact of different SCs deployment strategies, while varying the time resource allocation between radio access and backhaul links. We finally compare the above mMIMO-based s-BH approach to a mMIMO direct access (DA) architecture accounting for the effects of pilot reuse schemes, together with their associated overhead and contamination mitigation effects. The results show that dense SCs deployments supported by mMIMO s-BH provide significant rate improvements for cell-edge users (UEs) in ultra-dense deployments with respect to mMIMO DA, while the latter outperforms mMIMO s-BH from the median UEs' standpoint.

What will it take for drones -- and the whole associated ecosystem -- to take off? Arguably, infallible command and control (C&C) channels for safe and autonomous flying, and high-throughput links for multi-purpose live video streaming. And indeed, meeting these aspirations may entail a full cellular support, provided through 5G-and-beyond hardware and software upgrades by both mobile operators and manufacturers of these unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In this article, we vouch for massive MIMO as the key building block to realize 5G-connected UAVs. Through the sheer evidence of 3GPP-compliant simulations, we demonstrate how massive MIMO can be enhanced by complementary network-based and UAV-based solutions, resulting in consistent UAV C&C support, large UAV uplink data rates, and harmonious coexistence with legacy ground users.

The purpose of this article is to bestow the reader with a timely study of UAV cellular communications, bridging the gap between the 3GPP standardization status quo and the more forward-looking research. Special emphasis is placed on the downlink command and control (C&C) channel to aerial users, whose reliability is deemed of paramount technological importance for the commercial success of UAV cellular communications. Through a realistic side-by-side comparison of two network deployments -- a present-day cellular infrastructure versus a next-generation massive MIMO system -- a plurality of key facts are cast light upon, with the three main ones summarized as follows: (i) UAV cell selection is essentially driven by the secondary lobes of a base station's radiation pattern, causing UAVs to associate to far-flung cells; (ii) over a 10 MHz bandwidth, and for UAV heights of up to 300 m, massive MIMO networks can support 100 kbps C&C channels in 74% of the cases when the uplink pilots for channel estimation are reused among base station sites, and in 96% of the cases without pilot reuse across the network; (iii) supporting UAV C&C channels can considerably affect the performance of ground users on account of severe pilot contamination, unless suitable power control policies are in place., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1802.01527

In this article, we provide a much-needed study of UAV cellular communications, focusing on the rates achievable for the UAV downlink command and control (C&C) channel. For this key performance indicator, we perform a realistic comparison between existing deployments operating in single-user mode and next-generation multi-user massive MIMO systems. We find that in single-user deployments under heavy data traffic, UAVs flying at 50 m, 150 m, and 300 m achieve the C&C target rate of 100 kbps -- as set by the 3GPP -- in a mere 35%, 2%, and 1% of the cases, respectively. Owing to mitigated interference, a stronger carrier signal, and a spatial multiplexing gain, massive MIMO time division duplex systems can dramatically increase such probability. Indeed, we show that for UAV heights up to 300 m the target rate is met with massive MIMO in 74% and 96% of the cases with and without uplink pilot reuse for channel state information (CSI) acquisition, respectively. On the other hand, the presence of UAVs can significantly degrade the performance of ground users, whose pilot signals are vulnerable to UAV-generated contamination and require protection through uplink power control.

To guarantee the success of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), one of the main challenges to solve is the efficient management of pilot contamination. Allocation of fully orthogonal pilot sequences across the network would provide a solution to the problem, but the associated overhead would make this approach infeasible in practical systems. Ongoing fifth-generation (5G) standardisation activities are debating the amount of resources to be dedicated to the transmission of pilot sequences, focussing on uplink sounding reference signals (UL SRSs) design. In this paper, we extensively evaluate the performance of various UL SRS allocation strategies in practical deployments, shedding light on their strengths and weaknesses. Furthermore, we introduce a novel UL SRS fractional reuse (FR) scheme, denoted neighbour-aware FR (FR-NA). The proposed FR-NA generalizes the fixed reuse paradigm, and entails a tradeoff between i) aggressively sharing some UL SRS resources, and ii) protecting other UL SRS resources with the aim of relieving neighbouring BSs from pilot contamination. Said features result in a cell throughput improvement over both fixed reuse and state-of-the-art FR based on a cell-centric perspective.

In order to cope with the forecasted 1000x increase in wireless capacity demands by 2030, network operators will aggressively densify their network infrastructure to reuse the spectrum as much as possible. However, it is important to realise that these new ultra-dense small cell networks are fundamentally different from the traditional macrocell or sparse small cell networks, and thus ultra-dense networks (UDNs) cannot be deployed and operated in the same way as in the last 25 years. In this paper, we systematically investigate and visualise the performance impacts of several fundamental characteristics of UDNs, that mobile operators and vendors should consider when deploying UDNs. Providing consistently high wireless capacity is becoming increasingly important to support the applications required by future digital enterprises. In this paper, we propose Eigen-direction-aware ZF (EDA-ZF) with partial coordination among base stations (BSs) and distributed interference suppression as a practical approach to achieve this objective. We compare our solution with Zero Forcing (ZF), entailing neither BS coordination or inter-cell interference mitigation, and Network MIMO (NeMIMO), where full BS coordination enables centralized inter-cell interference management. We also evaluate the performance of said schemes for three sub-6 GHz deployments with varying BS densities -- sparse, intermediate, and dense -- all with fixed total number of antennas and radiated power. Extensive simulations show that: (i) indoor massive MIMO implementing the proposed EDA-ZF provides uniformly good rates for all users; (ii) indoor network densification is detrimental unless full coordination is implemented; (iii) deploying NeMIMO pays off under strong outdoor interference, especially for cell-edge users.

This paper analyses the performance benefits of a user-centric scheduling approach, exploiting the flexibility of both dynamic time division duplex (TDD) and a variable transmission time interval (TTI), where the downlink to uplink ratio and TTI duration can be adapted to the traffic load. The formulation of the joint optimisation problem takes into consideration the individual requirements of each single user in terms of sustainable latency and desired throughput, thus implementing a real user-centric scheduling approach. We propose massive MIMO unlicensed (mMIMO-U) as a high-capacity solution for future indoor wireless networks operating in the unlicensed spectrum. Building upon massive MIMO (mMIMO), mMIMO-U incorporates additional key features, such as the capability of placing accurate radiation nulls towards coexisting nodes during the channel access and data transmission phases. We demonstrate the spectrum reuse and data rate improvements attained by mMIMO-U by comparing three practical deployments: single-antenna Wi-Fi, where an indoor operator deploys three single-antenna Wi-Fi access points (APs), and two other scenarios where the central AP is replaced by either a mMIMO AP or the proposed mMIMO-U AP. We show that upgrading the central AP with mMIMO-U provides increased channel access opportunities for all of them. In this paper, we present a new and significant theoretical discovery. If the absolute height difference between base station (BS) antenna and user equipment (UE) antenna is larger than zero, then the network performance in terms of both the coverage probability and the area spectral efficiency (ASE) will continuously decrease toward zero as the BS density increases for ultra-dense (UD) small cell networks (SCNs). Such findings are completely different from the conclusions in existing works, both quantitatively and qualitatively. In particular, this performance behavior has a tremendous impact on the deployment of UD SCNs in the 5th-generation (5G) era. Network operators may invest large amounts of money in deploying more network infrastructure to only obtain an even less network capacity. Our study results reveal that one way to address this issue is to lower the SCN BS antenna height to the UE antenna height. This paper studies the impact of the base station (BS) idle mode capability (IMC) on the network performance of multi-tier and dense heterogeneous cellular networks (HCNs). Different from most existing works that investigated network scenarios with an infinite number of user equipments (UEs), we consider a more practical setup with a finite number of UEs in our analysis. More specifically, we derive the probability of which BS tier a typical UE should associate to and the expression of the activated BS density in each tier. Based on such results, analytical expressions for the coverage probability and the area spectral efficiency (ASE) in each tier are also obtained. The impact of the IMC on the performance of all BS tiers is shown to be significant. In particular, there will be a surplus of BSs when the BS density in each tier exceeds the UE density, and the overall coverage probability as well as the ASE continuously increase when the BS IMC is applied. Nowadays, the demand for wireless mobile services is copious, and will continue increasing in the near future. Mobile cellular operators are therefore looking at the unlicensed spectrum as an economical supplement to augment the capacity of their soon-to-be overloaded networks. The same unlicensed bands are luring internet service providers, venue owners, and authorities into autonomously setting up and managing their high-performance private networks. In light of this exciting future, ensuring coexistence between multiple unlicensed technologies becomes a pivotal issue. We consider cellular base stations (BSs) equipped with a large number of antennas and operating in the unlicensed band. We denote such system as massive MIMO unlicensed (mMIMO-U). We design the key procedures required to guarantee coexistence between a cellular BS and nearby Wi-Fi devices. These include: neighboring Wi-Fi channel covariance estimation, allocation of spatial degrees of freedom for interference suppression, and enhanced channel sensing and data transmission phases. We evaluate the performance of the so-designed mMIMO-U, showing that it allows simultaneous cellular and Wi-Fi transmissions by keeping their mutual interference below the regulatory threshold. The same is not true for conventional listen-before-talk (LBT) operations. In this paper, we conduct performance evaluation for Ultra-Dense Networks (UDNs), and identify which modelling factors play major roles and minor roles. From our study, we draw the following conclusions. First, there are 3 factors/models that have a major impact on the performance of UDNs, and they should be considered when performing theoretical analyses: i) a multi-piece path loss model with line-of-sight (LoS) and non-lineof- sight (NLoS) transmissions; ii) a non-zero antenna height difference between base stations (BSs) and user equipments (UEs); iii) a finite BS/UE density. Second, there are 4 factors/models that have a minor impact on the performance of UDNs, i.e., changing the results quantitatively but not qualitatively, and thus their incorporation into theoretical analyses is less urgent: i) a general multi-path fading model based on Rician fading; ii) a correlated shadow fading model; iii) a BS density dependent transmission power; iv) a deterministic BS/user density. Finally, there are 5 factors/models for future study: i) a BS vertical antenna pattern; ii) multi-antenna and/or multi-BS joint transmissions; iii) a proportional fair BS scheduler; iv) a non-uniform distribution of BSs; v) a dynamic time division duplex (TDD) or full duplex (FD) network. Coexistence with Wi-Fi is the key issue for unlicensed band LTE. The main coexistence mechanism is Listen-Before-Talk, whereby radio frequency energy is sensed over a short period of time and compared to a threshold. Given the default energy thresholds, the energy sensing range is actually much less than the cell range. Both technologies can experience collisions due to transmission being below energy detection threshold. Currently Wi-Fi is agnostic of LTE presence in the unlicensed spectrum. To improve coexistence a communications channel via relaying is proposed to be used by the unlicensed band LTE, to announce its presence on an unlicensed channel. Legacy Wi-Fi APs may be programmed to interpret and respond by firmware upgrade at the AP to enhance its channel selection algorithm. We propose to operate massive multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) cellular base stations (BSs) in unlicensed bands. We denote such system as massive MIMO unlicensed (mMIMO-U). We design the key procedures required at a cellular BS to guarantee coexistence with nearby Wi-Fi devices operating in the same band. In particular, spatial reuse is enhanced by actively suppressing interference towards neighboring Wi-Fi devices. Wi-Fi interference rejection is also performed during an enhanced listen-before-talk (LBT) phase. These operations enable Wi-Fi devices to access the channel as though no cellular BSs were transmitting, and vice versa. Under concurrent Wi-Fi and BS transmissions, the downlink rates attainable by cellular user equipment (UEs) are degraded by the Wi-Fi-generated interference. To mitigate this effect, we select a suitable set of UEs to be served in the unlicensed band accounting for a measure of the Wi-Fi/UE proximity. Our results show that the so-designed mMIMO-U allows simultaneous cellular and Wi-Fi transmissions by keeping their mutual interference below the regulatory threshold. Compared to a system without interference suppression, Wi-Fi devices enjoy a median interference power reduction of between 3 dB with 16 antennas and 18 dB with 128 antennas. With mMIMO-U, cellular BSs can also achieve large data rates without significantly degrading the performance of Wi-Fi networks deployed within their coverage area.

In ultra-dense small cell networks, spatial multiplexing gain is a challenge because of the different propagation conditions. The channels associated with different transmitreceive pairs can be highly correlated due to the i) high probability of line-of-sight (LOS) communication between user equipment (UE) and base station (BS), and ii) insufficient spacing between antenna elements at both UE and BS. In this paper, we propose a novel transmission technique titled Diversity Pulse Shaped Transmission (DPST) to enhance the throughput over the correlated MIMO channels in an ultra-dense small cell network. The fundamental of DPST is to shape transmit signals at adjacent antennas with distinct interpolating filters, introducing pulse shaping diversity. In DPST, each antenna transmits its own data stream with a relative deterministic time offset-which must be a fraction of the symbol period-with respect to the adjacent antenna. The delay is interpolated with the pulse shaped signal generating a virtual MIMO channel that benefits from increased diversity from the receiver perspective. To extract the diversity, the receiver must operate in an over-sampled domain and hence a fractionally spaced equaliser (FSE) is proposed. The joint impact of DPST and FSE helps the receiver to sense a less correlated channel, eventually enhancing the UE's throughput. Moreover, in order to minimise the spatial correlation, we aim to optimise the deterministic fractional delay. Simulation results show that applying DPST to a correlated channel can approximately enhance the UE throughput by 1.93x and 3.76x in 2x2 and 4x4 MIMO systems, respectively., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. In this paper, we analyse the performance of dense small cell network (SCNs). We derive analytical expressions for both their coverage probability and their area spectral efficiency (ASE) using a path loss model that considers both line-of-sight (LOS) and non-LOS (NLOS) components. Due to the close proximity of small cell base stations (BSs) and user equipments (UEs) in such dense SCNs, we also consider Rician fading as the multi-path fading channel model for both the LOS and NLOS fading transmissions. The Rayleigh fading used in most of existing works analysing dense SCNs is not accurate enough. Then, we compare the performance impact of LOS and NLOS transmissions in dense SCNs under Rician fading with that based on Rayleigh fading. The analysis and the simulation results show that in dense SCNs where LOS transmissions dominate the performance, the impact of Rician fading on the overall system performance is minor, and does not help to address the performance losses brought by the transition of many interfering signals from NLOS to LOS., Comment: 24 pages, 3 figures. In this paper, we analyse the coverage probability and the area spectral efficiency (ASE) for the uplink (UL) of dense small cell networks (SCNs) considering a practical path loss model incorporating both line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) transmissions. Compared with the existing work, we adopt the following novel approaches in our study: (i) we assume a practical user association strategy (UAS) based on the smallest path loss, or equivalently the strongest received signal strength; (ii) we model the positions of both base stations (BSs) and the user equipments (UEs) as two independent Homogeneous Poisson point processes (HPPPs); and (iii) the correlation of BSs' and UEs' positions is considered, thus making our analytical results more accurate. The performance impact of LoS and NLoS transmissions on the ASE for the UL of dense SCNs is shown to be significant, both quantitatively and qualitatively, compared with existing work that does not differentiate LoS and NLoS transmissions. In particular, existing work predicted that a larger UL power compensation factor would always result in a better ASE in the practical range of BS density, i.e., 10^1-10^3 BSs/km^2. However, our results show that a smaller UL power compensation factor can greatly boost the ASE in the UL of dense SCNs, i.e., 10^2-10^3 BSs/km^2, while a larger UL power compensation factor is more suitable for sparse SCNs, i.e., 10^1-10^2 BSs/km^2.

Very recent studies showed that in a fully loaded dense small cell network (SCN), the coverage probability performance will continuously decrease with the network densification. Such new results were captured in IEEE ComSoc Technology News with an alarming title of "Will Densification Be the Death of 5G?". In this paper, we revisit this issue from more practical views of realistic network deployment, such as a finite number of active base stations (BSs) and user equipments (UEs), a decreasing BS transmission power with the network densification, etc. Particularly, in dense SCNs, due to an oversupply of BSs with respect to UEs, a large number of BSs can be put into idle modes without signal transmission, if there is no active UE within their coverage areas. Setting those BSs into idle modes mitigates unnecessary inter-cell interference and reduces energy consumption. In this paper, we investigate the performance impact of such BS idle mode capability (IMC) on dense SCNs. Different from existing work, we consider a realistic path loss model incorporating both line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) transmissions. Moreover, we obtain analytical results for the coverage probability, the area spectral efficiency (ASE) and the energy efficiency (EE) performance for SCNs with the BS IMC and show that the performance impact of the IMC on dense SCNs is significant. As the BS density surpasses the UE density in dense SCNs, the coverage probability will continuously increase toward one, addressing previous concerns on "the death of 5G". 3GPP LWIP Release 13 technology and its prestandard version Wi-Fi Boost have recently emerged as an efficient LTE and Wi-Fi integration at the IP layer, allowing uplink on LTE and downlink on Wi-Fi. This solves all the contention problems of Wi-Fi and allows an optimum usage of the unlicensed band for downlink. In this paper, we present a new feature of Wi-Fi Boost, its radio link management, which allows to steer the downlink traffic between both LTE and Wi-Fi upon congestion detection in an intelligent manner. This customised congestion detection algorithm is based on IP probing, and can work with any Wi-Fi access point. Simulation results in a typical enterprise scenario show that LWIP R13 and Wi-Fi Boost can enhance network performance up to 5x and 6x over LTE-only, and 4x and 5x over Wi-Fi only networks, respectively, and that the the proposed radio link management can further improve Wi-Fi Boost performance over LWIP R13 up to 19 %. Spatial multiplexing (SM) gains in multiple input multiple output (MIMO) cellular networks are limited when used in combination with ultra-dense small cell networks. This limitation is due to large spatial correlation among channel pairs. More specifically, it is due to i) line-of-sight (LOS) communication between user equipment (UE) and base station (BS) and ii) in-sufficient spacing between antenna elements. We propose to shape transmit signals at adjacent antennas with distinct interpolating filters which introduces pulse shaping diversity eventually leading to improved SINR and throughput at the UEs. In this technique, each antenna transmits its own data stream with a relative offset with respect to adjacent antenna. The delay which must be a fraction of symbol period is interpolated with the pulse shaped signal and generates a virtual MIMO channel that leads to improved diversity and SINR at the receiver. Note that non-integral sampling periods with inter-symbol interference (ISI) should be mitigated at the receiver. For this, we propose to use a fractionally spaced equalizer (FSE) designed based on the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) criterion.
