Abstract

The liquid metal shield laboratory (LiMeS-Lab) will provide the infrastructure to develop, test, and compare liquid metal divertor designs for future fusion reactors. The main research topics of LiMeS-lab will be liquid metal interactions with the substrate material of the divertor, the continuous circulation and capillary refilling of the liquid metal during intense plasma heat loading and the retention of plasma particles in the liquid metal. To facilitate the research, four new devices are in development at the Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research and the Eindhoven University of Technology: LiMeS-AM: a custom metal 3D printer based on powder bed fusion; LiMeS-Wetting, a plasma device to study the wetting of liquid metals on various substrates with different surface treatments; LiMeS-PSI, a linear plasma generator specifically adapted to operate continuous liquid metal loops. Special diagnostic protection will also be implemented to perform measurements in long duration shots without being affected by the liquid metal vapor; LiMeS-TDS, a thermal desorption spectroscopy system to characterize deuterium retention in a metal vapor environment. Each of these devices has specific challenges due to the presence and deposition of metal vapors that need to be addressed in order to function. In this paper, an overview of LiMeS-Lab will be given and the conceptual designs of the last three devices will be presented.

Abstract

Collective Thomson scattering (CTS) is a microwave diagnostic allowing measurements of a number of plasma parameters such as the bulk ion temperature, the plasma composition, drift velocities and fast ion velocity distribution function. A CTS system has been successfully installed and commissioned on the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator. The measured spectra are analyzed by the means of the CTS forward model eCTS and the Minerva scientific framework enabling the use of Bayesian inference of relevant plasma parameters. Here we discuss the options for further optimization of the CTS diagnostic and focus on two topics of importance for the inference of bulk ion temperature values from CTS spectra: influence of impurities on the CTS spectra and the width of the notch filters that are employed to protect the receiver from high-power radiation. In addition to that we discuss the possibility of effective charge measurements by CTS. We explore the existence of an optimal notch filter width.

Abstract

In this paper, we present a method for numerical computation of collective Thomson scattering (CTS). We developed a forward model, eCTS, in the electrostatic approximation and benchmarked it against a full electromagnetic model. Differences between the electrostatic and the electromagnetic models are discussed. The sensitivity of the results to the ion temperature and the plasma composition is demonstrated. We integrated the model into the Bayesian data analysis framework Minerva and used it for the analysis of noisy synthetic data sets produced by a full electromagnetic model. It is shown that eCTS can be used for the inference of the bulk ion temperature. The model has been used to infer the bulk ion temperature from the first CTS measurements on Wendelstein 7-X.

Abstract

Measurements of synchrotron radiation emitted by 30-MeV runaway electrons in the TEXTOR-94 tokamak show that the runaway population decays after switching on neutral beam injection (NBI). The decay starts only with a significant delay, which decreases with increasing NBI heating power. This delay provides direct evidence of the energy dependence of runaway confinement, which is expected if magnetic modes govern the loss of runaways. Application of the theory by Mynick and Strachan [Phys. Fluids 24, 695 (1981)] yields estimates for the "mode width" (delta) of magnetic perturbations: delta < 0.5 cm in Ohmic discharges, increasing to delta = 4.4 cm for 0.6 MW NBI.

Abstract

The FOM-Institute for Plasma Physics is preparing the construction of Magnum-psi, a magnetized (3 T), steady-state, large area (100 cm²), high-flux (up to 1024 H+ ions m-2s-1) plasma generator. Magnum-psi will be used to study plasma-surface interaction in conditions similar to those in the divertor of ITER and fusion reactors beyond ITER. The active magnetic field region is required to be 4 meter long, 1 meter diameter and steady state. This, together with the need for minimization of the running costs, makes the application of superconducting coils imperative. The magnet system will be unique because of its maximum transparency to provide optimal radial access to the experimental region inside the magnet bore. In this contribution we present a magnet configuration that consists of 5 cylindrical, conduction cooled NbTi coils. These generate an axial field of 3 T with a maximum field on the coils below 6 T. Two cryogenic structures are proposed: the discrete coils are either placed within separate cryostats or are supported by a single cylinder in a shared cryostat with 32 room temperature view ports. Room temperature iron rings close to the outer coils reduce the axial forces that would otherwise put severe constraints on the mechanical structure. Abstract

The FOM-Institute for Plasma Physics -- together with its TEC partners -- is preparing the construction of Magnum-psi, a magnetized (3 T), steady-state, large area (100 cm²), high-flux (up to 1024 H+ ions m-2s-1) plasma generator. In order to explore and develop the techniques to be applied in Magnum-psi, a pilot experiment (Pilot-psi), with a magnetic field up to 1.6 Tesla, has been constructed. One of the main design questions of Magnum-psi is how to produce the required flux. The results of Thomson Scattering and high-resolution spectroscopy on Pilot-psi plasmas presented in this paper demonstrate that a cascaded arc plasma expanding at low pressure and eventually confined by a strong magnetic field is a very good candidate to produce the required ion flux. In Pilot-psi fluxes well in excess of 1023 m-2s-1 can be reached over 1 cm². [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Recently, the dynamic ergodic divertor (DED) of TEXTOR has been studied in an m/n= 3/1 set-up which is characterized by a relatively deep penetration of the perturbation field. The perturbation field creates (a) a helical divertor, (b) an ergodic pattern and/or (c) excitation of tearing modes, depending on whether the DED current is static, rotating in the co-current direction or in the counter-current direction. Characteristic divertor properties such as the high recycling regime or enhanced shielding have been studied. A strong effect of the ergodization is spin up of the plasma rotation, possibly due to the electric field at the plasma edge. Tearing modes are excited in a rather reproducible way and their excitation threshold value, their motion and their reduction due to the ECRH/ECCD have been studied. The different scenarios are characterized by strong modifications of the toroidal velocity profile and by a reduced or enhanced radial transport.
