In this experiment, carbon microrods were grown from ethylene using laser-assisted chemical vapor deposition. An analysis of the spectra gave insight in the bonding conditions as well as the growth mechanism of the rods as a function of the experimental parameters.

Carbon microrods were grown from ethylene using laser-assisted chemical vapor deposition. The precursor pressure and laser power were varied. The internal structure of the carbon rods was characterized by Raman spectroscopy at 514.5 nm using an Ar[sup +] laser. The rods were cast in epoxy resin and polished in order to allow a radial analysis of the cross section. Each spectrum has been analyzed by noting the peak positions and width changes. Intensities of the G and D peaks were compared between spectra and allowed the determination of the crystal size as a function of radius. An analysis of the spectra gave insight in the bonding conditions as well as the growth mechanism of the rods as a function of the experimental parameters. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. Purpose: This paper presents an overview of multisource inverse-geometry computed tomography (IGCT) as well as the development of a gantry-based research prototype system. The development of the distributed x-ray source is covered in a companion paper [V. B. Neculaes et al., "Multisource inverse-geometry CT. Part II. X-ray source design and prototype," Med. Phys. 43, 4617-4627 (2016)]. While progress updates of this development have been presented at conferences and in journal papers, this paper is the first comprehensive overview of the multisource inverse-geometry CT concept and prototype. The authors also provide a review of all previous IGCT related publications., Methods: The authors designed and implemented a gantry-based 32-source IGCT scanner with 22 cm field-of-view, 16 cm z-coverage, 1 s rotation time, 1.09 × 1.024 mm detector cell size, as low as 0.4 × 0.8 mm focal spot size and 80-140 kVp x-ray source voltage. The system is built using commercially available CT components and a custom made distributed x-ray source. The authors developed dedicated controls, calibrations, and reconstruction algorithms and evaluated the system performance using phantoms and small animals., Results: The authors performed IGCT system experiments and demonstrated tube current up to 125 mA with up to 32 focal spots. The authors measured a spatial resolution of 13 lp/cm at 5% cutoff. The scatter-to-primary ratio is estimated 62% for a 32 cm water phantom at 140 kVp. The authors scanned several phantoms and small animals. The initial images have relatively high noise due to the low x-ray flux levels but minimal artifacts., Conclusions: IGCT has unique benefits in terms of dose-efficiency and cone-beam artifacts, but comes with challenges in terms of scattered radiation and x-ray flux limits. To the authors' knowledge, their prototype is the first gantry-based IGCT scanner. The authors summarized the design and implementation of the scanner and the authors presented results with phantoms and small animals.

We report a new methodology based on glancing angle deposition (GLAD) of an organic molecule in combination with perpendicular growth of a second inorganic material. The resulting thin films retain a very well-defined tilted columnar microstructure characteristic of GLAD with the inorganic material embedded inside the columns. We refer to this new methodology as growth assisted by glancing angle deposition or GAGLAD, since the material of interest (here, the inorganic) grows in the form of tilted columns, though it is deposited under a nonglancing configuration. As a "proof of concept", we have used silver and zinc oxide as the perpendicularly deposited material since they usually form ill-defined columnar microstructures at room temperature by GLAD. By means of our GAGLAD methodology, the typical tilted columnar microstructure can be developed for materials that otherwise do not form ordered structures under conventional GLAD. This simple methodology broadens significantly the range of materials where control of the microstructure can be achieved by tuning the geometrical deposition parameters. The two examples presented here, Ag/Alq3 and ZnO/Alq3, have been deposited by physical vapor deposition (PVD) and plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), respectively: two different vacuum techniques that illustrate the generality of the proposed technique. The two type of hybrid samples present very interesting properties that demonstrate the potentiality of GAGLAD. On one hand, the Ag/Alq3 samples present highly optical anisotropic properties when they are analyzed with linearly polarized light. To our knowledge, these Ag/Alq3 samples present the highest angular selectivity reported in the visible range. On the other hand, ZnO/Alq3 samples are used to develop highly porous ZnO thin films by using Alq3 as sacrificial material. In this way, antireflective ZnO samples with very low refractive index and extinction coefficient have been obtained.

The joining of macroscopic films of vertically aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to titanium substrates is demonstrated by active vacuum brazing at 820 °C with a Ag-Cu-Ti alloy and at 880 °C with a Cu-Sn-Ti-Zr alloy. The brazing methodology was elaborated in order to enable the production of highly electrically and thermally conductive CNT/metal substrate contacts. The interfacial electrical resistances of the joints were measured to be as low as 0.35 Ω . The improved interfacial transport properties in the brazed films lead to superior electron field-emission properties when compared to the as-grown films. An emission current of 150 μ A was drawn from the brazed nanotubes at an applied electric field of 0.6 V μ m -1 . The improvement in electron field-emission is mainly attributed to the reduction of the contact resistance between the nanotubes and the substrate. The joints have high re-melting temperatures up to the solidus temperatures of the alloys; far greater than what is achievable with standard solders, thus expanding the application potential of CNT films to high-current and high-power applications where substantial frictional or resistive heating is expected.

We present initial experimental results of a rotating-gantry multi-source inverse-geometry CT (MS-IGCT) system. The MS-IGCT system was built with a single module of 2 × 4 x-ray sources and a 2D detector array. It produced a 75 mm in-plane field-of-view (FOV) with 160 mm axial coverage in a single gantry rotation. To evaluate system performance, a 2.5 inch diameter uniform PMMA cylinder phantom, a 200 µm diameter tungsten wire, and a euthanized rat were scanned. Each scan acquired 125 views per source and the gantry rotation time was 1 s per revolution. Geometric calibration was performed using a bead phantom. The scanning parameters were 80 kVp, 125 mA, and 5.4 µs pulse per source location per view. A data normalization technique was applied to the acquired projection data, and beam hardening and spectral nonlinearities of each detector channel were corrected. For image reconstruction, the projection data of each source row were rebinned into a full cone beam data set, and the FDK algorithm was used. The reconstructed volumes from upper and lower source rows shared an overlap volume which was combined in image space. The images of the uniform PMMA cylinder phantom showed good uniformity and no apparent artifacts. The measured in-plane MTF showed 13 lp cm(-1) at 10% cutoff, in good agreement with expectations. The rat data were also reconstructed reliably. The initial experimental results from this rotating-gantry MS-IGCT system demonstrated its ability to image a complex anatomical object without any significant image artifacts and to achieve high image resolution and large axial coverage in a single gantry rotation.

Ultrafine grained aluminum alloys have restricted applicability due to their limited thermal stability. Metalized 7475 alloys can be soldered and brazed at room temperature using nanotechnology. Reactive foils are used to release heat for milliseconds directly at the interface between two components leading to a metallurgical joint without significantly heating the bulk alloy, thus preserving its mechanical properties., (Copyright © 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The adsorption and desorption behavior of poly(amido amine) (PAMAM) dendrimers at the water-silica interface was investigated by optical reflectometry. Polymer desorption upon dilution was studied as a function of generation (i.e., molecular mass), solution pH, and ionic strength. Three distinct adsorption regimes upon flushing with dendrimer-free solutions were identified. (i) Completely reversible adsorption refers to rapid and complete desorption. (ii) Partially reversible adsorption is characterized by rapid but partial desorption and a remaining irreversibly bound fraction. (iii) Irreversible adsorption refers to the case where there is no detectable change in the adsorbed mass. The system tends to be completely reversible for low generations, low pH values, and high ionic strengths, while it tends to be irreversible for high generations, high pH values, and low ionic strengths. The parameters for which these regimes are found are summarized in corresponding adsorption maps.

A CO2 laser (lambda = 10.6 microm) was used to heat a solution of water and alcohol saturated by Zn(AcAc)2 on a fused quartz substrate in open air. After only a few seconds of irradiation, various zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures including nanorods and nanowires are formed near the center of the irradiated zone, surrounded by a porous thin film of ZnO nanoparticles. The type of structures produced and their localization on the substrate can be varied by selecting adequate irradiation time and laser power ranges. The deposits have been analyzed using SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, and Raman spectroscopy, revealing that the nanorods (aspect ratio ~6) and nanowires (aspect ratio ~94) are single-crystalline structures which grow along the c axis of wurtzite ZnO. The nanoparticles are also single-crystalline and have an average diameter of 16 nm. A qualitative model for nanostructure growth is proposed, based on previous studies of aqueous solution and hydrothermal processing.
