Simple Summary: The scarcity of specific clinical and dermoscopic criteria makes solitary pink skin lesions the most challenging to diagnose. Cherry angioma, clear cell acanthoma, dermal nevus, keloid, hypertrophic scar, and Spitz nevus are the most common benign lesions that share similar clinical and dermoscopic features. Furthermore, some malignant lesions, such as basal cell carcinoma, actinic keratosis, or amelanotic melanoma, can be indistinguishable from the above-mentioned benign pinkish lesions. Several studies have demonstrated the excellent diagnostic accuracy of reflectance confocal microscopy in increasing sensitivity and specificity compared to dermoscopy alone for the diagnosis of skin cancer. This study aimed to summarize the application of dermoscopy and RCM for the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant pinkish–reddish skin lesions, although, in suspicious lesions, the final diagnosis should always be confirmed after surgical excision and histopathological evaluation. Aim: Coralligenous reefs are the main marine bioconstructions in terms of spatial distribution within the Mediterranean basin. Two distinct reef morphologies can be distinguished based on the surface and topographical features of the seafloor: cliffs developing vertical slopes and banks found on gently steep or horizontal bottoms. Despite their importance for monitoring and conservation efforts, observations regarding the variability of biogeographical patterns are scarce. Here, we aimed to assess the differences in the composition and structure of these cliffs across ecoregions and estimate the relative role of abiotic environmental features, geographic location, and connectivity in shaping diversity patterns. Location: The study was carried out in the Central‐Western Mediterranean Sea. Samples were collected at 65 sites across the Algero‐Provençal Basin, the Ionian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Methods: We assessed the composition and structure of coralligenous cliffs through photographic samplings collected by scuba divers. Patterns in α‐ and β‐diversity were associated with 9 abiotic environmental variables, latitudinal and longitudinal gradients, and connectivity measures using Generalized Additive (GAM) and Conditional Autoregressive (CAR) models. Results: Coralligenous cliffs were primarily composed of algae and displayed a high degree of variability. The Partition Around Medoids (PAM) clustering method successfully delineated seven distinct clusters with a non‐uniform distribution within the studied ecoregions. The α‐diversity increased in eastern and northern sites and with phosphate concentration, while decreased with temperature, chlorophyll and nitrates concentration. β‐diversity at the site level increased with temperature, while it was negatively affected by northward current speed and chlorophyll concentration. Moveover, β‐diversity increased within connected sites. Main Conclusions: Coralligenous cliff diversity responds both to the physico‐chemical features of the habitat and between‐habitats connectivity. However, our findings suggest that small‐scale abiotic and biotic processes could contribute to explaining the variability observed. Melasma is a frequent condition worldwide, and it represents one of the most challenging disorders to treat in cosmetic dermatology. One of the critical factors for treatment prognosis is the assessment of the depth and distribution of pigment within the hyperpigmented area. Nowadays, non‐invasive skin imaging techniques, such as reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM), have been used to estimate pigment distribution and depth within different skin layers. This article aims to provide a systematic review of RCM applications in melasma, providing terminology and investigating characteristics of melasma at baseline and after medical and laser treatment. Our results support the recognition of two main types of melasma, epidermal and mixed type, thanks to the role of RCM in highlighting the precise pigment depth location in the skin non‐invasively. RCM treatment monitoring enables the objectification of pigment variations after treatment and the identification of prognostic factors for different treatment modalities. After the era of the application of RCM as a technique applied strictly to skin cancers, additional cosmetic applications are emerging, such as the application of melasma treatment monitoring. Simple Summary: This study investigates the characteristics of metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) to improve patient risk stratification. By comparing patients with metastatic and non-metastatic cSCC, we analyzed cSCC skin samples for histological parameters and gene expression profiles. Out of 770 genes tested, 67 were differentially expressed in metastatic cSCC. These were mainly related to immune regulation, skin integrity, angiogenesis, cell migration, and proliferation. The findings suggest that combining histological and molecular profiles can help identify features specific to metastatic cSCC, potentially enhancing patient risk assessment. Background: A subset of patients affected by cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) can exhibit locally invasive or metastatic tumors. Different staging classification systems are currently in use for cSCC. However, precise patient risk stratification has yet to be reached in clinical practice. The study aims to identify specific histological and molecular parameters characterizing metastatic cSCC. Methods: Patients affected by metastatic and non-metastatic cSCC (controls) were included in the present study and matched for clinical and histological characteristics. Skin samples from primary tumors were revised for several histological parameters and also underwent gene expression profiling with a commercially available panel testing 770 different genes. Results: In total, 48 subjects were enrolled in the study (24 cases, 24 controls); 67 genes were found to be differentially expressed between metastatic and non-metastatic cSCC. Most such genes were involved in immune regulation, skin integrity, angiogenesis, cell migration and proliferation. Conclusion: The combination of histological and molecular profiles of cSCCs allows the identification of features specific to metastatic cSCC, with potential implications for more precise patient risk stratification. The article discusses the validation of the BAUSSS biomarker as a risk staging tool for patients with primary melanoma. The BAUSSS algorithm incorporates Breslow thickness, age, ulceration, subtype, sex, and site to assess prognosis. The authors compare the BAUSSS biomarker to other nomograms and conclude that Lifemath is the most reliable online tool for melanoma prognosis. They address concerns raised by another study and maintain that BAUSSS is a simple and effective predictor of survival risk in melanoma patients. BackgroundSome results from laboratory and epidemiologic studies suggest that diet may influence the risk of melanoma, but convincing evidence for a role of single nutrients or food items is lacking. Diet quality, which considers the combined effect of multiple food items, may be superior for examining this relation.ObjectiveWe sought to assess whether diet quality, evaluated with the use of 4 different dietary indexes, is associated with melanoma risk.MethodsIn this population-based case-control study, we analyzed the relation between 4 diet quality indexes, the Healthy Eating Index 2010 (HEI-2010), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) index, Greek Mediterranean Index (GMI), and Italian Mediterranean Index (IMI), and melanoma risk in a northern Italian community, with the use of data from 380 cases and 719 matched controls who completed a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire.ResultsIn the overall sample, we found an inverse association between disease risk and the HEI-2010 and DASH index, but not the Mediterranean indexes, adjusting for potential confounders (skin phototype, body mass index, energy intake, sunburn history, skin sun reaction, and education). However, in sex stratified analyses, the association appeared only in women (P-trend: 0.10 and 0.04 for the HEI-2010 and DASH index, respectively). The inverse relations were stronger in women younger than age 50 y than in older women, for whom the GMI and IMI scores also showed an inverse association with disease risk (P-trend: 0.05 and 0.02, respectively).ConclusionsThese results suggest that diet quality may play a role in cutaneous melanoma etiology among women.
