Bio-inspired structured adhesives have promising applications in many fields, like biomedicine, robotics, and aerospace. However, achieving robust and switchable adhesion in structured adhesives on non-planar surfaces remains highly challenging. Inspired by the gripping and rolling motions of gecko toes, a strong and switchable adhesive, which comprises a pillar array with radial-oriented spatular tips and is named as PROST, is developed. PROST possesses a robust adhesion on flat surfaces and doubles its adhesion on curved surfaces. Moreover, in situ and fast adhesion switching of PROST on flat/curved surfaces in dry and wet conditions has been realized by solvent stimulation, mimicking the bending locomotion of gecko toes. The work here provides a new strategy for designing controllable adhesion on curved substrates.

Wound healing is a critical challenge in diabetic patients, mainly due to long-term dysglycemia and its related pathological complications. Subcutaneous insulin injection represents a typical clinical solution, while the low controllability of insulin administration commonly leads to a result far from the optimal therapeutic effect. In this work, we developed a glucose-responsive insulin-releasing hydrogel for microneedle dressing fabrication and then investigated its effects on diabetic wound healing. The hydrogel system was composed of biocompatible gelatin methacrylate (GelMa), glucose-responsive monomer 4-(2-acrylamidoethylcarbamoyl)-3-fluorophenylboronic acid (AFPBA) and gluconic insulin (G-insulin), and the Gel-AFPBA-ins hydrogel-based microneedle dressing was developed by replicating PDMS molds. The resultant hydrogel microneedle dressing exhibited adequate mechanical properties, high biocompatibility, glucose-responsive insulin release behavior upon exposure to different glucose solutions, and potent adhesion to the skin compared to hydrogels without microstructures. The microneedle dressing could accelerate the diabetic wound healing process with decreased inflammatory reaction, enhanced collagen deposition on the regenerated tissue sites, and improved blood glucose control in animals. Therefore, the glucose-responsive insulin-releasing hydrogel microneedle dressing is effective in diabetic wound management and has potential for treatment of other chronic skin injuries.

Drug delivery with customized combinations of drugs, controllable drug dosage, and on-demand release kinetics is critical for personalized medicine. In this study, inspired by successive opening of layered structures and compartmentalized structures in plants, we designed a multiple compartmentalized capsular structure for controlled drug delivery. The structure was designed as a series of compartments, defined by the gradient thickness of their external walls and internal divisions. Based on the careful choice and optimization of bioinks composed of gelatin, starch, and alginate, the capsular structures were successfully manufactured by fused deposition modeling three-dimensional (3D) printing. The capsules showed fusion and firm contact between printed layers, forming complete structures without significant defects on the external walls and internal joints. Internal cavities with different volumes were achieved for different drug loading as designed. In vitro swelling demonstrated a successive dissolving and opening of external walls of different capsule compartments, allowing successive drug pulses from the capsules, resulting in the sustained release for about 410 min. The drug release was significantly prolonged compared to a single burst release from a traditional capsular design. The bioinspired design and manufacture of multiple compartmentalized capsules enable customized drug release in a controllable fashion with combinations of different drugs, drug doses, and release kinetics, and have potential for use in personalized medicine.

The topographic cues of wound dressings play important roles in regulating cellular behaviors, such as cellular migration and morphology, and are capable of providing a prolonged stimulus for promoting wound healing. However, three-dimensional porous dressings that can guide wound healing from the periphery to the center have been poorly studied. Herein, radial sponges with adjustable lamellar spacing and microridge spacing by ice templating are developed to facilitate wound healing. With denser lamellae and microridges, fibroblasts achieve a more orderly arrangement, a larger elongation, and a greater migration rate. Meanwhile, the elongated state enables human umbilical vein endothelial cells to vascularization. The faster healing rate and a higher degree of vascularization based on radial sponges are further demonstrated in full-thickness skin defects in rats. Taken together, radial sponges with the densest lamellae and microridges perform the best in guiding the wound from the periphery to the center of the repair environment. Phloem-feeding insects cause massive losses in agriculture and horticulture. Host plant resistance to phloem-feeding insects is often mediated by changes in phloem composition, which deter insect settling and feeding and decrease viability. Here, we report that rice plant resistance to the phloem-feeding brown planthopper (BPH) is associated with fortification of the sclerenchyma tissue, which is located just beneath the epidermis and a cell layer or two away from the vascular bundle in the rice leaf sheath. We found that BPHs prefer to feed on the smooth and soft region on the surface of rice leaf sheaths called the long-cell block. We identified Bph30 as a rice BPH resistance gene that prevents BPH stylets from reaching the phloem due to the fortified sclerenchyma. Bph30 is strongly expressed in sclerenchyma cells and enhances cellulose and hemicellulose synthesis, making the cell walls stiffer and sclerenchyma thicker. The structurally fortified sclerenchyma is a formidable barrier preventing BPH stylets from penetrating the leaf sheath tissues and arriving at the phloem to feed. Bph30 belongs to a novel gene family, encoding a protein with two leucine-rich domains. Another member of the family, Bph40, also conferred resistance to BPH. Collectively, the fortified sclerenchyma-mediated resistance mechanism revealed in this study expands our understanding of plant-insect interactions and opens a new path for controlling planthoppers in rice.

A microlens array (MLA) is an essential optical imaging device in the applications of augmented and virtual realities. The imaging of MLA would become blurry in a humid outdoor atmosphere. While the incorporation of superhydrophobicity to MLA would prevent the adhesion of droplets, the complex structure and the multiple fabrication process reduce the capability of optical imaging of MLA. Herein, a flexible superhydrophobic MLA with good optical imaging capability is successfully fabricated by the combination of 3D direct laser writing (DLW) and soft lithography. 3D DLW allows the fabrication of MLA with a hierarchical pillar array (h-MLA) in one step, which ensures good optical properties of the resulting polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) h-MLA. The resulting h-MLAs with pitches ranging between 50 and 100 μm are superhydrophobic from which water droplets slide away at a sliding angle smaller than 15.6° and bounce off from the surface. Meanwhile, the hierarchical pillar array has a limited impact on the imaging capability and the field of view of h-MLA. With an optimized pitch of 60 μm, h-MLA has a transparency as good as MLA. Moreover, PDMS h-MLA retains excellent optical and superhydrophobic properties when bent and in an extremely humid environment. We believe that the proposed h-MLA could find applications in outdoor environments.

Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) is among the most developed technologies for green hydrogen generation. Despite the tremendous achievements in boosting the catalytic activity of the electrode, the operating current density of modern water electrolyzers is yet much lower than the emerging approaches such as the proton-exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). One of the dominant hindering factors is the high overpotentials induced by the gas bubbles. Herein, the bubble dynamics via creating the superaerophobic electrode assembly is optimized. The patterned Co-Ni phosphide/spinel oxide heterostructure shows complete wetting of water droplet with fast spreading time (≈300 ms) whereas complete underwater bubble repelling with 180° contact angle is achieved. Stimuli-responsive micro/nanostructures that exhibit not only programmable but also reprogrammable actuation behaviors are highly desirable for various advanced engineering applications (e.g., anticounterfeiting, information encoding, dynamic imaging and display, microrobotics, etc.) but yet to be realized with state-of-the-art technologies. Here we report a concept and a corresponding experimental technique for core-shell magnetic micropillars enabling simultaneously programmable and reprogrammable actuations using a simple magnetic field. The micropillars are composed of elastomeric hollow shells for shaping encapsulated with liquid magnetic nanocomposite resin cores for actuating. The spatial distribution of the magnetic nanoparticles inside the resin channels can be dynamically modulated within individual micropillars, which consequently regulates the magnetomechanical responses of the pillars upon actuation (bending deformation varied near 1 order of magnitude under the same actuation field). We demonstrate that the micropillars with contrasting bending responses can be configured in an arbitrary spatial pattern by direct magnetic writing, and the written pattern can then be easily magnetically erased to facilitate next-round rewriting and reconfiguration. This reprogrammable actuation capability of the micropillars is further demonstrated by their potential applications for rewritable paper and recyclable displays, where various microscale characteristics can be controlled to dynamically appear and disappear at the same or different locations of one single micropillar array. The core-shell magnetic micropillars reported here provide a universal prototype for reprogrammable responsive micro/nanostructures through rational design and facile fabrication from conventional materials.

Diabetes and its complications have become crucial public health challenges worldwide. In this study, we aim to develop a dissolving and glucose-responsive insulin-releasing microneedle (MN) patch system, for minimally invasive and glucose-responsive insulin delivery for type 1 diabetes therapy. The MNs were composed of dissolving and biodegradable gelatin and starch materials, which encapsulated glucose-responsive insulin-releasing gold nanocluster (AuNC) nanocarriers. The fabricated MNs had a complete and uniform structure, consisting of an array of 11 × 11 conical needles, with a needle height of 756 μm, a bottom diameter of 356 μm, a tip diameter of 10 μm, and a tip-to-tip distance of 591 μm. The encapsulated AuNC nanocarriers as additives in the MNs enhanced the mechanical strength of the MNs, and facilitated the penetration of the MNs into the skins of mice. Moreover, the AuNC nanocarrier drugs in the MNs enabled MN patches with a glucose-responsive insulin releasing behavior. With one transdermal application of MN patches on the dorsal skin of mice, the MN patches effectively regulated the BG levels of mice in normoglycemic ranges for 1 to 2 days, and effectively alleviated the diabetic symptoms in type 1 diabetic mice. This dissolving and glucose-responsive insulin-releasing MN patch system realized a closed-loop administration of insulin with minimal invasion, providing great potential applications for type 1 diabetes therapy.

Structural colors from photonic crystals (PCs) have attracted emerging attention in the research area of wearable sensors. Conventional self-assembly of PC takes days to weeks. Here, a fast self-assembly method of PC with horizontal precipitation of silica nanoparticles (NPs) in a polydimethylsiloxane fence, which can be completed within 1-4 h depending on the fence parameters, is introduced. The resultant PC exhibits tunable structural colors in the entire visible spectrum. With infiltration of composite hydrogels containing acrylic acid, acrylamide, chitosan, and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into the gaps of NPs to form an inverse opal PC, a structural color hydrogel that can quickly respond to different stimuli, including strain and temperature, is obtained. Moreover, with the addition of CNTs, the composite PC hydrogel can also output an electronic signal together with optical color changes. Based on these extraordinary responsive behaviors, the PC hydrogel sensor for quantitative feedback to external stimuli of stretching, bending, pressing, and thermal stimuli, with brilliant color change and electronic signal outputs simultaneously, is demonstrated. This fast-assembled PC hydrogel with excellent responsive properties has great potential for applications in wearable devices, mechanical sensors, temperature sensors, and colorimetric displays.

Cloud cavitation usually appears on impeller blades of hydraulic machinery. When unsteady cloud cavitation travels downstream to a high-pressure region and collapses, performance drops and cavitation erosion appears. It is important to develop effective methods to mitigate the undesirable effects. By million years of natural selection, bird feather has presented excellent flow performance. As typical characteristic structure of bird feather, a number of barbs are supported by a central hollow shaft. Under inspiration of bird feathers, we presented a method of passive cavitation control. This method of passive cavitation control uses biomimetic protuberant stripes (PSs) mounted on a NACA66 hydrofoil. The effects of various biomimetic PS arrangements on the cavitation pattern, pressure fluctuation, and hydrodynamic load are numerically studied. Then, the cavitation control mechanism of the biomimetic PS is analyzed in detail. We observe that the biomimetic PSs not only inhibit the shedding of large-scale cloud cavitation but also reduce the cavitation size. Moreover, analysis shows that turbulence velocity fluctuation may be mitigated and boundary layer thickness is reduced with biomimetic PSs, which enhances the flow intensity in the main flow direction.

This letter reports a novel approach for ultra-low stress die attachment for microelectromechanical system (MEMS) devices based on a stacked multilayer substrate. The substrate consists of stacked layers of alternating low and high coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) materials. The effective CTE of the substrate is determined by adjusting the thickness ratio of the stacked layers, hence, the CTE mismatch between the substrate and the MEMS devices can be tuned to minimize the packaging stress during die attachment. Simplified block structures are fabricated to verify the effectiveness of the reported approach. The measurement results agree well with the theoretical analysis, and the finite-element method (FEM) simulation. The maximum deflection of a packaged $3\times 5$ mm2 die is reduced to be lower than 10 nm using a quartz glass-alumina stacked layer substrate, which is approximately 30 times lower than that using a conventional alumina substrate. Moreover, the thermal behavior of the packaging chips utilizing this approach is measured in a temperature range of 25 °C to 150 °C. This work highlights an effective and simple way for the chip-scale package of MEMS devices with strict requirements for low packaging stress. [2021-0043]

This study investigated the antipathogenic activity and probiotic potential of indigenous lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from Chinese homemade pickles. In total, 27 samples were collected from different sites in China. Fifty-nine yielded pure colonies were identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing as LAB and were initially evaluated for the antibacterial activity in vitro. Initial screening yielded Lactobacillus plantarum GS083, GS086, and GS090, which showed a broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against food-borne pathogens, especially multidrug-resistant pathogens. Meanwhile, organic acids were mainly responsible for the antimicrobial activity of the LAB strains, and the most abundant of these was lactic acid (19.32 ± 0.95 to 24.79 ± 0.40 g/l). Additionally, three L. plantarum strains demonstrated several basic probiotic characteristics including cell surface hydrophobicity, autoaggregation, and survival under gastrointestinal (GI) tract conditions. The safety of these isolates was also evaluated based on their antibiotic susceptibility, hemolytic risk, bile salt hydrolase activity, and existence of virulence or antibiotic resistance genes. All strains were safe at both the genomic and phenotypic levels. Therefore, L. plantarum GS083, GS086, and GS090 are fairly promising probiotic candidates and may be favorable for use as preservatives in the food industry.

Responsive blood glucose control in a convenient and noninvasive manner is the ultimate goal in diabetes treatment. In this study, we developed a closed-loop microneedle (MN)-array patch for transdermal and responsive insulin delivery in type 1 diabetes therapy. We prepared alginate-based MN-array patches integrated with glucose-responsive gold nanoclusters (GNCs) using a two-step casting and centrifuging process. From both theoretical calculation and experimental study, we found that the integration of GNCs into MNs significantly improved the mechanical strength of alginate-based MN-array patches. The GNCs facilitated the MNs to penetrate the skin of mice, and the glucose-responsive GNCs in MNs allowed the closed-loop insulin release both in vitro in glucose solutions and in vivo in type 1 diabetic mice. With transdermal application only once on the skin of mice, the MN-array patches regulated the blood glucose levels of mice in normoglycemic ranges for up to 2.8 days and decreased the diabetic symptoms of the mice. Our study proved the successful application of glucose-responsive GNC-loaded MN-array patches for minimally invasive and responsive insulin delivery, providing a promising alternative for type 1 diabetes therapy.

Soft robots consisting of stimuli-responsive soft materials are expected to achieve tasks otherwise impossible by robots with conventional rigid counterparts. In spite of good progress made over the past several years, robot mobility on various surfaces remains challenging. Here, we report a footed soft robot with good terrain adaptability and large load carrying capability by mimicking the anisotropic friction of gecko setae and the gait of caterpillars. The robot, termed as Geca-Robot, is composed of gecko-inspired triangular micropillars as the feet and alternating cuboids of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and graphene–PDMS as the muscle. Geca-Robot is remotely powered by light with wavelengths ranging from ultraviolet to infrared, and moves with a caterpillar-like gait. The gecko-inspired feet allows Geca-Robot to unidirectionally travel on terrains of varying roughness, slope, and dryness with a wide working temperature range, and to carry loads weighing approximately 50 times its own mass. Geca-Robot will inspire the creation of further soft robot designs for various natural terrains.

Inspired by the nanoconcave top of epidermal cells on tree frogs' toe pads, an array of composite micropillars with nanopits on the surface (CPp) has been designed. Polystyrene (PS) nanoparticles are mixed with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and serve as the template for nanopits on the PS/PDMS composite micropillars. CPp shows much larger wet adhesion compared to the arrays of micropillars without nanopits. Under a certain loading force, most of the liquid between CPp and the counterpart surface is squeezed out, so the liquid that remained in nanopits forms multiple nanoscale liquid bridges within the contact area of a single micropillar. Moreover, a large loading force could squeeze part of the liquid out of nanopits, resulting in the suction effect during the pull-off. The multiple liquid bridges, the suction effect, and the solid direct contact thus contribute to strong wet adhesion, which could be ∼36.5 times that of tree frogs' toe pads. The results suggest the function of nanoconcaves on the toe pad of tree frogs and offer a new design strategy for structured adhesives to gain strong wet adhesion.

Water contained in organic solvents or products in chemical industries, as contaminants, poses an adverse risk in chemical reaction, life or environmental safety. However, conventional fluorescent water sensing suffers from drawbacks, including limited organic solvents, narrow linear range, lack of visual detection, single detection strategy, and others. Herein, a novel type of red-emitting carbon dots (RCDs) has been created via one-step solvothermal synthesis based on biomass (e.g., lignin) as the carbon source and p-phenylenediamine (PPD) as the nitrogen source. Colorimetric and fluorometric detection of water in organic solvents has been demonstrated. The RCDs showed excitation-independent photoluminescence (PL) in different solvents and solvatochromic behavior, red in water, orange in ethanol, yellow in N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF), and green in acetone. Remarkably, detection of water content in six organic solvents, including polar solvents (ethanol, acetone, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), tetrahydrofuran (THF), and DMF) and apolar solvent (ether), was performed. With increasing water content in solvents, emission colors changed from green to red, or yellow to red, offering qualitative sensing of water. Furthermore, a broad linear detection range (10-90%), low limits of detection (LOD) (e.g., 0.36% for ethanol and 0.082% for acetone), and good generality for various organic solvent systems were realized. Particularly, dual sensing strategies, including PL quenching and shift with water in various solvents, were achieved simultaneously, showing great potential for the development of advanced optical sensors with high performance.

Structured hydrophobic surfaces often suffer from Cassie-wetting failure due to trapped water in structure gaps for a long-term operation. Sustainable Cassie-wetting on such surface could be achieved by coating an atom-thick and moisture-impermeable graphene on it.Water contact angles were measured to clarify the effect of graphene on wetting, and water impermeability was verified by moisture deposition and evaporation. Sliding angle measurements and vapor condensation were carried out to demonstrate the stable Cassie-state wetting and application.Interestingly we found the graphene does not significantly disrupt the wetting behavior of the structured hydrophobic surface, showing a wettability transparency. Moreover, the impermeability of graphene keeps moisture away from the structure gaps. Owning to the combination of these two properties, droplets on the graphene-coated structured surface exhibit a stable Cassie-state hydrophobic wetting, even under the situation of moisture deposition and evaporation. Using the modified surface, we also found a 40-100% increase in condensation efficiency for a 5-hour vapor condensation at a subcooling of 40 °C. These results suggest an effective strategy to prevent Cassie-wetting failure of structured hydrophobic surface and are expected to promote its further application in more complex conditions.

The adhesion behaviors of droplets on surfaces are attracting increasing attention due to their various applications. Many bioinspired superhydrophobic surfaces with different adhesion states have been constructed in order to mimic the functions of natural surfaces such as a lotus leaf, a rose petal, butterfly wings, etc. In this review, we first present a brief introduction to the fundamental theories of the adhesion behaviors of droplets on various surfaces, including low adhesion, high adhesion and anisotropic adhesion states. Then, different techniques to characterize droplet adhesion on these surfaces, including the rotating disk technique, the atomic force microscope cantilever technique, and capillary sensor-based techniques, are described. Wetting behaviors, and the switching between different adhesion states on bioinspired surfaces, are also summarized and discussed. Subsequently, the diverse applications of bioinspired surfaces, including water collection, liquid transport, drag reduction, and oil/water separation, are discussed. Finally, the challenges of using liquid adhesion behaviors on various surfaces, and future applications of these surfaces, are discussed.

Anisotropic micro-nanocomposite topographies and biological cues can synergistically promote peripheral nerve regeneration., Anisotropic topographies and biological cues can simulate the regenerative microenvironment of nerve from physical and biological aspects, which show promising application in nerve regeneration. However, their synergetic influence on injured peripheral nerve is rarely reported. In the present study, we constructed a bionic microenvironment-inspired scaffold integrated with both anisotropic micro-nanocomposite topographies and IKVAV peptide. The results showed that both the topographies and peptide displayed good stability. The scaffolds could effectively induce the orientation growth of Schwann cells and up-regulate the genes and proteins relevant to myelination. Last, three signal pathways including the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, the extracellular signal–regulated kinase/mitogen-activated protein pathway, and the transforming growth factor–β pathway were put forward, revealing the main path of synergistic effects of anisotropic micro-nanocomposite topographies and biological cues on neuroregeneration. The present study may supply an important strategy for developing functional of artificial nerve implants.

Bio-inspired reversible adhesives have attracted great attention because of their promising applications in the electronic, biomedical, and robotic fields. Here, to achieve in situ reversible adhesion, a new concept is demonstrated by modulating the conformations of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) chains. The new adhesive, termed BGPP, is composed of the graphene/PDMS composite (GP) as the backing layer and PDMS as the micropillar array. The photothermal effect of graphene under UV irradiation heats up the micropillars, resulting in an increase in the chain conformations of PDMS and thus the contact points with the counterpart surface. The more contact points together with the alignment of PDMS chains during the shearing result in an adhesion much higher than that without UV irradiation. The adhesion switching thus does not rely on the changing of the contact area, and so the macroscopic deformation of structures is avoided. The results suggest a new design principle for light-controllable structured adhesive, which could be conceptualized into other rubbery materials.

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and graphene-PDMS nanocomposites (GP) have been widely studied because of their excellent properties, of which the elastic modulus is very important for various applications. Here, the dependence of the elastic modulus of properly cured PDMS and GP on the temperature has been investigated. For both PDMS and GP, a critical temperature (Tc) has been found, which originates from the strong affinity of PDMS chains to the PDMS network and graphene sheet, as suggested by molecular dynamics simulation. Graphene inhibits the cross-linking of PDMS close to its surface, which leads to the reduced elastic modulus of GP (EGP). Only when the temperature is above Tc, EGP increases with temperature. This is the result of the entropy elasticity of PDMS and the re-initiated cross-linking of PDMS. However, the elastic moduli of PDMS and GP are independent of the temperature below Tc. Here, the study provides a guideline for the preparation and using of PDMS and its composite at various temperatures.

A feasible, universal, and low-cost strategy for solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) was provided to significantly enhance the electroluminescent performances. The commercially available poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid) (PSSA) aqueous solution was mixed into poly(styrene sulfonic acid)-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiphene) (PEDOT:PSS) to modify its chemical and physical properties. The corresponding work function can be easily elevated from 5.04 to 5.63 eV. The modification of PEDOT:PSS by PSSA is found to be a universal method to demonstrate highly efficient OLEDs with different solution-processed host/emitter combinations, covering phosphorescent and thermally activated delayed fluorescence devices. Nature-inspired porous structures are highly desired in the fields of new materials, sustainable energy, biological and chemical science, and so forth. Here, a new strategy for the fabrication of continuous, gradient nanoporous polystyrene- block-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS- b-P2VP) film is established. The continuous nanopore gradient along the direction of film thickness (∼120 μm) is achieved via delayed directional diffusion of dynamic binary solvent of ethanol/water and selective swelling of P2VP domains. Ethanol in binary solvent diffuses into the film from one side to another, which is retarded by the water gate as water is concentrated at the film surface. The delayed diffusion matches the swelling rate of P2VP domains, forming the continuous nanopore gradient normal to the film surface.

The realization of high open-circuit voltage (Voc) in organic solar cells (OSCs) mainly depends on the delicate donor (D) and acceptor (A) structures, meticulously optimized bulk heterojunction (BHJ) microstructure and functionalized interfacial materials. In this work, we demonstrate a spontaneous Voc gain in efficient OSCs without sacrificing the short-circuit current (Jsc) and fill factor (FF). Using a combination of device studies and morphological analysis, we point out that the spontaneous phenomenon occurred at the bottom of the BHJ layer, which is caused by [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) acceptors spontaneously migrating to the BHJ/ZnO interface under ambient conditions. Furthermore, physical characterization determines the relation between morphology evolution and spontaneous Voc enhancement, which mainly results from the eliminated energetic disorder at the BHJ/ZnO interface. The investigation of surface energy parameters among selected components highlights the wetting coefficient as a dominant dynamic for this spontaneous phenomenon. Besides, a wide range of photovoltaic systems introduced for enabling parallel verification also confirm the effect of the interfacial surface energy on Voc spontaneous enhancement in inverted solar cells. These findings exemplify the importance of surface energy modification as a tool for improved interfaces of layered morphology, and open new routes to device interfacial optimization using novel design strategies of photoactive materials and interfacial materials. Such a spontaneous phenomenon may open a novel field for making materials work in an intelligent way in organic electronics.

Diabetes has become the third threat to public health worldwide. Traditional treatments of diabetes require frequent blood glucose testing and insulin injections, which not only bring great pain to patients but also exhibit difficulty in controlling the blood glucose accurately. In order to solve these problems, we developed a smart glucose-responsive insulin delivery system responding to the environmental glucose concentration based on gold nanoclusters (GNCs). First, we prepared GNCs as high drug-loading nanocarriers, and we decorated GNCs with phenylboronic acid molecules (4-carboxyphenylboronic acid (PBA) and 4-carboxy-3-fluorophenylboronic acid (FPBA)) as responsive ligands; then, we grafted insulin on the surface to form glucose-responsive insulin-release nanocomplexes GNC-PBA-Ins and GNC-FPBA-Ins, respectively. In the in vitro test, these complexes exhibited high sensitivity to glucose concentrations and rapidly released insulin in a hyperglycemic state. In type 1 diabetic mice in vivo, these complexes could maintain the blood glucose levels of mice in a normoglycemic range for up to 48 h without peaks of hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia, where the GNC-FPBA-Ins complex showed a better regulation of glucose than the GNC-PBA-Ins complex. These gold nanocluster systems mimic the function of the natural pancreas for blood glucose control, which has great potentials for the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes in the future.

Bioinspired structure adhesives have received increasing interest for many applications, such as climbing robots and medical devices. Inspired by the closely packed keratin nanopillars on the toe pads of tree frogs, tightly arranged polycaprolactone nanorod arrays are prepared by mold process and chemical modification. Nanorod arrays show enhanced adhesion and friction on both smooth and rough surfaces compared to the arrays with hexagonal micropillars. The bonding of nanorods results in a larger stiffness of the nanorod surface, contributing mainly to friction rather than adhesion. The results suggest the function of closely packed keratin nanopillars on the toe pad of tree frogs and offer a guiding principle for the designing of new structured adhesives with strong attaching abilities.
