Abstract

In recent decades, computer simulations have found increasingly widespread use as powerful tools of studying phase transitions in wide variety of systems. In the particular and very important case of aqueous systems, the commonly used force-fields tend to offer quite different predictions with respect to a wide range of thermodynamic and kinetic properties, including the ease of ice nucleation, the propensity to freeze at a vapor-liquid interface, and the existence of a liquid-liquid phase transition. It is thus of fundamental and practical interest to understand how different features of a given water model affect its thermodynamic and kinetic properties. In this work, we use the forward-flux sampling technique to study the crystallization kinetics of a family of modified Stillinger-Weber (SW) potentials with energy ($\epsilon$) and length ($\sigma$) scales taken from the monoatomic water (mW) model, but with different tetrahedrality parameters ($\lambda$). By increasing $\lambda$ from 21 to 24, we observe the nucleation rate increases by 48 orders of magnitude at a supercooling of ${\zeta}=T/T_m=0.845$. Using classical nucleation theory, we are able to demonstrate that this change can largely be accounted for by the increase in $|\Delta\mu|$, the thermodynamic driving force. We also perform rate calculations in freestanding thin films of the supercooled liquid, and observe a crossover from a surface-enhanced crystallization at $\lambda = 21$ to a bulk-dominated crystallization for $\lambda\ge22$., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, five tables

Abstract

The thermal transitions of confined LiCl aqueous solutions were studied by differential scanning calorimetry for solutions with salt concentrations with eutectic (R = 7) and subeutectic (R > 7) compositions (R = moles of water/moles of LiCl). The confinement media consist of mesoporous silica with pore diameters between 2 nm and 58 nm, with a small negative surface charge density. The vitrification of confined LiCl aqueous solutions was observed in all samples, expanding the vitrification region up to R = 15, and probably beyond for cooling rates of ≈1000 K/min. Ice crystallization was observed in some samples, except for those confined in the narrower pores. The onset and endpoint glass transition temperatures for the confined eutectic samples increase by 2 K and 5 K, respectively, for the smallest pore diameters (2 nm), which is equivalent to the effect of applying a pressure of up to 100 MPa to the bulk sample. This behavior is opposite of that reported for aqueous subeutectic NaCl solutions confined in silica glasses of similar sizes. We speculate that this is due to the fact that the mechanism of double confinement of the NaCl solution, between the pore wall and the precipitated ice, is not operative for LiCl solutions. Abstract

In this work we studied the effect of NaCl on the thermodynamic and dynamic properties of supercooled water, for salt concentrations between 0.19 and 1.33 mol kg-1, using molecular dynamic simulations for TIP5P/E water model and ion parameters specially designed to be used in combination with this potential. We studied the isobaric heat capacity (Cp) temperature dependence and observed a maximum in Cp, occurring at Tm, that moves to lower temperature values with increasing salt concentration. Many characteristic changes were observed at scaled temperature T/Tm ∼ 0.96, namely a minimum in the density of the system, a reduction of the slope of the number of hydrogen bonds vs. temperature, and a crossover from Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher to Arrhenius dynamics. Finally, at low temperatures we observed that water dynamics become heterogeneous with an apparently common relationship between the fraction of immobile molecules and T/Tm for all studied systems. Abstract

It is clear in Literature the effectiveness of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) vaccine in women when administered before first sexual intercourse whit reduced benefit in those who are already HPV positive. What remains to be clarified is whether the HPV vaccines have any impact on HPV infections and any benefit in women who have been previously treated for pre-invasive cervical disease. HPV vaccine is currently indicated as preventive tool for cervical cancer, cervical and vulvar dysplasia and also genital warts. So it is possible to assume that it could play a preventive role against clinical relapses of these diseases. The aim of our study is evaluate the feasibility of HPV quadrivalent vaccine in an Italian cohort of women under 45 years of age whit previous history of CIN and evaluate the effectiveness of HPV vaccine as a tool also to prevent recurrent disease.

Abstract

In a randomized, phase 3 study, superior complete/near-complete response (CR/nCR) rates and extended progression-free survival were demonstrated with bortezomib-thalidomide-dexamethasone (VTD) versus thalidomide-dexamethasone (TD) as induction therapy before, and consolidation after, double autologous stem cell transplantation for newly diagnosed myeloma patients (intention-to-treat analysis; VTD, n = 236; TD, n = 238). This per-protocol analysis (VTD, n = 160; TD, n = 161) specifically assessed the efficacy and safety of consolidation with VTD or TD. Before starting consolidation, CR/nCR rates were not significantly different in the VTD (63.1%) and TD arms (54.7%). After consolidation, CR (60.6% vs 46.6%) and CR/nCR (73.1% vs 60.9%) rates were significantly higher for VTD-treated versus TD-treated patients. VTD consolidation significantly increased CR and CR/nCR rates, but TD did not (McNemar test). With a median follow-up of 30.4 months from start of consolidation, 3-year progression-free survival was significantly longer for the VTD group (60% vs 48% for TD). Grade 2 or 3 peripheral neuropathy (8.1% vs 2.4%) was more frequent with VTD (grade 3, 0.6%) versus TD consolidation. The superior efficacy of VTD versus TD as induction was retained despite readministration as consolidation therapy after double autologous transplantation. VTD consolidation therapy significantly contributed to improved clinical outcomes observed for patients randomly assigned to the VTD arm of the study. Abstract

background The use of aspirin for the prevention of thrombotic complications in polycythemia vera is controversial. methods We enrolled 518 patients with polycythemia vera, no clear indication for aspirin treatment, and no contraindication to such treatment in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial to assess the safety and efficacy of prophylaxis with low-dose aspirin (100 mg daily). The two primary end points were the cumulative rate of nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes and the cumulative rate of nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, pulmonary embolism, major venous thrombosis, or death from cardiovascular causes. The mean duration of follow-up was about three years. results Treatment with aspirin, as compared with placebo, reduced the risk of the combined end point of nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes (relative risk, 0.41; 95 percent confidence interval, 0.15 to 1.15; P=0.09) and the risk of the combined end point of nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, pulmonary embolism, major venous thrombosis, or death from cardiovascular causes (relative risk, 0.40; 95 percent confidence interval, 0.18 to 0.91; P=0.03). Overall mortality and cardiovascular mortality were not reduced significantly. The incidence of major bleeding episodes was not significantly increased in the aspirin group (relative risk, 1.62; 95 percent confidence interval, 0.27 to 9.71). conclusions Low-dose aspirin can safely prevent thrombotic complications in patients with polycythemia vera who have no contraindications to such treatment.

Abstract

The possible prognostic value of the position of the breakpoint within the M-BCR in patients with Phl+ CML is still being debated. We analyzed the DNA rearrangements and the transcript types of 244 patients and tried to correlate the data obtained with prognostic features, defined according to Sokal's risk index, and with chronic phase and/or survival duration. The exact location of the breakpoint, either 5' or 3' to the Hind III restriction site within the M-BCR was identified. Moreover, the exact M-BCR subregion was also identified. As a whole, 150 pts were rearranged in the 5' part and 94 in the 3' part of the M-BCR. No correlation was observed between the site of rearrangement on the one hand and the Sokal's prognostic index and survival, on the other. Transcript analysis was performed in 130 patients; 59 carried an a2b2 and 69 an a2b3 pattern. Two patients carried both transcripts. Abstract

The diffusion of ferrocene methanolin supercooled glycerol–watermixtures has been measured over a wide viscosity range, which allowedanalyzing the composition dependence of the Stokes–Einsteinbreakdown (diffusion–viscosity decoupling). The observed decouplingexhibits a common behavior for all studied compositions (glycerolmass fractions between 0.7 and 0.9), determined by the reduced temperature(T/Tg) of the mixtures.This result differs from that reported previously for the diffusionof glycerol in its aqueous solutions, where the reduced temperaturefor the decoupling decreases with increasing water content. We concludethat the contradictory results are only apparent, and they can beexplained by the use of inconsistent extrapolated values of the viscosityof the glycerol–water mixtures in the supercooled region.
