8. Innovation adaptation in the UK water and wastewater industry: a case study of introducing DTA

Abstract

Others have asserted the need for wastewater quality guidelines that are environmentally relevant. Many companies within the UK may have to adapt their structure or function in response to the new, toxicity based consents that will be implemented by the Environment Agency in 1999. However, there has been little evidence from wastewater treatment research that UK industries are preparing for a change in effluent guidelines. Indeed, evidence suggests that some effluent dischargers have only a limited idea of what the introduction of toxicity-based consents could mean for them. This paper investigates the key factors identified by UK industrialists of importance to them in adapting to legislative change. The characteristic differences between those companies that consider themselves most at risk from the evolving legislation and those companies involved in the protection of the aquatic environment are presented to show how they may address the transition from chemical specific discharge consents to toxicity based consents as smoothly as possible. This deliverable is number 3 of 3 in Work Package 1 and presents the results of the assessment of UK waste arisings.The findings are drawn from a waste sampling regime carried out by Cranfield University across a number of physical waste collection sites, together with analysis of data from a number of sources. Abstract

This deliverable is number 2 of 3 in Work Package 1 and presents the initial results of waste sampling, including physical composition of waste materials and the detailed laboratory analysis.The report is intended to enable the reader to understand the main energetic waste flows over the initial 2 seasons of analysis of the project (November 2009 to January 2010 and February 2010 to May 2010). In all 4 seasons of sampling will be carried out.The information is based on the assessed sites only and at this stage only a preliminary attempt has been made to aggregate the derived results over the UK.The initial conclusions of the analysis undertaken for season 1 and 2 are presented in this report.

26. Improving bioaerosol exposure assessments of composting facilities — Comparative modelling of emissions from different compost ages and processing activities

Abstract

We present bioaerosol source term concentrations from passive and active composting sources and compare emissions from green waste compost aged 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 16 weeks. Results reveal that the age of compost has little effect on the bioaerosol concentrations emitted for passive windrow sources. However emissions from turning compost during the early stages may be higher than during the later stages of the composting process. The bioaerosol emissions from passive sources were in the range of 103–104 cfum−3, with releases from active sources typically 1-log higher. We propose improvements to current risk assessment methodologies by examining emission rates and the differences between two air dispersion models for the prediction of downwind bioaerosol concentrations at off-site points of exposure. The SCREEN3 model provides a more precautionary estimate of the source depletion curves of bioaerosol emissions in comparison to ADMS 3.3. The results from both models predict that bioaerosol concentrations decrease to below typical background concentrations before 250m, the distance at which the regulator in England and Wales may require a risk assessment to be completed.
