Abstract

Ultrasonic acoustic fields have recently been used to generate haptic effects on the human skin as well as to levitate small sub-wavelength size particles. Schlieren imaging and background-oriented schlieren techniques can be used for acoustic wave pattern and beam shape visualization. These techniques exploit variations in the refractive index of a propagation medium by applying refractive optics or cross-correlation algorithms of photographs of illuminated background patterns. Here both background-oriented and traditional schlieren systems are used to visualize the regions of the acoustic power involved in creating dynamic haptic sensations and dynamic levitation traps. We demonstrate for the first time the application of back-ground-oriented schlieren for imaging ultrasonic fields in air. We detail our imaging apparatus and present improved algorithms used to visualize these phenomena that we have produced using multiple phased arrays. Moreover, to improve imaging, we leverage an electronically controlled, high-output LED which is pulsed in synchrony with the ultrasonic carrier frequency., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Herein, the evolution of reduction process of ultrafine tungsten powder in industrial conditions was investigated. The transition process of morphology and composition was examined via SEM, XRD, and calcination experiments. The results show that the reduction sequence of WO2.9 was WO2.9 → WO2.72 → WO2 → W on the surface, but WO2.9 → WO2 → W inside the oxide particles. With the aid of chemical vapor transport of WOx(OH)y, surface morphology transformed into rod-like, star-shaped cracking, floret, irregularly fibrous structure, and finally, spherical tungsten particles.

Abstract

Hypersaline lakes in arid and semi-arid areas are unique ecosystems that harbour unique extremophile organisms such as Artemia , the paradigmatic example of adaptation to harsh living conditions. We assessed the mitogenomic biodiversity of Artemia species from the Tibetan Plateau, China, a remote and yet minimally disturbed ecosystem with a variety of hypersaline lakes. Analysis of ten Tibetan salt lakes demonstrated the occurrence of two regionally endemic species, Artemia tibetiana and Artemia sorgeloosi , with the latter being the dominant species with eight localities. Both species coexist in Jingyu and Jibu lakes, representing the first case of natural distribution overlap between sexual Artemia species. Artemia sorgeloosi exhibits higher genetic diversity and interpopulation differences, a result consistent with the heterogeneity of local salt lakes, local Artemia population demographics, and their adaptive potentials. Significant F ST values demonstrate a gene flow barrier between A. sorgeloosi populations that is compatible with an 'island biogeography' distribution pattern, making the Tibetan Plateau a sort of natural laboratory to study intraspecific population differences. Artemia sorgeloosi and the exotic Artemia franciscana were found coexisting in Yangnapen Lake, demonstrating the ability of this invasive species to colonize high-altitude inland habitats, and the need to monitor its presence and eventual expansion. While plant secondary metabolites have played integral roles in human health, food, and industry for thousands of years, still relatively little is known about the genetic mechanisms that generate their incredible diversity, nor their long-term effects on plant species colonization and persistence in harsh habitats. Yaupon holly (Ilex vomitoria) is a plant native to the coasts of the southeastern US whose leaves are used to brew a caffeine-containing infusion similar to tea. Its unique phytochemistry, wide adaptability, and observed variation in secondary metabolite profiles make it an excellent system to study how the production of plant secondary metabolites is shaped by adaptative evolution, but the underlying evolutionary history of this plant remains unknown, and its secondary chemistry has yet to be fully characterized. To address these gaps, we are constructing a living diversity panel comprised of ~300 live, wild yaupon holly plants self-collected from across the Southeast, each paired with genotyping-by-sequencing data. Using this genotype data, we aim to answer foundational questions about the evolutionary history of yaupon holly and probe the genome for evidence of recent adaptation in secondary metabolic processes. We also present preliminary data on the secondary metabolic composition of yaupon holly generated using LC-MS, both in green leaves and post-tea processing. Upon completion of these objectives, we hope to shed light on the forces that shape plant secondary metabolism at the level of communities and populations, as well as lay a foundation for future research in this organism.
