Efficient integral screening techniques are essential for the investigation of extended molecular structures. This work presents a critical assessment of well-established approximate screening techniques and extends them for integrals over London atomic orbitals, which are required in the presence of strong, external magnetic fields. Through the examination of helium clusters in such extreme environments, we demonstrate that seemingly straightforward extensions of field-free screening techniques as proposed in the recent literature can lead to significant errors. The C–H⋯S–S interactions are fundamentally important to understand the stability of biomacromolecules and their binding with small molecules, but they are still underappreciated. Herein, we characterized the C–H⋯S–S interactions in model molecular complexes. The rotational spectra of the complexes of diethyl disulfide with CH2CH2 and CH2CHF were measured and analyzed. All the detected structures are mainly stabilized by a C–H⋯S–S hydrogen bond, providing stabilization energies of 2.3–7.2 kJ mol−1. Incidental C–H⋯π or C–H⋯F interactions enhance the stabilization of the complexes. London dispersion, which accounts for 54%–68% of the total attractions, is the main driving force of stabilization. The provided bonding features of C–H⋯S–S are crucial for understanding the stabilizing role of this type of interaction in diverse processes such as supramolecular recognition, protein stability, and enzyme activity. We generalize a native Nb 2 O 5 dissolution model [G. Ciovati, Appl. Phys. Lett. 89, 022507 (2006)] to sequential overlayer dissolutions, multilayer dissolution, and realistic temperature profiles, which may be applicable to other materials. The model is applied to secondary ion mass spectrometry depth profile measurements for varying temperature profiles and two-step oxide dissolution in Nb and found to agree well. In the context of the Meissner screening response due to impurity profiles on the length scale of the London penetration depth, the shallow diffusion of O impurities results in a substantial decrease in the peak supercurrent density near the surface. In this framework, oxide dissolution and oxygen diffusion can account for a rise in peak supportable magnetic field in SRF cavities with baking time and a suppression after the optimal baking time is reached, in good agreement with peak-field baking temperatures and times as well as recent quench field measurements. The regularized and restored semi-local meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) exchange–correlation functional r2SCAN [Furness et al., J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 11, 8208–8215 (2020)] is used to create adiabatic-connection-derived global double-hybrid functionals employing spin-opposite-scaled MP2. The 0-DH, CIDH, QIDH, and 0–2 type double-hybrid functionals are assessed as a starting point for further modification. Variants with 50% and 69% Hartree–Fock exchange (HFX) are empirically optimized (Pr2SCAN50 and Pr2SCAN69), and the effect of MP2-regularization (κPr2SCAN50) and range-separated HFX (ωPr2SCAN50) is evaluated. All optimized functionals are combined with the state-of-the-art London dispersion corrections D4 and NL. The resulting functionals are assessed comprehensively for their performance on main-group and metal-organic thermochemistry on 90 different benchmark sets containing 25 800 data points. These include the extensive GMTKN55 database, additional sets for main-group chemistry, and multiple sets for transition-metal complexes, including the ROST61, the MOR41, and the MOBH35 sets. As the main target of this study is the development of a broadly applicable, robust functional with low empiricism, special focus is put on variants with moderate amounts of HFX (50%), which are compared to the so far successful PWPB95-D4 (50% HFX, 20% MP2 correlation) functional. The overall best variant, ωPr2SCAN50-D4, performs well on main-group and metal-organic thermochemistry, followed by Pr2SCAN69-D4 that offers a slight edge for metal-organic thermochemistry and by the low HFX global double-hybrid Pr2SCAN50-D4 that performs robustly across all tested sets. All four optimized functionals, Pr2SCAN69-D4, Pr2SCAN50-D4, κPr2SCAN50-D4, and ωPr2SCAN50-D4, outperform the PWPB95-D4 functional. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study employs Walter Benjamin's aura framework as a theoretical lens to look at religious consumption in virtual worlds, via a case study of the London megachurch Kingsway International Christian Centre. Findings suggest inter-personal authenticity contributes to authenticity in online religious consumption and emphasise the need to re-sacralise space and de-sanctify time to help congregant-audiences access sacred experiences. We also highlight the importance of re-mooring traditions and transformable rituals in replicating essential components of real-world worship gatherings through media and technologies. Proposing that the digital imbues its own aura, we develop the concept of 'digital aura', characterised by hypermediacy in media usage and remediation, which leads to the refashioning of certain practices and, ultimately, changes the way that audience members engage in ritual events. Recently, we formulated an effective scalar electrodynamics model of relativistic type-II superconductivity. We discussed possible electromagnetic behaviors of superconductivity along the lines of the nonrelativistic Ginzburg–Landau theory. This brief work considers a 2 D condensate subjected not only to a homogeneous magnetic field but also to a static radial electric field (polar coordinates). The electric field is regarded to have two components: a central constant field and a Coulomb-like field with "charge" g, where g can take only evenly spaced real numbers. We provide the single-vortex supercurrent density together with its associated magnetic flux density for the ground state of the system. Feasible extensions of this example in 3 D curvilinear geometries could explain some superconductivity phenomena which do not occur in planar 2 D geometries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ITER is of key importance in the European fusion roadmap as it aims to prove the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion as a future energy source. The EUROfusion consortium of labs within Europe is contributing to the preparation of ITER scientific exploitation and operation and aspires to exploit ITER outcomes in view of DEMO. The paper provides an overview of the major progress obtained recently, carried out in the frame of the new (initiated in 2021) EUROfusion work-package called ' Pr eparation of I TER O peration' (PrIO). The overview paper is directly supported by the eleven EUROfusion PrIO contributions given at the 29th Fusion Energy Conference (16–21 October 2023) London, UK [www.iaea.org/events/fec2023]. Formal regional planning structures were abolished in England in 2011. One response has been to call for their restitution, another has been to argue instead for negotiated strategic regional planning. The latter envisages the formation of partnerships in lieu of formal structures, with two key benefits being it is less vulnerable to government tinkering and is more attuned to economic and political actors. We employ a proxy – the UK Innovation Corridor – to look at the possibilities for negotiated strategic planning. This leads us to conclude that a hybrid model of formal and negotiated regional planning would offer a more robust model. Prior studies have examined various economic, environmental, and social impacts of the London congestion charge (LCC). However, few studies have investigated how the Transport for London (TfL) managed the LCC in all stages of its policy. Without active, strategic management of policies, stakeholders affected may doubt the policies' legitimacy and reduce policy effectiveness. Thus, examining the means utilized to achieve effective policy management is critical and can potentially influence the development and management of future policies. This study adapts Mitchell et al.'s stakeholder typology to study how the TfL, as part of the management of, and as the dominant stakeholder in, environmental regulations in London, strategically managed the LCC via their own efforts to exert power, establish legitimacy, and claim urgency. Relying on Yin, we analyze publicly available data to show how the TfL actively managed the LCC to ensure its sustainability as policy. The TfL primarily used tactics to maintain and enhance the LCC's legitimacy with authoritative power and fears of unproven urgency to influence other stakeholders. Results have practical implications for policymakers contemplating policy reforms and shed additional light on less‐discussed latent factors regarding policy management. This study contributes to the literature by applying stakeholder theory to the domain of policy reform, administration, and management. Our findings have policy implications as policymakers may benefit from learning the tactics examined in this study to assess their policy management and administration. The linear diblock copolymer polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-P4VP) is an important copolymer recently used in many applications such as optoelectronics, sensors, catalysis, membranes, energy conversion, energy storage devices, photolithography, and biomedical applications. (1) Background: The surface thermodynamic properties of PS-P4VP copolymers are of great importance in many chemical and industrial processes. (2) Methods: The inverse gas chromatography (IGC) at infinite dilution was used for the experimental determination of the retention volumes of organic solvents adsorbed on copolymer surfaces as a function of temperature. This led to the variations in the free energy of interaction necessary to the evaluation of the London dispersive and polar acid–base surface energies, the polar enthalpy and entropy, the Lewis acid–base constants, and the transition temperatures of the PS-P4VP copolymer. (3) Results: The application of the thermal Hamieh model led to an accurate determination of the London dispersive surface energy of the copolymer that showed non-linear variations versus the temperature, highlighting the presence of two transition temperatures. It was observed that the Lewis acid–base parameters of the copolymer strongly depend on the temperature, and the Lewis base constant of the solid surface was shown to be higher than its acid constant. The surface thermodynamic properties of polymers and copolymers modified by supramolecular structures are used in several industrial processes, such as selective adsorption, paints, coatings, colloids, and adhesion applications. Background: Inverse gas chromatography at infinite dilution was proved to be the best technique to determine the surface properties of solid surfaces by studying the adsorption of some model polar and non-polar organic molecules adsorbed on solid surfaces at different temperatures. Methods: The retention volume of adsorbed solvents is a valuable parameter that was used to obtain the London dispersive and polar free energies and the London dispersive surface energy of styrene–divinylbenzene copolymer modified by supramolecular structure of melamine using both the Hamieh thermal model and our new methodology consisting of the separation of the two polar molecules and the dispersive free energy of their interaction. This led to the determination of the polar acid and base surface energy, and the Lewis acid–base constants of the various solid materials. Results: Following our new methodology, all surface energetic properties of styrene–divinylbenzene copolymer modified by melamine at different percentages were determined as a function of temperature. Conclusions: It was observed that the styrene–divinylbenzene copolymer exhibited the highest London dispersive surface energy, which decreased when the melamine percentage increased. The role of the mosque has become increasingly vital, particularly in contemporary societies such as Britain, where both the place and status of religion in public life are constantly discussed and debated. Indeed, in the contemporary period, the role of the mosque has several dimensions, ranging from a social space, educational and cultural exchange, and community cohesion centre to a knowledge hub. In this context, this paper suggests that a mosque should be seen as an independent religious institution, although these are influenced by and responsive to governments, elites, pressure groups, public bodies, etc. Using a thematic analysis of news items in The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph over a period of two years (8 July 2005–7 July 2007), it finds that in the aftermath of 7/7, the mosque as a religious place and an institution for British Muslims is largely seen as incompatible and a threat to secular British society and that it is linked with radicalisation and terrorism. According to Quranic texts and revelations, it is indeed a fact that mosques are open to all. This is logical since God's mercy, love, and forgiveness are for all of mankind without any distinction, which is perhaps why the mosque has been the sacred house of God Himself. This study aims to reveal the development of visible hostility in some sections of the British media and political campaigns. Moreover, it intends to trace the determination and idea of the mosque as a religious place and an institution for British Muslims rather than only a place for worship. Finally, this study will argue the role of the mosque in promoting community cohesion and mutual understanding within the Muslim and other faith communities located in Britain. The article suggests distinguishing between illegality as a practical phenomenon and informal regulations as a structuring feature of everyday life. This allows rethinking the role of the law and regulation in contexts of urban informality, showing that the law, and formality more generally, is connected to the informal in that the formal only receives its meaning and relevance through the informal. Following a series of high-profile incidents of violence against women by serving London Metropolitan Police Officers, questions of standards and the public's confidence in policing are in the spotlight. Over a fifteen-month period between July 2022 and September 2023 using monthly surveys of representative English samples, this study confirms that women, in general, are more trusting in the police than men. This, however, does not hold true in London. Out of nine regions in England, London is the only region where women's overall trust in the police is lower than men. Lower levels of trust in the police among women in London hold when controls for age, income, political environment and crime levels are considered. In line with existing literature that considers women being more sensitive to cues about trustworthiness, the concerning incidents of sexual violence by police officers against women are likely to further erode trust in police in the capital, which already ranks last among England's nine regions in citizen trust of the police. Purpose: In order to determine whether the factors affecting office worker well-being are location dependent, this exploratory study analyses the relative importance of different "building well-being" factors for prime office workers in two leading but environmentally contrastive real estate markets: London and Hong Kong. Design/methodology/approach: This paper adopts a mixed methods sequential explanatory design (follow-up explanations model), consisting of three phases: an exploratory phase to refine the building well-being factors, a quantitative phase utilising a questionnaire to assess the relative importance of these building well-being factors (N = 281: London = 171; Hong Kong = 110), followed by a final phase of follow-up interviews with respondents to explore the reasons behind the significant differences observed in the quantitative phase (N = 13: London = 7; Hong Kong = 6). Findings: While London and Hong Kong share some highly-ranking factors in common, significant differences in importance are observed for 17 of the 31 identified factors as a result of contrasting physical, economic, and cultural environments. Originality/value: Despite growing recognition of the importance of the built environment on well-being, to the authors' knowledge there has been no previous research investigating how building well-being demands may vary systematically across geographies. Understanding these differences has important implications for interpreting building well-being research, effective business operations, real estate investment, building certification scheme design, and governance of the built environment. This article illustrates how historical cartographic sources can be analysed using a Geographical Information System to identify green spaces in London with a bombsite genesis in order to enhance the understanding of how the Blitz acted as a catalyst for greening the capital. It describes how temporary wartime green space creation and a desire to memorialise using parks and gardens gave way to ambitious plans to weave hundreds of acres of new green space into London’s urban fabric after the Second World War. The policies of London’s local government show how bomb-damaged land was specifically earmarked as the nuclei around which new green spaces could be assembled to address long-standing deficiencies in open space provision. The analysis of post-war green spaces in the present-day London Borough of Southwark using a Geographical Information System, alongside case studies of Leathermarket Gardens and Burgess Park, illustrates how digital mapping combined with archival research can reveal the processes and policies used by the municipal authorities to assemble new green spaces. We consider a gauge-invariant Ginzburg–Landau functional (also known as Abelian Yang–Mills–Higgs model), on Hermitian line bundles over closed Riemannian manifolds of dimension n ≥ 3 {n\geq 3} . Assuming a logarithmic energy bound in the coupling parameter, we study the asymptotic behaviour of critical points in the London limit. After a convenient choice of the gauge, we show compactness of finite-energy critical points in Sobolev norms. Moreover, thanks to a suitable monotonicity formula, we prove that the energy densities of critical points, rescaled by the logarithm of the coupling parameter, converge to the weight measure of a stationary, rectifiable varifold of codimension 2. The Commonwealth Prime Ministers' (subsequently Heads of Government) Meetings or Conferences were the flagship events of the New Commonwealth in the two decades after the Second World War and the beginning of formal independence and decolonisation in South Asia. The post-war Commonwealth leadership sought to maintain unity on key international issues, which served British strategic interests, at least in the view of British leaders, officials, and influential commentators. The collision of interests between the expansion of Commonwealth membership to include South Asian and, later, African states and the managed decolonisation of the British Empire produced conflicts and compromises that often shaped the progress of the Prime Ministers' Meetings. The New Commonwealth's functioning as an international forum can be better understood by developing insights gained from interdisciplinary methodologies to explore the central role of Jawaharlal Nehru's uses of space at the Commonwealth Prime Ministers' Meetings to highlight continuities that, ironically, facilitated the profound changes of this era. Taking seriously the multivalent meanings and historical complexity of the Britain and the World analytical framework, we show how British space increasingly came to be used to advance South Asian political goals. This article traces the response to the Elizabethan Poor Laws in two parishes in Jacobean London. The Elizabethan Poor Laws of 1598 and 1601 attempted to create a system of reliable poor relief in response to a series of late sixteenth‐century economic and population crises. The establishment of an organized system of almsgiving formally centered in the parish and its officers shifted the understanding of charity from a voluntary and interpersonal act to a more bureaucratic process. Focusing on the diverging accounts of charity by John Downham and William Gouge, this essay demonstrates how the bureaucratic logic of the Elizabethan Poor Laws was debated and challenged in print and from two of London's most influential pulpits. A little History of the Sikhs is a London-based initiative that explores traces of Sikh history found within the museums, memorials, parks, and streets of London. Through walking tours, they work to introduce their audiences to the shared history of the Sikhs and Britain and touch upon critical moments in the making of British Asian history, such as Partition. In this interview with the Migrant Memory and the Postcolonial Imagination project team, Rav Singh, founder of A little History of the Sikhs, will discuss the role of urban space in London in the preservation of cultural memory, reflect on participants' engagement with the tours and the significance of preserving and transmitting memories of empire, Partition, and migration in the diaspora. This article advances the historiography of port cities, waterfront trade unionism and imperial solidarity by comparing two distant places that, despite their colonial connections, are rarely juxtaposed: Britain and Australia. It investigates the relationship between the metropole and the periphery via the Great Dock Strike of 1889 in London (a 5-week dispute that ended in victory for the dockers) and the Australian Maritime Strike of 1890 (a 12-week strike that ended in defeat for the workers). This research shows how the responses to the strikes from the other side of the world reflected the characteristics of port cities and their waterfront workers. They were also largely determined by three neglected themes - the extent of colonial ties, the uses of the new telegraph network, and the impact of trade cycles - and how these themes influenced each other. The first theme develops and complicates Bernard Porter's argument that Britons were indifferent towards imperial affairs. On the one hand, this article confirms his position by showing the asymmetry of imperial relations between the outward-looking Australians and the mainly inward-looking Britons. On the other, it demonstrates how imperial connections led to solidarity, and how Britain's working-class leaders embodied an elitist imperial mindset. In doing so, this article draws new parallels between Britain's working-class leaders and colonial administrators. Despite their different roles and educational backgrounds, both groups - imbued with a sense of imperial superiority - demonstrated a similarly paternalistic approach in their work overseas. Therefore, imperial solidarity in port cities is a prism through which the prevalence and impact of the British imperial ethos - a far wider subject - can be illuminated and assessed.
