4. A self-adjoint arrival time operator inspired by measurement models

Abstract

We introduce an arrival time operator which is self-adjoint and, unlike previously proposed arrival time operators, has a close link to simple measurement models. Its spectrum leads to an arrival time distribution which is a variant of the Kijowski distribution (a re-ordering of the current) in the large momentum regime but is proportional to the kinetic energy density in the small momentum regime, in agreement with measurement models. A brief derivation of the latter distribution is given. We make some simple observations about the physical reasons for self-adjointness, or its absence, in arrival time operators and in the momentum operator on the half-line and we also compare our operator with the dwell time operator., Comment: 20 pages, Latex. Abstract

Environmental justice research driven by academics and policymakers often overlooks the valuable insights and leadership of the communities most impacted by environmental hazards. When institution‐led research approaches are employed, inadequate community ownership and limited institutional accountability hinder the effectiveness of environmental public health interventions. In contrast, a community‐owned and ‐managed approach to environmental justice research can guide community members in developing evidence‐based interventions. This paper outlines a community‐led environmental health assessment survey (sample = 100) and resulting community actions over 6 years (2017–2023) in a Northern California farmworker community with a perceived high prevalence of cancer and exposure to environmental hazards in households, neighborhoods, and job sites. Local resident experts in Knights Landing, CA, documented community risk factors and exposures in collaboration with interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate student‐researchers. The survey instrument focused on environmental hazards identified by local resident experts including vehicular and agricultural pollution, occupational pesticide contact, and sun exposure. Survey findings highlighted the need for targeted interventions to reduce environmental health risks, such as academic outreach programs, county investments in public services, and community‐led mutual aid initiatives. Despite academic reservations about our non‐random sampling method and data collection by local resident experts, our project sparked substantial actions and investments with minimal personnel and financial resources. Local leaders working with student‐researchers developed more effective environmental public health interventions through a community‐owned and ‐managed approach that went beyond the efforts of local regulatory and research institutions. Plain Language Summary: Agricultural communities in California experience environmental injustice related to toxic exposures in environmental, household, and occupational settings. Environmental justice movements seek to ensure a clean and healthy environment for all communities by mitigating these toxic exposures and amplifying community voices to remove social, economic, and political barriers to healthy environments. This research project started in 2016 when Knights Landing residents revealed their suspicions that environmental carcinogens were potentially causing a high prevalence of cancer in their neighborhood. The community leaders and university researchers partnered to conduct a community survey. The survey results were used by community leaders to establish the following action priorities: household pesticide exposure, addictive substance misuse, access to cancer screening, occupational safety, housing quality, and neighborhood isolation from health services. Feasible and prompt actions were implemented from 2017 to 2023 within the limited resources of this unincorporated community. Communities can initiate a swift, customized, representative environmental health assessment to serve as a starting point when seeking institutional support, funding, or larger research initiatives. Our approach may serve as a model for environmental justice researchers striving to promptly reduce environmental health risks in marginalized communities. Abstract

Media accounts routinely refer to California's Assembly Bill 32 (AB 32), the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, as "landmark" climate change legislation. On its surface, this label is an accurate reflection of the state's forward-thinking stance across many environmental issues including pesticides, toxic substances, solid waste, and air quality. For all its promise, however, AB 32 can also be considered a low point in the landscape of conflict between state environmental regulators and California's environmental justice movement. While the legislation included several provisions to address the procedural and distributive dimensions of environmental justice, the implementation of AB 32 has been marked by heated conflict. The most intense conflicts over AB 32 revolve around the primacy of market mechanisms such as "cap and trade." This article examines the drivers and the manifestations of these dynamics of collaboration and conflict between environmental justice advocates and state regulators, and pays particular attention to the scalar and racialized quality of the neoliberal discourse. The contentiousness of climate change politics in California offers scholars and practitioners around the world a cautionary tale of how the best intentions for integrating environmental justice principles into climate change policy do not necessarily translate into implementation and how underlying racialized fractures can upend collaboration between state and social movement actors. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

12. A Multilayer System and Optimization Framework for Team Dispatch Towards Service Recovery

Abstract

Diverse socioeconomic impacts from power outages in distribution networks are often caused by failures, and estimating their location frequently requires dispatching crews. However, in-field crews can reduce outage areas by network reconfiguration using manually controlled switches. In previous studies, a preset patrolling strategy disregarding the fact that several layers of information are interdependent led to suboptimal recovery of reliability indices, despite the fact that there was eventual service restoration. Thus, this article introduces a bi-level optimization method in which its upper level identifies the number and sequence of restoration stages through switching operations, and its lower level maps out the fastest crew routes from road networks. In addition, Monte Carlo simulations followed by Bayesian models were performed to identify limitations and put forward prepositioning suggestions for crews based on community detection. Their results show that the proposed method is well capable of coupling patrolling procedures with service recovery processes by merging diverse layers of information. Bayesian models were well capable of calculating tradeoffs for several manual recovery tactics, in addition to reflecting the impact of road network topics on power distribution reliability. Ultimately, the suggested method proved suitable to reduce reliability indices by merging several information layers, given that patrolling strategies were optimized and service was restored efficiently.

Abstract

Background Obesity and insulin resistance are positively correlated with plasma endothelin-1 (ET-1) levels; however, the mechanisms leading to increased ET-1 are not understood. Similarly, the full physiological complexity of ET-1 has yet to be described, especially in obesity. To date, one of the best treatments available for morbid obesity is bariatric surgery to quickly reduce body fat and the factors associated with obesity-related disease; however, the effects of vertical sleeve gastrectomy (SG) on plasma ET-1 have not been described. Objectives To determine if SG will reduce plasma ET-1 levels and to determine if plasma ET-1 concentration is associated with weight loss after surgery. Setting The studies were undertaken at a University Hospital. Methods This was tested by measuring plasma ET-1 levels from 12 obese patients before and after SG. All data were collected from clinic visits before SG, 6 weeks after SG, and 6 months after surgery. Results At 6 weeks after SG, plasma ET-1 levels increased by 24%; however, after 6 months, there was a 27% decrease compared with presurgery. Average weight loss in this cohort was 11.3% ± 2.4% body weight after 6 weeks and 21.4% ± 5.7% body weight after 6 months. Interestingly, we observed an inverse relationship between baseline plasma ET-1 and percent body weight loss (R2 = .49, P = .01) and change in body mass index 6 months (R2 = .45, P = .011) post bariatric surgery. Conclusions Our results indicate that SG reduces plasma ET-1 levels, a possible mechanism for improved metabolic risk in these patients. These data also suggest that ET-1 may serve as a predictor of weight loss after bariatric surgery.

Abstract

The risk of severe outcomes following respiratory tract infections is significantly increased in individuals over 60 years, especially in those with chronic medical conditions, i.e., hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dementia, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer. Down Syndrome (DS), the most prevalent intellectual disability, is caused by trisomy-21 in similar to 1:750 live births worldwide. Over the past few decades, a substantial body of evidence has accumulated, pointing at the occurrence of alterations, impairments, and subsequently dysfunction of the various components of the immune system in individuals with DS. This associates with increased vulnerability to respiratory tract infections in this population, such as the influenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), and bacterial pneumonias. To emphasize this link, here we comprehensively review the immunobiology of DS and its contribution to higher susceptibility to severe illness and mortality from respiratory tract infections.

Abstract

Background Obesity and insulin resistance are positively correlated with plasma endothelin-1 (ET-1) levels; however, the mechanisms leading to increased ET-1 are not understood. Similarly, the full physiological complexity of ET-1 has yet to be described, especially in obesity. To date, one of the best treatments available for morbid obesity is bariatric surgery to quickly reduce body fat and the factors associated with obesity-related disease; however, the effects of vertical sleeve gastrectomy (SG) on plasma ET-1 have not been described. Objectives To determine if SG will reduce plasma ET-1 levels and to determine if plasma ET-1 concentration is associated with weight loss after surgery. Setting The studies were undertaken at a University Hospital. Methods This was tested by measuring plasma ET-1 levels from 12 obese patients before and after SG. All data were collected from clinic visits before SG, 6 weeks after SG, and 6 months after surgery. Results At 6 weeks after SG, plasma ET-1 levels increased by 24%; however, after 6 months, there was a 27% decrease compared with presurgery. Average weight loss in this cohort was 11.3% ± 2.4% body weight after 6 weeks and 21.4% ± 5.7% body weight after 6 months. Interestingly, we observed an inverse relationship between baseline plasma ET-1 and percent body weight loss (R2 = .49, P = .01) and change in body mass index 6 months (R2 = .45, P = .011) post bariatric surgery. Conclusions Our results indicate that SG reduces plasma ET-1 levels, a possible mechanism for improved metabolic risk in these patients. These data also suggest that ET-1 may serve as a predictor of weight loss after bariatric surgery.

Abstract

ObjectivesThe Social Appearance Anxiety Scale (SAAS) is a 16-item measure that assesses social anxiety in situations where appearance is evaluated. The objective was to use optimal test assembly (OTA) methods to develop and validate a short-form SAAS based on objective and reproducible criteria.DesignThis study was a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from adults enrolled in the Scleroderma Patient-centered Intervention Network (SPIN) Cohort.SettingAdults in the SPIN Cohort in the present study were enrolled at 28 centres in Canada, the USA and the UK.ParticipantsThe SAAS was administered to 926 adults with scleroderma.Primary and secondary measuresThe SAAS, Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation II (BFNE II), Brief Satisfaction with Appearance Scale (Brief-SWAP), Patient Health Questionnaire-8 (PHQ8) and Social Interaction Anxiety Scale-6 (SIAS-6) were collected, as well as demographic characteristics.ResultsOTA methods identified a maximally informative shortened version for each possible form length between 1 and 15 items. The final shortened version was selected based on prespecified criteria for reliability, concurrent validity and statistically equivalent convergent validity with the BFNE II scale. A five-item short version was selected (SAAS-5). The SAAS-5 had a Cronbach’s α of 0.95 and had high concurrent validity with the full-length form (r=0.97). The correlation of the SAAS-5 with the BFNE II was 0.66, which was statistically equivalent to that of the full-length form. Furthermore, the correlation of the SAAS-5 with the two subscales of the Brief-SWAP, and the SIAS-6, were statistically equivalent to that of the full-length form.ConclusionsOTA was an efficient method for shortening the full-length SAAS to create the SAAS-5.

Abstract

Audit and feedback (A&F) is a commonly used quality improvement (QI) approach. A Cochrane review indicates that A&F is generally effective and leads to modest improvements in professional practice but with considerable variation in the observed effects. While we have some understanding of factors that enhance the effects of A&F, further research needs to explore when A&F is most likely to be effective and how to optimise it. To do this, we need to move away from two-arm trials of A&F compared with control in favour of head-to-head trials of different ways of providing A&F. This paper describes implementation laboratories involving collaborations between healthcare organisations providing A&F at scale, and researchers, to embed head-to-head trials into routine QI programmes. This can improve effectiveness while producing generalisable knowledge about how to optimise A&F. We also describe an international meta-laboratory that aims to maximise cross-laboratory learning and facilitate coordination of A&F research.

Abstract

An open workshop on 'Climatic Effects of Atmospheric Trace Constituents' was held in Vienna, Austria, on 19-20 August 1991 as part of the IUGG-IAMAP General Assembly. The objectives of the workshop were to review available information on spatial and temporal variations of atmospheric radiatively-chemically important trace constituents and their radiative properties, and discuss their chemical interactions and impact on climate. The workshop included six sessions: trace constituent distributions, spectroscopy and radiation models of the trace constituents, GCM climate studies, climate-chemistry interactions, research programs, and future research activities. Twenty-eight invited and contributed papers were presented and five papers were posted. A summary of the individual sessions is given below.
