Abstract

A deeper understanding of what factors influence metacognition has never become more pressing than in today's digital era, in which information flows constantly and quickly. To this end, the present study explored the role of culture in mediating how individuals experience metacognitive phenomena. For this purpose, the International Group on Metacognition (IGM) developed a rigorous standard international protocol to measure metacognition in Spanish-speaking university students (N = 1,461) in 12 cultures in Latin-America and Spain, employing both a subjective measure of metacognitive awareness (the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory [MAI]) and various metrics of objective metacognitive monitoring across three domains of learning--vocabulary, probabilities (mathematical reasoning), and paper folding (visual-spatial reasoning). Data were subsequently compared across the various cultures with subjective metacognitive awareness and the raw frequencies of the four mutually exclusive cells of the 2 × 2 performance/judgment array as outcomes. Results revealed significant differences regarding both macro-level components of subjective metacognitive awareness, knowledge and regulation of cognition. Further, significant and meaningful differences emerged for the raw frequencies of the four mutually exclusive cells as a function of culture, especially for vocabulary, in which differences among cultures emerged for all four cells. Implications for metacognitive research, theory, and practice are discussed.

Abstract

Objective: To establish the effect of the educational podcast production process on the development of communicaton skills and metacognitive processes in writing for a sample of secondary school students in 2021. Method: Some tasks from the Child Neuropsychological Evaluation (eni) were used as measurement instruments, including tasks for language, writing, and semantic and phonological verbal fluency. Additionally, the Evaluation of Metacognitive Processes in Writing (evapromes) questionnaire was applied. Results: The eni tasks showed an increase in most language and writing tasks, as well as a decrease in writing errors and written retrieval. Regarding metacognitive performance, a correlation was found between the educational podcast production processes and the indicators of oral and written expression evaluated. Conclusions: It was established that the educational podcast production process enhances oral and written expression. An educational podcast production learning intervention has a positive effect on the development of oral and written expression, especially for students aged 13 to 14. Finally, the script production process for educational podcasts promotes self-regulation in writing processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to examine metalinguistic skills and reading processes in children diagnosed with ADHD, compared to a matched control group. Method: An explanatory experimental design was employed, involving a sample of 194 children from Manizales, comprising 97 children diagnosed with ADHD and 97 controls. The study utilized tasks from the Children's Neuropsychological Assessment (CNA) protocol to assess metalinguistic and reading abilities. Results: Children with ADHD exhibited significantly lower performance across all metalinguistic and reading tasks compared to the control group, except for spelling and silent reading comprehension tasks. Conclusions: These findings corroborate previous research conducted in Manizales, underscoring the specific challenges in metalinguistic and reading domains among children with ADHD. Future research should explore the influence of working memory on phonological awareness and its implications for metalinguistic skills and reading development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The experimental study and transplantation of pancreatic islets requires their isolation from the surrounding tissue, and therefore, from the vasculature. Under these conditions, avascular islets rely on the diffusion of peripheral oxygen and nutrients to comply with the requirements of islet cells while responding to changes in body glucose. As a complement to the experimental work, computational models have been widely used to estimate how avascular islets would be affected by the hypoxic conditions found both in culture and transplant sites. However, previous models have been based on simplified representations of pancreatic islets which has limited the reach of the simulations performed. Aiming to contribute with a more realistic model of avascular human islets, in this work we used architectures of human islets reconstructed from experimental data to simulate the availability of oxygen for α, β and δ-cells, emulating culture and transplant conditions at different glucose concentrations. The modeling approach proposed allowed us to quantitatively estimate how the loss of cells due to severe hypoxia would impact interactions between islet cells, ultimately segregating the islet into disconnected subnetworks. According to the simulations performed, islet encapsulation, by reducing the oxygen available within the islets, could severely compromise cell viability. Moreover, our model suggests that even without encapsulation, only microislets composed of less than 100 cells would remain viable in oxygenation conditions found in transplant sites. Overall, in this article we delineate a novel modeling methodology to simulate detailed avascular islets in experimental and transplant conditions with potential applications in the field of islet encapsulation. Author summary: Pancreatic islets are clusters of cells dispersed throughout the pancreas that play a critical role for the regulation of blood glucose in the human body. Islets are mainly composed of α, β and δ-cells that respectively secrete glucagon, insulin and somatostatin in response to glucose changes. When islets are isolated, either to use them for transplantation for the treatment of type 1 diabetes or to study them experimentally, they are removed from the vasculature, thus limiting the oxygenation and nutrition of islet cells. Moreover, aiming to protect transplanted islets from the immune system, encapsulation of isolated islets is intensively explored. Under these conditions, isolated islets, either naked or encapsulated, rely entirely on the diffusion of oxygen and nutrients available in their surroundings until a new functional vasculature is developed. In this work, we use a detailed computational model of avascular islets based on reconstructed architectures of human islets to study how the availability of oxygen and glucose impacts the viability and connectivity of islet cells emulating experimental and transplant conditions. In this editorial of the monograph in Cognitive Sciences: Towards a Cross-cultural Perspective, a thematic review is presented, which accounts for the object of study, disciplines that underpin the interdisciplinary field of problems, and some current lines of research emerging in the field of study, among which four lines of work stand out. Firstly, studies linking cognitive or neurocognitive variables to the challenge of social diversity; secondly, studies examining the effect of cognition and neurophysiology on the formation of social stereotypes, gender; as well as on processes of discrimination or social and cultural inclusion; thirdly, works on the relationship between cognition and rurality; and finally, research that, from educational and social spheres, seeks to reconfigure the personal experience of social processes such as violence and territorial uprooting, towards new narratives of personal and social experience, which contribute to the sense of life of the individual and their community, as experiences that, although painful, can contribute to the relationship between memory and history. Abstract

Complete spinal cord injury causes an irreversible disruption in the central nervous system, leading to motor, sensory, and autonomic function loss, and a secondary injury that constitutes a physical barrier preventing tissue repair. Tissue engineering scaffolds are presented as a permissive platform for cell migration and the reconnection of spared tissue. Iodine-doped plasma pyrrole polymer (pPPy-I), a neuroprotective material, was applied to polylactic acid (PLA) fibers and implanted in a rat complete spinal cord transection injury model to evaluate whether the resulting composite implants provided structural and functional recovery, using magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, diffusion tensor imaging and tractography, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, locomotion analysis, histology, and immunofluorescence. In vivo, MR studies evidenced a tissue response to the implant, demonstrating that the fibrillar composite scaffold moderated the structural effects of secondary damage by providing mechanical stability to the lesion core, tissue reconstruction, and significant motor recovery. Histologic analyses demonstrated that the composite scaffold provided a permissive environment for cell attachment and neural tissue guidance over the fibers, reducing cyst formation. These results supply evidence that pPPy-I enhanced the properties of PLA fibrillar scaffolds as a promising treatment for spinal cord injury recovery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
