Cyber bullying has been widespread among youth during the last few decades, sometimes with deadly consequences. This type of violence remains too often out of adult's control since for many parents and teachers Internet and social media still represent an unknown territory. The objective of the current study is the analysis of the scope of parental involvement in children's online experience and their peer cyber bullying experience, and the analysis of connection between these two phenomena. Peer cyber bullying included: name calling, harassment, gossiping, identity-misrepresentation, sharing of private photos, videos and communication, social exclusion, stalking via SMS, e-mail, social media and other online communication platforms. The study included 249 middle school students (age 11-16 years, 50.6% female) in Pljevlja, Montenegro. The questionnaire was created for the current study purposes. The results showed that 63.1% students reported that their parents/care-givers talked to them about how to behave toward others when using Internet and 65.2% reported that their parents/care-givers monitor what they do online. Among study subjects there were 13.8% (N = 32) victims of cyber bullying. One third of them (34.4%, N = 11) reported victimization to their parent/caregivers. On the other side, 27.7% (N = 69) students reported that they knew a schoolmate who was cyber bullying the victim, and one quarter of them (24.6%, N = 17) reported schoolmate's victimization to their parents/ care-givers. Victimization was reported to the parents/care-givers significantly more by the students whose parents/care-givers talked to them how to behave toward others when using Internet [x2 = 12.626(1), p < 0.001], and significantly more by the students whose online activities were monitored by their parents/ care-givers [x2 = 6.145(1), p < 0.05] than by the students with whom parents did not have such activities. Several natural isolates of Bacillus strains namely 5B, 12B, 16B, 18 and 24B were grown on two different temperatures in submerged fermentation for the raw-starch-digesting a-amylases production. All strains except Bacillus sp. 18 produced more α-amylase on 37ºC. The hydrolysis of raw corn starch followed same pattern. Efficient hydrolysis was obtained with α-amylases from Bacillus sp. 5B, 12B, 16B and 24B grown on 37ºC and Bacillus sp. 18 grown on 50ºC. Zymography after isoelectric focusing shown that α-amylases were produced in multiple forms, from 2 to 6, depending on the strain when they were growing at 37 ºC, while growing at 50ºC induced only 1 or 2 isoforms. TLC analysis of hydrolysis products of raw corn and soluble starch by α-amylases revealed production of various mixtures of oligosaccharides. In most cases G3 was the most dominant product from soluble starch while G2, G3 and G5 were the main products of raw starch hydrolysis. This indicates that obtained a-amylases can be used for starch liquefying or short-chain-oligosaccharide forming, depending on what type of starch (raw or soluble) was used for the hydrolysis. Background: Individuals experiencing and perpetrating intimate partner violence (IPV) are frequently in contact with general health and mental health services. Health service providers, including nurses, thus have a key role in identifying and responding to initial indicators of IPV risk., Purpose: The present study provides descriptive information about current assessment and intervention practices of health and mental health service providers when patients are presenting with concerns about IPV., Methods: A secondary data analysis of interviews with general health practitioners (n = 17) were coded and dominant themes analyzed through thematic analysis., Results: The present study uncovered ways in which IPV-related risks are, and are not, recognized and responded to. A metaphorical visual display in the form of a "domestic violence supply room" depicts the level of access and degree of competency described by practitioners in respective areas of practice. Within reach for all practitioners is the knowledge of factors that increase risk and vulnerability to IPV. Out of reach is a comprehensive understanding of the needs of children and perpetrators as well as the consistent ability to consider intersectionality and be reflexive when working with culturally and linguistically diverse populations. The step ladder to improved IPV response, including formal supports such as training and procedures, is frequently described as lacking., Conclusions: A consistent and empirically supported approach to IPV assessment and response is rare to find across generalist service provision. Although service providers possess basic knowledge of risk factors, organizational direction is needed to allow providers to address IPV confidently and effectively.

Learners preferentially interpret novel nouns at the basic level ('dog') rather than at a more narrow level ('Labrador'). This 'basic-level bias' is mitigated by statistics: children and adults are more likely to interpret a novel noun at a more narrow label if they witness 'a suspicious coincidence' - the word applied to three exemplars of the same narrow category. Independent work has found that exemplar typicality influences learners' inferences and category learning. We bring these lines of work together to investigate whether the content (typicality) of a single exemplar affects the level of interpretation of words and whether an atypicality effect interacts with input statistics. Results demonstrate that both four- to five-year-olds and adults tend to assign a narrower interpretation to a word if it is exemplified by an atypical category member. This atypicality effect is roughly as strong as, and independent of, the suspicious coincidence effect, which is replicated.

Background: Croatia implemented individual donation (ID)-NAT testing of blood donors in 2013 for three viruses HBV, HCV, and HIV-1 as a mandatory test for all blood donors. This study assessed the impact of NAT screening 3 years after its implementation., Methods: A total of 545,463 donations were collected and screened for HBV, HCV, and HIV-1 using the Procleix Ultrio Plus Assay. All initially reactive (IR) NAT samples were retested in triplicate and, if repeatedly reactive (RR), NAT discriminatory assay (dNAT) was performed. ID-NAT positive donations were confirmed by RT-PCR on the COBAS AmpliPrep/TaqMan platform., Results: Out of 545,463 samples tested, 108 (0.02%) were RR in NAT. There were 82 (75,9%) HBV reactive, 16 (14.8%) HCV reactive, and 10 (9.3%) HIV-1 reactive samples. 51 (47.2%) samples were ID-NAT positive only. Out of these 51 NAT yield cases, 1 window period HIV-1 and 50 occult HBV infections (OBI) were determined. There were only two potential HBV DNA transmissions from OBI donors., Conclusion: The implementation of NAT screening for three viruses has improved blood safety in Croatia. During the 3-year period, 1 window period HIV-1 and a number of occult HBV donations were identified.

Yeast cell wall invertase (CWI) was modified with dimethyl suberimidate, glutaraldehyde, formaldehyde, and sodium periodate. Retained activity after modification was 45% for CWI modified with formaldehyde, 77% for CWI modified with sodium periodate, 80% for CWI modified with glutaraldehyde, and 115% for CWI modified with dimethyl suberimidate. Chemically modified and native CWIs showed significantly broad pH stability (pH 3-11), whereas after incubations at 50, 60, and 70 °C, CWI modified with glutaraldehyde showed the highest thermostability. Optimum pH for CWI modified with glutaraldehyde was between 4 and 5, whereas optimum temperature was at 60 °C. Comparison to CWI modified with glutaraldehyde after immobilization within alginate beads showed broader pH optimum (4.0-5.5) as well as broader temperature optimum (55-70 °C). Column bed reactor packed with the immobilized CWI modified with glutaraldehyde was successfully used for the 95% inversion of 60% (w/w) sucrose at the flow rate of 3 bed volumes per hour, pH 4.9, and 45 °C. A 1 month productivity of 3844 kg of inverted sugar/kg of the immobilisate was obtained.

Trypsin-like enzyme (TLE) from the anterior midgut of Morimus funereus larvae was purified by anion exchange chromatography and gel filtration chromatography and characterized. Specific TLE activity was increased 322-fold by purification of the crude midgut extract. The purified enzyme had a pH optimum of 9.0 (optimum pH range 8.5-9.5) and temperature optimum of 45 degrees C with the K(M) ratio of 0.065 mM for benzoyl-arginine-p-nitroanilide (BApNA). Among a number of inhibitors tested, the most efficient was benzamidine (K(I) value of 0.012 mM, Ic(50) value of 0.204 mM) while inhibition of TLE activity by SBTI, TLCK, and PMSF was partial. Almost all divalent cations tested enhanced the enzyme activity, amongst them Co2+ and Mn2+ stimulated TLE activity for 2.5 times. The purified TLE (after gel-filtration on Superose 12 column) had a molecular mass of 37.5 kDa with an isoelectric point over 9.3. Sodium dodecylsulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) revealed one band of 38 kDa, suggesting that the enzyme is a monomer.

In the Croatian transfusion medicine, no general agreement has yet been achieved whether red blood cell (RBC) Rhesus (Rh) antibodies detected during pregnancy only by enzyme tests can cause hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN). Results of the detection of clinically significant RBC antibodies by low-ionic-strength additive solution antiglobulin test (LISS-IAT) and trypsin enzyme test in 22,947 pregnant women are presented. All pregnant women in whom clinically significant RBC antibodies (RBC-CSA) were detected by LISS-IAT and/or enzyme tests were followed and observed during pregnancy. The women who had enzyme-only anti-D antibodies in their serum were followed up during subsequent pregnancies. Out of 302 positive results obtained by both techniques, irregular clinically significant enzyme-only antibodies (anti-RhD and anti-RhE specificity) were detected in 14 (4.6%) pregnant women. None of 11 RhD positive newborns whose mothers had enzyme-only anti-D antibodies, had signs of HDN after delivery. In these 11 women, anti-D antibodies were detected by LISS-IAT in the first trimenon of subsequent pregnancy. Nine infants born from subsequent pregnancies to women who had previously had enzyme-only anti-D, had clinical signs of HDN. The authors concluded that there is no need for enzyme tests in prenatal testing because enzyme tests are not reliable in the prediction of HDN.

During prenatal immunohaematological examination in the period from January 1, 1991 to December 31, 1995, in the Croatian Institute of Transfusion Medicine we tested sera of 5107 RhD negative women. All of them had pregnancies in their medical history. The frequency of Rh immunization was 4.6% in 1991; 4.1% in 1992; 2.5% in 1993; 2.5% in 1994 and 2.4% in 1995. Rh immunization during the first pregnancy was observed in 0.46% of women, in 1.8% during the second, in 9.4% during the third, in 22.4% during the fourth pregnancy, and 33.8% in women with more than five pregnancies. In women that have no abortions in their medical history, anti-D alloantibodies were found with the frequency of 0.46% at the end of the first pregnancy, 1.2% at the end of the second pregnancy, 5.9% at the end of the third pregnancy, 14.3% at the end of the fourth pregnancy, and 15.3% in women with more than five pregnancies. The frequency of anti-D alloantibodies in women who in their medical history have only abortions is 3.4% after the first abortion, 10.5% after the second, 17.8% after the third and 20.8% after the fourth or more abortions. The frequency of antibodies of anti-D specificities in women who had abortions and births is 17.1% at the end of the third pregnancy, 26.2% at the end of the fourth pregnancy, and 42.7% after more than five pregnancies. The frequency of anti-D alloantibodies in women who were protected from Rh immunization by hyperimmune anti-D globulin is 1%. The obtained results demonstrate that prevention of Rh immunization by hyperimmune anti-D globulin does not comprise all the Rh negative women, and is especially inadequate after abortions and multiple pregnancies.

The validity of a direct antiglobulin test (DAT) was evaluated by testing 7645 blood samples from hospitalized patients. DAT was routinely done in 7201 blood samples sent for pretransfusion testing and 444 blood samples specifically sent for the examination of immune hemolysis. Positive DAT was discovered in 0.04% (3/7201) pretransfusion samples and in 3.83% (17/444) samples examined for immune hemolysis. In 16 of the samples with positive DAT, IgG antibodies with or without complements and in 4 samples only components of complements were detected on RBC. The cost of positive DAT in pretransfusion testing is 92 times higher than that of DAT during laboratory investigation of immune hemolysis. Due to a low frequency of positive DAT during pretransfusion testing, its cast and the fact that patients had no clinical signs of immune hemolysis, we advocate no use of a routine DAT during pretransfusion testing.

A retrospective study was performed to estimate the rate of alloimmunization against red blood cell (RBC) antigens in hospitalized patients and the frequency and specificity of clinically significant alloantibodies (CSA) detected during routine pretransfusion testing of 10,641 blood samples. Clinically significant alloantibodies were found in 116 out of the 10,641 tested serums (1.09%). The incidence of CSA in two surgical groups of patients was 0.18% and 0.68%, respectively. In patients with hematologic diseases the frequency of CSA was 17.6%, in patients with uremic disease it was 14%, and in patients with cirrhosis hepatis it was 6.9%. The incidence of clinically significant alloantibodies in patients who had one to five exposures to RBC antigens was 5.1%; in patients who had six to fifteen exposures, 87.9%; and in patients with more than fifteen exposures, 6.8%. The most frequently found single alloantibodies were anti-Kell (22%), and the following irregular alloantibodies were found with decreasing frequency: anti-E (20%), anti-D (11%), anti-c (10%), anti-C (7%), anti-Kidd (6%). The most frequent alloantibodies found together with other alloantibodies had anti-Duffy specificity (80%), and the following irregular alloantibodies were found with decreased frequency: anti-C (70%), anti-c (57%), and anti-Kidd (50%).
