En esta publicación presentamos los primeros resultados obtenidos en la UNI, en la técnica de elaboración y caracterización de guías ópticas. Este trabajo se inició en el marco de un curso teórico experimental dictado por el Prof. Mauro Lomer en Agosto 98. Se presenta la teoría básica, los Métodos de elaboración empleados, el proceso de caracterización empleado y los resultados. In this paper, we show the first results obtained in the UNI, about the technology of elaboration and characterization of optical guides. This Work was initiated in August 98, in relation to a Workshop organized in our Lab by Prof Mauro Lomer. Abstract

This paper proposes the characterization of speckle patterns of multimode fibers in view of sensing applications and particularly for detection of vibration or seismic activity. We are interested in the response to vibration by using the cylindrical piezoelectric transducer (PZT). The PZT is modulated with a frequency generator by applying a sinusoidal signal in the range of 0 to 20 Hz, so the speckle patterns can be time averaged. In this work we report the results of the characterization of 3 types of multimode fibers, with core diameters of 50 μm, 240 μm and 980 μm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A method of measurement of arterial pulse based on changes speckle pattern generated in a multimode optical fiber. The extremely high sensitivity of the speckle pattern to external disturbance of the fiber capture the heart pulses when the arterial blood near the skin in contact with the fiber. The output signal of the fiber is recorded by a CCD camera in time and then processed. Experimental data for pulse rate and amplitude relative are provided using a plastic optical fiber of 1 mm diameter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Laser Induced breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is a useful technique to perform an accurate analysis of any kind of chemical composition. Usually, this kind of set-up is based on a system of lenses to acquire the plasma light and introduce it into the spectrometer. The alignment of the lenses system is a critical parameter in LIBS devices, because the plasma shape change with a big amount of different environmental conditions such as air pressure or laser energy. In this work, a sensor based on plastic optical fiber is proposed. This sensor does not need lenses, therefore avoids alignment problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Continuous patient monitoring has achieved high relevancy both in hospital and in residential environments. Previous works have presented a noncontact, robust and easy device for the monitorization of heart rate (HR) and respiration rate (RR) for patients lying in bed based on a specklegram induced in a Plastic Optical Fiber. This work present a comparative of different fiber optical cores diameter, which defines the speckle signal.
