Abstract

We report on the measurement of spin density matrix elements of the Λ(1520) in the photoproduction reaction γp → Λ(1520)K+, via its subsequent decay to K−p. The measurement was performed\ud as part of the GlueX experimental program in Hall D at Jefferson Lab using a linearly polarized\ud photon beam with Eγ = 8.2 GeV–8.8 GeV. These are the first such measurements in this photon\ud energy range. Results are presented in bins of momentum transfer squared, −(t − t0). We compare\ud the results with a Reggeon exchange model and determine that natural exchange amplitudes are\ud dominant in Λ(1520) photoproduction.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the π- photoproduction beam asymmetry for the reaction γp→π-Δ++ using data from the GlueX experiment in the photon beam energy range 8.2-8.8 GeV. The asymmetry ς is measured as a function of four-momentum transfer t to the Δ++ and compared to phenomenological models. We find that ς varies as a function of t: negative at smaller values and positive at higher values of |t|. The reaction can be described theoretically by t-channel particle exchange requiring pseudoscalar, vector, and tensor intermediaries. In particular, this reaction requires charge exchange, allowing us to probe pion exchange and the significance of higher-order corrections to one-pion exchange at low momentum transfer. Constraining production mechanisms of conventional mesons may aid in the search for and study of unconventional mesons. This is the first measurement of the process at this energy. © 2021 American Physical Society.

Abstract

We report measurements of the photon beam asymmetry ς for the reaction γ - p→K+ς0(1193) using the GlueX spectrometer in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. Data were collected by using a linearly polarized photon beam in the energy range of 8.2-8.8 GeV incident on a liquid hydrogen target. The beam asymmetry ς was measured as a function of the Mandelstam variable t, and a single value of ς was extracted for events produced in the u channel. These are the first exclusive measurements of the photon beam asymmetry ς for the reaction in this energy range. For the t channel, the measured beam asymmetry is close to unity over the t range studied, -t=(0.1-1.4)(GeV/c)2, with an average value of ς=1.00±0.05. This agrees with theoretical models that describe the reaction via the natural-parity exchange of the K∗(892) Regge trajectory. A value of ς=0.41±0.09 is obtained for the u channel integrated up to -u=2.0 (GeV/c)2. © 2020 American Physical Society.

Abstract

We report on the measurement of the γp→J/ψp cross section from Eγ=11.8 GeV down to the threshold at 8.2 GeV using a tagged photon beam with the GlueX experiment. We find that the total cross section falls toward the threshold less steeply than expected from two-gluon exchange models. The differential cross section dσ/dt has an exponential slope of 1.67±0.39 GeV-2 at 10.7 GeV average energy. The LHCb pentaquark candidates Pc+ can be produced in the s channel of this reaction. We see no evidence for them and set model-dependent upper limits on their branching fractions B(Pc+→J/ψp) and cross sections σ(γp→Pc+)×B(Pc+→J/ψp). © 2019 American Physical Society.

Abstract

We report on the measurement of the beam asymmetry ς for the reactions γ - p→pη and γ - p→pη′ from the GlueX experiment using an 8.2-8.8-GeV linearly polarized tagged photon beam incident on a liquid hydrogen target in Hall D at Jefferson Laboratory. These measurements are made as a function of momentum transfer -t with significantly higher statistical precision than our earlier η measurements and are the first measurements of η′ in this energy range. We compare the results to theoretical predictions based on t-channel quasiparticle exchange. We also compare the ratio of ςη to ςη′ to these models as this ratio is predicted to be sensitive to the amount of ss exchange in the production. We find that photoproduction of both η and η′ is dominated by natural parity exchange with little dependence on -t. © 2019 American Physical Society.

Abstract

The barrel calorimeter is part of the new spectrometer installed in Hall D at Jefferson Lab for the GlueX experiment. The calorimeter was installed in 2013, commissioned in 2014 and has been operating routinely since early 2015. The detector configuration, associated Monte Carlo simulations, calibration and operational performance are described herein. The calorimeter records the time and energy deposited by charged and neutral particles created by a multi-GeV photon beam. It is constructed as a lead and scintillating-fiber calorimeter and read out with 3840 large-area silicon photomultiplier arrays. Particles impinge on the detector over a wide range of angles, from normal incidence at 90 degrees down to 11.5 degrees, which defines a geometry that is fairly unique among calorimeters. The response of the calorimeter has been measured during a running experiment and performs as expected for electromagnetic showers below 2.5 GeV. We characterize the performance of the BCAL using the energy resolution integrated over typical angular distributions for π0 and η production of σE∕E=5.2%∕E(GeV)⊕3.6% and a timing resolution of σ=150 ps at 1 GeV. © 2018

Abstract

We report measurements of the photon beam asymmetry Sigma for the reactions (gamma) over right arrowp -> p pi(0) and gamma p -> p eta from the GLUEX experiment using a 9 GeV linearly polarized, tagged photon beam incident on a liquid hydrogen target in Jefferson Lab's Hall D. The asymmetries, measured as a function of the proton momentum transfer, possess greater precision than previous pi(0) measurements and are the first. measurements in this energy regime. The results are compared with theoretical predictions based on t-channel, quasiparticle exchange and constrain the axial-vector component of the neutral meson production mechanism in these models.

Abstract

Abstract

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab ran with its first commissioning beam in late 2014 and the spring of 2015. Data were collected on both plastic and liquid hydrogen targets, and much of the detector has been commissioned. All of the detector systems are now performing at or near design specifications and events are being fully reconstructed, including exclusive production of π0, η and ω mesons. Linearly-polarized photons were successfully produced through coherent bremsstrahlung and polarization transfer to the ρ has been observed.

Abstract

The relative gain of the photodetectors for the GlueX Barrel and Forward calorimeters will be monitored using modular LED driver systems. The BCAL system consists of a global controller that feeds power, bias voltage and trigger signals to 96 local controllers situated at the ends of the 48 BCAL modules, which drive 40 LEDs associated with the 40 light guides at the end of each module. The FCAL system consists also of a global controller, a local controller for each acrylic quadrant covering the face of the FCAL, and ten 4-LED pulser boards per local controller connected in a star configuration along the edges of the acrylic panes. The respective systems are currently being installed on the detectors and their tested performance is presented herein. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

A photon beam test of the 4 m long prototype lead/scintillating-fibre module for the GlueX electromagnetic barrel calorimeter was carried out in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility with the objective of measuring the energy and timing resolutions of the module as well as the number of photoelectrons generated. Data were collected over an energy range of 150-650 MeV at multiple positions and angles along the module. Details of the analysis at the centre of and perpendicular to the module are shown herein; the results are σE / E = 5.4 % / sqrt(E (GeV)) ⊕ 2.3 %, σΔ T / 2 = 70 / sqrt(E) ps, and 660 photoelectrons for 1 GeV at each end of the module. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

We measured angular distributions of differential cross section, beam analyzing power, and recoil polarization for neutral pion electroproduction at Q2=1.0(GeV/c)2 in 10 bins of 1.17≤W≤1.35 GeV across the Δ resonance. A total of 16 independent response functions were extracted, of which 12 were observed for the first time. Comparisons with recent model calculations show that response functions governed by real parts of interference products are determined relatively well near the physical mass, W=MΔ1.232 GeV, but the variation among models is large for response functions governed by imaginary parts, and for both types of response functions, the variation increases rapidly with W>MΔ. We performed a multipole analysis that adjusts suitable subsets of π≤2 amplitudes with higher partial waves constrained by baseline models. This analysis provides both real and imaginary parts. The fitted multipole amplitudes are nearly model independent-there is very little sensitivity to the choice of baseline model or truncation scheme. By contrast, truncation errors in the traditional Legendre analysis of N→Δ quadrupole ratios are not negligible. Parabolic fits to the W dependence around MΔ for the multiple analysis gives values for Re(S1+/M1+)=(-6.61±0. 18)% and Re(E1+/M1+)=(-2.87±0.19)% for the pπ0 channel at W=1.232 GeV and Q2=1.0(GeV/c)2 that are distinctly larger than those from the Legendre analysis of the same data. Similarly, the multipole analysis gives Re(S0+/M1+)=(+7.1±0.8)% at W=1.232 GeV, consistent with recent models, while the traditional Legendre analysis gives the opposite sign because its truncation errors are quite severe. © 2007 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

The ratio of the proton elastic electromagnetic form factors, $G_{Ep}/G_{Mp}$, was obtained by measuring $P_{t}$ and $P_{\ell}$, the transverse and longitudinal recoil proton polarization components, respectively, for the elastic $\vec e p \to e\vec p$ ~reaction in the four-momentum transfer squared range of 0.5 to 3.5 GeV$^2$. In the single-photon exchange approximation, the ratio $G_{Ep}/G_{Mp}$ is directly proportional to the ratio $P_t/P_{\ell}$. The simultaneous measurement of $P_{t}$ and $P_{\ell}$ in a polarimeter reduces systematic uncertainties. The results for the ratio $G_{Ep}/G_{Mp}$ show a systematic decrease with increasing $Q^2$, indicating for the first time a definite difference in the distribution of charge and magnetization in the proton. Abstract

We have made the first measurements of the virtual Compton scattering process via the e p -> e p gamma exclusive reaction at Q**2 = 1 GeV**2 in the nucleon resonance region. The cross section is obtained at center of mass (CM) backward angle, theta_gamma_gamma*, in a range of total (gamma* p) CM energy W from the proton mass up to W = 1.91 GeV. The data show resonant structures in the first and second resonance regions, and are well reproduced at higher W by the Bethe-Heitler+Born cross section, including t-channel pi0-exchange. At high W, our data, together with existing real photon data, show a striking Q**2 independence. Our measurement of the ratio of H(e,e'p)gamma to H(e,e'p)pi0 cross sections is presented and compared to model predictions., 6 pages, 5 figures, Bibtex format, to be submitted to Physical Review Letters includes cross section tables

Abstract

We report a Virtual Compton Scattering study of the proton at low CM energies. We have determined the structure functions $P_{LL}-P_{TT}/\epsilon$ and $P_{LT}$, and the electric and magnetic Generalized Polarizabilities (GPs) $\alpha_E(Q2)$ and $\beta_M(Q2)$ at momentum transfer Q2= 0.92 and 1.76 GeV2. The electric GP shows a strong fall-off with Q2, and its global behavior does not follow a simple dipole form. The magnetic GP shows a rise and then a fall-off; this can be interpreted as the dominance of a long-distance diamagnetic pion cloud at low Q2, compensated at higher Q2 by a paramagnetic contribution from $\pi N$ intermediate states., Comment: 4 pages, 2 Figs. Abstract

PHASE; International audience; Exclusive electroproduction of pi0 mesons on protons in the backward hemisphere has been studied at Q2=1.0 GeV2 by detecting protons in the forward direction in coincidence with scattered electrons from the 4 GeV electron beam in Jefferson Lab's Hall A. The data span the range of the total (gamma*p) center-of-mass energy W from the pion production threshold to W=2.0 GeV. The differential cross sections sigmaT+epsilonsigmaL, sigmaTL, and sigmaTT were separated from the azimuthal distribution and are presented together with the MAID and SAID parametrizations.

Abstract

A program in baryon spectroscopy and meson decays with the Crystal Ball Detector is underway at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. A vast amount of high-quality data are being obtained on the formation and decays of N*, , , and  resonances. Threshold  production patterns are very similar in -p and K-p interactions. Comprehensive 2 0 data are best described by sequential decays through intermediate resonances. Precision studies of eta-meson decays are setting stringent challenges to theoretical descriptions.

The present data are absolute differential cross sections at 150-350 MeV/c. A planned experiment will extend the measurements to even lower momenta.

Abstract

The differential cross section for electron-induced neutron knockout in the reaction 4He(e,e′n)3He has been measured for the first time with a statistical accuracy of 11%. The experiment was performed in quasielastic kinematics at a momentum transfer of 300 MeV/c and in the missing-momentum range of 25–70 MeV/c. The comparison of the data with theoretical calculations shows an impressive increase of the cross section resulting from final state interaction effects. Specifically , the p−n charge-exchange process dominates the cross section in this kinematical regime. (APS)

Recently the Crystal Ball Collaboration measured precise new data for the near-threshold reaction K(-)p--etaLambda, which is dominated by formation of the Lambda(1670)1 / 2(-). In this Letter, we present results of a unitary, multichannel analysis that incorporates the new Crystal Ball data. For our preferred fit, we obtain mass M = 1673+/-2 MeV, width Gamma = 23+/-6 MeV, and elasticity x = 0.37+/-0.07. This elasticity is significantly larger than previously recognized. Resonance parameters of our preferred fit are in striking agreement with the quark-model predictions of Koniuk and Isgur.

Abstract

We report on a measurement of the neutron detection efficiency in NaI crystals in the Crystal Ball (CB) detector obtained from a study of pi-p-->pi°n reactions at the Brookhaven National Laboratory AGS. A companion GEANT-based Monte Carlo study has been done to simulate these reactions in the CB, and a comparison with the data is provided.

Abstract

We present measurements of the differential and total cross sections and the polarization for the reaction K–p-->etaLambda from threshold to pK– = 770 MeV/c, with much better precision than previous measurements. Our cross-section data show a remarkable similarity to the SU(3) flavor-related pi–p-->^eta n cross-section results. The reaction K–p-->^etaLambda at threshold is dominated by formation of the intermediate Lambda (1670)1/2 – state.

Abstract

Cross sections for the He-3(e,e'pp)n reaction were measured over a wide range of energy and three-momentum transfer. At a momentum transfer q=375 MeV/c, data were taken at transferred energies omega ranging from 170 to 290 MeV. At omega = 220 MeV, measurements were performed at three q values (305, 375, and 445 MeV/c). The results are presented as a function of the neutron momentum in the final state, as a function of the energy and momentum transfer, and as a function of the relative momentum of the two-proton system. The data at neutron momenta below 100 MeV/c, obtained for two values of the momentum transfer at omega = 220 MeV, are well described by the results of continuum-Faddeev calculations. These calculations indicate that the cross section in this domain is dominated by direct two-proton emission induced by a one-body hadronic current. Cross section distributions determined as a function of the relative momentum of the two protons are fairly well reproduced by continuum-Faddeev calculations based on various realistic nucleon-nucleon potential models. At higher neutron momentum and at higher energy transfer, deviations between data and calculations are observed that may be due to contributions of isobar currents.

Abstract

The ratio of the proton's elastic electromagnetic form factors was obtained by measuring the transverse and longitudinal polarizations of recoiling protons from the elastic scattering of polarized electrons with unpolarized protons. The ratio of the electric to magnetic form factor is proportional to the ratio of the transverse to longitudinal recoil polarizations. The ratio was measured over a range of four-momentum transfer squared between 0.5 and 3.5 GeV-squared. Simultaneous measurement of transverse and longitudinal polarizations in a polarimeter provides good control of the systematic uncertainty. The results for the ratio of the proton's electric to magnetic form factors show a systematic decrease with increasing four momentum squared, indicating for the first time a marked difference in the spatial distribution of charge and magnetization currents in the proton.

Abstract

We report the first determination of the upper limit for the branching ratio of the CP forbidden decay η → 4π 0. No events were observed in a sample of 3.0×107 η decays. The experiment was performed with the Crystal Ball multiphoton spectrometer installed in a separated π -beam at the AGS (Alternating Gradient Synchrotron). At the 90% confidence limit, B(η → 4π 0)≤ 6.9×10-7.

Abstract

Preliminary results are presented for - and K- interacions on proton leading to neutral final states. Included are the production of 0, 20. 30, , , and K8. The data are used for the investigation of the production and decay of nucleon and hyperon resonances in the mass region up to 1700 MeV/c2. We have also measured 20 production on H, 12C, 27Al, and 64Cu targets by 750 and 408 MeV/c- mesons. The shape of the 20 invariant mass spectrum depends strongly of the target nucleus which is indicative of a major medium modification. Finally, we present new upper limits on C, Cp, and P forbidden -meson decays.

Abstract

Results are presented as a function of q and the final-state neutron momentum for slices in specific :kinematic variables. At low neutron momenta, comparison of the data to results of continuum Faddeev calculations performed with the Bonn-B nucleon-nucleon potential indicates a dominant role for two-proton knockout induced by a one-body hadronic current.

Abstract

An update of recent measurements of pion-nucleon charge-exchange scattering is presented. these consist primarily of cross sections at 150-660 MeV/c obtained with the Crystal Ball detector. They are the first results of a rich and diverse new experimental program in baryon spectroscopy at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The physics motives for making more accurate measurements of Pi^-p->Pi^0n in this region are to determine better the isospin-odd s-wave scattering length, to extrapolate scattering amplitudes to the non-physical region (e.g., for determinations of the PiN Sigma term), to evaluate the PiNN coupling constant and the mass splitting of the Delta resonance, to improve the determination of the mass, width and decay of the P_11(1440) resonance and to investigate isospin invariance and charge splitting of the P_33 scattering amplitude.

Abstract

The charged pion form factor, Fπ(Q2), is an important quantity that can be used to advance our knowledge of hadronic structure. However, the extraction of Fπ from data requires a model of the 1H(e,e'π+)n reaction and thus is inherently model dependent. Therefore, a detailed description of the extraction of the charged pion form factor from electroproduction data obtained recently at Jefferson Lab is presented, with particular focus given to the dominant uncertainties in this procedure. Results for Fπ are presented for Q2=0.60-2.45 GeV2. Above Q2=1.5 GeV2, the Fπ values are systematically below the monopole parametrization that describes the low Q2 data used to determine the pion charge radius. The pion form factor can be calculated in a wide variety of theoretical approaches, and the experimental results are compared to a number of calculations. This comparison is helpful in understanding the role of soft versus hard contributions to hadronic structure in the intermediate Q2 regime.
