Recently, digital transformation has caught much attention of both academics and practitioners. With the advent of digital technologies, small-and-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have obtained the capacity to initiate digital transformation initiatives in a similar fashion to large-sized organizations. The innate characteristics of digital technologies also favor SMEs in promoting initiation of digital transformation. However, the process digital transformation in SMEs remains a black box and the existing findings of digital transformation in SMEs are limited and remain fragmented. Considering the important contribution SMEs can offer to nations and economies; it is timely and relevant to conduct a profound analysis on digital transformation in SMEs. By conducting a thorough review of existing related literature in management, information systems, and business disciplines, this book chapter aims to understand both internal and external enablers of the digital transformation in SMEs.

In the contemporary age of information, organisations have realised the importance of data to innovate and thereby attain a competitive advantage. As a result, firms are more focused on understanding the potential to achieve data-driven innovation (DDI). Researchers too have focused on examining this novel phenomenon in a broader scope. In this study, we conducted a systematic and comprehensive review of the literature to understand the DDI phenomenon. The findings of this study benefit scholars in determining the gaps in the current body of knowledge as well as for practitioners to improve their data strategy to enhance and develop innovation capabilities.

With the advent of the Data Age, organisations are constantly under pressure to pay attention to the diffusion of data skills, data responsibilities, and management of accessibility to data analysis tools for the technical as well as non-technical employees. As such, in recent times, organisations are focusing on data governance and management strategies such as data democratization. Data democratization is an ongoing process of broadening data access to employees to find, access, self-analyse, and share data by removing data silos. By democratizing organisational data, organisations attempt to ensure that employees can speak the language of data and empower them to use data efficiently to improve their business functionalities. This paper aims to identify the critical success factors for data democratization through an in-depth review of the literature. Based on the findings of the analysis, nine critical success factors were identified as successors of the data democratization strategy.

Data democratization is an ongoing process that broadens access to data and facilitates employees to find, access, self-analyze, and share data without additional support. This data access management process enables organizations to make informed decisions, which in return enhances organizational performance. Technological advancements and extensive market pressure have mandated organizations to transform their traditional businesses into data-driven organizations, focusing on data democratization as a part of their data governance strategy. This paper explores the tenets of data democratization through an in-depth review of the literature. The analysis identified twelve attributes that enable data democratization based on the literature review. Future work will focus on testing and further empirically investigating these to develop a framework for the data democratization process to overcome the challenges.

The advancement and the proliferation of information systems among enterprises have given rise to understanding cybersecurity. Cybersecurity practices provide a set of techniques and procedures to protect the systems, networks, programs and data from attack, damage, or unauthorised access. Such cybersecurity practices vary and are applied differently to different types of enterprises. The purpose of this research is to compare the critical cybersecurity threats and practices in the cloud context among micro, small, and medium enterprises. By conducting a survey among 289 micro, small and medium-sized enterprises in Australia, this study highlights the significant differences in their cloud security practices. It also concludes that future studies that focus on cybersecurity issues and practices in the context of cloud computing should pay attention to these differences.

The Generation Z (Gen Z), or the digital natives have never experienced a life without the internet. In addition, the advancement of digital technologies such as social media, smart mobile technologies, cloud computing, and the Internet-of-things has transformed how individuals perform their day-to-day activities. Especially for Gen Z, the use of digital technology has become an essential part of their daily routine, as a result, challenging the norm. As such, Gen Z displays unique learning characteristics which are different from previous generations. This change opens new avenues for exploring the impact of digital technology on the learning characteristics of Gen Z and possible applications to the higher education environment. By conducting a literature review of 80 studies, this paper presents a comprehensive framework for understanding the influence of digital technologies on the learning characteristics of Gen Z in higher education.

The introduction of cloud computing has provided opportunities for small businesses to implement enterprise systems (ES) in their organizations and thereby improve their business processes. While there have been many studies focusing on ES implementation among medium-large sized firms, the factors that influence the implementations of ES in such firms are different to that of small firms. This teaching case discusses an implementation of a cloud enterprise resource planning (ERP) system in a small firm in the Asian region. The case illustrates factors that enabled successful implementation of a cloud ERP system in a small firm and the lessons learnt through this successful endeavor. The cost effectiveness, ease of learning, connectedness and in-depth analytical capabilities provided through cloud computing technologies, have provided small firms the opportunity to implement enterprise systems (ES), which was reserved only for the much resourceful firms. However, it is evident that small firms are still struggling to attain purported benefits of ES and still find it difficult to manage complexities of ES implementations. Further, limited research has been conducted that discusses ES implementation in small firms. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous small non-coding RNAs that play an important role in post-transcriptional gene regulation. However, the experimental determination of miRNA sequence and structure is both expensive and time-consuming. Therefore, computational and machine learning-based approaches have been adopted to predict novel microRNAs. With the involvement of data science and machine learning in biology, multiple research studies have been conducted to find microRNAs with different computational methods and different miRNA features. Multiple approaches are discussed in detail considering the learning algorithm/s used, features considered, dataset/s used and the criteria used in evaluations. This systematic review focuses on the machine learning methods developed for miRNA identification in plants. This will help researchers to gain a detailed idea about past studies and identify novel paths that solve drawbacks occurred in past studies. Our findings highlight the need for plant-specific computational methods for miRNA identification.

Radio astronomy commenced in earnest after World War II, with Australia keenly engaged through the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. At this juncture, Australia's Commonwealth Solar Observatory expanded its portfolio from primarily studying solar phenomena to conducting stellar and extragalactic research. Subsequently, in the 1950s and 1960s, astronomy gradually became taught and researched in Australian universities. However, most scientific publications from this era of growth and discovery have no country of affiliation in their header information, making it hard to find the Australian astronomy articles from this period. In 2014, we used the then-new Astrophysics Data System (ADS) tool Bumblebee to overcome this challenge and track down the Australian-led astronomy papers published during the quarter of a century after World War II, from 1945 until the lunar landing in 1969. This required knowledge of the research centres and facilities operating at the time, which are briefly summarised herein. Based on citation counts -- an objective, universally-used measure of scientific impact -- we report on the Australian astronomy articles which had the biggest impact. We have identified the top-ten most-cited papers, and thus also their area of research, from five consecutive time-intervals across that blossoming quarter-century of astronomy. Moreover, we have invested a substantial amount of time researching and providing a small tribute to each of the 62 scientists involved, including several trail-blazing women. Continuous changes in the technology and the business landscape place high strain on managing knowledge in organisations. Prior researchers highlight a positive connotation with knowledge management competence and organisational innovativeness in a turbulent environment. However, the rapid changes in the market and technology landscape may exert an additional pressure on the employees and such pressures may ultimately hinder organisational innovativeness. Drawing on knowledge management and innovation literature, this research conceptualises a model that investigates this tenacious relationship between knowledge management competence and innovativeness specifically in turbulent dynamic markets, considering information systems development (ISD)-outsourcing as the context. In March 2018, a series of anti-social and racial riots in Sri Lanka led to a government-controlled ban of all social media use in the country for 14 days. This nation-wide ban included the use of all social media such as Facebook, Twitter and communication apps like WhatsApp, Viber and WeChat. Until the day of the sanctions, a population of 23 million in Sri Lanka had never experienced government sanctions, restrictions or interventions on social media use. This sudden ban provided a unique window of opportunity to investigate social media non-use and use and how it might lead to psychological distress. Using a longitudinal study design of two surveys, analyzing data of 476 and 205 respectively, this study makes insightful preliminary observations of social media non-use and use continuum.

Today, technologies, devices and systems play a major role in our lives. Anecdotal commentary suggests that such technologies and our interactions with them create a false sense of perfectionism about life, events and its outcomes. While it is admirable to strive for better outcomes, constant and sometimes unrealistic expectations create a psychological condition commonly known as Perfectionism, the fear of not doing something right or the fear of not being good enough. In this paper, based on the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III), we conceptualize digital perfectionism as an emerging disorder, that is specific to our increasing interactions with tools and technologies. By using a sample of 336 individuals, this study makes valuable early insights on digital perfectionism, its conceptualization and its effects on the individuals.

Even though rural entrepreneurship and innovation has been studied for decades, the advent of social media, mobile, analytics, cloud computing and internet of things - also referred as digital technologies - (Nambisan 2013, Yoo et al. 2012) has provided new opportunities and challenges for this vast discipline. As a result, we see new business models, new processes, products and services offered using new digital technologies. Such changes challenge the orthodox view of IT entrepreneurship and innovation, opening new avenues for researches and challenges the existing theoretical understanding. This book chapter is an attempt to understand the existing literature on rural innovation and entrepreneurship in information systems discipline and identify opportunities for rural entrepreneurship and innovation in the digital era.

The advent of digital technologies such as social media, mobile, analytics, cloud computing and internet-of-things has provided unique opportunities for organizations to engage in innovations that are affordable, easy-to-use, easy-to-learn and easy-to-implement. Transformations through such technologies often have positive impacts on business processes, products and services. As such, organizations have managed to increase productivity and efficiency, reduce cycle time and make substantial gains through digital transformation. Such transformations have also been positively associated with reducing harmful environmental impacts by providing organizations alternative ways of undertaking their business activities. However, in recent times, especially with an abundance of technologies being available at near-zero costs, questions regarding the potential negative impacts of digital transformation on the environment have arisen. The morass of the ubiquitous technologies around us necessitates the continuing creation of large data centers, that are increasing their capacity yielding a negative impact on the environment. Considering this dialectical contradiction, a panel was conducted at the Australasian Conference on Information Systems (ACIS) in Perth, Australia, in 2019. Its aim was to invigorate the dialogue regarding the impact of digital transformation on environmental sustainability and suggested some directions for future research in this area.

Enterprise Systems purport to bring innovation to organizations. Yet, no past studies, neither from innovation nor from ES disciplines have merged their knowledge to understand how ES could facilitate lifecycle-wide innovation. Therefore, this study forms conceptual bridge between the two disciplines. In this research, we seek to understand how ES could facilitate innovation across its lifecycle phases. We associate classifications of innovation such as radical vs. incremental, administrative vs. technical innovation with the three phases of ES lifecycle. We introduce Continuous Restrained Innovation (CRI) as a new type of innovation specific to ES, considering restraints of technology, business processes and organization. Our empirical data collection at the implementation phase, using data from both the client and implementation partner, shows preliminary evidence of CRI. In addition, we state that both parties consider the implementation of ES as a radical innovation yet, are less interest in seeking further innovations through the system.

Enterprise Systems have been touted as a key driver of delivering benefits through innovation in corporate Information Systems. The advent of such systems expects to deliver best practices that improve organizational performance. Yet, most Enterprise System installations struggle to see lifecycle-wide value of it. Considering that Enterprise Systems deliver lifecycle-wide innovation; we observe organizational readiness for lifecycle-wide Enterprise Systems innovation. The A VICTORY apriori model compares contributions of eight constructs for organizational readiness for continuous Enterprise Systems innovation. The model is tested responses of both client and implementation partner. Results indicate that six of the eight constructs of readiness make significant contributions to organizational readiness for Enterprise Systems innovation.
