Investigation was carried out to identify restorers/maintainers with WA based CMS lines. Various inbred lines behaved differently in four CMS back grounds in respect of their maintainer/restorer reaction. Lines R-42, R-43, R-44, R-46, R-47, R-56, R-51, R-52, R-54, IR-64, IR-66, DRR-714, IR10198, IR 13419 and JGL 11118 identified as potential restorers at over the locations and these lines can be utilized for developing new potential hybrids. Fertility restoration studies indicated that restorer lines (R-43, R-44, R-52 and R-54) were governed by two independent dominant genes. A restorer with more than one independent gene is likely to produce the hybrids with higher fertility restoration and consequently increased yield. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Present investigation was carried out with 68 hybrids, 21 parents and 4 checks to study the association among yield components, their direct and indirect influence on grain yield. The characters plant viz. height, panicle length, productive tillers per plant, productivity per day and filled grains per panicle exhibited significant positive association with grain yield per plant, direct positive effect and indirect association themselves at both genotypic and phenotypic levels. Combining ability studies were conducted over locations and seasons on grin yield and yield contributing characters by utilizing line × tester analysis with four CMS (WA source) and well adapted seventeen elite diverse lines. The SCA variances were higher than GCA variances for majority of the characters over the seasons, revealed that preponderance of non-additive gene action. The estimates of gca effects showed that parents with high gca effects differed for various yield and yield components traits over the seasons and locations. IR-79156A, IR-68897 and tester R-51were performed well under different seasons and locations. Considering the yield and yield contributing traits promising general combiners for kharif R-47, R-48, R-49, R-52, R-56, IR-64 and IR-10198 and rabi R-42, IR-66, R-43, R- 46, R-56 and IR-13419. Based on per se performance, sca effects (High × High or High × Low gca effects of each cross) hybrids viz., DRR-14A × R-54, IR-80555A × R-48, IR-80555A × R-49, IR-80555A × R-51, IR-79156A × R-44 and IR-79156A × R-48 suitable for kharif season. Cross combinations viz., IR-80555A × R-47, IR-79156A × R-43, IR-79156A × IR-13419, IR-68897A × R-48, IR-68897A × R-51 and IR-68897A × R-52 identified as promising rabi for season. Twelve cytoplasmic male sterile lines belonging to four cytoplasmic male sterility (cms) sources were crossed with twelve inbreds to identify fertility restorer lines for each cms source. For the same source differing in line, the inbred behaved as either maintainer/restorer. Out of the twelve new inbred lines tested, fertility was restored in 9 inbreds for DRSF-114A (PEF), DRSF- 132A (PET-2) and DRSF-105A (PET-1), 11 inbreds for DRSF-116A (PEF) and DRSF-127A (CMSI), 4 inbreds for DRSF-115A (PEF), 5 inbreds for DRSF- 125A (CMSI) and DRSF-107A (PET-1), 6 inbreds for DRSF-124A (CMSI), DRSF-131A (PET-2) and 10 inbreds for DRSF-109A (PET-1). However, DRSF- 117A (PEF) was not restored by any of the inbreds tested. The study identified several effective restorers for newly developed cms sources for the first time in India, which can be exploited in developing highly heterotic hybrids possessing alternate cytoplasms.
