Abstract: This paper reports the characterization of ternary II–VI semiconductor nanocrystals, deposited by the electrochemical atomic layer epitaxy (ECALE) technique. In particular, morphological and structural properties of the ternary compounds of formula Cd x Zn1−x Se deposited on Ag (111) have been characterized as a function of composition. The number of the attainable x values is limited by the necessity of using well-defined ZnSe/CdSe deposition sequences. However, the quantitative analysis carried out on the basis of both electrochemical and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) experiments indicates that the ECALE method is a successful way of controlling the composition of Cd x Zn1−x Se. In addition, the electrochemical measurements show that the amount of deposition is minimum in correspondence to the compound with x =0.5, thus corroborating the hypothesis of a higher degree of disorder suggested both by morphological and structural investigation. The morphology was studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The structure of the films is estimated by EXAFS which is a powerful technique for the analysis of the local structure around chosen atoms. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

X-ray micro-computer aided tomography (μ-CT), together with optical microscopy and imaging, have been applied to the study of six moldavite samples. These techniques enabled a complete characterization to be made of the textural features of both Muong Nong-type and common splashform moldavites. A detailed study of the size and distribution of pores or bubbles confirmed the marked variability in pore size among the samples, as well as within each sample, and indicated in the Muong Nong-type moldavites the presence of at least two deformation stages which occurred before and after pore formation.

The design of a catalyst for one of the most important electrocatalytic reactions, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), was done following the most recent guidelines of theoretical studies on this topic. Aim of this work was to achieve a synergic effect of two different metals acting on different steps of the ORR. The catalytic activity of Ag, already known and characterized, was enhanced by the presence of a monolayer of cobalt subdivided into nanosized islands. To obtain such a controlled nanostructure, a novel method utilizing self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) as templates was employed. In a recent study, we were able to perform a confined electrodeposition of cobalt onto Ag(111) in a template formed by selectively desorbing a short-chain thiol (3-mercaptopropionic acid, MPA) from binary SAMs using 1-dodecanthiols (DDT). This method allows for an excellent control of the morphology of the deposit by varying the molar ratio of the two thiols. Because cobalt does not deposit on silver at an underpotential, the alternative approach of surface limited redox replacement (SLRR) was used. This method, recently developed by Adžić et al., consists of the use of a monolayer of a third metal, which can be deposited at an underpotential, as a template for the spontaneous deposition of a more noble metal. Herein, we choose zinc as template for the deposition of cobalt. Ag(111) crystals were covered by monolayer islands consisting of cobalt, with the surface atomic ratios ranging from 12 to 39% for cobalt. The catalytic activity of such samples towards ORR was evaluated and the best improvement in activity was found to be that of the sample with a cobalt percentage of approximately 30% with respect to the bare silver, which is in good agreement with theoretical hypotheses., (Copyright © 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Confined electrodeposition can be achieved through the use of suitable templates, by which the electrodeposition occurs in natural or artificial holes of an insulating layer on a conducting substrate. Here, we present the electrodeposition of CdS on the holes left by the selective desorption of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) from a binary self-assembled monolayer (SAM) formed on Ag(111) with 1-octanethiol (OT). The electrodeposition of a compound is quite demanding, since it requires the right stoichiometry. In addition, the surface underpotential deposition phenomena exploited by electrochemical atomic layer epitaxy (ECALE) technique ensures that the surface available for electrodeposition after the selective desorption is still Ag(111). Parallel electrochemical experiments show that the amount of compound electrodeposited is consistent with this free Ag(111) surface, and the morphological analysis performed both by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and by lateral force microscopy (LFM) confirm the electrochemical data.

Nanopatterned silver substrates with highly reproducible morphologies have been fabricated by micro-contact printing techniques and tested for SERS activity.

Morphology and electronic properties of CdS, CdSe, and the ternary compounds of formula CdSxSe(1-x) deposited on Ag(111) by ECALE have been characterized as a function of the composition. The number of the attainable x values is limited by the necessity of using well-defined CdS/CdSe deposition sequences. However, the quantitative analysis carried out by XPS and electrochemical stripping experiments indicates that the ECALE method has a good control on composition. The AFM images together with the electrochemical characterization indicate both two-dimensional and three-dimensional growth contributions. The photospectra recorded at CdS film electrodes in liquid junction with an alkaline (poly)sulfide electrolyte show good efficiency of photoconversion and band gap typical of the single crystal. Lower photoconversion efficiency and the presence of subband gap response are observed for CdSe; a possible reason is some crystalline disorder due to lower control of the layer-by-layer deposition in the case of Se. The dependence of band gap on composition of ternary CdSxSe(1-x) ECALE films is monotonic and in agreement with literature data reported for bulk materials.

The chlorite ion is an unavoidable by-product of the disinfection of drinking water by means of chlorine dioxide. The maximum concentration values of chlorite accepted in many countries' regulations range from 0.2 to 1.0 mg L(-1). A simple, inexpensive and quickly set up voltammetric procedure for the on-site determination of chlorite in drinking water networks is described. This procedure is suitable for the whole range of applications in drinking water plants. A useful cell for on-field analysis has been developed. Surface morphology and behaviour of carbon-based working electrodes have been investigated by voltammetry and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Actual samples of different types of water networks have been analysed for chlorite concentration.
