Abstract

One Health, a multidisciplinary approach to public health, which integrates human, animal, and environmental studies, is prudent for circumpolar Arctic health research. The objective of our bibliometric review was to identify and compare research in select infectious diseases in Arctic wildlife species with importance to human health indexed in English language databases (PubMed, Scopus) and the Russian database eLibrary.ru. Included articles (in English and Russian languages) needed to meet the following criteria: (1) data comes from the Arctic, (2) articles report original research or surveillance reports, (3) articles were published between 1990 and 2018, and (4) research relates to naturally occurring infections. Of the included articles (total n = 352), most were from Russia (n = 131, 37%), Norway (n = 58, 16%), Canada (n = 39, 11%), and Alaska (n = 39, 11%). Frequently reported infectious agents among selected mammals were Trichinella spp. (n = 39), Brucella spp. (n = 25), rabies virus (n = 11), Echinococcus spp. (n = 10), and Francisella tularensis (n = 9). There were 25 articles on anthrax in eLibrary.ru, while there were none in the other two databases. We identified future directions where opportunities for further research, collaboration, systematic reviews, or monitoring programs are possible and needed.

Abstract

It has been found that ultrasonic treatment of diamond nanopowders contributes to surface cleaning due to the removal of non-diamond carbon and impurities from the surface boundary of nanodiamond grains (from 0.4 and 0.32 % for ASUD-99 and 0.67 and 0.55 % for ASUD 75, respectively). It does not affect the total sorption volume and the values of the specific surface of the studied samples do not change, but it changes the composition of groups on the surface of diamond nanoparticles, which affect its hydrophilicity. In the samples of АSUD-75 after ultrasonic treatment, a redistribution of the ratio of the intensities of valence vibrations of С=О bonds in the lactone (anhydride) group (1742 cm–1) and the quinone (carboxyl) group (1683 cm–1) is observed, which indicates the decay of the lactone ring and its transformation into carbonyl and carboxyl groups. All samples of АSUD-99 have a hydroxyl group O-H (3400 cm−1 ), which does not change significantly under the influence of ultrasound. 44. The First Report on Elaphostrongylus rangiferi(Reindeer Invasive Parasite) in Leningrad Oblast

Abstract

Abstract: Elaphostrongylus rangiferiis a parasitic nematode specific to reindeer (Rangifer tarandus). In the 20th century, reindeer could not be found in Leningrad oblast. However, several dozen of them were brought from Murmansk oblast and the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug by 2020 and introduced in at least seven private menageries. As a result of studying feces of 34 imported reindeers carried out in 2018–2021, nematode larvae were isolated, whose morphological, morphometric, physiological and biological characteristics corresponded to those of E. rangiferi. Species identification was confirmed by subsequent molecular genetic studies. The discovery of larvae in the feces of second generation reindeer (born in 2018–2020) indicated the successful completion of the full life cycle by the helminth, which requires the participation of intermediate hosts such as terrestrial or freshwater gastropods. The following facts, including (1) the occurrence of reindeer infested with E. rangiferiin Leningrad oblast; (2) the presence of wild, agricultural, and zoo-kept ruminants capable of becoming definitive hosts for Elaphostrongylusin Leningrad oblast; (3) the spread of parasite larvae as a result of reindeers roaming freely in the forest, their lease and resale, and commercial sale of non-disinfected manure; (4) the ability of larvae to stay viable in feces and infected mollusks for about 2 years, withstanding freezing and drying; (5) high lethality among infected nonspecific hosts due to parasitic encephalomyelitis, pneumonia, etc.; and (6) the lack of treatment methods, all put ruminants of Leningrad oblast at risk.

Absence gene and cytotoxicity of this complexes is shown. It serves as argument in favor of safety of their application.
