Abstract

Social work academic Melody Mtezuka died in November 1995. She was a black woman born in Johannesburg, South Africa, who settled in Britain in 1969. She is best known for her work on race and racism and for the warmth and determination of her personality. In the early 1970's she became Principal Social Worker in child guidance in Manchester, England, where she is remembered for her clear, determined leadership and her encouragement of independence in her staff. In 1986 she moved to Manchester University's School of Social Work where she enhanced the course with her work on ethnic communities.

Abstract

An enantioselective synthesis of the squalene synthase inhibitor, alpha-phosphono sulfonate triacid 1, was conducted. Deuterium incorporation investigations were performed first to determine the configurational stability of the chiral centers. Results indicated that both the triacid 1 and diester 2 were isolable as single enantiomers, whereas triester 3 was very sensitive to racemization. The method for the introduction of the asymmetric center was based on the sulfuration or alkylation of a chiral phosphorus carbanion.

Adoption policy and practice is currently under scrutiny and its future shape in England and Wales is about to be announced by the government. A recent SSI inspection of adoption services which found large numbers of children waiting for families resulted in adoption services being slammed as 'unacceptable and in a crisis' (Browne 2000). As a consequence, there is a clear determination to bring adoption back into the mainstream of children's services; it is estimated that 1000 more children in care could benefit from adoption (Collier 2000).
