Heat stroke is a serious condition that might lead from moderate organ impairment to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. Appropriate diagnosis-finding, fast initiation of cooling and intensive care are key measures of the initial treatment. Scientific case report based on i) clinical experiences obtained in the clinical management of a particularly rare case and ii) selected references from the medical scientific literature.

While landscapes are broadly sculpted by tectonics and climate, on a catchment scale, sediment size can regulate hillslope denudation rates and thereby influence the location of topographic highs and valleys. In this work, we used in situ 10Be cosmogenic radionuclide analysis to measure the denudation rates of bedrock, boulders, and soil in three granitic landscapes with different climates in Chile. We hypothesize that bedrock and boulders affect differential denudation by denuding more slowly than the surrounding soil; the null hypothesis is that no difference exists between soil and boulder or bedrock denudation rates. To evaluate denudation rates, we present a simple model that assesses differential denudation of boulders and the surrounding soil by evaluating boulder protrusion height against a two-stage erosion model and measured 10Be concentrations of boulder tops. We found that hillslope bedrock and boulders consistently denude more slowly than soil in two out of three of our field sites, which have a humid and a semi-arid climate: denudation rates range from ∼5 to 15 m Myr−1 for bedrock and boulders and from ∼8 to 20 m Myr−1 for soil. Furthermore, across a bedrock ridge at the humid site, denudation rates increase with increasing fracture density. At our lower-sloping field sites, boulders and bedrock appear to be similarly immobile based on similar 10Be concentrations. However, in the site with a Mediterranean climate, steeper slopes allow for higher denudation rates for both soil and boulders (∼40–140 m Myr−1), while the bedrock denudation rate remains low (∼22 m Myr−1). Our findings suggest that unfractured bedrock patches and large hillslope boulders affect landscape morphology by inducing differential denudation in lower-sloping landscapes. When occurring long enough, such differential denudation should lead to topographic highs and lows controlled by bedrock exposure and hillslope sediment size, which are both a function of fracture density. We further examined our field sites for fracture control on landscape morphology by comparing fracture, fault, and stream orientations, with the hypothesis that bedrock fracturing leaves bedrock more susceptible to denudation. Similar orientations of fractures, faults, and streams further support the idea that tectonically induced bedrock fracturing guides fluvial incision and accelerates denudation by reducing hillslope sediment size.

Despite the high abundance of Aquificae in many geothermal systems, these bacteria are difficult to culture and no viruses infecting members of this phylum have been isolated. Here, we describe the complete, circular dsDNA Uncultivated Virus Genome (UViG) of Thermocrinis Octopus Spring virus (TOSV), derived from metagenomic data, along with eight related UViGs representing three additional viral species. Despite low overall similarity among viruses from different hot springs, the genomes shared a high degree of synteny, and encoded numerous genes for nucleotide metabolism, including a PolA-type DNA polymerase polyprotein with likely accessory functions, a DNA Pol III sliding clamp, a thymidylate kinase, a DNA gyrase, a helicase, and a DNA methylase. Also present were conserved genes predicted to code for phage capsid, large and small subunits of terminase, portal protein, holin, and lytic transglycosylase, all consistent with a distant relatedness to cultivated Caudovirales. These viruses are predicted to infect Aquificae, as multiple CRISPR spacers matching the viral genomes were identified within the genomes and metagenomic contigs from these bacteria. Based on the predicted atypical bi-directional replication strategy, low sequence similarity to known viral genomes, and unique position in gene-sharing networks, we propose a new putative genus, "Pyrovirus," in the order Caudovirales.

Properties of fragmentation from an explosively driven 316L stainless steel spherical shell section fabricated by a laser powder bed additive manufacturing process with minimal surface finishing are investigated. This shell is driven by an insensitive high explosive, resulting in high strain rate deformation (>8 × 103 s−1) and failure of the stainless steel. Photonic Doppler velocimetry measures the expansion rate; dynamic radiography and high-speed imaging capture the fracture behavior of the stainless steel. The fracture response of the additively manufactured stainless steel shell is compared to published experimental results on additively manufactured 316L stainless steel and conventionally manufactured wrought 316L and 304 stainless steel shell fragmentation. Despite preferred crack orientation, suggesting the influence of surface grooves on fracture time, fragment size is identical to that measured in a similar experiment on wrought 304 stainless steel. Further analysis indicates that the 316L additively manufactured stainless steel shell exhibits comparable spall strength and fragmentation toughness to conventionally manufactured stainless steel yet lower failure strain due to surface stress concentrations. Fusarium wilt is a plant disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum that generates significant economic loss to crops. A method to sustainably control F. oxysporum is utilizing biological agents, such as endophytic bacteria. Therefore, this study aimed to isolate endophytic bacteria from tomato plant tissue, which could inhibit the pathogen of wilt disease (F. oxysporum). Endophytic bacteria were isolated from local tomato plants in Muna Regency, Indonesia. Morphological characteristics such as size, shape, color and height of bacterial colonies were then determined by Gram staining using potassium hydroxide (KOH). Endophytic bacterial isolates were evaluated for their ability to inhibit F. oxysporum through inhibition and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) production tests. Subsequently, analysis of variance was used to determine whether endophytic bacteria inhibited F. oxysporum growth, and if there was a significant effect, Duncan's test was conducted at 95% significance. HCN production was observed through qualitative methods. The results showed that four endophytic bacteria isolates, namely LBR I A03, SWR II B04, SDM II B05 and SWR I A02 inhibited the growth of F. oxysporum by more than 50%. It also revealed that four endophytic bacterial isolates were strong HCN producers and two were weak producers. Therefore, isolates showing antifungal activity in this study can be used as biopesticide agents to induce plant resistance to F. oxysporum.

Girls on Ice Austria, an organization that encourages young women to stretch themselves through wilderness and glacier travel, camping, science and art, successfully completed their inaugural expedition in August 2021. Nine girls from Austria, Germany and Italy joined science instructors specializing in glaciology and meteorology, two professional artists (an actress and a painter), and a professional mountain guide for an all-female, week-long expedition to Bachfallferner glacier in the Ötztal. The team learned basic mountaineering and climbing skills, conducted scientific experiments including measuring the daily melt rate of Bachfallferner glacier, and pushed their creative boundaries. The all-female nature of Girls on Ice, and Inspiring Girls Expeditions (the umbrella organization) is meant to show young girls that women are capable of successfully filling traditionally male roles (such as in glaciology and mountaineering), to introduce the next generation of girls to the world of mountains and glaciers, and to encourage them to bravely and confidently pursue these career paths.

The government prioritizes health as one of the areas in which it seeks to boost the country's growth, but the referral system in place has failed to deliver high-quality health care. The purpose of this study was to assess and empirically demonstrate the extent to which the health referral system has been implemented in Kendari Health Center and Bau-Bau City. The study was held in the Kendari City Health Center and the Bau-Bau City Health Center, and it lasted from February 2020 to February 2021. This research method is a qualitative approach based on postpositivism's theory, in which the researcher is the primary instrument, triangulation is used to collect data, inductive data analysis is used to analyze data, and qualitative research results emphasize meaning rather than generalization. Informants in this study amounted to 15 informants. Qualitative data were analyzed using the NVIVO 12 QSR application. The research findings indicate that there is a conceptual link between the health system and the concept of implementing a referral system. This research emphasizes to the health service center the importance of increasing the knowledge of health workers through training for both doctors and advocacy for policymakers regarding the improvement of health facilities.

Funded by the National Science Foundation, Polar-ICE partnered with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute’s EARTH program to offer a collaborative workshop for educators and polar scientists to develop lesson plans that integrate polar data into the classroom curriculum. In this article, we share one of the many lessons created in this workshop.

Bordetella pertussis is a highly contagious pathogen which causes whooping cough in humans. A major pathophysiology of infection is the extrusion of ciliated cells and subsequent disruption of the respiratory mucosa. Tracheal cytotoxin (TCT) is the only virulence factor produced by B. pertussis that has been able to recapitulate this pathology in animal models. This pathophysiology is well characterized in a hamster tracheal model, but human data are lacking due to scarcity of donor material. We assessed the impact of TCT and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on the functional integrity of the human airway mucosa by using in vitro airway mucosa models developed by co-culturing human tracheobronchial epithelial cells and human tracheobronchial fibroblasts on porcine small intestinal submucosa scaffold under airlift conditions. TCT and LPS either alone and in combination induced blebbing and necrosis of the ciliated epithelia. TCT and LPS induced loss of ciliated epithelial cells and hyper-mucus production which interfered with mucociliary clearance. In addition, the toxins had a disruptive effect on the tight junction organization, significantly reduced transepithelial electrical resistance and increased FITC-Dextran permeability after toxin incubation. In summary, the results indicate that TCT collaborates with LPS to induce the disruption of the human airway mucosa as reported for the hamster tracheal model.

BackgroundThe entity assignment of salivary gland tumors (SGT) based on histomorphology can be challenging. Raman spectroscopy has been applied to analyze differences in the molecular composition of tissues. The aim of this study was to evaluate the suitability of RS for entity assignment in SGT.MethodsRaman data were collected in deparaffinized sections of pleomorphic adenomas (PA) and adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACC). Multivariate data and chemometric analysis were completed using the Unscrambler software.ResultsThe Raman spectra detected in ACC samples were mostly assigned to nucleic acids, lipids, and amides. In a principal component-based linear discriminant analysis (LDA) 18 of 20 tumor samples were classified correctly.ConclusionIn this proof of concept study, we show that a reliable SGT diagnosis based on LDA algorithm appears possible, despite variations in the entity-specific mean spectra. However, a standardized workflow for tissue sample preparation, measurement setup, and chemometric algorithms is essential to get reliable results.

Objective: The results of the self-assessment assessment at the Lalolae Public Health Center which was the target of the 2017–2019 accreditation assessment in East Kolaka Regency showed that most of the low scores were in the administration and management group. This study aims to determine the relations between the readiness of accreditation documents in the Administration and Management Working Group on the accreditation results of the Lalolae Public Health Center in East Kolaka Regency. Methods: This type of research is quantitative using a cross sectional design. The number of samples in this study were all people in charge of the administrative and management working group at the Lalolae Public Health Center who were determined by the purposive sampling method. This research was carried out from May 1 to July 20, 2020 and took place at the Lalolae Health Center. The sample in this study is 30 respondents. Results: There are 3 documents in chapter I that have unfulfilled categories, there are 4 documents in chapter ii that have unfulfilled categories, and there are 4 documents in chapter III that have unfulfilled categories. Conclusion: There is a relation between the readiness of accreditation documents in the administration and management groups to the results of accreditation of Public Health Center.
