The Multicenter Orthopaedic Outcomes Network (MOON) study of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction has achieved >80% follow-up for study subjects who were enrolled from 2002 to 2005; patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were reported at 2, 6, and 10 years through a carefully designed protocol that included surgeon involvement to encourage subjects to complete and return questionnaires. The process included emails and telephone calls from the central coordinating center, from research coordinators at each local institution, and lastly, from the subjects' surgeons for those who were less inclined to complete the follow-up. In order to quantify the effect of site and surgeon involvement, the enrollment year of 2005 was monitored for the 10-year follow-up (n = 516 subjects). In contact efforts made by the coordinating center, 73.8% (381) of study subjects were reached by the central site coordinator, contact information was verified, and questionnaires were subsequently sent, completed, and returned. An additional 54 subjects (10.5% of the overall study population) returned the questionnaire after local study site involvement, indicating the importance of individual surgeon and local site involvement to improve follow-up rates in multicenter studies in orthopaedic surgery. Follow-up rates were higher when a specific individual (the surgeon or the research coordinator) was given the task of final follow-up.

Distance education enables students to encounter others who are socially and culturally heterogeneous beyond the boundaries of the traditional classroom space. However, the advantages of distance education have not been fully utilized in the past. Based on this awareness of the problem, the "Local Study to Encourage Wide Area Communication" in Higashihiroshima City was implemented. In this study, we examine how the children received the cross-border distance education. Specifically, we analyzed the questionnaires of the children (2,288 students in the 3rd and 4th grades) who participated in the study. Considering the results, the following three points were derived. (1) Distance education enables children to focus on and observe through a screen what they cannot see and hear in their daily lives. (2) Distance education enables children to create new knowledge through discussions with children who do not usually interact with each other. (3) Distance education enables children to learn about towns that they do not usually visit., 広島大学大学院人間社会科学研究科からは「令和3年度研究科裁量経費・東広島市連携・広域交流型オンライン社会科地域学習支援事業」を交付いただいた。

The International workshop on Integrated Assessment of CONtaminants impacts on the North sea (ICON) provided a framework to validate the application of chemical and biological assessment thresholds (BACs and EACs) in the Seine Bay in France. Bioassays (oyster larval anomalies, Corophium arenarium toxicity assay and DR Calux) for sediment and biomarkers: ethoxyresorufin- O -deethylase (EROD) activity, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, lysosomal membrane stability (LMS), DNA strand breaks using the Comet assay, DNA adducts, micronucleus (MN), PAH metabolites, imposex, intersex and fish external pathologies were analysed in four marine sentinel species ( Platichthys flesus , Limanda limanda, Mytilus sp. and Nucella lapilus ). Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and heavy metals were analysed in biota and sediment. Results for sediment and four species in 2008–2009 made it possible to quantify the impact of contaminants using thresholds (Environmental Assessment Criteria/EAC 2008 : 70% and EAC 2009 : 60%) and effects (EAC 2008 : 50% and EAC 2009 : 40%) in the Seine estuary. The Seine estuary is ranked among Europe's most highly polluted sites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Let f be a holomorphic self-map of the unit ball in dimension 2, which does not have an interior fixed point. Suppose that f has a Wolff point p with the boundary dilatation coefficient equal to 1 and the non-tangential differential dfp = id. The local behaviours of f near p are quite diverse, and we give a detailed study in many typical cases. As a byproduct, we give a dynamical interpretation of the Burns–Krantz rigidity theorem. Note also that similar results hold on two-dimensional contractible smoothly bounded strongly pseudoconvex domains.

The Atlantic sector of the Basque Country is characterised by a particular settlement pattern known as baserria, consisting of dispersed, individual farmsteads with autonomous landholdings. Over the last few decades, the architecture of these farmsteads has been studied from an archaeological point of view, resulting in detailed typo-chronological series on the evolution of aspects like constructive materials and techniques or the functional division of the domestic and productive spaces. In this paper, we propose widening this analytical framework by adopting a landscape-based approach that considers not only the architecture of domestic units, but also the material traces of past social practices in the surrounding agricultural areas (e.g., the creation of specific productive spaces or the imprints of specific management practices, like manuring or liming). To this scope, we propose an intensive local study based on the village of Zizurkil (Gipuzkoa, Basque Country). We have applied a transdisciplinary methodology based on the combined analysis of documentary and oral sources, architectural features present in the local landscape, and geoarchaeological core sampling. Sampled soil records have been analysed using different physical and chemical proxies (XRD, XRF, and LOI, along with radiocarbon dating) to define a high-resolution stratigraphic characterisation. Our results show three main phases in the evolution of the local rural landscape: 1) a moment of (re)configuration that originated the backbone of the ‘traditional’ landscape between the 14th and 16th centuries; 2) a significant intensification linked to the introduction of American crops, such as maize, between the 17th-19th centuries; and 3) a rapid degradation since the mid-20th century

Introduction: while some of scholars believe that combining adult and adolescent suicidal behavior findings can result in misleading conclusions, some of researchers have stated that suicidal behavior may be a different phenomenon in adolescents than in adults. Hence, in the present study, the clinical profile of suicidal behavior among adult and child & adolescent psychiatric inpatients, has been compared with each other, to assess their resemblances or variances, in a non-western, local patient population. Methods: five acute academic wards, which have been specified for admission of first episode adult psychiatric patients, and five acute non-academic wards, which have been specified for admission of recurrent episode adult psychiatric patients, had been selected for current study. In addition, child & adolescent section of Razi psychiatric hospital was the field of appraisal concerning its specific age-group. All inpatients with suicidal behavior (successful suicide and attempted suicide, in total), during the last five years (2013-2018), had been included in the present investigation. Besides, clinical diagnosis was based on Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition. Intra-group and between-group analyses had been performed by ‘comparison of proportions’. Statistical significance as well, had been defined as p value ≤0.05. Results: As said by results, during a sixty months period, sixty-three suicidal behaviors among adult patients, including one successful suicide and sixty-two suicide attempts, and fourteen suicide attempts among child & adolescent patients, without any successful one, had been recorded by the security board of the hospital. While among adults and child & adolescent patients no significant gender-based difference was evident, with respect to suicidal conduct, among adults, the most frequent mental illness was bipolar I disorder, which was significantly more prevalent in comparison with other mental disorders. The other disorders included schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, personality disorders (borderline & antisocial), substance abuse disorders, and adjustment disorder. Among child & adolescent subjects, the most frequent mental illness was, once more, bipolar I disorder, followed by conduct disorder, and substance abuse disorder. Moreover, no significant difference was evident between the first admission and recurrent admission cases in adults or child & adolescents. While self-mutilation, self poisoning and hanging were the preferred methods of suicide among both groups, self-mutilation was significantly more prevalent than the other ways. Conclusion: While the annual incidence of suicidal behavior in inpatient adults and child & adolescents was comparable, bipolar disorder was the most frequent serious mental illness among suicidal subjects of both groups. Moreover, self-mutilation was the preferred method of suicide in adult and child & adolescent psychiatric inpatients.

This article describes a local study that seeks to illuminate first-year college students’ prior experiences with research and information literacy (IL) during high school. A small, suburban university surveyed and conducted interviews with librarians at the university’s feeder schools. The high school librarians rated students’ levels of proficiency in IL skills and described their school’s IL programs. Overall, librarians rated students’ IL levels as less than proficient and described several challenges to helping students improve these competencies, including teacher resistance, assignment design, and students’ habits around information. Opportunities exist for academic and school librarians to collaborate to improve IL instruction as well as to emphasize IL in teacher education programs.

Urban green spaces offer vital ecosystem services such as regulating elevated temperatures in cities. Less information exists, however, on how urban green spaces influence outdoor thermal comfort (OTC), which is dependent on people's perceptions of the complex interactions amongst ambient humidity, wind and both air and radiant temperatures. In this study, we analysed an existing OTC dataset compiled within a large Singapore urban park and calibrated OTC thresholds for physiological equivalent temperatures (PET) by analysing PET against thermal perception survey responses from the park visitors (n = 1508). We examined OTC according to (i) neutral, (ii) acceptable and (iii) preferred temperatures, where respondents felt 'comfortable' outdoors in the park. We estimated that neutral temperature, when all respondents experience neither heat nor cold stress, is 26.2 °C; acceptable temperatures, when only slight heat or cold stress is experienced, range between 21.6 and 31.6 °C; and preferred ('ideal') temperature for all respondents is 24.2 °C. Respondents residing for more than 6 months in Singapore achieved thermal neutrality, suggesting that a greater degree of thermal adaptation likely developed during acclimatisation to local climate through a combination of physiological, behavioural and psychological circumstances. Comparisons with other OTC studies showed differences in synoptic climates are linked to variations in the magnitude and ranges of perceived PET. Lastly, respondents in this study perceived lower neutral and preferred temperatures compared to respondents surveyed over a variety of urban land use categories in another local study. The differences in neutral and preferred temperatures between studies suggest that lower park temperatures and different environmental attitudes influence perceived OTC.

How do the research practices and challenges of agriculture scholars at the University of Idaho (U of I) contrast with those of their peers at other land grant universities? To answer that question, this paper compares qualitative data from U of I researchers to findings from a nationwide study of agricultural research practices. Because the U of I did not participate in the nationwide study, this local study provides a framework for identifying issues that are unique to researchers within our local context. Furthermore, the paper demonstrates how a similar methodology can be used by library liaisons to better understand the challenges of researchers in any discipline and help determine which new and existing research support services best meet their needs.

Background:Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by benign tumor growth in multiple organs, which may cause significant negative impact on patients’ health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Since HRQoL studies in Asian TSC population are scarce, we aim to evaluate the HRQoL of our local TSC patients, who are mainly ethical Chinese, so as to provide a holistic view and information for better understanding of TSC patients in this part of the world. Methods:HUI-Ch is a validated Chinese multiple-choice questionnaire for scoring Health Utilities Index Mark 2 (HUI2) and Health Utilities Index Mark 3 (HUI3). It was used to assess HRQoL of TSC individuals in Hong Kong. Proxy-data on socio-demographics and common chronic health conditions for TSC patients were collected. Data analyses involved multiple imputation with two-sample t-test, Pearson correlation and multiple regression to predict variations in HRQoL in relation to different factors. Data was compared with existing data on HUI of other disease entities. Results:Of 27 patients in the study sample, mean HUI2 and HUI3 scores were 0.64 and 0.50 respectively (1 = perfect health, 0 = death). 81.5% and 77.8% of TSC patients belonged to the “severe” disability category on HUI2 and HUI3, which were higher than the proportion of Down syndrome patients (60.0% and 72.0%). The cliff coastline of the central region of Asturias (N Spain) is severely affected by terrain instabilities, causing considerable damage to properties and infrastructures every year. In this study, we applied the A-DInSAR technique based on Sentinel-1 imagery to map and monitor active slopes in an emblematic rocky area of the Asturian coast: the Peñas Cape. The A-DInSAR dataset analysis has been focused at regional and local scales. For the local scale assessment, six areas were selected based on previous work and the landslide database of the Principality of Asturias region (BAPA-Base de datos de Argayos del Principado de Asturias), created by the University of Oviedo. The processing of the data has been performed using two independent sets of processing tools: the PSIG software tools, a professional tool and, the GEP service, an unsupervised platform. The dataset consisted of 113 SAR IW-SLC images acquired by the Sentinel-1 A/B satellites between January 2018 and February 2020. LOS mean deformation velocity maps (mm year−1) and deformation time series (mm) were obtained by PSIG and GEP software, allowing coastal areas with landslide incidence and other terrain movements to be distinguished. Deformation motion has been estimated from PSIG VLOS rates to be from −17.1 to 37.4 mm year−1 and GEP VLOS rates from −23.0–38.3 mm year−1. According to deformation time series (mm), the minimum and maximum accumulated displacements are −68.5–78.8 and −48.8–77.0 mm by means of PSIG and GEP, respectively. These ground motions could be associated with coastal instabilities related to marine activity and coastal retreat, both at regional and local study scales. The main contributions of this work are: (1) the demonstration of the potential of A-DInSAR techniques to evaluate coastal instabilities in a coastal retreat context and (2) the comparison of the results provided by the two sets of tools, which allowed the ground motion to be assessed by using an unsupervised approach vs. a contrasted one (robust software). This study increases the knowledge about coastal instabilities and other ground movements along the rocky coast and cliffs of Central Asturias. As a conclusion for the future, we believe that this work highlights the evaluated methods as significant tools to support the management of coastal territories with jagged and rocky coastlines, This research was funded by COSINES Project Ref. Sloshing is an important topic for the integrity of LNG tanks and the overall stability of the vessel. In the past, the interaction between the free surface and its substructure have been studied, especially where high-speed fluid jets impinge on the interior surface of the tank, and sometimes cause damage. In this paper, a boundary element method (BEM) with a fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme is used to study the local phenomenon of nonlinear free-surface motion in a two-dimensional tank subject to roll motions. As the external excitations are nearly resonant with the fluid inside the tank, large free-surface deformations usually take place. The dynamic responses including the fluid velocity and pressure will grow drastically as the fluid is slamming on the walls. If no adequate conditions are applied, it is difficult to capture the peak physical quantities associated with strong nonlinear waves by most conventional Eulerian-Lagrangian methods. The numerical error will be accumulated and enlarged in just a few computational steps, which will eventually lead to unstable solutions. This paper will study the local phenomenon of a fast-moving jet forming on the wall of the tank, and its effect on the numerical stability and accuracy of the method overall. Some special numerical treatments are carried out for the local phenomenon approximation. The conservation of fluid mass is employed to obtain a reasonable geometry of the jet and its velocity along the wall. This provides a new set of rational boundary conditions applied on the walls, rather than using the artificial damping effect of other researchers. Results from the present method are compared with those from the volume of fluid (VOF) method implemented in ANSYS Fluent. The local free-surface shape in the vicinity of the jet and some local and global flow field patterns, including velocity and pressure, will be compared with and verified with experimental observations and measurements.

Background Fragility hip fractures are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the UK. The 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic led to restrictions on trauma services in several hospitals with potential operating delays and unintended negative outcomes. This local study describes the impact of operative pathway changes on clinical outcomes of patients undergoing fragility hip fracture surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods A single centre, retrospective analysis was performed for all patients who presented with fragility hip fractures for operative management between the 23rd March and 29th April 2020. Results Thirty four patients met the inclusion criteria for analysis. The median patient age was 88 years old, with a median inpatient stay of 8 days. Three patients died prior to being operated on. Forty eight percent of patients were operated on within the national 36 hour target. The 30 day all-cause mortality from the date of presentation of injury was 20%. Discussion Our study demonstrates that the pandemic and changes to operating pathways has had a sizeable impact on the hip fracture service with delays in surgery and an increase in the 30 day mortality. These disruptions to surgical operating systems are likely to continue, with potential ongoing unintended negative consequences as demonstrated in this study. We believe that a focus on solving logistical issues including availability of sufficient operating theatre capacity, redeployment of staff, early multidisciplinary input and counselling patients on the increased outcome risks will help to mitigate risks posed to this vulnerable patient population during these periods.

Improving the provision of postnatal contraception (PNC) has been a topic of great attention recently, especially since the publication of the FSRH guideline Contraception After Pregnancy .1 Many Trusts across the UK are currently working hard to implement changes to improve uptake of effective PNC, including our service in Leeds. We would like to inform Journal readers about our pilot study that we ran in 2019. Leeds has two maternity hospitals: Leeds General Infirmary and Saint James’ University Hospital. Prior to this pilot study, no contraception was offered routinely before or at the time of postnatal discharge. A previous local study among postnatal women showed a theoretical demand for contraception provision prior to discharge.2 To address this, and to raise awareness among staff, Leeds …

Let Γ be a finite or infinite interval of \(\mathbb R\), p ∈ (1, ∞), and let w ∈ Ap( Γ) be a Muckenhoupt weight. Relations of the weighted singular integral operator \(wS_{\mathbb{R}_+}w^{-1}I\) on the space \(L^p(\mathbb{R}_{+})\) and Mellin pseudo-differential operators with non-regular symbols are studied. A localization of a class of Muckenhoupt weights to power weights at finite endpoints of Γ, which is related to the Allan-Douglas local principle, is obtained by using quasicontinuous functions and Mellin pseudo-differential operators with non-regular symbols.

Introduction. The structure of incidence of sexually transmitted infections is changing constantly. Information on such changes supports correct planning of clinical and diagnostic activities of institutions providing specialized medical care by qualified specialists. Objective:to investigate the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections with pathogens clinically significant to the genitourinary system in Ukraine and at the local level.Materials and methods. Polymerase chain reaction was used to test the biological material obtained from the genitourinary clinical specimens from subjects with sexually transmitted infections, who underwent clinical and laboratory examinations in Oleksandrivsk Clinical Hospital (Kyiv, Ukraine) for Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma hominis, Mycoplasma genitalium, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Trichomonas vaginalis, Human papillomavirus, and Neisseria gonorrhoea. During 2017, 607 subjects of both genders, including 295 (48.6%) females and 312 (51.4%) males, were examined. Their mean age was 32±3.5.Findings. Chlamydia trachomatis was found in 159 (26.2%) of 607 examined subjects – 85 males and 74 females. Mycoplasma hominis was found in 122 of 585 (21.1%) examined subjects – 64 males and 58 females. Mycoplasma genitalium, respectively, in 17 (6.62%) of 258 subjects – 6 males and 11 females. Ureaplasma urealyticum was found in the largest number of subjects (305, i.e. in 48.77% of 601 examined subjects) – 157 males and 148 females. Trichomonas vaginalis was found in 28 (5.23%) of 535 subjects – 15 males and 13 females. Human papillomavirus was found in 158 of 297 (53.2%) examined subjects – 88 males and 70 females. Neisseria gonorrhea was found in 33 of 297 (8.45%) subjects – 8 males and 25 females.Conclusions. As suggested by the local study of the sexually transmitted infections incidence in Ukraine, the most clinically significant for the genitourinary system are Human papillomavirus (53.2%), Ureaplasma urealyticum (48.77%), Chlamydia trachomatis (26.2%) and Mycoplasma hominis (21.1%). Therefore, tests for these pathogens in the specified region is currently the most appropriate during diagnostic examinations and counselling of subjects with genitourinary infections.

Introduction: This case study examines students’ and instructors’ experiences with usability testing in technical communication service courses. Research questions: 1. What prior experience do students and instructors have with usability testing? 2. What are their challenges with implementing usability testing in technical communication courses? 3. What are their recommendations for improving their efforts? About the case: This study was conducted in 2012 at a small Midwestern university where students and instructors in four sections of technical communication service courses participated in the study. Situating the case: Most technical communication scholarship focuses on usability practices, methods, or tools, and rarely explicitly addresses its pedagogy, especially the practical challenges faced by our students and instructors . Methods/approach: Data were gathered through preliminary and post-project student surveys and instructor interviews. Thematic coding was used to analyze the data . Results/discussion: Students faced the usual practical challenges such as time and resource constraints and collaboration with users. They found strategies such as using in-class activities, readings, and examples, and working directly with users to be helpful in their usability efforts. Instructors expressed the need for better preparation. Conclusions: Instructors should not only be required to take a usability course that will prepare them to be more effective usability instructors, but they should also incorporate readings and examples that will help students collaborate effectively with users and clients. The study is limited to research participants at one institution. Future research should involve larger, ethnographic studies of diverse students and instructors to address more aspects of usability pedagogy.

Many earthquake empirical models were developed based on the statistics in the past. However, it is commonly seen that a non-local model was applied to a local study without any adjustment. In this paper, a new algorithm using maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) to adjust a non-local model for local applications was presented, including a case study assessing the probability of major earthquake occurrences in Taipei. Specifically, considering the fault length of 36 km and slip rate of 2 mm/yr, it suggests the Sanchiao (or Shanchiao) fault could induce a major earthquake with magnitude M w 7.14±0.17, based on a non-local model integrated with limited local data using the MLE algorithms.

A measurement system based on subminiature eddy-current transducers is developed for local study of defects in aluminum-magnesium alloy plates. A modified Delianna filter is made which can greatly enhance the signal-to-noise ratio. A dependence of the response of the eddy-current transducer on flaws in the form of hidden slits and apertures inside the slabs is derived for excitation coil frequencies of 300–700 Hz.

The University of Florida (UF) George A. Smathers Libraries is one of 19 institutions that participated in an Ithaka S+R Research Support Services investigation of agricultural sciences. The authors conducted a qualitative analysis of research support services based on one-on-one semistructured interviews with 15 faculty of the UF Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences in 2016. A number of core themes emerged from the analysis of research practices in the local study at UF. Core themes included finding appropriate literature, data management issues and tools, repositories for sharing research products, and research dissemination. This report summarizes a subset of these results, focusing on themes related to academic library services that support agricultural scholars research needs.
