2. Study on gas–liquid flow characteristics in stirred tank with dual-impeller based on CFD-PBM coupled model

Abstract

Study on gas–liquid flow in stirred tank with two combinations of dual-impeller (six-bent-bladed turbine (6BT)+six-inclined-blade down-pumping turbine (6ITD), the six-bent-bladed turbine (6BT)+six-inclined-blade up-pumping turbine (6ITU)) was conducted using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and population balance model (PBM) (CFD-PBM) coupled model. The local bubble size was captured by particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurement. The gas holdup, bubble size distribution and gas–liquid interfacial area were explored at different conditions through numerical simulation. The results showed that the 4 mm bubbles accounted for the largest proportion of 33% at the gas flow rates Q = 0.76 m3⋅h−1 and 22% at Q = 1.52 m3⋅h−1 for combined impeller of 6BT + 6ITU, while the bubbles of 4.7 mm and 5.5 mm were the largest proportion for 6BT + 6ITD combination, i.e. 25% at Q = 0.76 m3⋅h−1 and 22% at Q = 1.52 m3⋅h−1, respectively, which indicated that 6BT + 6ITU could reduce bubble size effectively and promote gas dispersion. In addition, the gas holdup around impellers was increased obviously with the speed compared with gas flow rate. So it was concluded that 6ITU impeller could be more conductive to the bubble dispersion with more uniform bubble size, which embodied the advantages of 6BT + 6ITU combination in gas–liquid mixing.

Abstract

The effects of internals and gas distributors on the local dynamics of the bubbles in the conventional gas–solid fluidized bed were studied. Mesh-type internals with different opening areas (50%, 70% and 90%) and different arrangements (two-layer and four-layer); and a sintered plate with a smaller pore size (1 μm) and a perforated plate with a larger pore size as distributors were investigated. Differential pressure drops and local solids holdups were measured under various superficial gas velocities to compare the performances of the different types of internals and distributors. The instantaneous solids holdup signals from the optical fibre probe were used to further examine the local bubble dynamics in detail. Smaller bubbles were found, with the installation of internals or using the sintered plate, resulting in lower pressure drops and a higher bed expansion. Internals with reduced opening area or distributor with smaller pore size further leads to a higher changeover rate between the bubbles and dense phase, both axially and radially, and hence a better gas–solid contacting and an earlier transition to the turbulent flow regime of the bed.

Abstract

The ARCADE 2 balloon bolometer along with a number of other instruments have detected what appears to be a radio synchrotron background at frequencies below about 3 GHz. Neither extragalactic radio sources nor diffuse Galactic emission can currently account for this finding. We use the locally measured Cosmic ray electron population, demodulated for effects of the Solar wind, and other observational constraints combined with a turbulent magnetic field model to predict the radio synchrotron emission for the Local Bubble. We find that the spectral index of the modelled radio emission is roughly consistent with the radio background. Our model can approximately reproduce the observed antenna temperatures for a mean magnetic field strength B between 3-5 nT. We argue that this would not violate observational constraints from pulsar measurements. However, the curvature in the predicted spectrum would mean that other, so far unknown sources would have to contribute below 100 MHz. Also, the magnetic energy density would then dominate over thermal and cosmic ray electron energy density, likely causing an inverse magnetic cascade with large variations of the radio emission in different sky directions as well as high polarisation. We argue that this disagrees with several observations and thus that the magnetic field is probably much lower, quite possibly limited by equipartition with the energy density in relativistic or thermal particles (B = 0.2-0.6 nT). In the latter case, we predict a contribution of the Local Bubble to the unexplained radio background at most at the per cent level., 8 pages, 2 figures, accepted by MNRAS

Abstract

Faraday tomography of a field centred on the extragalactic point source 3C 196 with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) revealed an intertwined structure of diffuse polarised emission with straight depolarisation canals and tracers of the magnetized and multi-phase interstellar medium (ISM), such as dust and line emission from atomic hydrogen (HI). This study aims at extending the multi-tracer analysis of LOFAR data to three additional fields in the surroundings of the 3C 196 field. For the first time, we study the three-dimensional structure of the LOFAR emission by determining the distance to the depolarisation canals. We use the Rolling Hough Transform to compare the orientation of the depolarisation canals with that of the filamentary structure seen in HI and, based on starlight and dust polarisation data, with that of the plane-of-the-sky magnetic field. Stellar parallaxes from $Gaia$ complement the starlight polarisation with the corresponding distances. Faraday tomography of the three fields shows a rich network of diffuse polarised emission at Faraday depths between $-10~{\rm rad~m^{-2}}$ and $+15~{\rm rad~m^{-2}}$. A complex system of straight depolarisation canals resembles that of the 3C 196 field. The depolarisation canals align both with the HI filaments and with the magnetic field probed by dust. The observed alignment suggests that an ordered magnetic field organises the multiphase ISM over a large area ($\sim$20$^{\circ}$). In one field, two groups of stars at distances below and above 200 pc, respectively, show distinct magnetic-field orientations. These are both comparable with the orientations of the depolarisation canals in the same field. We conclude that the depolarisation canals likely trace the same change of the magnetic field as probed by the stars, which corresponds to the edge of the Local Bubble., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

Since the current commonly used bubble detection method cannot meet the requirements of real-time bubble detection in terms of the detection target and volume, this paper proposes a method of real-time detection of coal-bed methane (CBM) bubble parameters in a borehole with a double-sensor conductivity probe and designs the corresponding test device. The ellipsoid correction algorithm was adopted for the calculation of the bubble volume to reduce the error. Simulation test results indicated that the proposed device can quickly and reliably measure local bubble parameters, including void fraction, bubble velocity, and bubble volume. This technique can be applied to monitor the fluid parameters of different strata of main coal in CBM well simultaneously and provide a basis for the comparison of reservoir properties of different main coal seams and the effect of CBM well exploitation.

Abstract

The electrostatic charge in a fluidized bed can be applied to provide local information on the bed hydrodynamics. Electrostatic probes can withstand adverse conditions that would be an issue for other measurement probes, such as high temperatures (limited by metal), high velocities (e.g. 2 m/s), high bed densities (1500 kg/m3), and large-scale equipment. The objective of this study was to investigate various applications of electrostatic probes in fluidized beds. Results obtained with an array of 45 probes arranged in 5 rows provided the local bubble gas flux and bubble velocity. They could also be used to detect any slugging. When liquid was sprayed into the gas-fluidized bed, the electrostatic probes could provide the penetration of the gas-liquid spray jet, detect bogging and measure the free moisture, i.e. the amount of liquid that was not trapped within wet agglomerates. The electrostatic probes measurements were validated with alternate measurement methods.

Abstract

The paper presents a study of the slip velocity for almost spherical bubbles in a downward laminar tube flow. The local slip velocity is defined as a difference between the mean liquid velocity (measured with electrodiffusional method) and the mean bubble velocity (measured with a modified LDA tool with a small size of measurement volume). The law for slip velocity for downward flow is significantly different from a similar law for upward flow. This reveals that the bubble flow motion is rather random than structured in the upward flow.
